An interesting little book about famous gems written during Queen Victoria's reign. The publication date adds to the book's charm. I find it interesting to see how views change over time. This book presents the French Blue, a large blue diamond once owned by French kings and now the property of the Hope family. Cartier had not gotten his hand on it yet so there's no curse involved.
I found this whilst window shopping on Gutenberg. I really enjoyed the stories and the deep background of these gems. That these pocket sized things were kept track of through the centuries really surprised me, and the events surrounding their change of hands added lots of drama.
Wrapped up in these pages are sparkling little historical tidbits of famous gems and the intrigue, skullduggery, misery, and joy they brought to their owners and nations.
💥 Recommended for the interesting, although it is flatly written, history. 🟣
