How to write a book for middle school boys - Lesson #1: Put the word 'Fart' in the title. Lesson #2: Include lots of fart puns through the book. Joan Holub's book Fartboy and Reeky Dog completes both lessons.

Fart Boy and his classmates are on a special field trip to the museum, but someone gave our intrepid protagonist peanuts and garbanzo beans for dinner - an explosive combination! The resulting massive and stinky farts bring the dinosaur exhibits to life! Fart Boy and his friends have to find a way to stop the rampaging dinosaur bones - as well as the evil Dr. Gravypants - who is also in the museum with some evil plans.

I've read a few different 'fart' books for middle schoolers and I was honestly a little underwhelmed with this. The fart humor was like a high-pitched squeaky fart - a little bit forced.

Like a lot of books for school-aged readers, this is more than just fart and scat humor - readers might actually learn a little something while snickering at all the farts. But this, too, felt forced. You can't have a book with just farts in it for middle school entertainment - you have to be educational too.

Fortunately, there are still plenty of farts. Stinky, puffy, green globs of farts on every page. This is a graphic novel so we need to see those stink-bomb farts. The art ("smellustrated" ... that gives you an idea of the humor here) is by Rafael Rosado. It's fine. It's what you might expect in this kind of book.

Have you gotten tired of all the times I've written the word "fart"? That's really what you're in for if you pick up this book.

On the one hand - I wouldn't recommend this at all. On the other hand - anything that gets someone to read is worthwhile and I suspect that this may be the only book that some readers will smell ... er, read ... and that's okay. It's just not my cup of tea.

Looking for a good toot? Er, book? Fart Boy and Reeky Dog: Dino Doom by Joan Holub might appeal to middle school boys who fart and snicker in the hallways, but not likely to anyone else.

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

There is something wonderfully refreshing about a children's book that knows exactly what it wants to be. Fart Boy and Reeky Dog: Dino Doom! wants kids to laugh. A lot.

Joan Holub takes superheroes, dinosaur obsession, time travel, alien gadgets, museum adventures, and an almost unbelievable number of fart jokes and somehow turns the whole thing into a genuinely charming story.

Phartolomew Normal—Fart Boy—is already a wonderfully absurd hero. In this adventure, a school trip to the Stinksonian Museum spirals into chaos when dinosaurs become part of the action and Professor Gravypants returns with another ridiculous plan.

What surprised me was how much real science is woven into the story. Readers encounter fossils, paleontology, dinosaur facts, and even the asteroid extinction event. The educational material never feels pasted on; curiosity is simply part of who these characters are.

I also loved the quieter character development involving Liz. Phartolomew discovers that someone he has barely noticed has actually been trying to connect with him for years. Her revelation that she has said hello to him 247 times is funny, but it also lands emotionally.

That moment gives this extremely silly book a little extra depth. And that is really the magic of Dino Doom!. It never stops being ridiculous. It just turns out that ridiculous and meaningful aren't mutually exclusive. The fart jokes may get kids reading. The friendship, adventure, science, and terrific visual storytelling may keep them reading.

Five very stinky stars.

Thank you to Random House Children's Books for the ARC through NetGalley.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, so wanted to read this one - particularly because there are dinosaurs! As part of our library programming, we're introducing our outreach groups at elementary schools to the first book in March, so we're excited to tell them there's a second book!

We meet Fart Boy and sidekick Carl on their way to an overnight field trip at the museum. Fart Boy's powers are activated and chaos and mayhem (and some learning) occur while they take on Gravypants. This is a fun, laugh out loud story that kids are sure to enjoy because there are fart jokes and puns (and much more fun). My 12 year old sense of humor loved it!

I read this with my 9-year old son, and he said this book was 5 stars.

The humor is obviously for kids who think fart jokes are funny. I liked the artwork. I would have preferred reading the previous book first, but my son didn't seem to mind at all. There is enough information that it's not needed to understand events, but I think theses would be more enjoyable to read in order.

As a parent, I also appreciated how space and dinosaur facts were snuck into such a silly read. When the kids travel back in time, the Earth talks about the formation of the planet and later the dinosaurs going extinct. Other dinosaur facts were throughout the story.

Thank you NetGalley for an ebook!

Our two "heroes" are back along with Fart Boy's friend, Carl. Their class is heading toward the museum for an overnight field trip. Disaster strikes as Fart Boy cannot keep from farting and museum exhibits come to life. By using their skills along with gadgets left by Gravypants, they manage to thwart both the living dinosaurs and the evil doctor to keep everyone safe. In fact, no one else even know what happened. Humorous and fun return to these characters.

Such a super cute book! We hadn't read the original story, so we went back and got that one as well. My kids are 7 and 10, and they thought this was hilarious. And actual dinosaur facts were a nice addition - it's not just straight humor.
