Mistakenly Saving the Villain #3

Mistakenly Saving the Villain (Novel) Vol. 3

Rate this book
SOME MISTAKES ARE DESTINY

After a dramatic confrontation with An Long, Song Qingshi and Yue Wuhuan finally begin to speak openly about their feelings. Their relationship deepens—an oasis of tenderness in a world that has offered them little peace.

But shadows remain. Even with treatment, Yue Wuhuan’s illness still festers, and Song Qingshi faces his own sickness: the slow collapse of his cultivation. Worse yet, the system—the mysterious voice that first bound him to this story—is far from satisfied with his failure to save the “right” person.

As the truth behind Song Qingshi’s biggest mistake unravels, so does reality itself. Perhaps he and Yue Wuhuan are nothing more than puppets of fate, destined to be twisted and broken by the heavens. Is anything in the world strong enough to break that cycle?

well. i went from thinking misvil would be a new favorite of mine only for it to go downhill so fast.

loved the first 25% of this danmei but the time jumps and pacing and plot was something i really disliked, to the point that it overshadowed how i enjoyed the characters. misvil is not a bad novel & i see why it’s so beloved but it did not hit the mark for me 😭

the characters (specifically song qingshi) felt very ooc at times? like he was written so inconsistently while yue wuhuan was written with so much care that it has me scratching my head. i felt as the novel went on i struggled with i lost interest.

misvil definitely cemented that i perhaps need to…stay away from historical/xianxia/etc danmei for awhile because i really don’t care for them 💀 so maybe one of the reasons i just didn’t care for this danmei is because it’s my least favorite genre. time and time again i pick up historical danmei but i can name on one single hand the ones i legitimately enjoyed

i read the fan tl so that could be a another factor as to why i didn’t care for this since the translation i read felt like it was mtl rather than human translated. either way to sum up my feelings:

description

(do give misvil a try once it’s officially published!!!!! i’m more inclined to believe that it’s not a bad danmei at all it just didn’t work for me. the first 25% is a 5/5 while the rest was more of a 2.5/5 for me)

“Perhaps… no matter how many times I lose my memories, no matter what you look like, I’ll fall for you the moment I see you.”

Whew! I have a lot of thoughts but I’m so tired and sleepy so I draw a blank when typing. The first thing I noticed was how beautiful the physical book is. The cover is absolutely gorgeous and might be my favorite in the series so far. I was also surprised by the paper quality because it feels noticeably thicker than previous Seven Seas releases. I remember a lot of readers talking about how the paper had gotten thinner over the years, so this immediately stood out to me. I really hope this is something they’ll continue with because it made the book feel much nicer to hold. I can’t say the same for all the interior illustrations, though. Some didn’t leave much of an impression on me, especially after seeing such a stunning cover. But I think there’s an improvement compared to volumes 1 & 2.

My biggest struggle was following the story. Somewhere around the middle, I realized I had no idea what was going on anymore. I tried to push through because I thought everything would eventually make sense, but I never really found my footing again. Then the story suddenly jumped forward with a time skip, and I was still trying to process everything that came before it. I spent more time feeling confused than I wanted to, which was honestly a bit frustrating. Even so, I still loved how the main characters’ relationship was handled. I really appreciate that the story doesn’t treat love like a magic fix for everything they’ve been through. They both care so deeply about each other and want nothing more than to protect each other, yet neither of them knows how to let himself be saved. Watching them keep repeating that pattern was heartbreaking, even if it also became a little annoying after a while. Their relationship was the one thing that kept pulling me back whenever I felt lost.

The ending also left me unsatisfied. It stopped at a point that didn’t feel complete, and I closed the book wondering why it ended there. I honestly think it should have wrapped up a little earlier and saved the rest for the next volume, or committed to a few more chapters so the ending could actually breathe. It felt like it landed in the middle of something, and I was left hanging in a way that wasn’t really exciting. I still want to keep reading because I’m emotionally invested in these characters and I want to see where their story goes. I just wish I hadn’t spent so much of this volume trying to figure out what was happening. There were moments I genuinely loved, especially the emotional ones, but they were buried under a plot that completely lost me. I ended this volume attached, confused, and frustrated, which is probably the best way I can sum up my experience with this book.

4.4/5 🌟

This review is going to be different from my usual ones: the ones filled with many quotes and a place where I somewhat make a tidy rambling list of the things I love and what cons I found.

I am feeling incredibly conflicted because there is so much to digest; reading this volume was so dense and heavy that it literally feels like I went through a whirlwind.
( ꩜ ᯅ ꩜;)

The story starts off slow—enough that it actually drags in places. To be honest, I don't feel like the beginning contributed much to the plot; it felt more like filler. But then, we finally reach the center of the story, and everything starts to shift in such a beautiful direction. These chapters were filled with communication, sincerity, and so much consent that my heart felt full and satisfied.
(´▽`ʃƪ)♡

I knew there was an underlying sense of doom waiting to happen, but when it finally hit, it was utter chaos. \(”˚☐˚)/

The plot then takes a massive turn that flips the entire world-building and every previous character interaction upside down. I’m still struggling to get used to this new direction and, if I’m being honest, I’m a little disappointed. The foundation of communication and sincerity that was built so carefully is now lost. We are hit with a 3,000-year time skip, and everyone we knew before is gone. .·°՞(っ-ᯅ-ς)՞°·.

Then there is Wuhuan, who has become the villain-like god of this world. I am still trying to figure out if he is a completely different person. At times, I feel he is still the same lonely, scared individual who sees himself as "filthy" and is terrified of losing everything good in his life. He has gone mad from the suffering he’s endured all these years, and now that he has sought his reward for waiting, his foundation is built on muddy waters and a bed of lies. He continues to dig himself into an even bigger hole; it is frustrating and heartbreaking to watch because I know he is hurting. 。°(°¯᷄◠¯᷅°)°。

To make matters worse, our main character, Qingshi, now has amnesia. His cultivation has gone to shit, he no longer has a Nascent Soul, and we are stuck in a loop of wandering the Immortal Realm all over again. There doesn't seem to be a solid goal right now; everything feels messy and I don’t know how to feel about it. While I love our main couple, I’m saddened by the dismissal of the old characters and rather annoyed by the new ones being introduced. ૮₍ ˃ ⤙ ˂ ₎ა
(cough cough, Jincheng)

I still have to let these feelings brew. I am deeply invested in the story, but I am beyond frustrated at the same time. I just want them to be happy! I want them to fucking communicate again, for fuck's sake! That is the only reward I am seeking right now. If I can get that back, along with a solid explanation as to who the real villain is and why the System has been behaving this way, I’ll be inexplicably happy. (ง ͠ಥ_ಥ)ง
(Please, author-nim!)

My guess is the real villain has something to do with the way these demons are being replicated over and over. The craziest thing about it all is that Wuhuan wields complete and utter power in this Immortal Realm, and yet he still cannot have what he wants most. Much like those demons, his insatiable thirst and yearning for his beloved seem just out of reach because of his 'rational' irrational decisions—causing a recursive reaction of chaos, like the heads of a Lernaean Hydra. Control is literally slipping through his fingers like water through cracks.

All of this makes me think that, just like Qingshi is playing and manipulating the System that brought him into this world, Wuhuan, too is a player to some greater power that he himself—and the reader—doesn't even know.
I’ll have to come back here after I finish the story to properly put my final thoughts into words. ദ്ദി ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ )

There is so much that I love about this story, but I definitely feel that I need to finish the rest in order to put my full thoughts together. I cried so hard with about 55-65% of the way into this volume... My heart hurts! This was insane! They didn't deserve to go through so much torment for love! .·°՞(¯□¯)՞°·.

Out of 10:

Fluff level: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Angst level: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Frustrating level: 1 million!% ⭐
Humor: ⭐⭐⭐

No quotes! I'm so tired!!

So, I mostly enjoy this series—but I’m not a big fan necessarily of where this third volume goes? It feels a bit rushed.

We have a lot of big things that go down in this volume in quick succession: another transmigration where the system tries to course correct the narrative, a sizable time-skip, and one of our main characters goes full villain mode. I think it’s a lot and the story is clearly trying to cover a lot of ground and set the final stage for the last(?) volume.

But, I wish we got more time to see the relationship between Song Qingshi and Yue Wuhuan blossom. They’re in an explicit romantic relationship for five minutes before it’s all torn asunder. It’s shocking. A bit disjointed.

And, what’s going on with A Long??? Is he dead??? Full demon??? Snap your fingers and that climactic conflict is tossed aside. If the snake didn’t show back up later, I’d have thought An Long and his presence in this story was completely gutted. Very odd. So many choices and we went with this.

Anyway.

Disappointment aside, I still like this series—and want to finish it. This third installment is just arresting in a lot of unexpected ways. The “villain” part of this story just comes barreling in like the kool-aid man. So, be warned~

ok i’m really torn between giving this a 4 or 5 star for MANY reasons. ok the first half was so silly and romantic and im glad they confessed and were heading in the direction of happiness. HOWEVER. that got slammed shut the second the author decided to pull some bs and throw in an amnesia arc. WTF. genuinely one of my least favorite tropes EVER. so that pissed me off. at the very least i’ll acknowledge that it did add some funny moments (snake baby, cross dressing, etc) but it’s just really pmo. ugh maybe i’ll give it a 4/5 then…

edit: ok also another thing I want to add is that YW is kind of starting to remind me of HC from heaven officials because yes i know YW has more of a bird thing going on for him, but there’s also lots of times where he’s depicted with butterflies… and I know that’s HC’s kind of thing. i also wanna add that HC was known for his lifelong yearning of i think 800 years and in this book YW is kind of doing the same but i think it’s 3000 years. yeah it’s kind of just interesting… not necessarily a bad thing because I really did like HC but idk i feel like the book is definitely going in a direction wasn’t entirely anticipating. BUT. i did just preorder the new one… so see you in october ig LOL

Trigger warning: child abuse (teen?), topics related to suicide, mental health crises.

There are a couple kiss scenes on screen but any of the love makings are off screen. So this is not explicit, more tasteful than anything.

Okay moving on, I have to address the elephant in the room. This is the entire reason that it lost a star despite being a good read. For some reason that I cannot understand there is a part halfway through the book where the story seems to come to a hard stop and restart. It really feels like it should have been a part one or part two or even different volumes. It's very jarring, and even spans a time shift of about 3,000 years and a complete setting rewrite. This left me confused and baffled when I was at the 54% complete mark. I don't mind where the stories going now but it really feels like a reset. It's interesting, but it is very hard on the traction of the story.

Okay now that the elephant is dealt with I'm going to move on to the first part of the story. Part 1 picks up right where the last book finished and if you don't remember what happened in the last book it is worth your time to reread the last few chapters! I hadn't read the last few chapters in a few months while waiting for the new volume to come out and I was completely lost at what was happening lol. The relationship between the two main characters is continuing to be a dynamic of mental health recovery and support. This is the primary theme that is addressed mostly in the first part. The main character finally makes progress in communication and figuring out the best way to proceed forward and maybe even help his beloved overcome trauma. Unfortunately, the fates refused to let things go smoothly and when the poo hits the fan it is world ending.

I continue to be really upset by the hand dealt to the secondary character An Long, who is not just a pitiful character but one that was a cherished friend to the main character. I feel like so much effort was put into developing and making such a likable character and then throwing him under the bus just to add some tension. I don't know why but it really rubbed me the wrong way.

With the reset I feel like I'm almost reading a fanfic exploring an alternate timeline option. It is positively bizarre, but it has its interesting aspects to it. The biggest ones being who knows what and who doesn't know what. There's also an extreme teasing of finally having the Big WTF reveal only to dodge it mysteriously. Clearly there's a lot more going on behind the scenes that goes beyond what surface level shows. We already kind of knew that but we didn't know how involved the MC is with all the nonsense. He doesn't know either, which is part of the problem.

I know I'm being pretty vague, I'm trying to avoid significant spoilers while still going over the bits that were worth calling out. Overall I have every intention of continuing to read the series, I'm going to be twitching until October when it finally comes out... Which is about 4 months out? That being said I'm not sure how many more volumes are going to be written. I feel like it was so close to wrapping up in this volume and then they hit the reset button. So I'm not sure how that places things as far as the staging of the series. I also hope that the reset button serves a bigger plot point then just not wanting to finish the story in three books.

This took a number of weird and unexpected turns, but it was a fun ride! I gasped when the author slipped a casual 3000 year time skip, because, sure, why not? but I confess to being a tiny bit confused by the mechanics of what the "system" is and why it hates Yue Wuhuan quite so much and who Song Qingshi is if he's been trying this more than a thousand times? I can't tell if the answers were in the text and I just wasn't paying enough attention, or if it is all as confusing as I think it is. A lot seems to be explained in allusion and metaphor, and I'm just not comfortable inferring things when I have no idea what's going on and I could easily make the wrong assumption.

I would be more annoyed by all of these things (the tumultuous pace, the strange left turns in the plot, the fluctuations in characterisation etc.) if I expected an actual coherent plot from my satire/silly danmei reads. This was always going to be absurd when the central premise was an autistic bedridden modern person transmigrating to a xianxia world and saving the wrong character. If anything, it's kind of amazing that the plot has as much depth as it does.

Overall, I think a lot is riding on the final volume of this. It will either make or break the story. The first two volumes were very consistent, and this one has kind of shattered the norm, but if it goes the way I'm hoping it will, the fourth will be able to tie it all up sweetly.

I'm rating this a 3 mostly because it just felt incredibly messy.
It took me longer to read, which I'm sort of ashamed of, because of 2-3 different heat waves which made it difficult for me to read because of sweaty hands and tanked mental states, luteal state which makes me lose interest and focus in things. But on top of that, just how messy this volume was and that made it somewhat difficult to read.

I really enjoy the whole story and concept of Misvil but I feel like it has very mixed execution. I feel like it introduces things then drops them or forgets about them. The whole getting revenge on those that wronged Yue Wuhuan was dropped fairly quickly then ultimately resolved by Yue Wuhuan himself.
I have somewhat complicated feelings about it but I also feel like I'm in too deep to drop it. I also do genuinely enjoy it and the characters, not so much the internal artwork, but I definitely have mixed feelings on it.
Oh I also think that the world building isn't that great? Like the world seems cool and fun and whimsical, Cultivators are more often than not depicted as being the worst of the worst which makes a change from what I've otherwise read, but I feel like I don't know enough of the world for it to feel real or alive? I can't really explain it.

This cover is one of the most beautiful things I've seen though.

I absolutely adored the two first, I loooove when the ML is obsessive, psychoticly in love and ready to sacrifice the world for the MC. So I thought this was gonna be my next fave danmei… but oh boy this volume was a train wreck. What the F was up with that pacing!! Like why are we running!!! I had to check multiple times if I had missed a page or so… cuz the plot was all over the place. It was wayyyyy too rushed everywhere….

I’m still gonna finish the series as I have the same hope for the fourth volume as the two first ones had.

i was really enjoying this up until a certain big reveal. i thought it was a bold move and was a good twist to the typical transmigration plot, but i just dont think it was done in a clear way. it didnt quite stick the landing. started to get really info-dumpy and i couldnt reason out why decisions were made regarding the fucking huge time jump. i think the author had no concept of how much time that really was… lmao

For the first half of the book, I was expecting this to be a 4 star read. But the twist, which has been used in danmei before, felt very contrived in this instance. I still enjoy the story, but the mechanization used here to draw out the plot just felt silly.
