Since moving to Calne, Wiltshire in 2016, I have discovered an enduring interest in the history of this wonderful town. To explore more deeply, I started a Facebook group called Calne in Photographs, and have been blessed with many members who generously share their insights, knowledge, and memories.
My first book, Calne Place Names, published in 2020, was an attempt to share what I’d learned and researched about Calne in my first four years of living here. It offers an overview of the town’s history through the lens of its place names—both official and unofficial—used over the centuries.
In 2025, I released a second edition of Calne Place Names expanding and refining the original with updated research. This edition reflects not only new discoveries but also a commitment to keeping the volume updated as Calne continues to develop.
Alongside this, Calne Curiosities was published, bringing together lesser-known stories, architectural quirks, and historical oddities that animate Calne’s character. Designed to be both engaging and inclusive, it invites readers to explore the town’s heritage with curiosity and warmth.
Calne Walks, published in 2022, brings together some of the wonderful walks taken over the years and includes the brand new Calne Art Trail. It offers a gentle invitation to explore the town’s landscape and history on foot.
I write in a conversational and accessible style in an attempt to reach as many readers as possible—whether lifelong residents or newcomers discovering Calne for the first time.
