The artwork is rather poor and I didn't enjoy the artwork, but the story is rather cute. There is a rainstorm and the dame breaks and Hesters house is flooding. Her big red dog is named Red Moose, I love that, and they run up to the attic and their house is swept down the river and Hester is Hanging on to the weather vane. Everyone is shouting Hang On, Hester, and she does so, all down the river until she is rescued. She becomes famous around the world for hanging on.
The best part of the story is the last few pages. Hester gets mail from all over the world of people who read her story and a painter fell off his ladder and he hung on to the eave. He thought Hester held on, I can too. There were about 4 stories like this and they cracked me up. It was a touch of comedy gold.
I read this story over on Openlibrary - a great resource for books out of print and when your library is closed.
I don't read these computer stories to the kids, so I don't know what they think.
Of course I love the Devlin's Cranberryport and Old Black Witch stories, but even this little stand-alone very early chapter book has that special charm in both illustrations and story. It doesn't end with the rescue... creative and original.
This and several others by the Devlins are avl. on Open Library.
Hester is home alone and the rain keeps coming. Right up to her doorstep, and then up into the second floor, until the flood sweeps her house away, and with her in the attic!
A tale about a little girl who uses her wits until she’s rescued.
