On Christmas break in Denmark to meet Asbjorn’s family, Sean almost dares to relax again—until the news of Frank Pettel’s sensational jailbreak hits the web. Sean played bait to put the serial sex offender behind bars, and now Sean feels the target reappear between his shoulder blades. He could keep hiding away in Europe, but college won’t wait, and Sean was never the one to take the coward’s way out.
Using his military and martial arts experience, Asbjorn assesses the major failure of the justice system that led to Pettel's escape. Yet removing one problem introduces Asbjorn has never dealt with his own post-traumatic stress. As he goes hunting for the man who is a direct threat to his loved one, his grasp on reality slips. Watching Asbjorn's change, Sean’s confidence erodes. To further complicate things, Asbjorn’s deadly silence creates secrets that test the bond of trust that binds them. An older, wiser voice helps them understand that behind the bloodstained veil of secrecy, there is space enough for love.
Kate Pavelle learned to use a gas mask in first grade, fired her first VZ50 in her sixth grade civil defense class and her dog was a wolf hybrid stolen from the Czechoslovak border guard. Her eccentric father blew out the windows of their house with a stun grenade. Her high-stakes childhood leaves Kate searching for the next exciting thing: martial arts, horses, toxic mushrooms. Her quests resonates through her suspense, thrillers and romances. Kate once knew the hunger of being a political refugee and the terror of being pursued by government agents. She imbues her characters with her own struggle for survival, excellence, and world domination. Only the dead bodies are imaginary.
Sean and Asbjorn have been through a lot in their young lives, both as individuals and even more so since becoming a couple. When they vacation together in Denmark, Asbjorn's home, then Ireland, Sean's home, they learn more about each other and their pasts. But while they are away the man that sent them across the ocean in the first place escapes from prison, and Sean is scared. Frank Pattel promised Sean he'd kill him if he ever got out, well, now he's out and eluding capture, all while taunting Sean and Asbjorn.
Asbjorn is determined to protect the man he loves, regardless of the cost, and in doing so he sends himself into a downward spiral of regret and painful memories of a past he has never fully overcome. Sean mistakes Asbjorn's withdrawn attitude as him having second thoughts about their relationship and makes a few mistakes of his own, only surmounting the inevitable. If Asbjorn can't be honest with Sean and himself about who he is, what he has done, then Frank Pattel is the least of their worries.
I had some issues with this story, let me start with what I enjoyed. I really liked the journey to both men's home and the insight into how and where they were raised, it gave them a little more depth and explained their personalities somewhat. I was intrigued by the dynamics of the two couples, Asbjorn and Sean then Don and Adrian, and how they played off of each other, how they connected in a way. And just as with the first book in this series, I love the way Pavelle has woven this tale of mystery and suspense into a world of maritial arts, the two main characters so flawed and co-dependent on each other it's almost frightening.
Unfortunately there was too much going on in this story and I was confused at times. The flow wasn't cohesive either when jumping from Asbjorn to Sean and back, again, I was confused. I didn't get the connection with the fight toward the end either unlike the similar situation in the first book.
Even with the hiccups along the way, I'll tune in for the next installment in this series because I'm invested in these characters and their story now. I have to know if they are going to get their happy ever after, or at least their happy for now. If you like books with a lot of action and suspense you should try the Fall Trilogy, there is romance as well it's just not in your face romance. Start at the beginning though or you'll really be confused.
** I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through MM Good Book Reviews **
This starts right where Breakfall left off, and just as Bjorn and Sean were starting their lives over again, trouble found them yet again with the threat of the first book's antagonist's return.
I was anticipating a lot of suspense, what with the blurb and the build-up, and the tension, but was a bit irked when Bjorn's vengeance/hunt solved that problem real quick (as in blink-and-you'll-miss-it). Granted, it was understandable that he wanted to eliminate the threat to Sean's safety immediately, but it was still a letdown that 25% in and pretty much most of the story is done.
Sean's petty, childish tendencies really annoyed me. Way to mess it all up, Sean.
Other than that, I loved Bjorn's protective instincts (thought, it was kind of scary, too), and his willingness to protect Sean no matter what, even at the cost of his own morality.
Problems solved (for now, at least), the two start a new chapter together. I loved the ending that showed them healing together, away from well-meaning yet meddling friends, and just reconnecting, and hopefully getting lots of rest before the third book. :P
In the first book of the Fall series, Breakfall, Sean is brutally attacked and spends most of the book on the run from a dangerous stalker/assassin. At the end of that book Sean and his lover Asbjorn have found a measure of peace and security until something terrible and unexpected happens. Swordfall begins exactly where Breakfall left off, with the stalker/assassin once again threatening the safety and life of Sean. This tears away Sean’s confidence in himself as a martial arts sensei and begins to grind into the foundation of his love for Asbjorn. A trip to see Asbjorn’s family in Denmark adds more stress and the loss of all of their possessions to a vicious attack just about destroys their burgeoning relationship. Asbjorn decides it is his responsibility to eliminate the threat to Sean and that is not without its own risk to Asbjorn’s own liberty and freedom. This is a thrilling adventure, full of excitement, hot sex, menace, and ultimately a love between two men that won’t be stopped short of death. I loved both of these books and look forward with great anticipation to the third book in the series, which will let us know how Sean and Asbjorn are doing a couple of years down the road. Ms. Pavelle has truly hooked me on this series! To learn more about the extraordinary background of this talented author please continue with her partial autobiography, as reviewed next.
I have to commend Pavelle on her smooth POV changes between multiple characters, especially Sean and Asbjorn, which were never confusing, awkward, or choppy. However, while I am not against using big words, when I do, I try not to stop people in their tracks and force them to google the word like I had to do at one point in Swordfall.
I actually found the characters more engaging in this installment. Sean was a little less of a whiner, which made him more likable, and Asbjorn showed a remarkable amount of depth of character as he navigated some very difficult situations. The many secondary characters were all familiar to me, having all been featured in Breakfall, and what was neat was that some of those characters also exhibited significant learning and growth, not the usual fare when it comes to a supporting cast.
I think I’m charmed, as I won a copy of Swordfall, after winning a copy of Breakfall when it came out. Swordfall continues the lives of Sean and Asbjorn, who both practice some form of martial arts. They have a great vacation visiting family in Denmark and Ireland, but must return to school and the threat of Sean’s stalker who broke out of jail. The story details dealing with this threat and the repercussions of the resolution. Without giving anything away, the book definitely has a HEA, or at least HFN. Now I have to wait again until the third book in the Fall Trilogy is published!
A fun and entertaining trilogy with really, really sexy and sweet MC's. You really do need to read the first book "Breakfall" before reading this one. This story starts immediately following the end of the first book.
This is a direct continuation of the first book, Breakfall. Unlike the first book, this book is much easier to read, at least for those of us that are not martial arts students or enthusiasts.
In this book, the danger has moved beyond just Sean, and his friends are going to make sure he survives; no matter the cost. Unfortunately, the measures taken not only protect Sean, but slowly destroy Asbjorn's psyche and the relationship between the two.
Sean is left feeling abandoned and heartbroken. When his misguided plans backfire, he is left with guilt and confusion. It's not until their friends intervene that the two come within speaking distance with each other. However, a possible threat is brought into their place of safety. Due to this man's actions and words, our MCs are reunited, and Asbjorn is finally able to achieve some peace.
But, the question in my mind is this: is this newcomer really going to let bygones be bygones, or is there a more sinister role he has yet to play?
Happy reading!
