Spanning 2 million years, this book examines how humans partnered with nature, technology, and each other to shape their world, from evolutionary origins and ancient innovations to the rise of artificial intelligence.
This book examines how humans collaborated with other entities, expanding in scale from individuals to other species of Homo, and further to the formation of groups, interactions with organisms, connections with past generations, and the transformative role of technology. Through dozens of vivid examples –from the lives of Neanderthals to the origins of agriculture, the impact of ancient diseases, the practices of shamans, Bronze Age innovations, global trade routes, and the products of the world's first cities – this narrative illuminates the intricate web of partnerships that defined human history. The final chapter delves into artificial intelligence, illustrating how its evolution mirrors the co-evolution of humans with technologies.
AI's rapid development of learning and collaborative abilities echoes humanity's own adaptive journey, albeit at an accelerated pace. Richly illustrated with over 50 full-color figures, this book offers a visually engaging and intellectually stimulating journey through the partnerships that have shaped our world, from the dawn of prehistory to the cutting edge of AI.
Collaborators through Time presents an ambitious and thought-provoking examination of human evolution, spanning nearly two million years of interconnected progress. Rather than focusing on isolated achievements or individuals, the book emphasizes the power of collaboration—between humans, nature, and advancing technologies—as the true driver of civilization.
From early human ancestors and Neanderthals to the rise of agriculture, ancient diseases, and global trade systems, the narrative consistently reinforces the idea that progress is built on shared systems and collective adaptation. This thematic consistency gives the book a strong intellectual foundation.
The pacing remains steady despite the vast timeline, with each chapter logically building upon the last. Complex anthropological and historical concepts are presented in a clear and accessible manner, making the book suitable for both general readers and those with a deeper interest in the subject.
One of the book’s standout features is its visual design. The inclusion of numerous full-color illustrations and figures enhances comprehension and adds depth to the reading experience, helping readers better understand timelines, patterns, and connections across eras.
The final sections, which explore artificial intelligence, effectively bridge past and present, suggesting that humanity’s relationship with technology is simply the latest phase in an ongoing pattern of co-evolution.
Overall, this is an engaging, well-crafted work that successfully combines intellectual depth with readability, making it a valuable addition for readers interested in history, anthropology, and the future of human innovation

Across 152 pages, Bentley and O'Brien offer dozens of vivid examples, from Neanderthals and early agriculture to global trade routes, Bronze Age innovations, shamanic practices, and the world’s first cities. The authors highlight how partnerships with nature, past generations, and technology have driven human progress. The final chapter draws connections to artificial intelligence, illustrating how AI development mirrors humanity’s historical co-evolution with tools and systems.
The book succeeds in combining historical breadth, scientific insight, and visual clarity, including over fifty full-color figures that enhance understanding and engagement. It offers readers an intellectually stimulating journey through the partnerships that have defined human history and continue to shape the future.
Students, scholars, and readers interested in history, anthropology, technology, and AI will find Collaborators through Time a concise, engaging, and thought-provoking work.
Loved this. Wish all academic writing had such clarity. Perhaps Bentley's best work so far, I really enjoyed the nuanced way he pushes against the idea that progress comes from "brilliant men" working alone (a popular Hollywood fiction, certainly) showing instead that cooperation and collaboration are at progress's core every time.
The perspective that AI will become yet another partner humanity will learn to work with over time is refreshing and new; Bentley helps us garner a curiosity about how we'll work with it rather than further alarming us what could go wrong.
Short book that still covers a lot of ground with examples across time. Loved the chapters on ancient shamans and on big bodies. Nice color images throughout if you read it on your phone
