Book 1 in the Monsters of Hallow's End
Hallow's End is a small town that Emma grew up in. It wasn't explicitly stated, but it stounded like Emma moved away for college and maybe some work experience as a journalist before returning home to Hallow's End. She has a small job as the town's blogger (I think that's what was stated). While attending the town's Harvest Festival (for her job) Emma was asked by the mayor to step in and be the Harvest Queen (as the woman who was supposed to do it got sick or didn't show up).
Being crowned Harvest Queen has now entered Emma, unknowingly, into a binding contract with the Pumpkin King. After the festival has ended Emma is drawn to the edge of a field of corn where she meets the Pumpkin King who explains that she can either willingly enter into a partnership with him or her spirit will enter a between world that's neither living nor dead. (Some choice, right?)
Emma asks a lot of questions and Samhuinn (the Pumpkin King, who is eons old), answers them calmly and honestly. He has wished for a partnership for his entire existence, and has been "watching" Emma for about 8 years or so. He knows all about her and is in love with her (although he keeps the last part to himself until she decides for to willingly be with him).
This was a unique short story and I liked the plot and both the main characters. So, what were my problems? They were little at first, but kept increasing to where I was annoyed before reaching the end of the novella (hence my rating).
My issues:
- Emma thinks of a Headlines for her life at least once a chapter (if not more... got annoying)
- There were contradictions that were annoying (Emma was allergic to cinnamon, then she wasn't and then at the end she was again) (basically continuity errors that should have been caught by an editor)
- Lack of monster spice (1.5 romance scenes total, neither were anything more than a regular romance, a really huge missed opportunity especially for a monster romance)
- Lust, not love on Emma's side for Samhuinn
