ARC review:

🇬🇧
"Duel for the Throne" follows the captivating journey of Crown Princess Salandra, who faces a heart-wrenching decision that could alter her fate and cost someone their life. The story immerses readers in a beautifully crafted romantic fantasy, where Salandra's struggles are compelling. connections that are sure to delight readers.

The narrative isn't burdened by a complex fantasy system, allowing for a smooth reading experience right from the start. While intricate plot twists are minimal, the author cleverly weaves enough elements to keep the story engaging. I found myself hooked during the dramatic moments, which the author candidly addresses in her acknowledgments, but I'd absolutley loved that scene.

If you're looking for an accessible romantic fantasy with a perfect blend of tension and intrigue, "Duel for the Throne" is a must-read! Just a note: expect some surprises and spicy moments that might catch you off guard when reading in public!

🇳🇱

I was lucky to receive this book as an arc from Wgriffin publishing and Rachel Elisabeth.

I was really excited to read this ARC because the idea behind Duel for the Throne is so much fun. A heroine caught between Rodin, the sweet blonde good guy with total golden retriever energy, and Vladimir, the brooding man with a tragic past. The setup had everything I love.

The story started strong and the world immediately pulled me in, but as things moved forward I felt like some of the tension and excitement got lost. Every time something big happened it was followed by very quick transitions, almost as if the moment was brushed over before it had the chance to land.

Vladimir’s moody edge also faded a little for me, and the shift to both men suddenly wanting to be with her felt a bit abrupt. The ending had the same feeling. A lot of important things came to light, but they were addressed so fast that I did not have time to fully take them in.

Even so, the core idea is genuinely good and there is a lot of potential in this world and these characters. I am still very curious to see where the next book will go and how the relationships and the bigger plot will develop. I think readers who enjoy fast paced fantasy romance with a love triangle vibe will still have a great time with this one.

Arc: Duel for the throne and beautiful dark romance from Rachel Elisabeth.

In the mighty kingdom of Varethys, the crown passes down through the generations. Crown Princess Salandra must make a choice, a choice that will completely change her life and the lives of two princes. Only one prince will gain an advantage in the age-old tradition of The Throne Duel. A duel to the death for the princess's hand.
But what if Salandra can't choose?

The author knows how to keep you gripped by suspense and nearly gives you a heart attack by the end. She's written this plot beautifully. Her writing style is fluid, making the book a breeze to read. You get to know the characters better as the story progresses. The chapters flow beautifully, and the descriptions of the characters and events bring everything to life.

This is the first book I've read by Rachel Elisabeth, but I'm instantly hooked and want to read more. A wonderful author who occasionally throws you off track, which is precisely what makes it so great.

I had the honor to ARC read Duel for the Throne by Rachel Elisabeth, even though it is already available. I also thank W. Griffin Publishing for the opportunity to ARC read for them. I didn't have any expectations for this book and went in fairly blind, so open-minded review coming in!

The first thing that gripped my attention we little chapter swag this book had going on every chapter.

This story is told from Salandra's point of view. The crown princess selected our love interests Rodin and Vladimir from a pool of princes offered to her. The two need to duke it out in the duel for the throne and Salandra's hand in marriage. The more Salandra gets to know both princes, the harder it gets for her to make a choice. Which prince will win her hand?

I really enjoyed the characters a lot in this book. From the brash Rodin to the brooding but cheeky Vladimir. I did wonder if this book would be a love triangle or a why-choose. I have my answer now, but I won't be spoiling it for you just yet.

If I had to link this book with a song, it would be 'Take me Back to Eden' by Sleep Token!

All in all I have to say I was sad when this story ended. I really wanted more of this fast-paced story, so I can't wait for the next part in this installment. If you like romantic tension in a court-setting, this is definitely the book for you to pick up!

First of all, thanks to Rachel and Wgriffinpublishing for this ARC 🫶🏻

Duel for the Throne is marketed as a romantasy, so I went into it expecting a blend of romance and fantasy elements. While I understand this is only the first book in the series, I was surprised to find that it reads much more like a historical romance, with no fantasy woven into the narrative. Even small hints or early traces of the fantastical would have helped set expectations for what’s to come, so I found myself missing that aspect.

For my taste, the world-building also felt quite minimal. That’s something I usually value immensely, especially in a series that promises to expand into fantasy later on. I would have loved a stronger sense of place, culture, or (magic) system to ground me in the world.

The pacing is fast, which definitely makes it an easy and accessible read — I flew through it in a short amount of time, and the writing style is clear and enjoyable. However, the quick pace also meant that I missed some emotional depth and character development. I’m personally a big fan of slow burn dynamics and layered character arcs, so the story didn’t fully deliver what I look for in these genres. The why choose trope also isn’t really my preference it seems, which likely added to the disconnect.

All that said, I did have a good time reading it. It’s entertaining, easy to get through, and I can see why readers who enjoy historical romance and the why choose dynamic would connect strongly with it. Even though it wasn’t entirely my thing, I think fans of those elements will find it a compelling start to the series! 🖤

Not exactly what I expected. From the synopsis and cover, I was expecting more fantasy elements. It did have those things but was so light on the world building, even for a first book. I expected a bit more. However, the story was fast paced and I love where the plot is going. I will definitely be reading book 2 because I did enjoy Salandra's pov and her story. The choices she made, her voice, everything. I cant wait to see what book 2 has in store for her. Plus the two Princes were 🥵🥵🥵🥵 a dream come true for any girl.

"This is for those of you who never grew out of dreaming about princesses, castles and finding your prince charming." 👑

Imagine you are the eldest daughter of the king and queen.
Because of an ancient tradition you hold the lives of two princess in your hands. Because you have to choose one of the two to give the upperhand in a battle to the death.
But what happens when choosing seems to be impossible because you find yourself in love with both of them?

"May Varos be with yoy and may the strongest prince win."

How can you possible choose between a dark, introverted brooding prince and a gentle, courteous and cheeky prince?
Salandra the crown princess of Varethys faces this choice. Who will she choose? Prince Vladimir of Vaeloria or Prince Rodin of Braemorn?

▪︎ 1 princess 2 princes
▪︎ duel to death
▪︎ sacrifice
▪︎ yearning

Rachel is taking you on a ride in this book. For me it is the first book I have read by Rachel Elisabeth. What a ride! My heart, there were tears involved while reading.
Love that it is so easy to connect with Salandra. I felt her struggle. Extensive world building, easy to follow and impossible to put down. I received this book as an ARC (Thank you so much for the opportunity), but I have also already bought the book when I didn't even finish it yet. I think that speaks volums.

One of my favorite quotes:

My first real ARC review 🚨 Overall I really enjoyed Duel for the Throne! I haven’t read one like this yet so i was so excited to review. It’s a quick and easy read perfect for a cozy night in with a few candles lit and a nice pumpkin pie met slagroom 🥧

2 princes are tasked with fighting to the death for Salandra’s hand in marriage but their hearts get in the way for a dramatic twist ending I honestly did not see coming ❤️ It started off a little slow but then it turned into the why choose romance I needed right now 🤗

Vibe check: ⚔️🌊🐎👑📖⛰️
Tropes: forbidden love, why choose, MFM
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Virginal 20yo FMC Princess Salandra was lowkey living my dream with both a dark-and-broody and a golden retriever who are both obsessed with her 🥵 I just love when a man (or two) calls his girl “princess.” Salandra reads spicy books (from her grandmother no less!) and never thought about touching herself but did think up a scheme for a 3way lol I love that for her 😂

MMC Rodin was just a pure little soul I loved him. Bonus points because he ✨finished✨in his pants!! We love a man who can’t reign himself in.

I wanted a little more character development for Vladimir though 🫣 I feel like there was a desire to portray him as a morally gray, tortured type of MMC but his past unfortunately wasn’t really explained so it didn’t quite fit that trope.

I NEED to know more about Cassara and Damien as well! Can’t wait for the next books 🥰

Thank you to the author for this arc copy and opportunity to read and write an honest review

We meet our FMC a crown princess Salandra. She is faced with the unenviable task of finding her future husband through an age long tradition that makes 2 suitors Prince Rodin our blonde haired handsome kindhearted MMC and Prince Vladimir our broody dark haired handsome second MMC. They are forced to fight to the death for her hand. As part of this tradition she has to spend time with them in the lead up to the final duel and by doing so she has to pick her favourite Prince and gift him with the strongest weapon.
BUT…. Can she choose? which one will die? will she rebel against the traditions in her quest to find herself, love and her husband to be?

I really enjoyed Rachel’s fast paced writing style. The characters are easy to like. The world in which this story unfolds in sounds lovely but would have like maybe a little more world building particularly around the kingdom, this is purely because I was enjoying the story.
I would recommend reading this book if you love a fast paced why choose romantasy, with:

❤️touch her and die
❤️forced proximity
❤️one princess two princes
❤️forbidden love
❤️ deadly duel
❤️ancient tradition
❤️spice (but relevant to the story) 2-3🌶️

So from the first page I read, I was intrigged by this book. The stubbornness from Salandra to go against the old traditions of the kingdom. How she stil dared to do the things she liked despite everything that was said she could not do because she is the crown princess. The moment Vladimir and Rodin were introduced in the story you instantly felt the tension between Salandra and each of her princes, this was so wel written. For a book that is (if my kindle is right) a little bit over 200 pages the pace did not feel rushed especially that the timeline was only a month. I was certain that the ending would go differently, but i could not be more wrong. The only thing that i find a shame is that this book is advertised as a romantasy. How I experienced it was more that is was set in the middle ages with there traditions and rules that are conected to it. For fantasy i did not find any elements of that and i missed that. It is a good book otherwise i would not have read it in 2 days. The writingstyle really helped to.

I loved the premise of the book where there is a duel to the death to determine who wins the hand of the princess. This had me anxious for the princess in having to go through this process and make the decision over which prince to choose. There were some parts of the story where it seemed like there was a big controversy or struggle being built up but the issues were resolved with just a few words. This book says Part One but does not end in a cliffhanger so I’m super curious as to what the next book will be about!

Thank you for these amazing arc read

Caught between duty, tradition and her own heart

Crownprincess must choose who she gives the strongest weapon in a duel between two princes for her hand

Prince Rodin: sweet golden retriever energy and a flirt
Prince vladimir: dark, broody, and Maybe there is something more behind his story.

How can she choose between those two and why does she has to…

Its a fast Pacing book but the world building is still good which makes it a good book to start reading romantasy

When Rachel asked if I wanted to read her newest book in advance, of course I couldn’t say no! This time she had written a romantasy for the first time, one of my favorite genres.

And from the very beginning I was completely drawn into the story. I finished it within a few days; I simply couldn’t put it down and had to know how it ended.

In The Throne Duel we follow Princess Salandra, who, according to the ancient traditions of the kingdom of Varethys, must make a choice between two princes. The winner of the Throne Duel will marry her, and the other will not survive.

Salandra invites Prince Rodin, who looks like a Viking warrior with long blond hair but has the personality of a golden retriever. And then there’s Prince Vladimir, or Vladje as I affectionately call him: tall, dark, handsome, and brooding. What more could you want? (You can probably guess who my favorite was.)

Salandra faces a difficult decision: which of these delightful princes will she choose to spend the rest of her life with? She has little experience with love herself and finds the lead-up to the Throne Duel far too busy, with too many social obligations, so she often retreats to her own room. Her younger sister, Lucetta, criticizes her for this and believes Salandra is neglecting her duties.

But who will she choose? And who won’t survive? Read all about it at the end of this month in this homegrown Dutch romantasy.

ARC Review " Duel for the throne " by @rachel_elisabethnl

Are you ready for a wild ride?

Holy moly she did it again.. i loved this book from start to finish. Last chapters where a whirlwind of emotions.

In this book you follow prinses Salandra who has the most impossible decision ever to make. In the upcoming Duel for the throne. She had two princes who will fight for her hand. And their lives. She will have to choose one to give an advantage too. But what happens if she can't choose?

I loved the why choose part of this book. Because why would you have to choose between two totally different princes is you can have both 😏.

Please make a part two @rachel_elisabethnl ? Please 🙏🏻

Thank you @rachel_elisabethnl and @w.griffinpublishing for this ARC. I enjoyed ever second of it.

This was good! I was hooked from the first page and got completely taken into this interesting world where a crown princess has to choose between two princes. The way Rachel describes the surroundings and immerses you in the castle, the grounds, the lifestyle and rules of this place that is unknown, is intriguing and beautiful. I felt for Salandra and I fell in love with both Vladimir and Rodin.
I also love her the youngest sister and the best friend and the spicy scenes are spicing 😉
A great, fast-paced, interesting and entertaining read! Go get it! I can’t wait to read more of this series!

4.5⭐️
First of all, a huge thank you to W.Griffin and Rachel for the ARC! 🤍✨

Duel for the Throne: Part One is Rachel’s very first romantasy… and wow, she absolutely nailed it.🤩The world of Varethys is super easy to get into, no complicated magic systems, no info-dumps, just a smooth, addictive story that I devoured in a single day.😋

In Varethys, the crown passes from generation to generation, and Crown Princess Salandra must choose which prince gets an advantage in the ancient tradition of the Throne Duel, a duel to the death for her hand. No pressure, right?

But here’s the problem: Salandra can’t choose between the two princes fighting for her🫣

🩵 Rodin : the golden retriever prince with blue eyes, blond hair, and pure sunshine energy
🖤 Vladimir : the dark-haired, grumpy prince, who steals your heart without even trying

And honestly? I get her. I can’t choose either🤭
Both princes show their love for Salandra in completely different ways, and trust me… you’ll fall for both. Two new book boyfriends unlocked!!!🥰

The pacing felt a bit fast at times, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment, it was still such an easy, entertaining, romantic, tension-filled read that kept me turning pages like crazy.❤️‍🔥

ARC read - Not a Romantasy

If you're in for a short&sweet meet cute about a princess and two princes, this little novel is a good pick. However, the book is being marketed as romantasy and if that's what you're expecting be prepared for a let-down.

There are no fantasy elements although the author has tried, but just mentioning fictional countries and one fictional god does not make it a fantasy, besides they seem to coexist with ours (see: mentions of Italy, Vikings, and Cupid amongst others)

There is no world building and the characters lack depth.

Storywise, there is foreshadowing and there is just telling people what's going to happen, which the author does as early as page 47.
There is a lot of 'telling'  rather than 'showing'. The writing is very good at some points: the smutty scenes. There is a lot of care, attention and detail in those but unfortunately not so much in the rest making the story feel rushed as if not even the author really cared what happened in between the sex scenes.

That also becomes apparent from the language. There are quite some errors (typos), some grating translation, and a lot of shifting tenses.

Overall, this reads like a first draft or something rushed into publication before it was too late to jump on the romantasy trend. I think the author has a lot to work on concerning this genre because fantasy it is not. Not by a long shot.

“It’s my choice, father. My responsibility. And it is my decision.”

In the mighty kingdom of Varethys, the crown passes down through the generations. Crown Princess Salandra is forced to make choice, a choice that will completely change her life and the lives of Prince Rodin and Prince Vladimir. She has only 3 weeks to decide who will get the advantage in the dual for the throne. A duel to the death for the princess's hand.
But what if Salandra can't choose?

I loved this book, it’s my first historical romance and I just fell in love with the FMC and the MMC’s. It’s written really good. The world building gets you straight into the world of Salandra and her princes. I forgot where I was and everything around me. It is written with a nice pace, the tension building slow but steady and the humor the author brings got me laughing out loud multiple times. And the spice is spicing!!!! I love it.

This book had me feeling all the feels, I really just could not stop reading. I give this book 4 stars, if you like reading historical romance with lovely spice this is a book for you.

I received this book as an arc and could not wait to read it. The story really spoke to me and is right up in my ally. The beginning of the book was very strong. The storyline was really good and I did not want to stop reading. However at the end book the book I feel like the story was rushed aswell as the emotions of the characters. I am very excited for the serie to continue.

I received the arc for this book but unfortunately I had to dnf around 50%. The premise of this book sounded really interesting to me but I just couldn’t get in to it. I did not find the relationships between the 3 characters believable. She says she is in love with them but I don’t think they had any more than 5 or so conversations.

A witty, dramatic , intense and fast paced book. Duel for the Throne took me straight into the kingdom of Varethys, where tradition demands a blood duel and love is tangled with power.

Crown Princess Salandra is caught between duty and desire as two princes are set to fight to the death for her hand in marriage and her crown.

Will Princess Salandra be true to her duty to her kingdom and her people of Varethys and let the two princes fight till the death where she marries the winner, or will she follow her heart?

This book will keep you flipping through the pages much faster than you can imagine.

In Duel for the Throne, Rachel Elisabeth transports you to the powerful kingdom of Varethys, where the crown passes from mother to daughter. Crown Princess Salandra faces an impossible choice: only one prince will receive an advantage in the ancient tradition of the Throne Duel — a deadly battle between two princes for her hand.
But what if Salandra can’t choose at all?
And… what if her heart has already made a dangerously forbidden move?

I was so excited when I received the ARC of Duel for the Throne. Ever since reading Ja meneer, I’ve been following Rachel’s writing journey closely, and once again this book does not disappoint.
The medieval setting is wonderfully crafted: rich enough to feel immersive, without the overwhelming worldbuilding that slows things down. The pacing stays consistently strong, and Salandra and her sisters are fantastic characters.
(Lucetta absolutely deserves her own spotlight in the next books 👀)

The love triangle is messy, intense, and addictive in all the right ways.
And the spice? Steaming hot, exactly what we’ve come to expect from Rachel.
If you love rivalry, crowns, sharp-witted princesses, and dangerous attraction: this one belongs on your TBR. An absolute recommendation. ⚔️✨

__________________________________________

Between crown and heart, a deadly choice.

Duel for the Throne by Rachel Elisabeth 😍
MH Books ❤️

Duel for the Throne immerses you in the intriguing kingdom of Varethys, where power is not self-evident and traditions weigh heavier than love. From the very first page, Rachel Elisabeth manages to create a charged atmosphere: a world in which women rule, but where the choice of one crown princess seals the fate of many. Salandra is not a passive heir to the throne; her inner struggle forms the beating heart of the story. The question is not only who deserves the throne, but also what a person is willing to sacrifice for duty.

What sets this book apart is the moral tension surrounding the centuries-old Duel for the Throne. The duel to the death is not gratuitous spectacle, but a sharp instrument to explore themes such as free will, responsibility, and love. The two princes are not simple opposites; they are layered, human, and each understandable in their own way. Precisely because of this, Salandra’s inability to choose feels painfully real, and the reader is constantly left doubting what the “right choice” actually is.

Rachel Elisabeth writes vividly and accessibly, with enough pace to maintain the tension and sufficient emotional depth to move the reader. Duel for the Throne is highly recommended for lovers of fantasy with romantic and psychological layers: a story that does not only ask who wins, but above all who loses and why.

ARC Review - Capturing!

What if you are a crown princess... And there is this tradition in place that makes 2 suitors fight to the death for your hand...And you have to gift your favorite the strongest weapon or this duel… BUT, you are unable to choose! This is the problem our FMC faces.

The Duel of the Throne follows crown princess Salandra in her impossible task to pick a favorite for the duel. On one side we have Rodin, he is our handsome golden retriever with his long blonde hair, on the other side we have Vladimir, tall, dark hair, handsome and broody. Tradition dictates that the winner of the duel gets Salandra's hand in marriage. While our crown princess gets to know our princes, she finds out the task is to hard and she can't choose. This is not the only thing Salandra rebels against. The story tells us how this all unfolds.

Rachel writes in a fast pacing writing style. The characters are well build and the world is lovely, but not overly, described. I love that the book surprised me in a couple of instances. I won't tell where because that would spoil the fun.

I would highly recommend reading this book if you love a fast pacing - why choose - romantasy book!

Ok, I love historical romance, so when I got the opportunity to read this it felt perfect. A little different from my recent arcs and a nice change of pace.

The world building was perfect, you felt drawn into Princess Salandras life as Eldest daughter, the obligations to the crown and future of the kingdom. Having to put aside your feelings to be representative of the family name even though you want nothing more than to stay hidden some days. Her relationships not just with her parents but also her sisters and feeling the resentment from ones younger than you just because of birth order.

The chemistry between Salandra and her soon to be choosen partner was palpable, would she choose the expected sweet blonde Rodin or Brooding dark haired Vladimir? Even i couldn't tell where it was going and as I went into this book completely blind without having read blurb or tropes it was such a fun experience. I loved seeing Salandra come into her own and making choices to ultimately risking everything for love.

I wish the ending had been a little more drawn out. I had been building up to getting ready to have my heart smashed and then the plot was kind of given instead of making us work for it. It felt like a missed opportunity I guess.

Thank you to Rachel Elisabeth and W Griffin publishing for the Advanced copy and I will definitely be reading book 2

ARC Review - Honest & Spoiler-Free

I was gifted an ARC of Duel for the Throne in exchange for an honest review - and honestly, I had a great time with this one.

Well… I started this thinking, aww, a cute YA romantasy!
And then - WHOA. The spice got spicy.
(100% not YA 😅)

We follow Crown Princess Salandra, trapped in an age-old tradition where two princes must fight to the death for her hand in marriage. No pressure, right?

On one side is Rodin - blonde, kind, golden-retriever energy.
On the other is Vladimir - dark, brooding, morally grey, and absolutely the one I was rooting for.

At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about Rodin, but he definitely grew on me. Salandra herself is bold and conflicted, thrown into an impossible situation where any choice has consequences - and honestly, she’s basically living the “fantasy book club dream” with these two.

The pacing is fast and addictive, the chemistry strong, and the romantic tension keeps the story moving in the best way.

Would I recommend it? Yes, absolutely.
Would I buy it? In a heartbeat.

I’m excited to see where book two goes!

I was lucky to receive this ARC from Wgriffin Publishing and Rachel Elisabeth, and the premise hooked me immediately. A crown princess torn between two princes who must duel to the death for her hand? YES PLEASE!!

Crown Princess Salandra is such an interesting lead. She is caught between duty, tradition, and her own heart. I loved getting to know both princes with her. Rodin has total golden-retriever energy with his blonde sweetness, and Vladimir brings the perfect broody, tragic-past contrast. Their dynamic with her is addicting, and watching the relationships develop made the story so fun.

The world itself is engaging right from the start with the traditions, the castle setting, the tension of the upcoming duel. It all of it creates that classic romantasy drama I love sinking into. The fast pacing made it really easy to keep reading, and the storyline has so much room to grow in future books.

If you love:
✨ royalty
✨ ancient traditions
✨ forced proximity
✨ golden-retriever vs. broody prince energy
✨ a princess caught between two impossible choices
✨ fast-paced romantasy

…this one is such a fun read, and I’m excited to see where the series goes next.
