How far would you go to change your life?

In the small American town of Hope, teenager Lucas Caldwell dreams of escaping his life. His mother, Liss, is struggling with addiction, and his sickly little brother, Reuben, would never survive her without him.

His grandfather, Lucky, is dying in a care facility, his mind fading. But in a final moment of clarity, he lets slip to Lucas that he is in possession of a painting worth millions, stolen from a transport convoy in a daring heist five decades ago. As the disbelief fades, a thin hope begins to grow.

But secrets as big as this rarely stay hidden for long, and as the corruption of money spreads, so does the threat of violence and bloodshed. And with hungry wolves circling the payday to end all paydays, the fallout could tear the town, and Lucas's family, apart.

Lucas would do anything to protect the people he loves. But at what cost?

A gut-wrenching, utterly compelling small-town crime thriller, laying bare the corrosive nature of greed and the trials and dangers of those living on the fringes of society.

How far would you go to change your life?

Lucas Caldwell lives in trailer park with his sickly younger brother and addict mother, in a small town called Hope. With his grandfather dying in a care facility and he being the only one who visits him, his grandfather in his confusion tells Lucas of a valuable painting he stole in his youth, that is hidden away. Once his grandfather passes away Lucas goes on the hunt for this painting, but nothing is ever simple or secret with this much money involved. Life then becomes even more dangerous for Lucas to navigate.

This is a hard hitting, story of the struggles of being poor in a small town in America, where the law enforcement are beholden to those with money. It's an interesting look at the concept of greed, power, perceived power, abuse and neglect of those forgotten about in the poorer communities and struggles that some face daily, with no support. I found this book absolutely gut wrenching to listen too, but was also hooked from the beginning.
What a brilliantly perceptive author Greene is, he gets the psychology of people and is so perceptive which makes you really feel like you know these characters.

I thoroughly enjoy the work of Morgan Greene, particularly the gripping Jamie Johansson series. That said, I have come to really admire his standalone work, which thrusts the reader into the middle of something highly unique. Hope is a town that no one with any sense would visit. Lucas Caldwell knows that and cannot wait to leave it in the dust. After a family emergency leaves Lucas with a mystery to solve, he gathers two of his closest friends to help. What they discover will not only open new mysteries, but also lead to a disastrous result that will leave Lucas with a target on his back. A chilling mystery that has all the elements needed for a strong thriller.

Hope is the type of small American town where people will do anything to leave, praying to change it all. Lucas ‘Lucky’ Caldwell is an eighteen-year-old who wants out, but his mother is an addict and little brother is sickly enough to need someone to watch out for him. At least Lucky has Bryson and Connie as friends.

While visiting his grandfather in a care facility, Lucky learns that the elder Caldwell was involved in a crime five decades earlier that yielded a highly valuable painting. Uttering a clue of sorts to Lucky, the man falls into a coma and soon passes. Lucky is left with the clues and must convince Bryson and Connie to join him on the adventure. What they discover will not only solidify the truth but also could make them quite wealthy. If only the landowner had not come upon them with a gun. After a skirmish, someone is dead and Lucky has yet another secret to keep.

With the truth still under wraps, someone within the group leaks what they know and soon there are multiple people who are seeking to capture not only the valuable painting, but to expose the truth. Putting a little pressure on Lucky will help things along, but this is no typical teenager. Lucky has had to fight for himself most of his life and he is ready to do so again. Gritty and determined, it will take all he has to fend off those who see to prey on him, which might include shedding a little more blood along the way. A great thriller that had all that I needed to keep my attention.

I have long enjoyed Morgan Greene’s novels, both the series work and standalone pieces. This was the second standalone novel of his I have read in the last week and I assure any who might be doubtful of them, things are in good hands. The solid story base helps push things along, with a great peppering of mystery to keep the reader wondering. Superior characters and a unique setting create an individual flavour for the story, something for which Greene is well known. The multiple perspectives of the same events enriches the story and forces the reader to remember what’s happened, as they are faced with the same scenario on numerous occasions. Greene is able to formulate a great story with tense plot points that never fail to deliver the needed surprise and left me flipping pages for hours on end, just to get some answers.

Kudos, Mr. Greene, for this impactful standalone!

Impressive! I was straight away immersed in the heavy, desolate, hopeless and ever so sad looking town! Brilliant descriptions of the setting which put me on edge from the beginning, feeling the heavy and creepy atmosphere of the whole place. The characters had depth, not very likeable but they felt real! The plot was complex, and up till the end, I couldn't see how it would really end. The storyline was interestingly structured giving the plot an even more thrilling touch..... I enjoyed this novel tremendously!

Thank you to author Morgan Greene for this FREE Kindle copy of A Place Called Hope.

I so much wanted to give this book a 4-star rating for the story. I really liked it, the characters, the atmosphere... the whole package. Cover design well done.

I so much wanted to give this book a 1-star rating for the pride-in-ownership of the end product. And to think of how simple it would have been to put out a quality product. The FREE version of Grammarly would have caught all of the issues here. This also hit me as strange based on your background. Sentences, as you well know, start with an upper case letter. Letters following are lower case. Way too many sentences starting with a lower case letter, and so easily seen, I don't understand an editor-by-trade, such as yourself, missing this (as well as the proofreaders). Funny, in a way, that the texting done between characters was 'tapped' correctly, with capitalization and punctuation. The real world of course is a slam to correct sentence structure and spelling in peoples texts, and even emails. So here, in your book, the body of the work should be corrected to use upper case, and the 'texting' should be corrected to be a mess of almost all lower case and random usage punctuation.

I really think you have a great book here Mr. Greene. It would be nice, thinking of your readers paying for this product, if you'd take some time to correct all the errors. Otherwise, I think this is a good read.

My mom had a word she used regularly to describe the way she felt about things she didn’t care for. She said, “Raunchy!” And that sums this book up perfectly!

This book totally captivated me from the start. I went into this book blind, never read the description, and it was worth it. From the very moment I fell in love with Lucas and his little brother Reuben. I understood their childhood, as mine was very similar so it touched on my heart and soul.

When Lucas finds out from his sickly grandfather about a secret from his past, the whole exciting journey begins. This book had my heart pounding the whole time, holding my breath, wondering who I could trust and how it would end. I truly loved this book from start to finish. 5 stars all day.

I absolutely loved this book. None of the characters are very likeable but that doesn't stop you wanting to know what they're going to do next. I loved how the story was told from different characters perspectives, which added different dimensions to the story. A great read.

Lucas Caldwell lives in a small town called Hope with his mother and younger brother, but all he dreams of is getting out of there and finding a better life. His mother is an addict who can't stay clean enough to hold a job, so it's Lucas who has to take care of himself and his younger brother. It seems like his life is never going to get better, until he discovers a secret that his grandfather - Lucky - has been keeping his whole life. It turns out that Lucky pulled off a robbery back in the 1960s of a very famous painting that is worth a lot of money. Unfortunately, the robbery went wrong and Lucky's best friend and his best friend's wife ended up dead. And while Lucky got away with the robbery, he had to hide the painting and all of the evidence in a storage shed.

When Lucky takes a fall in the nursing home he's living in and is dying, he says some things that lead Lucas to figuring out about the painting. Lucas knows getting the painting and selling it could change life for him and his little brother. But what will getting the painting cost him?

This is really a good story with lots of plot twists that are done very well. However, the story of what happens is told several different times from the perspective of various characters. While I understand what the author was trying to accomplish by doing that, it made the book much longer than it needed to be and slowed down the pace of the story. I think if the author would have eliminated at least some of the other perspectives and edited this down a bit, I probably would have given this four stars, as the premise of the story itself is very good.

I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I would have given this 4 stars as it was a great story, exciting and very moving.
However, the lack of capitals at the beginning of some random paragraphs was SO frustrating. Any proofreader would have picked this up so I can only assume it was deliberate. Why? Would love to know the thinking behind this.

The premise was good and I really liked the first 3rd of the book. But then the author repeated verbatim some of the script but from other people’s perspective. Too much time spent repeating the same scenes word for word.

It was ok. I was quite interested in the plot and the characters. I don’t like repetitions of the story from the viewpoint of different characters although this added another dimension to the plot. I would have preferred a different ending.

A Place Called Hope by Morgan Greene is a very highly recommended small-town crime thriller. This is an excellent, atmospheric, compelling novel that has great emotional depth.

Hope is the struggling, dying small town where Lucas Caldwell, 18, lives and wants to escape - but he can't. He has to take care of his little brother Rueben, who is delayed and acts younger than his 12 years. Their mother, Liss struggles with addiction to alcohol and drugs which makes her ability to hold a job problematic, let alone caring for her sons. Right now Lucas's job pays for food and clothes from the thrift store for Rueben. Liss has no idea how much Lucas does to make sure Rueben is cared for in her absence.

Liss ignores her father, Lucky, who is in a care facility, but Lucas loves his grandfather and visits him regularly. When Lucky takes a turn for the worse Lucas is able to talk to him just before he dies and Lucky confides a secret he has been holding for years. This secret leads to a decades old crime and potentially millions of dollars. Looking for the windfall that could bring his family out of poverty and provide for his little brother opens up the floodgates of violence, greed, and corruption.

Lucas is a fully realized character who has strengths and flaws. His care for Rueben is thoughtful and loving. He shares his grandfather's secret with his best friends, Bryson Shaw, son of the richest, greediest man in town, and Constance Abernathy, who is truly a good person and long time friend. They become embroiled in the drama and violence, especially Bryson, who is really a jerk. The narrative mainly follows Lucas but there are several other minor characters who are struggling, living on the fringes of society, and feel hopeless. They stand in sharp contrast to those who are greedy and corrupt.

A Place Called Hope features excellent writing in the descriptive, atmospheric, compelling, tension-packed, and complex novel. It is also peripherally a story of the downtrodden. It is not always an easy novel to read as most of the characters are deeply flawed and the despair, maltreatment, violence, and corruption seem to be readily turned to as the greed increases. As the plot unfolds, the tension, danger, and violence increase incrementally right up to the heart-pounding ending. Thanks to Canelo for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.

Oh my days, this book! As well as having a cracking story played out by some rather interesting characters, we also had quite a lot of emotion and heartache going on too. All in balance I hasten to add.
But I get ahead of myself... we start in a small American town called Hope, with 18 year old Lucas Caldwell who is pretty much responsible for looking after young brother Reuben as their mother is struggling with addiction. He really had to grow up quick and juggles all this with a job at a pet store, for money to feed them all, and also visiting his dying grandfather Lucky who lives in a nearby care facility. It is on one of his last visits that Lucky tells Lucas a story from his past, about a heist he was part of and, more importantly, where the bounty is still hidden. Lucky think that this, worth millions, could be the answer to his prayers, could be the means to get out of Hope... And so begins a convoluted and interconnected story that had me gripped from the off and pretty much on the edge of my seat all the way through as I followed Lucas as he tried to get to the prize without the other vultures, who started to circle once word got out, stealing it from under him.
There's definitely a lot going on in this book, I really did have to have my wits about me as I was reading. I also felt so much for Lucas, even with what he did quite early on. But he played the hand he was dealt. Sorry I am being oblique but I don't want to spoil things. He is flawed yes, but suffice to say he did it all for those he loved. We definitely have two factions in this book, the haves and have-nots and the dividing line between is vast. It's all a bit bleak in places but we always have an underlying feeling of hope bubbling under, and the knowledge, and indeed hope, that the good with prevail.
And... that ending. I was wondering how it would all pan out, and I was definitely not disappointed. What an absolutely perfect ending. Sublime...
I have now read two standalones by this author, this one and Savage Ridge. I really must crack on with his series...
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Morgan Greene's A Place Called Hope is a gripping story about family, desperation, and the allure of hidden treasure. I received a copy from Canelo via Netgalley.

Set in the small town of Hope, the novel follows Lucas Caldwell, a teenager burdened by his mother’s addiction and his sickly brother, Reuben. Struggling to escape his circumstances, Lucas learns from his dying grandfather, Lucky, that a stolen painting worth millions could be his ticket to a new life.

As Lucas contemplates the opportunity, the painting becomes both a symbol of hope and a dangerous curse. The pursuit of wealth attracts dangerous individuals, and the greed surrounding the painting threatens to tear apart both Lucas’s family and the town itself. The novel explores the moral complexity of Lucas’s choices, torn between his love for his family and the cost of protecting them.

With taut suspense, unexpected twists, and a deep dive into the destructive power of greed, Greene skillfully blends family drama with crime thriller elements. In short, I absolutely loved the entire, desperate, atmosphere and I would recommend it to everyone.

I was excited to dive into this book after reading Savage Ridge. One of my favorite parts was the inclusion of old letters being read by the main character to create the past timeline. It was the perfect backstory for the plot. This book has depth and emotional suspense - so much more than the average mystery/thriller. Excellent writing and character development and I was invested from start to finish. The explosive ending was insane!!!
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read this advanced copy. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Many thanks to netgalley, the author and Canelo for approving my request to read this book.

I was really keen to get stuck into this book after reading Savage Ridge and it's safe to say I was not disappointed.

A place called Hope has everything I love in a book, well written, superb plot and great characters, I felt myself forming a real emotional attachment to a few of them and as ever there's also one I love to hate.

This book had me hooked from the first chapter and I really enjoyed how it all unravelled leading up to the explosive finish-I'll definitely be recommending it!

Unputdownable, great characters, heart beating read!

As an avid fan of Jamie Johansson stories, i was really intrigued to see if Greene could bring the same energy and mystery to a different story.

And he did not disappoint. Loved this, didnt see the twist coming. Kept me wanting more, and still does at the end.

Another fabulous group of characters that you grow to love and ones you hate.

Fantastic!

I was impressed by the change of setting for this author whose previous books I've always enjoyed. The desolation of the town and the toll addiction and poverty have wrought on it were stark and powerfully conveyed. As always, the characters were well developed and memorable to make the reader feel invested in the outcome. Excellent work.
