OH MY ACHEY BREAKY HEART!!!!!!! Somebody I Used to Love written by Eve Ainsworth mentally destroyed me and left my heart shredded to pieces. I often wonder and question why I read these heart breaking books, but there's no better explanation than that I love them so much. This book was so freaking beautiful, yet it was so heart breaking at the same time. Eve Ainsworth put me in a choke hold, and just brutally attacked my heart like it was nothing fragile. I love going into a book completely blind, it just makes all of my emotions stronger, but at the same time mentally destroys me. I absolutely loved this book more than words can ever explain, no amount of words will ever do this book and the characters the justice that they deserve. THE SNOT BUBBLES WERE BUBBLING. I had so many emotions while reading this book, I bawled my eyes out, I smiled, I laughed, I was angry, I crumbled to the floor in a heaping pile of tissues. I will say that two days later my eyes were still puffy from crying like a little baby. For the amount of tears that I shed, Eve Ainsworth will be an author that I will go back to and read every single one of her books. I can't recommend this book enough, ladies if you LOVE to sob over fictional characters, pick up this book right now, or mark your calendars for June 27th, 2024.

THANK YOU TO NETGALLEY AND CANELO FOR AN ARC OF THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW!!!!!!

"👀👩‍👦Why can't you see him mum? He loved you too. You were like another mother to him......👀👩‍👦"

"💔I still love you, Gemma. You know that. Everything we have been through..... You know we are meant to be". "No", Gemma said, "I thought I knew, but I was wrong💔".

"😭💅Just like the domesticated little poodle I was, I found myself following her, a mess of snot, tears, and runny mascara😭💅".

"😭💔Without trust you have nothing, love will never be enough😭💔".

"🌷Forgetting doesn't make things go away, you know that as much as me. It just leaves a big hole in your life, an absence that feels wrong and unsettling. The only way you can move forward is by forgiving yourself🌷".

Gemma has declared that July 18th is officially the worst day of her life. July 18th, 1995 when Gemma was just five years old, her father died in a house fire, but Gemma and her mom made it out alive. After that day all throughout her life, Gemma has never forgiven her mother, when Gemma was younger she moved out of her mom's house to go live with her nan, but her mom would just wallow in self pity, she would constantly drink her life away and never stepped up to be a mom to Gemma. July 18th, 2022, Gemma's ex-boyfriend Will was in a horrific car accident, Will was in induced coma, suffered from a brain injury and many broken bones. After Will wakes up, he has lost three years of his memory, he doesn't remember getting engaged to Nicola, and he doesn't remember breaking up with Gemma. Gemma and Will were childhood sweethearts, but something catastrophic caused their relationship to break apart. During their time apart, Gemma meets a new man, Richard, they bonded over their love for the Beatles. Gemma and Richard are both teachers at the same school, but Richard will never be like Will, he might be super hot with blonde hair and blue eyes, but he will never love Gemma the same way Will loved her. Richard helped Gemma after her break up, he was tentative, sweet, and caring, but he will never measure up to Will.

When Will wakes up from his coma, he's looking and calling for Gemma, but doesn't remember them ever breaking up. Will literally doesn't remember anything, he doesn't remember the RiffRaff, the band Will and his brother Jack had started. I absolutely loved and adored Vee, Gemma's best friend, Vee was struggling with getting pregnant, but she was always there for Gemma, I absolutely adored their friendship so much, they will like two peas in a beautiful pod. When Gemma was a child, she has long vibrant red hair, and Will used to call her his strawberry bomb, ugh that was just the absolute cutest and swoon-worthy thing ever. By the end of the book, I absolutely hated Richard and Nicola for reasons I won't get into because you just need to read this book to find out what they did, but I will say my hate for both of them was so strong. The twists and turns in this book were absolutely wild, they just kept coming at me from all different directions and shredding my heart more and more everytime something happened. Somebody I Used to Love goes back and forth between the past and the present, but it's not confusing at all, it's super easy to follow along with. I wish nothing but the best for Nicola and Richard, but good riddance losers.

*QUOTES TO BE ADDED*

OMG..
FINALLY I WAS GOING TO DIE IF THEY HAD ANOTHER DRAME OR SMTH .... I really wanted to enjoy it but I just couldn't... I really struggled at the started , I was close to dnf it but I had already dnf a book this month so better not , anyways the story was lowkey good , like déjà vu but the writing was just 👎 my head couldn't wrap around it at all..

𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠

𝘞𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 : 2🌟
𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 : 3.5🌟
𝘖𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭 : 2.5🌟

Gem and Will had been together since they were kids – and have since split up and moved onto to new lives and partners when Will is involved in a serious car crash, and left with a brain injury. When he wakes, Will has little recollection of anything from the previous couple of years, including his new partner, his new job, and the first person he asks for – is Gem.

Gem, however is a bit broken. Yes, she’s in a new relationship with a fellow teacher, Richard, that fast-forwarded a bit due to lockdown happening, but she clearly isn’t over her breakup with Will and finds the whole situation really difficult to get her head around. The man she thought was her future before he obviously hurt her – badly – is awake and thinks that they are still a happy couple. To complicate matters, it’s obvious that she’s still has strong feelings with him, but it’s indicated that he’s responsible for their break-up.

So far, so good. Will is utterly confused. Gem is clearly struggling to be around him, his brother isn’t speaking to him (is in fact in another country), and no matter how hard Will tries to find out what happened to him before the accident and why everyone is acting so weird around him, no-one will tell him. Instead they all come up with excuses as to why they can’t tell him. The guy has a brain injury! Surely someone would tell him?
To me this plotline felt contrived to keep the anticipation building and pad out the book a bit – the whole ‘what did Will do?’ interested me at first, but by the time we finally find out, it wasn’t a surprise as we’d pretty much worked out what happened by then anyway. As I mentioned earlier, I really liked the premise I just felt that not telling us what happened to Will earlier made the story drag.
There were also a couple of other thinks that irked me – characters demonstrating unpleasant behaviours that seemed out of character – presumably to make sure that by the time we came to a particular point in the book, we’d have taken against them and be ok with them being ‘wronged’, and a couple of far fetched scenarios – but the latter is ok, it is fiction after all!

My favourite thing is when the title of the book is referred to and used in a story and this one delivered the line “somebody I used to love” quite a few times and it gave me all the feels each time!

The ending was actually quite sad, I really wanted a happy ending. However, life isn’t always happy endings! I would love to know what comes next for Gem and Will as I feel the ending didn’t really feel like an ending but more the end of a chapter.
Anyways not what is excepted , could have been better 🤷‍♀️

Somebody I used to love - Eve Ainsworth

After Will wakes up from a car accident, he cannot remember the last 3 years. The woman standing by his bed is not the love of his life and he doesn’t recognize the life he seems to be living. Will can't help himself and calls Gem, the girl he doesn’t remember losing but she has moved on. He almost destroyed her but Will knows he has woken up as the man that wouldn’t hurt her again.

I loved this book. We get the book from the POV of Gem and Will, past and present. Will and Gem break up when Will’s personality changes and he gets a job for more money and does something awful to his brother. Will doesn’t remember any of that. The best for me, was finding out why he changed in the first place…. It was a MIND BLOWING TWIST!!

I really enjoyed it. It started a bit bumpy… I wasn’t sure I was going to love it but I truly did. I loved the past with Will and Gem. Friends then lovers and they have that passionate love that I swoon over. It was a real head scratch trying to figure out why they were apart. GET IT! I’m not joking.

Potential trigger warning: (skip if you don't care) - If I wasn't reading this for NetGalley, I would have DNFed as soon as cheating occurred.

If you're looking for a book where the characters have substantial emotional trauma with a lack of communication, then Somebody I Used to Love is the book for you. In the author's note, Ainsworth mentioned that she wrote this book during a difficult time. The emotions several characters go through are so strong, it makes sense that some first-hard insight may have gone into it. I was drawn to this second-chance romance because I strongly relate to the premise. I had two main issues with this book:
1. Gem, the female protagonist, had few redeeming qualities. Throughout all the timelines, her dialogue focused around her struggles with addressing her trauma. I understood why she loved Will, but I had no idea what she was bringing to the table aside from a major woe-is-me complex.
2. The plot centered around an unrealistic premise. Would you forgive someone if they treated you like absolute garbage? The only way to resolve actions so hurtful and heinous would be to introduce an equally wild explanation that I assume is unrelatable to most readers. It seems that Ainsworth really knows how to write emotions, so why not anchor this story to address a more reasonable issue?

Thank you to NetGalley, Canelo, and the author, Eve Ainsworth, for providing me with an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

Happy publication day 🎉🥳

Oh my heart! This one hurt.

I went in a little blind to this, in that I requested it in NetGalley then promptly forgot what it was about. I’m glad I did, I got the full effect of the story that way.

Gem is moving on, she’s settled down with a new guy, he’s moved in, she’s forgetting the pain that Will caused when they broke up. Will has just come round after a terrible accident and has actually forgotten that they have broken up, he cannot fathom how he ended up with a completely different life from the one he shared with Gemma, and he certainly can’t figure out why everyone seems to have turned against him.

This had me in a complete chokehold, I genuinely had no idea what was coming next. I was so invested in the characters and really didn’t want the story to end. It was so very nearly a 5 star, I’d have just like a tiny bit more of an ending. I feel a bit bereft.

I’m inclined to want to add a content warning, but it’s a hugely personal one that may not actually apply to others; and it’d also be a pretty big spoiler…….

The narration was fantastic! Rose Riley and Will Kirk have done a beautiful job.

Huge thanks to Bolinda Audio via NetGalley for the opportunity to review this ELC.

This was incredible and I’m so happy about it I’m giving a 4 because the ending felt rushed and I would of love to of read more about Gemma and Will’s future but I can only imagine what it’s like for them… I was hooked I didn’t wanna put it down and I hate Nicola & Richard no matter what you go through that’s so wrong but this was such a great read and I’m happy with it I just wanted more of an ending

Since growing up together on the same council estate since kids - Gemma, Will and his brother Jack are inseparable. It is only a matter of time before feelings and relationships form..
In 2022, will wakes up from an induced coma with his fiancé by his side. Only problem is he does not know that person and why is she wearing his mother’s engagement ring?? Where is Gemma?? Will still believes he is living is 2019 👀

This was an easy read that I did enjoy therefore it would have been 3⭐️ However, I just felt that the last 80 pages were dragged out… so I got pretty bored come the end.

3.75

When I first started this one, I was hooked and enjoying the storyline. Then somewhere along the way it lost me. It all became a little ridiculous and the ending just left me feeling kinda, eh.
The narrators are great, so it was an enjoyable read. I just think the story went off the rails a bit too much.

This is the story of Will and Gem. After waking up from a car accident, Will realizes there is a 3 year gap in his memory. Gem, who has moved on and has a new boyfriend, receives a call about his situation. As Will starts his recovery process, he’s determined to prove to Gem that’s he’s the same man she fell in love with. However, Gem is torn between the man she was once in love with and her new life.
If you are a fan of a sweet, rip your heart out love story, then I recommend giving this book a read. I really enjoyed this book ❤️

Oh.My.Word!!
This book had my heart from the very first page and I have honestly felt every single emotion under the sun!
What a heartwrencher!

There was so, so much going on in this storyline that I don't even know where to begin.
I especially don't want to give any spoilers because at every turn, something would be explained or unearthed revealing another layer of the whole.

At its heart, this is a meant to be, second chance romance - but oh, it was so much more and I loved every single second of it.

The characters were so relatable and I felt so sorry for all of them at some point of the story.
Will, from the start, having had the accident that completely removed the last 3 years from his memory. That must have been so hard and confusing.
But also for Gem, who now had to re-live and explain the worst kind of break-up after only just feeling ready to move on.

I was rooting for them the whole way through, but was so intrigued to find out what it was that had made them break up in the first place if, having heard each past memory from both Gem and Will's pov, they were simply just made for each other.

The whole situation had me also really caring for the rest of the character cast too. Each one with their own issues and complexities, I think they were the ones who evolved the most through the book.
Each past memory pieces together the whole for both Will and us reading along - and at every step the revelations totally shocked me.

I honestly didn't see any of what happened coming and each interference and that ending actually had me having to take 5 minutes to recover!

This was so beautifully written that I was engrossed for every second and I'm so glad I had this on audiobook so that I didn't need to stop reading until the end as I'd never have been able to put this down!

I've not read this author before but I will most certainly be checking out any more work to add to my wishlist - this book will stay with me for a very long time and I'm really really hoping that we might see the characters popping up in a sequel? I couldn't bear to leave that ending up to my own imagination!!

What a book!
This was so sweet, and yet so heartbreaking too!

Gemma (Gem) and Will had been sweethearts forever….
And then, things changed!
Gem really has no idea why… but, they split up. She was destroyed. He moved on…and eventually, so did she.

When Will wakes up in the hospital, and there’s a strange girl holding his hand, he’s wondering what the heck is going on?
As the docs check him out, they realize that Will has LOST three years of his life…and is back in time when he and Gem were still together.

So, when Will’s brother Jack calls her and asks her to go see him, (he’s currently out of the country) she has no choice but to say ‘ok’. After all, they’ve all been friends since childhood. And Gem’s mother was like a second mother to them too.

And that’s when the book really takes off!

Such sweet moments and memories. And then such heartbreaking scenes as well…as the memories start to come back to Will…

Lovely book that brings out so many “feels” !!
I’m really hoping that there will be a book #2. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!!

Thanks to #NetGalley and #BolindaAudio for an ARC of the audiobook which is *** due to be released in a few days on 9/1/24. ***

This story masterfully weaves the amnesia trope into a gripping narrative that hooks you from the very beginning. The protagonist, who has lost several years of their memory, is plunged into a world where they must piece together the fragments of their forgotten past. This setup creates an immediate sense of intrigue, as the reader is pulled into the mystery alongside the main character.

What makes this story particularly compelling is the emotional depth tied to the character’s lingering feelings for their ex. Even without memories of the past years, the protagonist’s unresolved emotions create a powerful tension that adds layers to the mystery. As the story progresses, each new piece of the puzzle raises the stakes, keeping you eager to discover what happened and what will happen next.

The narrative pacing is excellent, with just the right balance between uncovering past events and dealing with the present. The suspense is maintained throughout, making you question every character’s motives and every detail of the protagonist’s life. This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a blend of mystery, romance, and psychological drama.

When Gem hears her ex boyfriend has been in a car accident, she reluctantly goes to see him, for his brother Jack. When she arrives at the hospital, she discovers Will has lost his memory and cannot remember the last 3 years. He thinks they’re still together. He has no clue, who the woman claiming to be his fiancé is and just wants Gem back.

Gem is thrown into turmoil, she has always loved Will and was devastated when they split up. She’s spent 3nyears putting her life back together and is happy with her new partner. Or is she?
In the story we flit between Gem and Wills stories, from what Will last remembers, to Gem's memories of the same period and life as it is now.

This was beautifully read by both narrators and I really enjoyed listening to it. In the end I was rooting for both Gem and Will and hope things turn out for them in the future

Book number 100 for 2024 - glad I finished on a book I enjoyed. Overall, this was a little unbelievable and at about 75% I started to get annoyed with all the constant meddling, it felt like it was starting to get drawn out a bit too much. But I enjoyed the read, it was easy and light hearted with enough substance and drama to keep you guessing. Ending was a tad frustrating but I also got it and also liked that everything wasn’t wrapped up too perfectly like other romance books.

This book started off really well, I was intrigued to find out the real truth about will, will was in a car crash and lost his memory of 3 years, he woke up 3 years behind, still thinking he had his old, job, friends and girlfriend- but he didn’t!
He had a new life, a new girlfriend , different job etc The ending wasn’t what I thought either which is good but quite a bland ending for me!

3.5⭐ I really enjoyed this story. It was more like a novel/mystery than romance. I was hooked, wanting to know what really happened to Will after his accident. I enjoyed the writing style and I was satisfied with the ending and how the truth was all revealed in the end. It didn't feel cheesy or overdramatic, but realistic and rational.

Thank you Netgalley for an arc copy, all opinions are my own.

I struggled to finish this book. Too many points of view, a ridiculous plot and characters I couldn't get on with. The writing style was also poor, with lots of mistakes and uncomfortable sentence structure. A pity, because it was quite promising to start.

Will and Gem had grown up together and had become a couple only to split in 2019.

In 2022 Will was involved in a car accident. When he awoke he thought it was 2019 and that him and Gem were still together. Both however had moved on and were in new relationships.

Would Will get his old memory back and with it Gem, or had too much water flowed under the bridge and that ship having long sailed???

More like a 3.5. I enjoyed reading this from the POV that it was a nice easy read, but the story wasn't that plausible, although it was certainly predictable. I didn't feel there was a great deal of depth to the characters, and I felt that the story was far too drawn out, bordering on tedious at times.

When I picked up this book, I felt a rush of excitement because, for once, the "victim" who awakens from a coma with lost memories is a male character. This fresh twist on a familiar trope not only intrigued me but also set the stage for an engaging narrative. As I delved into the story, I found it to be a delightful experience, particularly because the roles were reversed; while the central figure recovering from their past is a man, the protagonist guiding the journey is a strong, complex female character. This dynamic added depth to the storyline, even if it was somewhat predictable.

The unexpected twists in the plot greatly enhanced my reading experience. Each revealed secret kept me eager to turn the pages, deepening the mystery and revealing more about the characters. I enjoyed piecing together the clues they were pursuing. The ending was satisfying, with the author skillfully tying up loose ends in a surprising yet logical way, providing a sense of closure often lacking in thrillers.

Overall, this novel is an outstanding and captivating read that consistently keeps the reader on their toes. I found myself completely absorbed, and I can confidently say it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I would highly recommend it to my fellow enthusiasts of the thriller genre. The writing style makes it accessible, light, and fast-paced, making it perfect for anyone looking for a gripping story that doesn't feel heavy.
