Lieutenant David Brent and his crew are waiting on a torpedo boat fast, agile and terribly vulnerable.
They are the sole members of a Commando raiding party, poised to charge ashore on a carefully orchestrated rescue mission. Little do they know that Hell is about to break loose
The near-suicidal mission has been ordered at the very highest level of government. Now, engines idling, alert for the tell-tale sounds of patrolling E-boats, they can only pray to come out of this alive
A nerve-shredding war thriller that crackles with intensity, perfect for fans of Anthony Trew, Douglas Reeman and Philip McCutchan.
Alan Evans was born in 1930 in Sunderland. He is an enthralling writer of First and Second World War adventure thrillers, mainly based on naval battles. Carefully researched, and with his own experience of active service, he skilfully evokes the tension and terror of war. Many of the figures and events are based on real-life models. His best-known character is Commander David Cochrane Smith, a maverick First World War sea captain. The protagonist of six of Evans' novels, he has to battle against the highly sceptical Admiralty as well as seemingly impossible odds in order to triumph. Evans' style is pacey and gripping, and in addition to his popular books for adults, he counts three adventure novels for children amongst his credits.
Author Evans has produced a fine, action packed story into Night Action. It's a vivid page turner I didn't want to put down. The action sequences were suspenseful yet easy to follow. It wasn't difficult to keep track of the cast of characters either.
I couldn't say for certain how accurate the historical details in Night Action were, but there certainly weren't any egregious errors to note either. I did rather appreciate how, as the mission unfolded, the potential risks of the courses of action chosen by the protagonists were acknowledged even as they were being adopted.
I didn't particularly care for the old romance aspect of the story, but it was nonetheless an integral part of the story, so I can't in fairness rant about it, even if I do generally prefer my war stories to be romance free.
Still, that minor annoyance aside, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading Alan Evans's book Night Action and give it a 5 star rating with no hesitation. I strongly recommend this book to anyone in search of an exciting naval story.
Exciting action with a good mix of interesting characters. Action on land and in water. Realistic descriptions of battles. One point to quibble about and that is all the British commandos had Thompson submachine guns. In reality some would have Thompsons, but Sten submachine guns would have been common. Good book
I really enjoyed this tale of naval warfare with a twist as the main action 5akes place on land, in occupied France. It's a real page turner and I found myself reading into the wee hours, engrossed in the story, wanting to know what would happen next. I can wholeheartedly recommend this for lovers of naval war stories.
Good action packed story. Character development difficult because there were so many characters. The geographic layout of where the story takes place was impossible to understand and very difficult to describe for the author. Still a worthwhile read.
5 stars for a rattling good yarn! To have set off on clandestine mission to extract one man from enemy territory, only to have it go wrong and still complete the mission whilst rescuing children to boot, AND escape whilst sinking E boats too....magic
Very well written about MTB’s in WWII. Very gripping and believable story taking place so sea and in coastal France. Characters are well drawn out, both British and German. It’s like taking a trip back in time.
A totally believable war time escapade. Well written and nail biting story.True to life characters and a plot which keeps the reader's attention from start to finish.
As many trained in the military know, "accomplishing the mission" is always the number one duty. This book gives us great and realistic characters forced into a situation with the mission as the goal but people as the story. Great book!
A navel officer and an army officer with so.e history set out to execute a daring raid in France. The plan comes apart at multiple points but the officers adjust and execute.
I like reading about WWII and especially about ordinary men and women who rise to the occasion. Who can quickly assess a situation and change plans. A map would have been very useful as the action in the last third was happening in many places around the town.
The strands of the protagonists stories interweave to produce a gripping read. Although short at a little over 222 pages it holds the reader throughout. Another good Story from the Alan Evans library.
The story line more that read the book in many places. It got so convoluted in some places that I despaired of really understanding what I was reading. But in the end I did finish. All in all it was good and I'm glad I stu k with it.
