In the Company of Wolves

Rate this book
The shooter carried a pistol built for one purpose. The victim fell exactly as planned.

There’s no trail to follow, no video to watch, no evidence to chase. Just a gun without markings and a Sheriff’s Office that can’t, or won’t, connect the dots.

Detective Joe Court’s world is in flux, but the work never changes. With her dog at her side and a notepad full of questions no one else will ask, Joe sprints to separate the truth from the lies.

But the deeper Joe digs, the less the crime looks like chaos and the more it starts to look like choreography.

Someone’s hiding in the dark, pulling every string.

And Joe is next on their list.

Razor-sharp and crackling with authenticity, In the Company of Wolves drops you into a county where the rules are changing in real time, and the only constant is a detective who refuses to quit. This is Chris Culver at his best.

Chris Culver is the New York Times bestselling author of the Ash Rashid series of mysteries. After graduate school, Chris taught courses in ethics and comparative religion at a small liberal arts university in southern Arkansas. While there and when he really should have been grading exams, he wrote The Abbey, which spent sixteen weeks on the New York Times bestseller's list and introduced the world to Detective Ash Rashid.

Chris has been a storyteller since he was a kid, but he decided to write crime fiction after picking up a dog-eared, coffee-stained paperback copy of Mickey Spillane's I, the Jury in a library book sale. Many years later, his wife, despite considerable effort, still can't stop him from bringing more orphan books home. The two of them, along with a labrador retriever named Roy, reside near St. Louis where Chris is hard at work on his next novel.

great Story

In the Company of Wolves is a gripping, atmospheric read that pulls you in early and doesn’t let go. Chris Culver crafts a story that blends tension, emotion, and sharp storytelling with a steady confidence that shows on every page. The pacing is strong, the characters feel grounded and believable, and the world Culver builds has just the right balance of grit and depth to keep things compelling without bogging the reader down.

What really stands out is the tone—dark without being overwhelming, thoughtful without slowing the story. Culver does an excellent job exploring loyalty, survival, and the complicated nature of human (and wolf-like) instincts, all while keeping the narrative engaging and accessible. The writing is clean and purposeful; nothing feels wasted.

This is the kind of book that stays with you after you’ve finished it—the themes linger, and you find yourself thinking back on key moments and characters. If you enjoy stories that are immersive, character-driven, and a little sharp around the edges, In the Company of Wolves is well worth your time. A strong, memorable read that proves Chris Culver knows exactly what he’s doing.

Every book is better than the one before it!

I just can’t get enough of the Joe Court series! I hope the break from more Joe Court books is a brief one, although I’d love some more in the Homer Watson series! Keep writing; reading is my escape from life’s day to day stresses!

Another Joe Court masterpiece by Chris Culver

The only thing I dislike about the Joe Court series is that each book has to come to an end. I've read all 13 and loved them all. I highly recommend this series.

I have no idea how Chris pulled together a dissociated group of murders, beatings, drug overdoses and illegal firearms to solve the crimes of St. Augustine, MO. Especially with a new police force devoted to her downfall, finding answers seemed impossible. Well done, Chris Culver!
