Odd One Out

Rate this book
Samantha’s life has always been mind numbingly boring, with a half-brother that can’t hold down a job to save his life, a mom who’s declared war on a fellow homeschooling mom that’s snubbed her, and a dad who just wants to be left out of the drama.

When her thirteenth-birthday-wish is for something exciting to happen, she never expected it to come true.

What starts out as an average day hanging out with her best friend takes a turn when a mysterious stranger grabs her and gives her a cryptic message.

She doesn’t give it another thought, until she sees the mystery man on the news, murdered less than a block from where she’d seen him.

Sammy never expected her life to turn into some sort of spy movie.

Yet, whether she likes it or not, her life has just been turned upside down, and things may never be the same again.

P.D. Atkerson is a homeschooled writer, living in Montana, who may or may not be a secret agent. She spends almost as much time in the worlds she creates as she does the real one.
When she’s not reporting the stories of her agents, she’s learning different languages, or traveling to different worlds through the portals of books.
She has a black belt in sarcasm and a master’s degree in useless facts.

Love. Just love. So, so, so much!

Okay, I have to confess, I came to this book from an entirely different place than pretty much anyone else will, having known the spoilers from the time the book was in its planning stages. Hey, being a writing buddy and entirely incompetent brainstorming partner has privileges, okay? ;)

All that to say, you may not see it going in, but this book is brilliant. And when you figure out who the characters are and how they connect to the SLU, you'll see why. Because they are connected. And it's INCREDIBLE. Also, keep in mind that you're getting your information through Sammy's eyes, and there are notions she's yet to have corrected. But if you don't get it at first, I guarantee you will want to go back and read the whole thing over once you figure it out because the inside jokes and easter eggs had me absolutely rolling! Also, this book should not be your introduction to the SLU. Go read some of the others first. That's an order. Do it. You'll enjoy this one so much more with that context, even if you still have to put some of the pieces together to catch what isn't explicitly spelled out in this one. (And by the time you get back here, you should be entirely used to thinking of characters under different names and aliases. XD)

I don't know how much more I can say without spilling spoilers everywhere, but the characters are brilliant, the relationships are perfect, and the viewpoint through Sammy's eyes as she slowly begins to realize there's a whole lot more going on behind the scenes of her "perfectly normal" family than she ever expected is exquisite. Once you make the connections, it's an incredible peek into the future for any SLU fan. (Also, I happen to know what's coming next, and I cannot wait!) Suffice it to say that spending a good chunk of Saturday sitting and reading because I couldn't put the book down was not in my plans, but I should have penciled it in when release day was announced because there was no way I could not.

Read it, figure out the connections, reread it, and then tell me your mind isn't blown again and again. I hope you find it as amazing as I did! :D

5 stars. The first two chapters of this book baffled me so much I checked out the reviews. Angie made light break for me, so I came back with a suspicion of who the MCs are, and y'all, this is so fun. Even if I felt like an idiot because I got 0% of the Easter eggs and am still unsure who Jay is (I have a pretty good idea but... really??? I want PROOF/confirmation as to who everyone is, especially the mother). Don't read this until you've read the Simon Lee books, and then enjoy the humour and mayhem. 😉

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*

Make way for one of my favorite books in the SLU.

This book, like Sam, may seem unassuming, but there are quite a few surprises packed inside...

Jay and Riley were hilarious. And Nathan! And Cookie! There were so many great characters in this story. XD Sam was spot-on snarky and sweet. Watching her navigate the sudden shadow world she was thrown into was super fun, and I cheered SO hard at a few certain scenes...

The plot was short and fast-paced, but with some great scenes to breathe (and die laughing), and amazing character moments.

And the endddinngg....

CW: Spies...fighting...guns...wounds...all that stuff.
