Perfect In Every Way

Rate this book
Historical fiction writer, Vivienne Dupree, is hoping to unravel the mystery of her WWII soldier, great-grandfather’s doomed love affair with the lovely Lady Harmony. A woman he met convalescing at the sweeping English country estate, The Downs.

Vivienne jumps at the invitation to spend time at this magnificent property, doing so with unfettered access to family papers.

What she doesn’t expect is to come face-to-face—and immediately go head-to-head—with Battle Talyn, the ludicrously handsome, imposing, ridiculously arrogant Duke of Burleigh.

From the start, Vivi and Battle match wits, but it doesn’t take long for Vivi to realize something is amiss at The Downs. She dives into her research to figure it out, at the same time Battle launches a campaign that Vivi doesn’t quite understand.

The game is on, and a mystery is afoot.

What kept the doomed lovers apart all those years ago? What’s happening in the ballroom? Is there a curse on The Downs?

And what does all of this have to do with Battle and Vivi?

Kristen Ashley

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

3.5 Stars…..although the last 25% of the book was 5 stars!!

I enjoyed the characters (most of all the hero's three sisters who were great!), the storyline was good but it seemed that the reason for Vivi’s trip to The Downs was kind of on the back burner as the romance develops between the H&h Battle & Vivi. All I all a good read that wrapped up nicely and as always we get a great satisfying epilogue.

* Excellent narration 🎧 by Stella Bloom as always.

Y'all sometimes the only happy you need is a new Kristen Ashley release. This latest installment in the Manors and Mysteries series—yes, you heard me, English manors and a compelling mystery!—was no exception.

Vivienne Dupree is an author on a mission: she's come to England to write her next novel. It's based loosely on the enduring mystery of her WWII veteran great-grandfather and his doomed love affair with a British member of the upper class, and Vivi's received exclusive access to the manor house where it all happened.

One of the manor's current residents is Vivi's pen-pal, Prudence (Prue) Talyn, who struck up a friendship with Vivi as they collaborated on the material and research for Vivi's writing project. Vivi's excited to spend time with her friend, meet Prue's family, and get to the bottom of her mystery.

But something stands in the way of her success: Battle Talyn, the Duke of Burleigh.

Battle doesn't want his family's secrets dragged through the public eye in the form of a lurid romance novel.

But he hasn't encountered Vivi's American stubborn will.

As the two "battle" their moral lines, they discover a dangerous chemistry that compels them both.

Add in some classic KA shenanigans such as some family antics, some dramatic friends, and a love story that spans every page (and decade).... Yeah. This was a good time.

Perfect in Every Way was just like its title. It hit the spot, and it was that—near-perfect in every way. (I say "near" perfect because... I must admit... I love a drama. I love a romantic angst. And Battle and Vivi?? They were a little too wholesome and emotionally stable for me. Yes, I know that reflects poorly on me. Oops.)

Battle and Vivi's love affair was the core of this story. Their heart, sense of family, and immediate chemistry worked for me on many levels. I enjoyed seeing them dance together and find their happily ever after.

Ugh, nobody writes an HEA like Kristen Ashley. Don't miss this one! It's a great entry point into the KA universe and a great standalone story.

Thank you to the author for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

Series: Book 2, Manors and Mysteries
Release date: 02-17-26
Narrated by Stella Bloom. Length: 10 hrs and 40 mins

This story has very high rating, so I hoped for a really good story. It was okay but not something special. It was cute the way the hero Battle fell for the heroine and made his attraction clear. I liked the way the cats followed Vivienne around and how well Vivienne got on with Battle´ s sisters, but I was distracted by the hero´s name, by the overuse of f-bombs and c*nt. Who uses this kind of language in front of women, especially when you are a duke, should have good upbringing and class?

It seems whenever I decide to give KA another chance, I’m mostly filled with regret. A few of her newer releases are somewhat reminiscent of her classics but sadly, most fall short. Way short. Unfortunately, reading “Perfect in Every Way” was a colossal waste of time. It’s been a while since I’ve had the displeasure of reading a story so poorly written and boring - and this one tops my list of sucky books.

From annoying endless outfit and room descriptions coupled with constant designer name-dropping, to her preachy lectures, this book is a snoozer.

Not great storytelling when the MMC proclaims how much her wants to f@ck the MFC in front of his sisters. Ugh. Their “sexy” back and forth banter felt forced and corny. Between Battle’s constant “purring” and Vivi’s swooning and fainting over his good looks, this story overall gave me the icks. This couple completely lacked chemistry.

Gone are the days of enjoyable heartfelt emotional romances, filled with lovable and memorable characters. In its place are the author’s nonsensical rantings embedded in a boring storyline. Stop professing “girl power” and feminism while scripting weak, whiny, and unnecessarily argumentative heroines.

What a great disappointment.

Sigh.
Readers of Ka know her partly for her long descriptions, outfits, decor and food this one is no different.
The heroine is a historical/fiction writer so we have details of her take on history of certain things and tbh at times it gets a bit preachy of her views on men/women roles etc.
We have huge descriptions of her outfits, drinks and as the Hero is a duke, the house he lives in, room by room. Pages and pages and pages...
I ended up skipping loads.
The story is part of the mystery series and I do find when KA writes about an extra plot the H/h relationship can get a bit lost in that, they feel an instant attraction so its as if enough said.
The second half was better, more plot, more relationship development.
We have other woman drama which i usually like but honestly discussing or eviscerating her on her skills in bed in front of friends and his siblings, younger sisters, who he objects to hearing any details of their relationships was in really bad taste. He does say later it was wrong to have done it and the other woman is evil but still....

It is an american in Britain so we have her take on British stuff which having half a cider and a flat above Boots in town resonated but other stuff....
At the end we hear how the heroine spends her million pounds it just feels so out of touch when some are struggling to pay bills and feed the family. I appreciate reading is escapism but it feels so out of touch and shallow.

The series has supernatural/paranormal echoes but I did like the way KA sort of implies it could be extra stuff or just her vivid imagination.

HEA.

A Perfect Read from an Author Who Always Leaves Me Wanting More

Kristen Ashley has this uncanny ability to pull me straight into a story and make me feel every beat of it, and Perfect in Every Way is no exception. From the first chapter, I was completely absorbed, wrapped up in the emotion, the tension, and the beautifully layered characters she’s so well known for.

What I loved most is how effortlessly the story balances heart, heat, and hope. The characters feel lived‑in and real, the kind of people you root for without even realizing it. Every moment feels intentional, every reveal lands exactly where it should, and by the time I reached the end, I wasn’t ready to let go.

This is an author who always leaves me wanting more, and this book reminded me exactly why. It’s romantic, heartfelt, and deeply satisfying in that signature Kristen Ashley way.

A gorgeous read from start to finish.

I remember enjoying the first book in this series, this one not so much. The overly long (read usual) KA descriptive prose along with her getting lost as to the reason Vivienne was actually at The Downs let this one down. And don't EVEN get me started on why TF the author would actually give the alpha male hero the nickname of Battie. I just can't with that one, really 🤦‍♀️🙄

First things first

If you're going to give a warning at the beginning of the book.... give a proper one. This book deals with sensitive content or whatever bs was said was a shit copout like how hard is it to say what the topics are? Y'all annoy me 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Anyway if you're like me and need to know what you're getting into before you trip over a trigger...... this book deals with sexual assault and bullying. Be kind to yourself, the world is hard enough already.

Onwards

If this series is your intro to KA I'd suggest putting it down and trying another of her books. While this was infinitely better than book 1 I can see this series boring someone enough to make them swear off an author for life 😂😂😂😂.

Another book with an English Duke and American h pairing. This time we have Battle Talyn our H 👀😑 and Vivienne Dupree an American author who's found letters from her great grandfather about his once great love.
To be honest this wasn't half bad, I skimmed a couple places, I definitely could've done without the scene where Battle had to speak to his ex in that manner in front of his sisters (by the way this scene is typical of KA and I can't for the life of me figure out if she thinks that makes the man attractive? A man speaking to any woman like that is just gross and disgusting but especially speaking of their past sex life in front of his sisters 🤦🏽‍♀️🤔🤦🏽‍♀️) and of course the descriptions were a little overboard but compared to the snoozefest that was book 1 I enjoy this one much more. It licked up a bit in that last maybe 35% and I enjoyed seeing all the sisters get their own HEA. I'll continue with this series

*******
No cheating
ow drama from his ex who was hoping not to be an ex 🙄 he wasn't interested tho
one of the secondary characters was raped previously
one of the secondary characters was bullied
we see these ladies, the effect these incidents had on their lives and their efforts to overcome.
I'd have liked to see Chassie get some counselling tho
Parental neglect

I started my reading addiction journey many, many years ago when I stoles my mom’s Johanna Lindsey books and fell in love with her historical romances based in England. I’m fascinated with castles and what life would be like being part of the English Ton. I think Bridgerton lovers can understand this. Ironically, I found out years later that my mom’s side of the family are descendants from the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and my fascination only grew. I’ve never been to England but it’s on my bucket list to visit the current Edgecumbe castle someday. I think this explains why I loved this book. I got to read through Vivienne’s eyes what it would be like to visit a castle. How she falls in love with not only the current title holder but his three sisters as well. And then, to see it all play out where Vivienne gets to live the dream of creating the next heir and growing old with Battle (yes, the heroes name is Battle) in this castle filling it with love and children. Sigh. How can I not love it?

As ludicrous as it seemed, from the moment I walked into this house, it claimed me. And from the moment I laid eyes on this man, he did.

In a rapidly changing world, there is one constant that continues to provide this reader with refuge and much needed escapism, and that constant is Kristen Ashley’s inimitable brand of storytelling. As one of the most versatile Romance writers of today, Ashley’s extensive catalogue stretches across several subgenres and tropes, but all her stories have one thing in common—emotional depth and rich character development—and her latest novel is a perfect testament to that. The quiet, restrained beauty of the English countryside offers an idyllic setting to a poignant tale of love, friendship, and mystery, that is only intensified by a touch of the supernatural. When it comes to delivering stories that take over your entire life while reading them, then settling deep into the fabric of your soul, Kristen Ashley reigns supreme.

Solid 3 stars.

Huh. I've enjoyed two Kristen Ashley books in a row. That hasn't happened since... maybe The Promise came out and I realized that I'd binged on too much of (what was then) a good thing.

I definitely preferred the first book, Too Good to Be True, but this was a cute follow-up. Vivienne, a moderately successful author, comes to an English estate to research the shared history of her family and theirs, falls in love with the family, the home, the animals, and the Duke. There's a bit of paranormal shenanigans, but definitely nothing that feels high tension. Vivi and Battle, the Duke, are both seriously into each other from the beginning. His sisters adore her. As all KA heroines do, Vivi effortlessly comes in and starts to heal the wounds life has left on the inhabitants of the home. Nothing ground-breaking here, and very low-stakes. All in all, not a bad book at all, but probably not one I'd revisit, at least not any time soon.

I did find myself wondering: who hurt you KA, and why was her name Chelsea? We got our second wannabe-OW in a row named Chelsea in this book, and I want to know what some RL Chelsea did. I even looked at the first book to make sure the same Chelsea wasn't making the rounds through London, sleeping with the peerage and, nope, different last name, different parents. KA just really likes humiliating women named Chelsea.

Perfect In Every Way is a banter filled contemporary romance with a heartfelt focus on the love of family.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy. Thank you to the author and her team. All opinions are my own and given freely.

Vivienne is a historical fiction author who has travelled to a British country estate to research the love affair that occurred there years ago between her great-grandfather and friend Prue Talyn's great aunt for a new book. She will stay at The Downs, the Talyn's ancestral home. Not much is known about the family, but she's about to meet them and learn more than she expected. Coming head to head with Battle, The Duke of Burleigh.

It took me a minute to settle into this one as the scene was set. But once I settled in, I was hooked on three things. Firstly, the romance blooming between Viv and Battle. It was so delicious, the banter and chemistry. The sizzling tension that eventually ignites very nicely. Battle has some alpha in him, and he's not use to being challenged like Viv challenges him, and I ATE IT UP. The mouth on him! All the darling's! FIRE & SWOON. Secondly, I was so immersed in the researching of the past. In the mystery of that love story, as well and the secrets uncovered. It brought a bit of a paranormal/magical element that captured my attention. And lastly, the beautiful way this whole family blossoms not only together but individually as well. It was so heartfelt. Made me feel all the feels. I really enjoyed my time with this one!

This is book two in the Manor's and Mysteries series, but it could easily be read as a standalone. There are sensitive topics that could be triggering for some so do seek out TW's if needed.

I loved this story! Like the first book in this series, I was drawn into it right away. The history of the Talyn family and The Downs estate was so intriguing. I enjoyed Vivienne’s career and what brought her there. Her friendship with Prue was so sweet, and she quickly formed bonds with the other Talyn sisters, Tempe and Chassie. It was clear that she was meant to be there and a part of their family. The mystery that Vivi was trying to uncover was fascinating, and I loved the magical elements that surrounded her. Her attraction and connection to Battle was undeniable from the moment she saw him and fainted. Battie was the most amazing brother and man. I adore everything about him and his devotion to the girls and Vivi. This story was fabulous.

I was so so in the first book in this series, but this one charmed me from the start. It felt like Vivienne's arrival breathed new life into everyone at the house. She was able to get them all to see things in a different light, so reach for things that they hadn't dared for and take steps to get them. It was fun to see the siblings meddle a bit to make sure the others got what they wanted and to be happy.

I really liked how the romance in the past was woven in and how they found out what really happened. It's sad what they discovered, but I think what they did with that proof was perfect.

usually kristen ashley made her characters already doing smex in the first 20% so color me surprised when the main couple in this one get together in the 50% of the book. well eventho it's still less than a week in the book... I'll still take it.

n e waysssss, i love the noble/commoner trope in this one especially i just watched perfect crown and it's soooo perfect. KA making this kind of plot again isn't in my bingo card but I actually like it bc i love her other paranormal romance series.

also a question tho. they talked about having kids, their names etc but in the epilogue it wasn't mentioned at all. instead, it was all about the other couples with their babies 🤔🤔

I loved how easy and smooth this story played out! There was intrigue, a smidge of the mystical, secrets to uncover, and the past to unravel. There is family drama, family caring, family protection, and family love. There are several kitties, a lazy large pup, and devoted employees. There is a large, historical, seeped with history, family estate, and duchy to go along with it. There is attraction, heat, steam, and love. There is a uniqueness to each and every character, and they compliment each other in ways that fit perfectly. This was, not to be corny or anything, perfect in every way <3

Solid 4/5 from me. Sometimes a KA novel reads the same as others, but this one had intrigue that I was happy wasn't just duplicated from the other book in this series. I liked the nod to that book as well - it came off as subtle and not obnoxious. Quick read, definitely went to look at KA's inspo pictures for the family.

Fluffy fun reading; but this is waaaaaaay shallow in comparison to previous book 'Too good to be true'. Both MCs here act much younger, more callow, and are less interesting than Ian and Daphne. YMMV.

I appreciated the escapism here--which was fun, and needed in contrast to the darkness IRL right now, but its unlikely this book will be one I'll re-read. There wasn't much depth here. It's all wish fulfillment, Cinderella dreams. Yes, bad things happen, but they are mostly off the page/already in the past, so the angst is not there and neither is catharsis. It feels like Barbie and Ken in castle with the relatives to me.

P.P.S. There should be a trigger-warning for recovering alcoholics along with the others provided plentifully. Lots of alcohol consumption. So here you go--from me to you. Tag! You've been warned.

Value added rec:
On a separate note, I had fun googling around KA's references as per usual, and ended up by hitting up Wikipedia to find out how many dukes there are currently in the UK (30), and their relative ages (and looks, if photos were linked). If you haven't already come across them, the 2024 photos of the Duke of Westminster's wedding are gorgeous! KA fans and fashion junkies like me should enjoy. Maybe that wedding was a influence to this?....

Another beautiful read from Kristen Ashley!

Vivienne is visiting The Downs for research on a new book. But she is immediately swooped up by this amazing family and finds a new home. This story was so sweet and full of heartfelt family moments. Battle was so protective of the women in his life and I was here for every second of it! The instant chemistry between him and Vivienne was so delicious and I adored their banter. The closeness Vivienne developed between herself and the sisters was so much fun, I loved the adventures they got up to.

This one is full of mystery, some paranormal moments, lots of laughter and love, and some heartbreaking moments. You will definitely want to look into triggers for this story. While they don't go in to big detail, I could see some topics causing high emotions for some. This is the second book in the Manors and Mysteries series. In my opinion you don't need to read the first one for this to make sense. I think this one is a definite read if you enjoy romantic suspense stories!

Thank you Kristen Ashley and team for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!

Perfect in Every Way Kristen Ashley
Perfect In Every Way (Manors and Mysteries Book 2) by Kristen Ashley
Narrated by Stella Bloom
I received an arc of this book, but I had no obligation to review it. This post contains affiliate links

Kristen Ashley has been my favorite author for about 15 years now, and I absolutely love her writing style. There is something about the way her writing affects me that makes her books easy to reread and perfect for pulling me out of a slump. That being said, a few of her series just haven’t been for me. The Ghosts and Reincarnation series took place in five different manors in the English countryside, and the setting and descriptions didn’t really do it for me. I’m finding the same issue with the Manors and Mysteries series.

Kristen is known for her long and detailed descriptions, and usually I like them. But because the house is such a large part of this story, the descriptions felt even more detailed, and honestly, I was bored. There may be a couple of reasons for that. I received an e-book ARC, and I mostly listen to books now. Usually, Kristen Ashley is an author I prefer to read, but I think I’ve been struggling to concentrate on all ebooks lately. When I finally got the audiobook for Perfect In Every Way , the story felt better. I'm just not quite sure if it actually improved or if the audio format made the difference.

Vivienne Dupree is a historical fiction writer working on a novel based on her great-grandfather, a WWII soldier, and his affair with Lady Harmony, who lived in an English manor called The Downs. While researching, Vivienne becomes friendly with the current residents—Prue, Chassie, and Tempie—and is invited to stay there to continue her work and research. What she doesn’t expect is their handsome and bossy Duke of a brother, Battle Talyn. Unfortunately, the name ruined him for me, especially when they called him Battie.

The four siblings live together at The Downs. They’re all single, very close, and share the house with lots of cats. One sister hasn’t even left the grounds in years. It feels like there’s going to be some kind of paranormal element, but it only hints at it and never really develops. What does happen is Vivienne and Battle hit it off immediately, and I loved their banter.

The story follows Vivienne trying to piece together what happened 80 years ago, and searching for missing letters between her great-grandfather and Lady Harmony. It read more like historical fiction to me, and sadly, it just didn’t keep my interest. The current-day storylines of the siblings and their almost non-existent love lives worked for me, but the historical mystery never fully pulled me in, even though it makes up a large part of the book.

Kristen’s writing is still something I love, especially her romance and dialogue, but Perfect In Every Way wasn’t for me for the most part. There were moments where that classic Kristen Ashley style really shined, but much of the first half felt slow, and I found myself getting bored. I had a similar experience with the first book in the series, Too Good to Be True, so I’m thinking this just isn’t the series for me. I didn’t love it, I didn’t hate it, and that’s okay. It doesn’t make Kristen Ashley any less of a favorite for me.

A note on narration: I started listening at about 65%. Stella Bloom narrates, and to me, she is a Kristen Ashley heroine through and through since she narrates so many of her books. Hearing her voice gave it that familiar Kristen Ashley feel and instantly picked up the book for me. I also think the book itself improved in the last 35%, with a great KA-style epilogue.

4 - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

“The minute I saw those freckles, I knew I was done…”

Perfect in Every Way is the second instalment in the adult contemporary romance mystery series, Manors and Mysteries. Each book is an independent standalone so you are not required to read them in order. Written in first person POV the story follows fiction writer Vivienne as she travels to England to explore the mystery around a doomed love affair between her grandfather, a soldier, and Lady Harmony. She is offered the chance of a lifetime to explore family papers and the estate of Lady Harmony in aid of her research to bring this story to life...but it comes with a caveat when the Duke of Burleigh demands first pass over her chapters to protect the family name. Vivi and the Duke bump heads but a connection sparks. As she finds herself immersed and invested in a world she is drawn into she begins to realise the mystery afoot is much darker and at the center is her and the Duke.

If you enjoyed Kristen's ghosts and reincarnation series this book is for you - though the ghostly part is VERY light.

Vivi is a fun character with such an openness to her that allows her to easily fall into this world. She is curious and determined to find the secrets and she follows all breadcrumbs. Battle, meanwhile, is our MMC and he definitely fulfils the alpha role Kristen excels at in her books. He is firm in his convictions that he and Vivi are good for each other and I loved seeing that fuel his push to build something with her.

In terms of spice I would place this book at 3 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. There are approximately 5 spicy scenes with the first appearing around the 49% mark. The spice is romantic and detailed and our characters love to play which adds levity and fun to their romance. This is a safe romance where these characters have a low level risk in their relationship which we need sometimes. I loved seeing these two want their relationship and they work through it together. The build up to the romance was beautiful from their first encounter to Battle not holding back with what he feels. They were just so good.

The story itself focused predominately on the mystery around Vivi's grandfather and Battle's relative but it gives way to a story of family and finding oneself. Battle's sisters provided such a rich story that moved you (check triggers though). It feels like a lot when we first started the book but as it became more clear I was invested in them finding their futures. We do get some good old fashioned drama brought on by exes that is iconic to Kristen's books but it's just a facet of the larger world we explore. I adore the animals in the book and the family dynamics here. I liked seeing Vivi challenge Battle and for her to help encourage his sisters to build their own paths. I felt the ghostly element that was teased here wasn't very strong but the mystery from the past was very intriguing! The ending leads into quite the climax I wasn't expecting and there is an extremely fulfilling epilogue that had me grinning!

Overall, Kristen knows how to hook me in and I am eager to keep reading!

Thank you to the author for this arc!

Perfect in Every Way sees American author Vivienne Dupree travelling to the Downs, the ancestral estate of Battle Taryn, the Duke of Burleigh and his three sisters, ostensibly to research her next book but in reality to uncover the truth behind a decades-old family mystery, that of her great-grandfather’s ill-fated wartime romance with Battle’s great-aunt, Harmony. The two had met when the Downs was used as a military convalescent home towards the end of the war and love soon blossomed between them. Despite her parents’ disapproval who were intent on a more suitable match for their daughter, Harmony made plans to follow him back to America until she abruptly ended their relationship with no explanation. Now eighty years on, after exchanging letters with Battle’s sister Prudence, Vivi arrives hoping to finally find answers within the family’s papers. What she didn’t foresee is the formidable and fiercely protective Duke standing in her way, equally determined to protect his family’s privacy and to leave old secrets buried in the past where they belong.

Although this book is the second instalment in the Manors and Mysteries series, it reads easily as a standalone, with no prior knowledge of the previous book required. From the moment Vivi steps foot at the Downs, she’s met with suspicion from Battle and his eldest sister, Temperance. Both are deeply protective of their younger sisters, who have largely withdrawn from the outside world. Prudence’s confidence has been eroded by years of bullying especially over her artistic leanings and quirky fashion choices, while Chastity is still reeling from a severe traumatic event. What neither Battle nor Temperance expects is that Vivi’s presence will act as a catalyst, encouraging both women to start truly living again rather than merely existing, something that also allows Temperance, who has put her own life on hold to look after her sisters, to look to her own future. I loved the individuality of the sisters - Temperance serving as the estate’s glamorous de facto chatelaine, anchoring the household with her steely authority; Prudence appearing forever ready to strut a Paris runway with her quirky yet elegant wardrobe; and Chastity, the youngest and most introspective of the trio, happiest in the serenity of the gardens - each one unique and distinct in their own way but completely and utterly devoted to one another. Vivi is a wonderfully refreshing heroine. Rather than falling at Battle’s feet, she challenges him at every turn, matching his arrogance with wit and determination. Their banter is sharp, crackling with tension and deliciously entertaining, and the chemistry between them simmers from their very first exchanges and you can almost hear him drawling “darling” with an effortless arrogance as you read. His barely concealed irritation with her presence only heightens the tension, and their dynamic brings both humour and heat to their story. And beneath their romance runs the compelling thread of an historical mystery, which adds purpose to Vivi’s quest and as the Talyn family slowly begins to heal and reawaken, the truth about what had happened to Harmony lingers in the background, tying the present and past together in a satisfying way making for an engaging and layered read.

: PERFECT IN EVERY WAY is the second instalment in Kristen Ashley’s contemporary, adult MANORS & MYSTERIES erotic, slightly paranormal, romance series. This is historical fiction writer, American Vivienne Dupree and Battle Talyn, Duke of Burleigh’s story line. PERFECT IN EVERY WAY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from first person perspective (Vivienne) PERFECT IN EVERY WAY follows American born, historical fiction written Vivienne Dupree as she has tasked herself with researching her family history, a history connected to the Talyn family, and the Duke of Burleigh. From the outset, the eccentric Talyn family welcomes Vivienne as one of their own but Battle Talyn struggles with opening up the castle, and his family, to the possibility of betrayal. Hoping to uncover the truth about her late great grandfather and his affair with a British aristocrat, Vivienne goes on the hunt for the secrets left behind but finds herself falling for Battle Talyn, a man whose protective nature will reveal a side to the Duke no one knew existed.

Meanwhile, the reader gets a peak into the lives of the Talyn sisters: Prudence, Temperance and Chastity, each of whom has placed their life on hold for the sake of one of their own.

The world building follows several pathways as Vivienne is up close and personal with the management of the lives of the Talyn siblings: their interests and eccentricities, their secrets and heart breaks, and the precipitating factors beneath Battle’s need for control.

The relationship between Battle and Vivienne begins as. a professional meeting but will quickly turn into something more. Battle struggles to keep the family’s privacy, as Vivienne continues to dig into the past. As Battle and Vivienne begin to dance around their attraction to one another, someone else is determined to rip them apart. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to the quirky Talyn sisters: Prudence, Temperance and Chastity, as well as the family butler Fitzgibbons, housekeeper Patsy; PhD student Christian, Hamish, and Battle’s embittered ex Chelsea.

PERFECT IN EVERY WAY is a story of family secrets, obsession, heart break and acceptance. The slow building, character driven premise is detailed, intriguing, entertaining and captivating; the romance is seductive; the characters are determined and whimsical.

This book surprised me in all the ways that I hope for when I read a new book. As is true with any book by KA, I found that I fell in love with all the characters. However, in this book, it seemed to be more than normal. I loved Battle and Vivienne; however, the sisters at times stole the show. It was a toss-up on who was the favorite. While I loved seeing how it all tied together in the future, a part of me was sad at the same time because I wanted to see them get to that point, because I loved them so much (Looking at you, Tempie).

I appreciated the time that the author broke down what the writing process was for someone like Vivienne, and the respect for the research and craft that goes into it. I feel like it gave it a richness that made it more authentic. The main characters were delish. I loved the back and forth between the characters. Battle was a good leading man. He wasn't over-the-top alpha, but he was still all man. His take on certain things was appreciated and felt, and I adored the attention and respect that he had with his sisters. The sacrifices that he made to ensure that they were protected and love was on a whole new level. Vivienne was one of my favorite characters from this author, to date. She was truly perfect in every way. She loved them all so much and helped ensure the healing that this family finally needed to become the people they were destined to be.

I was expecting this book to have more of a paranormal feel to it than it did (in my mind, it was going to be more like the Ghosts and Reincarnation series-for those who haven't read them yet, do so because they are amazing), however, it wasn't. It was more reminiscent of there being outside forces that were guiding the ship, if that makes sense. The first book doesn't need to be read first, as this doesn't connect at all, other than a brief mention of the previous book. The commonality of the series seems to be the history and then the mystery of the specific location. Whatever it was, I dug it. A LOT. From the first page to the last, I was 1000% invested. There was only one small part that kept this from being a perfect book. However, as I am likely to do a yearly reread, it won't stop me from reading this umpteenth times, because these characters are more than just friends, they feel like family--only a family that one wishes that they could choose.

One of my favorites from this author. Highly recommend in 2026.

“Oh my God, I just fucked an arrogant, bossy duke.”
His amazing face filled my vision. “No, darling, an arrogant, bossy duke just fucked you.”

If there's one thing that you're absolutely guaranteed when you're reading a KA romance, is an absolutely swoon worthy MMC. And Battle was the epitome of swoon.

Vivi is a historical fiction writer whose online friendship with one of the Talyn sisters, gets her an invite to The Downs estate and the opportunity of a lifetime to dig into the mystery of a doomed love affair that is the inspiration for her current book. Here she meets the Talyn siblings, including the imposing and grumpy Duke, Battle Talyn.

These two initially bump heads because while Vivi is eager to unearth the mystery, Battle is determined to protect his family and their privacy. For all the fortune, the Talyns are notoriously private, especially Battle. But it doesn't take long for the sparks to fly between him and Vivi.

Outside of the romance, I just loved Vivi's dynamics with the Talyn sisters. I loved the way she brought her sunshine along everywhere she went and the way she just fit like a puzzle with them. The romance was swoony and perfectly paced. No third act breakup to be found here. So if you're looking for a lighthearted read with a steamy romance and an intriguing mystery, definitely give this a try.
