The King’s Choice is exactly the kind of story that reminds you why children’s books matter — simple on the surface, but quietly teaching big feelings in small, magical ways.

Wynnie is the kind of heroine kids instantly latch onto: smart, loyal, and just a little bit anxious about disappointing the people she loves. She’s the king’s advisor — which is already adorable — but she’s also a girl with a dragon who has absolutely zero respect for royal property. The moment Wynnie sees the missing goblet and realizes her pet dragon has been sipping from it like it’s her personal juice cup? I laughed. Out loud. Because of course she did.

The heart of the story is Wynnie’s dilemma:
How do you tell the truth when the truth might get someone you love in trouble?
It’s a gentle, relatable conflict for kids — and honestly, for adults too.

The king’s anger feels big and loud, the way grown‑up emotions often do from a child’s perspective, and Wynnie’s fear of disappointing him is written with a lot of empathy. But what I loved most is how the story never shames her for caring about both sides. She’s trying to protect her dragon and help her king, and the book treats that as brave, not wrong.

The illustrations (Janet King’s work) add so much charm — expressive faces, soft colours, and a dragon who manages to look guilty, thirsty, and adorable all at once.

The story is short, sweet, and perfect for early readers or bedtime. It’s got magic, a moral, a dash of humour, and a heroine who solves her problem with honesty and heart rather than fear. My grandsons loved it.

A lovely 4‑star children’s book that blends fantasy, feelings, and a very thirsty dragon into a gentle lesson about truth, responsibility, and compassion.

The King’s Choice by Lois Wickstrom felt like stepping into a story with a gentle but meaningful lesson at its core. What I enjoyed most was how the book highlights the importance of choices, character, and responsibility without feeling like a lesson. Each page revealed something good and wholesome. It does not come across as overly complicated or preachy, which makes the message even more effective. Wickstrom has a really nice way of telling her story, simple and easy to follow for younger readers, yet full enough that teachers and parents could get into the story as well. I could easily see this book being a great classroom book or bedtime story to talk about leadership, doing the right thing, or even thinking carefully before making big decisions.
Overall, The King’s Choice is a thoughtful children’s book with a positive message and an engaging style. It is the kind of story that can both entertain and teach, a wonderful combination in a children’s read.

The King's Choice by Lois Wickstrom. This is one of my favorite authors for children's books. The story always has a lesson in them. This one is about The King and his missing Goblet. He calls Wynnie in to help him solve this mystery. Wynnie knows at once who took the Goblet but is afraid to tell the King. During the mystery Wynnie tells the King that if he continues to dwell on the problem it won't ever go away and he will always be angry. Wynnie realizes her dragon has stolen the Kings cup but she doesn't know what to do about it. She is afraid to tell the truth because it might get her in trouble but if you don't tell the truth it will always get you in trouble. Such a cute book for kids that has all kinds of neat things, dragons, fantasy, and lessons. I always grab these books for my new grandson to add to his library!

The King’s Choice is the fourth book in the Kingdom of Mir Series by Lois Wickstrom. Wynnie is tasked with solving another of the king’s dilemma’s … and as the story unfolds Winnie (and co) impart a few important lessons along the way – things like problem solving, critical thinking, and dealing with anger.
This is a children’s fantasy story, that has a bit of a fairytale feel. With kings, castles, a dragon, and engaging illustrations that all help to draw young readers into the adventure. There is also a step-by-step craft activity provided at the end.
The illustrations, as apposed to the previous installment, are really interesting, engaging, and much more suited to the story.
I wonder what other adventure’s await Winnie and her friends.
Happy reading…

Have you ever been so angry that you swore you were never going to speak to someone again or say that you never want to see them again? The King is feeling that way about the King of Sher, who deliberately broke the King's favorite glass that belonged to his mother. When the king is upset, the messenger is sent to get Wynnie to help advise him about what to do. Wynnie is a smart young girl who has helped the King in the past. Wynnie helps King to understand that the more he thinks about what happens, the more his angry feelings will come back, just like the comeback can. I love the message and the moral of the story! The fact that there are instructions to make your own comeback can is awesome!

The king is mad because his friend, another king, broke something special to him and the more he thought about it the angrier he got. So Wynnie pulled out their come back toy can and reminded the king about anger and needing to change things to help him deal with his feelings. This book is a great short read to help little ones understand some of their feelings and emotions and how to change their mindset and behavior when these feelings arise. The illustrations are great and perfect for this book. There is also instructions on how to make your own come back can included. Perfect for story time or if you’re little ones is having trouble with feelings or emotions and cannot put it into words.

The King’s Choice is a super fun and charming story that’s easy to get hooked on right away. The whole mystery around the missing goblet keeps things interesting, and Wynnie is such a relatable character as she tries to do the right thing while protecting her adorable (and slightly mischievous) dragon. The story has a great mix of light tension, humour and heart, and it gently explores themes like honesty, problem-solving, and making thoughtful choices without ever feeling heavy. It’s a really enjoyable read with a warm message, making it perfect for kids and a delight for anyone who loves a sweet, imaginative tale.

This was a cute story about not letting your feeling of anger get the better of you. Wynnie and her dragon Mera are asked to see the king due to him being upset. As they show up it appears the king’s favorite Glass has been broken by the King of Sher. Being Angry and upset about the broken glass. Wynnie talks to the king about letting the anger go or it will just keep coming back and that being upset is understandable. This is a wonderful book to help explain a major feeling in children and how you might be able to come up with a solution on how to handle it. I also love that it has an activity of how to make your own Comeback can with your child(ren).

The King’s Choice is a sweet and fun story about Wynnie, a girl who helps the king solve problems.

When the king gets very angry over a missing goblet, Wynnie has to figure out what to do. She knows her dragon is involved, but she is scared to tell the truth.

The story teaches simple lessons about honesty, handling anger, and making good choices. The characters are easy to like, especially Wynnie and her mischievous dragon. The illustrations are bright and add a lot of charm. There is also a fun activity at the end, which makes it great for kids.

It is a warm, gentle story with a good message about telling the truth and thinking before acting.

Another super adorable story from this author! This is another story in her miniseries about Wynnie helping the King handle different problems. This time he is very upset because his friend broke his favorite cup and he is very mad, especially when his friend didn’t apologize. Wynnie and her dragon Mera help the king find a new way to handle his anger so that he doesn’t stay angry. The author does a wonderful job creating stories that young children can relate to, along with beautiful illustrations that children will enjoy. This is a great story that will be helpful for children to learn how to handle big emotions, like anger. Plus, who doesn’t love a story with a pet dragon?!

All the characters in this story are creative and fun, I also enjoyed the illustrations that are colorful and will keep any child engaged throughout. I also enjoyed how easy and entertaining this story was to read. The story is presented in a way that any child will learn from it. This is a great children’s story that I highly recommend.

Lois Wickstrom is fantastic at creating wonderful, engaging children’s stories and this series, and book, is just a single example. It was so much fun to get back into these characters and see what new adventure they were going on this time.
I loved the premise of this book. It was all about learning and applying forgiveness, even when it might be hard to do so. As usual, the illustrations really bring this book to life and it is what pulls my kids in each and every time. We have read this book multiple times already and I am sure we will be reading it even more to come.

When the King of Sher breaks a glass that was the King’s mother’s, the King is furious with King Sher and never wants to see him again. Wynnie and Mets show the King a trick to not being so upset and how to move on without the anger.
This is another adorable Lois Wickstrom creation that tells a wonderful story and teaches a lesson that the child doesn’t realize they are being taught. The writing is easy to read and the illustrations are beautiful. I will definitely be sharing this with my littles.

The King has just had a meeting with a neighbouring King, but now he is angry and upset because he broke his favourite glass!

As he calls in his advisor Wynnie to come and help him, he keeps on repeating the story and becoming more upset and angry.

This is where Wynnie shows the King her come-back can, but will this help the King to make a choice to either stop or start a war?

This is another brilliant learning opportunity within a charming book in this series, where forgiveness and kindness are taught in a positive way.

The King's Choice is a great follow up to its predecessor, giving the reader a glimpse into how to deal with conflict. This is a great skill for young readers to learn, and for their parents to have a reminder, that you control your own actions. Anger is an emotional response to a sad feeling that you feel, and Mera helps the king to understand that in this story. I loved this book and the awesome life lesson!

The King's Choice is a great quick read that gently explores how to feel your emotions without letting them escalate. As a foster parent, it was especially meaningful to read this with our current placement, since we’re navigating some big emotions together in real life.

It’s a really sweet story that feels both comforting and relevant to what many kids (and caregivers) are experiencing. A simple but powerful reminder that emotions are okay—and manageable.

Anger is like the come-back can, until something changes it will keep coming back.

This was a cute little story about how we handle our feelings when something breaks at the hands at someone else. That people aren’t always going to apologize, they aren’t always going to acknowledge how their actions can hurt others. It’s a great little reminder how we forgive sometimes because it is about making you feel better not the other person. Great for all the littles ones in our life!

The King's Choice by Lois Wickstrom is a wonderful story that helps young readers learn about handling anger.

The king’s friend took his special cup and broke it, then left without saying sorry. The king feels very angry and can’t stop thinking about it, so his adviser Wynnie and her dragon try to help him.

Wynnie has a creative way to help the king let go of his anger. This book is a helpful resource for teaching children how to manage their feelings.

This is part 4 in the Kindgdom of Mir series, the theme of forgiveness still strong from the previous part.

This books offers new and expressive illustrations and also teaches a lesson of managing our extreme emotions.

It is neat that there’s an instructions of how to build the comeback can from the story!

I really enjoy this series, with the King, Meera and Winnie. As always, the artwork, is beautiful. This story teaches on forgiveness, when we constantly dwell on something or someone that has wronged us, we get more and more angry instead of learning to let it go and move on, we can’t change what has already been done.

Always such important lessons inside Lois Wickstrom books. This one was no different, learning to forgive for yourself and your own anger not the person that wronged you. Learning to adjust your plan. Colorful illustrations as always in this series that brings the story to life and relatable to young readers.

What a great quick story on anger and forgiveness! Being angry doesn't fix the problem that made you angry so the more angry you are the more time you'll spend thinking on what wrong and not finding a solution to the problem.
Loved the instructions on making a come back can too!
