Book 2 in the Frosthaven Academy series. Start with Arctic Bonds.
Jaye Marellen has always believed Belle should have stayed with the Beast—because let’s be honest, the grumpy guy with claws was the best part of the story. She writes romances full of banter, heat, and a little bit of magic, where happily-ever-after doesn’t mean sanding off the rough edges. When she’s not dreaming up growly heroes and the women bold enough to love them, you’ll find her reading spicy stories, sipping too much coffee, and rooting for love stories with a twist.
Did I willingly, on purpose, while being of sound mind, put myself through this after how much I hated the first book? Yes. Yes, I did. Now onto book three I go!
I’m DNFing over halfway through the book. Same issues I had with book 1 persist, but they feel worse. Everything feels so repetitive - the writing, the scenarios, the characters… I just keep trudging through hoping it will get better and it doesn’t. - They went on another hike… which they did in the first book. Although this time they are only supposed to be taking x amount of hours… ok, but in the first book it turned into an overnight in a cabin and no one batted an eye. No one should bat an eye if this is longer than expected by ten-fifteen minutes. - One chapter ends with her roommate asking her if she is ok and the very next chapter starts with her roommate again asking her if she’s ok on a different day/ new location, like why don’t we just flesh it out in the previous chapter or skip her asking and wait for the next chapter. - she is with Luca and the twins in one chapter and she runs into Luca’s arms. He leaves chapters ends and next chapter Kane is sneaking her out of class to go see Luca with a mushy reunion, like ok you just saw him two pages ago. - the guys are still so one note, but let’s keep pointing out their subtle differences. Like the twins, my gosh. They have the same everything (face, posture, voice, mannerisms) except Kade is softer though… sure. - the counsel being so against more than 2 why they are more that two is an absolutely ridiculous plot line. And not all of a sudden it seems like Emory is helping them even though she’s been hostile to that point… yeah ok.
I want to know how this turns out and writing this review somehow makes me want to go ahead and finish, but I literally can’t waste any more of my winter break on this.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I genuinely enjoyed the plot of the first 2 books and plan to jump into book 3 as soon as it’s available. Both books 1 and 2 were short at under 200 pages each but captivating and kept me interested in what would happen next.
The FMC is stronger than she realizes and I can’t wait to see her big breakthrough. The MMC’s all have their own “purpose” and strong points in the dynamic of the relationship and I can’t wait to see how they evolve as well. As of now there’s still hesitance because of the council. Even though they want to break through and not care about the consequences they still do but I am ready to see them burn everything for her 🙌🏼 the last twist with the cursed wolf was magnificent! Definitely didn’t see it coming but so happy to see it through 👏🏼
This is my personal opinion but my biggest critique of these books is the repeated phrases and descriptions over and over. I felt as if they were fillers at times and just lack of experience in descriptive writing at others. I am by no means a literary critic I am 10000% a vibe reader but this is something I personally struggled with throughout. I also greatly wish (only because it’s my personal preference) it was multiple POV to be able to get more in depth with each if the mates feelings and have a better rounding of thoughts and information but once again I am a vibe reader and the vibe and the plot was there for me.
Thank you so much for allowing me to ARC read this book and I look forward to reading the next in the series.
The whole book is about the h (Rae) doing everything possible to avoid solidifying her mating bonds because of shifter council threats. Only we haven't been shown anything the council can do, or met anyone abused but them. It's ruled by only 4 shifters (a bonded group), IMO they just weren't a scary enough presence to stop the MCs from sealing the bond. I just felt like the h and her mates were weak and easily controlled. The rando twins that the h officially mated at the end of book 1 are most prominent here, as the h's protector/trainer and friends. I was pretty resentful of how important they became, eclipsing the older (but still unsealed) bonds. This is a perfect example of how not to do a harem.
Overall this book is a complete and utter waste of time No new bonds are formed. And the obvious stalling will make you want to scream (why do authors stall?? no one‘s holding a gun to your head just step away from the laptop and go torture someone else). In this book the h is asked if she’s okay about 6000 times, tells us how drained she feels about 10,000 times, gets fingered endlessly (very little sex), and listens to a bunch of pop psychology in class. The latter attempts to explain the nature of mating bonds, which is ridiculous. By virtue of their divineness/fatedness and since they unite mythical creatures (wolf shifters), mating bonds wouldn’t be subject to that kind of banal human pseudoscience. I wanted more magic and less podcast level therapy. The teacher actually calls a room full of shifters “human” .
Pnr, academy, atypical wolf shifters, evil council, mystical, reverse harem with bonds. Second in this series is Predictable and basic, but easy entertainment. Minor errors. This world is not well defined but appears to consist of wolf shifters that form up to two bonds with one female. The governing council claims more bonds are dangerous but the reader figures out the council is scared as more bonds means more power. People with more bonds are separated, imprisoned or?? SPOILERS: angst and tension abound as the group fights their bonds to hide from the evil council. Clearly she is the mystical medicine woman destined to change the world and the council fears her power. Book two ends with her still not bonded, but the council nipping at their heels.
I’m really enjoying this story and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. But it could have REALLY used a better proofreader. There are so many errors in tense. As someone who reads a lot, it frustrates me to try to figure out what the author is trying to say. It really detracts from the story. Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars. Also there are inconsistencies in the story. For instance the day after Thanksgiving, Cora wakes up in her dorm to a warning that Rae had been kidnapped. But she had left the day before to go visit her mates families and was going to be gone for 4 days. So she wouldn’t have been there. It’s little inconsistencies like this that drive me nuts.
I’m enjoying this storyline and where it’s going. It’s intense, fast paced, intriguing and different but I feel that you still don’t get to know the characters on a deeper level. I feel that the bonds are so intense they’re just firefighting but you aren’t learning much about them as a person. I still want to see what’s to come and hoping we get to know them more. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
I truly want to like this series more. There are grammar or spelling errors every chapter. It honestly feels repetitive and like nothing happens until the very end. It's a lot of waffle and fluff. The core of the story is nice. It has great bones but gods give me more meat on the bone. I do like the use of other mythologies, I wish there was more detail even on that.
A throughly imaginative story, this book was full of revelations even as the feeling of danger grew more treacherous. I loved how everything was woven together seamlessly. I found this book engaging and enjoyable to read. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.
The editing is… bad. So many typos, missing punctuation etc, and the story itself is so predictable. And yet it keeps drawing me in and I want to see what happens next.
I really wish the author could find a few different ways to say “through our bonds I could feel xyz” because honestly it’s multiple times every chapter at this point
This is getting good. The action and the mystery is off the charts. Question remains what will she do….and now there is six who is potentially mates. It definitely covers every aspect of what wolves can do and powers that can emerge. Let’s see if the council will take this lying down.
Like the first, I found this book to be just as repetitive. I honestly am not even sure why I read it through.
Most of the book felt like a cycle of Rae going to class, being surveilled, and avoiding solidifying her bonds at every possible opportunity. Chapter after chapter started to blur together, and even when the plot did move forward slightly, it lacked the depth or intrigue needed to keep things engaging.
For this reason, I will not be continuing onto the third. The plot had a lot potential, but the execution was poor.
This kept me captivated the whole time, I was not able to out this book down once. Rae is such a strong MFC, being thrown things left and right and still pushing through. Will she accept fait? Can’t wait for the next book!!!
A book that has so much yearning but also is such a fast burn? What a fun mix. To have everything you want and it be yours.. but is just outside of your reach... onto the next one!
I enjoyed the first book but the third was just a constant repeat every single chapter of the same worry and situation. There was no development in the story it was stagnant.
This book is definitely becoming interesting, especially with that ending! Quite a few gramma mistakes in this one but it was fine, could still read it. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
DNF 8%. She ended the first book being given two choices and opened this amidst picking the wrong one. It’s the theme of this series, I think. Even in the writing choices. I was skimming it before it even really began and I just don’t have any more optimism to offer this author.
I will be reading them all. And fighting to let the editing issues not bother me. Great story, but the editing is really needed to clear up mistakes, add clarity, and to keep Kade and Kane, etc from being mixed up.
I didn't think that I would get into this series but I've completely fell in love with it. I love rea and coras journey so far. I can't wait to see what rea decides to do in the next book. I really hope she has chosen her mates and takes the risks.
Rae has multiple mates. She's got the twins and the three potentials. She is seen as a threat and therefore forbidden to see and be near the potential mates and anyone who could be mate material. The council fears what it cannot control.
This is a really good story. It shows what each of her mates goes through along with how it effects them and her. Can’t wait to read the next book and see what happens next
really good series. I’ve enjoyed the mixture of mythology and psychology in the books so far. I’m looking forward to Rae stepping up to become what she needs to.
Okay maybe she got the memo but it’s like we went from 40mph in cruise control to 100mph within the first few chapters. It was quite a quick turn around and a little too much honestly…
