From the author of the mega bestseller Confessions of a Fortysomething F##k Up comes another laugh out loud novel full of wit, wisdom .. . and women who have had ENOUGH. It’s a sun-kissed quest for justice fuelled by friendship, laughter and finding that inner steel. The perfect summer read for all those who enjoy Sophie Kinsella, Marian Keyes and Bella Mackie.
So, I Met This Guy . . .
Well, isn’t that how every love story starts? But what we don’t know is, how will it end?
For Maggie, she certainly didn’t expect it to involve discovering the supposed love-of-her-life stole her life-savings, along with her home, heart and self-esteem.
So, when she meets Flick, a young reporter, who realises this story could be the big break she’s been looking for, they set off together to catch him as he goes on the run across Europe. After all, she’s got nothing left to lose, right?
But as the pair embark on the road trip of their lives, unexpected twists, hidden secrets and hard truths are revealed. And as an unlikely friendship begins to blossom, they realise it’s not just about finding the guy, it’s about finding themselves.

I've read a couple of books by this author now and I do like the way she writes. Her sense of humour and wit also works well on page.
In this book we are following Maggie and Flick. Maggie is in her late forties when we met her, she's living in a damp caravan on a friend's field.
Flick is mid twenties, she a journalist at a local newspaper and trying to get a break, there's only so long she can write about pole dancing pensioners.
When these two lives collide, we are treated to a road trip around Europe.
I think this particular trope makes a fairly unsurprising plot line, it was obvious from early on where this was going however it was fun, action packed and I enjoyed the read.
If you enjoyed watching Inventing Anna or The Tinder Swindler, you will enjoy this book.
This was such an enjoyable read! I am a huge mood reader and know it almost certainly would have been a 5⭐ read had I been reading it when I was on holiday somewhere sunny. But reading a book set exploring Italy, Spain, and Portugal while shivering in Scotland in December was still fun! I loved Flick and Maggie's friendship. They were both great characters with their own storyline but them coming together made so happy. Alexandra Potter always writes such beautifully uplifting stories full of hope and this was no exception! I definitely recommend this read and know I will be buying a copy for my mum when it's released next month! Thank you to netgalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book was so entertaining - it reminded me of a cross between Thelma & Louise and Shirley Valentine. Following the story of a 49 year old woman who has been recently affected by romance fraud, and a journalist in her 20s, this story took the women from Monte Carlo to Tangier in the name of making someone accountable.
I loved all of the characters in this book. Being in my early 40s I still related to Maggie, our 49 year old protagonist, much more than to Flick, the energetic eco conscious journalist. I too am constantly having to explain pop-culture references to my younger colleagues! But out of all the characters, my favourite was George, Maggie’s best friend, who reminded me of a Richard Curtis character, in all the best ways.
The story takes you on a trip from Monte Carlo to Rome, to the Amalfi Coast and Ibiza, and onwards. During your journey, you get to sample the atmosphere of each of the places they visit, as well as learning about the character’s present and past. I have visited quite a few of the places Maggie and Flick travelled to and it was almost like revisiting them again.
This book was a good time from start to end. At no point was I bored or wishing for more action. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to read about real life and the fallout of its darker side (but not too dark), but also the bonds of women and our resilience.
Thank you to Pan MacMillan for this ARC of So, I Met This Guy.
Love a good dose of Alexandra Potter. I’ve been reading her books for over 12 years so I was looking forward to this one. This book wasn’t quite the same humour level as confessions of a 40 something but there was more raw emotion. The story tracks Maggie who has lost everything to a lovebomb fraudster and Flick a junior journalist looking for her big break as they journey into the unknown to catch Theo and bring him to justice.
I loved the friendship Maggie and Flick built. A couple of great twists in the story. Another great read by Potter. I’m ready to go back through her back catalogue to find my next adventure.
This was a really enjoyable read even though it was pretty obvious which direction the plot was going to go in. I especially loved the friendship between Flick & Maggie that was definitely the highlight of the book for me. This was my first read by Alexandra Potter and I thought she was a great author; her humour genuinely made me laugh out loud. I was lucky enough to receive an e- & audio ARC of this book & I thought the narrator did an excellent job they really kept me intrigued throughout. I can 100% see this being a big summer read, perfect for a sunny afternoon.
this book felt like a love letter to all the women and girls figuring out their lives… (me essentially)
reading this book was just like watching a documentary, you know the ones on romance fraud? we follow Flick a mid-twenties, local paper journalist who is looking for a big break. i mean she can’t continue writing about pole dancing pensioners right? and there’s Maggie — mid forties, living in the middle of nowhere in her caravan, left basically homeless after her ex boyfriend’s fraud wiped out everything she had. as these two come together, we follow their trip across Europe as they hunt down Maggie’s ex…
i absolutely came to love the relationship between Flick and Maggie🥹 they were both such amazing characters with their own problems & storylines, but when joined together they were the epitome of girlhood.
this was the first book i’ve read from Alexandra Potter, and i fell in love with her witty humour! her writing was so beautiful and uplifting — this book truly couldn’t have come to me at a more perfect time🌟
so, i met this guy… comes out on the 28th of Jan!
thank you to the team at Pan Macmillan Australia for sending me this copy! so grateful🫶🏻🫶🏻
This book was a fun one, from start to finish. You get a real feel for the characters along the way especially Maggie & Flick, written very well making it very enjoyable, Maggie & flick shared an age-gap friendship that blossomed while chasing a romance fraudster along Europe’s coastline. It was heartwarming and funny all at once. If something seems too good to be true, then it probably is!
A wonderful story.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book, I was very excited about this one!
So, I Met This Guy . . .Well, isn’t that how every love story starts? But how does it end – a happily ever after? Or with the discovery that the supposed love-of-your-life has stolen your life savings and your home, trashed your heart and demolished your self-esteem? Maggie is barely fifty years-old, and she's not one to give up on herself. So when she meets Flick, a young reporter who realizes this story could be the big break she’s been looking for, they set off to catch him as he goes on the run across Europe. After all, she’s got nothing left to lose, right? But as the pair embark on the road trip of their lives, unexpected twists, hidden secrets and hard truths are revealed. And as an unlikely friendship begins to blossom, they realize it’s not just about finding the guy, it’s about finding themselves . . .
I always eagerly anticipate Alexandra Potter’s books and I think this latest one might just be my favourite. Listening to the audiobook version I was wary if I would become engrossed as much as normal when reading a physical copy, I needn’t have worried, I became completed embroiled with Maggie and Flick almost immediately.
Maggie and Flick are potentially two of my favourite character relationships in a book, they couldn’t be more different but their underlying traits creates a connection that, by the end of the book, I challenge anyone to not be envious of.
The story is fast-paced and yes, at times it might be a little predictable but did that matter? Not an iota! I was with Maggie and Flick at every single point of this journey, feeling like I was visiting all the amazing locations with them. And Birdie, what a fabulous woman, I won’t say more to not ruin anything but I think the world would be a much happier place with her infectious personality - even considering the final concluding twist in the tale.
This is a book that I will highly recommend to all who want a feel-good, emotionally charged, character-focused story that will have you laughing out loud and grinning like the Cheshire Cat!
As a big fan of Alexandra Potter’s already I was delighted to receive an early copy of SIMTG from her and Pan MacMillan.
I absolutely love a book that really makes me genuinely FEEL! Excitement, sadness, laughter - I felt it all! I always looked forward to picking this book back up. I loved that I had little moments smiling to myself where something was mentioned chapters before are meeting the chapter you’re currently on, and there is an unexpected making of sense that you didn’t realise you needed to know until now.
I loved the characters and their journeys among the excitement and intense chase of Theo. It was so heartwarming and the different settings of the book was wonderful to read and made me long to be there. I also just wanted to say *Spoiler Alert* …. I didn’t doubt Birdy for a second!
Some of my favourite quotes from book were:
“Everyone talks about the desire to be loved, but it’s the desire to be needed that’s stronger”.
“That’s the problem with bruised hearts and battered emotions, thought Maggie. You couldn’t put ice on them”.
Loved it so much, thank you from the bottom of my heart Alexandra and Pan Mac!
49 year old Maggie is living in a caravan on a friend's farm having lost her home and business to a romance fraudster. When Flick, a twenty-something local reporter, is sent to interview her, an unlikely friendship and trek across Europe begins. Maggie wants to confront Theo to his lying face and Flick is hoping for her big break story. They set off to his last known location of Monte Carlo with nothing but Flick's credit card, but quite quickly come into enough money for a real adventure to begin. Along the way they meet feisty American heiress Birdie, a character that I absolutely loved for her no-nonsense attitude. They follow the cruise he's on by driving from port to port, and on the way they heal each other a little bit every day.
It's a story of found family, female rage and a search for justice all set to a backdrop of stunning locations. I only wish it had come out while I was on a cruise earlier this year, visiting quite a few of the same places they do! It's a great read with all the good feels by the end.
On the surface this is a cute, fun read with a whirlwind European adventure, two women from different lives throwing care to the wind and learning a lot about themselves on the way.
Beneath that there’s a more serious exploration of gaslighting, coercive control and the damage left behind when you put your trust in the wrong person.
Maggie and Flick are likeable and you’ll be rooting for them from the start. Birdy is a great side character and even if I guessed where her story was going I still found it enjoyable watching it play out.
A really easy read, I particularly enjoyed how the narrative switched between perspectives mid scene or paragraph, so you see what both characters are thinking and well as saying. I’m not sure I’ve ever noticed anyone do that before so thought it was clever.
This will make a great summer holiday read. I’ve been to almost all the places Maggie and Flick end up and enjoyed reading about them exploring, which brought back fond memories.
𝗦𝗼, 𝗜 𝗠𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗚𝘂𝘆 is an entertaining adventure that's a little bit like Bridget Jones meets Dirty John meets Eurotrip.
Maggie and Flick are an undeniably delightful duo to journey alongside. From Monte Carlo to Rome to Ibiza, it was fun to sample the atmospheres of each stop as well as the trips taken to Maggie's past as she recounts her story to Flick.
I love an intergenerational friendship, and though this one isn't overly huge, their age gap adds to the charm and humor. The trek to find Theo and get justice takes a bit of a backseat as the two begin to bond; what started out as finding the fraudster morphs into finding themselves as secrets and truths are exposed.
Emotional depth balanced with comedy creates a heartwarming and uplifting tale of friendship and self worth. This was my first read by Potter, and I'll gladly read another.
🎙️ Shelley Conn handles the narration on her own and does a remarkable job. It was an easy and enjoyable listen!
✨ Thank you Libro FM for this ALC! [Pub Date: 2•10•2026]
I loved this audiobook, it was funny, but also quite poignant at times. I really liked Maggie and Flick, the main characters, who strike up an unlikely friendship whilst on the hunt for the man who destroyed Maggie’s life. I loved following Maggie and Flick on their personal journeys, but also the physical journey they took tracking down the romance fraudster across Europe. The story is told from both Flick and Maggie’s points of view, and occasionally by the scammer and also Birdy, a brilliant minor character. There was a fantastic twist about three quarters of the way through that really shocked me, but also delighted me as it opened up the story even more. The epilogue is brilliant as well. I loved Shelley Conn’s performance, she’s a new-to-me narrator who I’ll definitely be looking out for in the future. As you can tell I loved this one, and highly recommend it if you enjoy contemporary fiction featuring unlikely female friendships. Thanks so much to Macmillan and NetGalley for my digital copy via the NetGalley app.
Having already been a fan of Alexandra Potter’s previous books (especially One Good Thing), I went into this with high hopes, and I wasn’t disappointed! The dual PoV between our two FMCs gives great insight into both of their mindsets and motivations. Added to this are the jump-backs to the past, which give the story a more rounded feel and leave you feeling more connected to the characters. Potter’s first “baddie” is as despicable as you’d hope, which had me cheering the women on even more! I also feel I should mention Birdy and George, these two more minor characters were brilliant additions to the story. Well-paced, funny, emotional in places, and inspiring too.
Thank you for Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for granting me access to this ARC
A novel about Maggie, a woman who is conned out of her life savings and home by her boyfriend, Theo. She teams up with a young reporter named Flick to hunt him across Europe, from Monte Carlo to Tangier. The story is a mix of adventure and comedy that explores friendship, romance, and self-discovery as they go on the run to expose the fraudster.
I would highly recommend this book, it was amazing. I loved the plot of having to find the con man and flick and maggies friendship growing throughout their quest. There was a slight plot twist at the end, was slightly predictable but still created tension and made you want to keep reading.
Absolutly loved this book....light hearted, full of humour and such an easy read. Kept me wanting to read more to see how it ended.
2 highly unlikely characters with an age difference, thrown together....travelling across Europe in the hunt for a stole watch.
Maggie, 49, a woman now living in a caravan with a huge cash flow issue having been fleeced by her boyfriend who has now fled. Flick, a struggling young journalist who is trying to make her mark within the profession. Writing an article on women who have been cheated on, these 2 characters develop a friendship which sees them chasing a cruise ship around Europe where the elusive boyfriend is supposedly travelling.
A really lovely relationship between these 2 women, who despite their age gap, share many values and traits.
This was such a fun and entertaining read. You learn so much about the characters especially Flick and Maggie. It was cleverly written with the background of Maggie and Theo and why they are on this road trip to catch him woven carefully into the story. I loved the two FMC who on paper shouldn’t get on but bond through their values despite the age gap.
I really enjoyed this. It had me captivated from the start. A fantastic story of trying to search for justice, empowerment, rage and rediscovering yourself but written in an entertaining and humorous way.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange of my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book! The main story centres around character Maggie who, after losing her home and business to a romance scammer, is living in a mouldy caravan in a friend's field, with the threat of eviction from the council.
When she meets Flick, an enthusiastic local journalis, and tells her story, the young reporter convinces her to search for her ex and confront him. This search takes both of them on an adventure with consequences that neither could imagine!
I really liked the characters, especially Birdie, a sassy elderly rich heiress the duo meet on their travels. A cosy, feel-good story!
So, I Met This Guy was laugh-out-loud funny and surprisingly heartfelt. Maggie’s disastrous love story sparks a chaotic, cross-Europe chase that’s full of twists, bad decisions, and moments that had me both laughing and yelling at the characters. While their actions were definitely frustrating at times, the emotional payoff was worth it. The standout for me was the female friendship—warm, supportive, and genuinely lovely to watch unfold. Overall, a funny, messy, and uplifting read that I really loved.
Maggie and Flick make the perfect pair, and I loved following them on their journey. Trying to find the finance fraudster (which made me think of the tinder swindler), whilst chasing him around Europe was such fun to read about.
Zero context quote from the book that had me bursting out laughing - "Saltburn meets Beatrix Potter".
The audio is narrated by Shelley Conn, who I believe is from Bridgerton. She does a fantastic job with this bringing all characters to life.
Thank you to Macmillan for the advanced listener copy. I will be looking up the authors other books now as I found this hilarious.
I absolutely loved this book so much! This was such a fun read! An age-gap friendship of two women chasing a conman around beautiful coastal Europe… a story of unexpected friendship, self discovery, and absolutely gorgeous views. I had such a great time with this one!
An easy to enjoy, easy to read and easy to please novel. The characters are enjoyable but not really exceptional. The plot is predictable and there in is the problem for me. It takes a long, long time to unravel, even though we all know what is unraveling.
Alexandra Potter always writes books with characters you instantly warm to. This book is a story about Maggie a victim of romance fraud. Flick is a journalist on a local paper who normally covers stories about missing cats etc. She gets to hear about what has befallen Maggie and goes to find her to see if she can cover her story. What follows is a journey across Europe where the women's relationship develops into a lovely friendship. I love the relationships and humour in this book. There are also some surprises which I didn't see coming. Loved it!
This is a light, cute story of two quite different women who go on an adventure to catch a thief. It reminded me of a movie that you'd find on Lifetime. There's some interesting backstory, but overall it didn't feel believable. Best saved for when you're in the mood for a madcap caper.
Enjoyed this book. Had some great laugh out loud moments and enjoyed the relationship between the two main characters and the friendship that developed amongst the chaos.
Reading this book felt like watching a documentary, and I liked it. I was engaged the whole time, the book has a number of unexpected plot twists, and the most important plot, was the perfect ending. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, their biggest punishment is who they are.
