Pierre Jules Théophile Gautier was a French poet, dramatist, novelist, journalist, and literary critic. In the 1830 Revolution, he chose to stay with friends in the Doyenné district of Paris, living a rather pleasant bohemian life. He began writing poetry as early as 1826 but the majority of his life was spent as a contributor to various journals, mainly for La Presse, which also gave him the opportunity for foreign travel and meeting many influential contacts in high society and in the world of the arts, which inspired many of his writings including Voyage en Espagne (1843), Trésors d'Art de la Russie (1858), and Voyage en Russie (1867). He was a celebrated abandonnée of the Romantic Ballet, writing several scenarios, the most famous of which is Giselle. His prestige was confirmed by his role as director of Revue de Paris from 1851-1856. During this time, he became a journalist for Le Moniteur universel, then the editorship of influential review L'Artiste in 1856.
La Morte Amoureuse was very good - I love the darkness of the piece and even did a paper on it. I haven't read the other stories in his collection sadly - my weight limit was too high and I couldn't bring all my books back. Will have to read more later!
This is an enjoyable vampire story. Very simple but with a unique perspective. It is old-school so don't expect any graphic sex or violence. Nevertheless it is moving and romantic.
Awesome selection of Gautier's works. Sometimes his texts are so complete and well edited that today I think he could also be a editor and revisor for himself. There are many issues about his tales in realism fantastic genre, two of them that always inspires me are the dream and the reverie.
In 1836, for example, the story La Morte Amoureuse (Clarimonde) was published pointing out how mysterious our dreams and daydreams could be.
Indeed we spent a good amount of time sleeping in life, sometimes 6, 8 hours a day. And how many times have we carried into the dream forces or elements that have stained the mind during the vigil? Maybe always, maybe this is one of the mechanicals roots of sleep. There are many studies about those issues since Greek philosophers passing through Freud, etc and all modern neuroscience.
Dreams have always been a great mystery to mankind. Psychologically there are many people who prefer to live their dreams reality almost like a reverie rather than their own vigil.
What would happen if the dreams were so intense that we wondered if we were really asleep or if we were awake? The process would begin to become even more worrying if we start to be in doubt if the dream is the reality or the reality is a dream.
In other words, we could live a double existence. Not as Dostoevsky's tale "The Double", but a double life between dream and vigil, which really leaves us in doubt about the real. "I took it in a dream every night (wish to God that it is a dream!)".
Gautier also describes the experience of the authentic cut of personalities of the same self because of it: "From this night on, in a certain way my nature unfolded, and within me there were two men who did not know each other." Now I considered myself a father who dreamed all night that was a nobleman, sometimes a nobleman who dreamed he was a priest. He could not separate the dream from the vigil, and he knew nothing was beginning to happen and where the illusion ended. "
In addition to this process of consciousness and reverie, this history presents how the values of passion and faith can be blended, merged and challenged with moral precepts and religious institutional subterfuges.
But this is only for one of the tales from this book, there are many great others texts inside it.

Magnifique!
