Rate this book
A secret promise. A forgotten heroine. An extraordinary story. In Nazi-occupied Paris, an unassuming Frenchwoman risked her life to protect some of Europe’s greatest treasures from Nazi looting. Her quiet defiance was key to the Monuments Men’s success. This novel brings her fascinating story to light.

Paris, World War Juliette Durand plays a dangerous game. To the enemy, she is a quiet museum worker—plain, obedient, invisible. In truth, each day she risks her life. One mistake could mean discovery—and death.

Decades later, Alice’s beloved grandfather entrusts her with a dying wish. Alice sets out for Paris, intrigued to learn more about Juliette Durand—the enigmatic woman he mentioned only in his final days. As Alice follows the fragile threads of Juliette’s life, she uncovers the untold story of a Frenchwoman who risked everything to protect Europe’s treasures from Nazi theft.

By uncovering Juliette’s remarkable story, Alice discovers not only the woman behind the Monuments Men’s success, but also the inspiration to transform her own life.

A compelling tale of courage and resilience, shining a light on a forgotten heroine of World War II.

Inspired by a true story.

Skip to the end, to the true story of Rose Valland. It's the only part of this excessively boring book that is actually worth reading. The concept is excellent and the true story upon which it's based is amazing, both of which then, doubles the reader's disappointment as they slog through it. The facts of her life are golden material. This writer's touch, by layering it with imagined insecurities, timidness and exhausting inner reflections of not one but two female leads, makes it a test of endurance that doesn't do Rose Valland's life story justice, and makes it almost impossible to finish reading. Skip this one.

Excellent true story about the woman who worked at the Louvre during World War II. How is she put up with the Nazis who were overseeing her how she was able to keep records and then how she was able to retrieve the precious artworks and valuable so we’re stolen from the victims of World War II, including the Jews and other people that went to concentration camps it captivated me throughout the entire book a great read if you like historical novels, and about wonderful women who were not recognized for their talents

As an artist and avid reader of historical fiction, I was eager to read this book. Unfortunately, it was a big disappointment. Like many historical novels, there is a protagonist who finds an old diary and the story alternates between the past and the present. For some reason, the diary sections are written in the third person which I found puzzling and distanced the reader from the characters and the story. I agree with other reviewers that the author’s notes at the end are the most interesting part of the book.

Ode to A courageous woman

Rose Valland, remains largely unknown to the world. A person who worked to preserve the beauty and patrimony of France, never sought recognition. Being a woman of modest background, aka not a member of the old boy's club, she has never gained wide recognition. This short novel is valiant attempt to remedy that wrong. I urge you to read Rose's story for she and other under recognized women deserve it.

This is truly a fascinating book that will keep you riveted from start to finish. The writing is very realistic and the author captured the mood of war torn France during the Nazi takeover. Juliette’s courage, as she protects the art from the Nazis, is spellbinding. The characters are true to life, and I enjoyed experiencing their lives, so similar yet during very separate times. I highly recommend this wonderful book..

This was a fascinating dual timeline read that deals with the stolen art the Nazis confiscated during WWII. Juliette was an assistant curator tasked with protecting art during the war. Alice, in present day, goes to Paris to look Into the history of this woman. An amazing story based on the true life story of this woman, Rose Valland, who eventually worked with the Monuments Men to return these famous art pieces to France.

Very good read based on a true story

This book details how the Nazis stole art and other valuables from museums and Jewish families all over Europe. Be sure to read the true story of the heroine it is based on at the end. They are still searching.
