Omg, I just finished this book and I have thoughts. As a reviewer, and as a mistress,I went through a full rollercoaster of reactions. The absence of aftercare at the beginning? Honestly, a major point of contention for me. It immediately set off alarms, and from a critical standpoint, the dynamic initially reads as deeply unhealthy for any real-life BDSM framework.
That said… the author clearly leans into a dark, unapologetically filthy M/M dynamic, and wow it commits. The progression of their relationship is messy, morally gray, and definitely not meant to be aspirational, but it’s undeniably compelling from a narrative perspective.
My sub was completely hooked too, especially with the heavy emphasis on humiliation and degradation. The objectification? Intense. The way one of them is reduced to nothing but an object… it’s dark, it’s provocative, and it absolutely delivers for readers who enjoy that kind of power imbalance in fiction.
From a structural standpoint, I will say the emotional payoff hits when finally aftercare is introduced. That shift adds a layer of depth that, for me, redeemed a lot of the earlier tension.
The ending itself? Strong, satisfying, and thematically consistent. The epilogue, though… I’m still a little conflicted personally, it didn’t fully land for me.
Overall, as a review: this is a bold, divisive M/M read with a heavy focus on dark dynamics, and while it’s not a model for healthy relationships, it’s incredibly engaging within its genre. Definitely recommended just know what you’re walking into 😉

I was not ready for whatever this was 😂
What I expected: a novella that explored an authority k*nk between a recruit and his superior.
I mean, from the title and blurb, that’s the impression I got. I was expecting it to be erotica. That’s fine.
What you will actually get when you read this book:
-mostly degradation and humiliation, rather than just authority (to the point where it almost feels mislabeled?), followed by some praise at the end
-100% erotica, no plot or character development at all in 144 pages
-check the TW on this because there’s also crazy foot stuff, nasty smell stuff, and worst of all the “love interest” forces someone to perform s*xual acts on the main character, that the person does not consent to
Look, I’ll read anything once. And I don’t get triggered, so I didn’t read any content warnings. But this book had me more disgusted than feeling anything else. I found myself thinking things such as:
“Did he actually just use that word?”
“He put his foot WHERE?”
“He smelled like WHAT?”
“He licked WHAT???”
Anyways, I can solidly say it wasn’t for me, but if you’re super into the k*nks listed above, maybe you’ll find this hot?

There are things I loved in this and things I hated. It feels kind of all over the place and the kinks feel disjointed instead of woven together into the characters. But that's probably because the characters themselves were all over the place. I feel like more pages were necessary for character development here; it felt like the story was broken up into two halves - first half being degradation and almost hate (self and otherwise), with the second half being more accepting and caring, but there wasn't really a middle ground to join the two.
There are also a couple very crass inner monologue and dialogue moments that I think were included due to the military setting, but actually sat rather uncomfortably and felt forced. Like the characters didn't feel like they'd say or think those things, but "military" and toxic masculinity. Things are toxic in here in general, so buckle up. Check the tws/cws before hopping in.
There was also a lack of character descriptions or even a timeline/setting timeframe to reference. I guess it's not surprising necessary since this is pure smut, but it would have been appreciated imo.
All in all, I ate this up and I'm immediately running to the next book in this collection, but it's not a favorite read of the year by any means.

I saw there weren’t many reviews so I really wanted to write one. Firstly, a lot of the negative ones would’ve been avoided if people read full trigger and kink list! I read it and I was ready and excited. (not a fan of foot play either but the way this was done was hot because it was all about submission and degradation)
this was super short!!! i would give up everything to get a full length book where we get more of what happens to them and with them. I honestly didn’t expect the ending to be that way, where it seemed to be he got a bit softer but that’s what made me crave for more book. This is a super fun and fast paced read though, FULL SMUT with a sprinkle of plot.
I love this dynamic so much. I loved how it was done and how raw and honest Lane always was. I wish we could’ve gotten dual POV because I bet Hale’s thoughts were crazy.

I knew this was erotica going in, but I've seen it splashed around the romance threads bunch. I wouldn't really consider it 'romance' in that it doesn't actually have an HEA. It does but more of a HFN or really, how most erotic novellas/novels end, with a payoff.
This is some SPICY SHIT (without that kink specifically, thank god). Like I've read a lot of erotic novellas (pumpkins, magic rocks, mystical dildos), and they are usually high in the spice. This was another level. Almost all 131 pages were about being edged. Like edged to god damn oblivion. Everytime I felt that surely, surely we'd get that release.. it was pulled away. Like damn. DAMN. I haven't been edged by a book like this in a LONG time.
I hated all the characters. That did not stop me from enjoying it. I didn't care for the story (I did like the sad little twist at the end, but again, that wasn't an HEA. it was an ending though. still enjoyable) The point of the book was the enduring of that lip smacking spice and hot damn was I enjoying it. (I don't even like feet shit..)

I learned that Lane was thirsty as a dog before I even knew his name. Right off the bat, it felt like I was reading bro’s diary; it was THAT personal THAT quickly.
At first this book started off just inappropriate, then it became filthy (in a good way), then it was just depraved, then back to mouth watering, then just flat out depressing, then I was wondering WTH am I reading. However, by the end I started to think I was the one with issues because I couldn’t get enough 🙂↕️.
This was a full circle moment because in the beginning you’re like ’This guy Lane is a kinky bastard’ and it gets to a point where you’re considering if he has any self respect because let me tell u, there is no aftercare in the beginning and Hale gets MEAN at times 😭 but then you see Hale’s real intent, how he’s actually possessive of Lane, and he starts throwing praise into there. Thats when you realize this book was made for a good time 😌🙌🏽
One star off because, to put it bluntly, that epilogue was pointless. It didn’t give a much needed romantic conclusion, it just left me even more unsatisfied imo. Though, I don’t think these two are really fit for a romantic relationship seeing as Lane just views Hale as his biggest wet dream come true.

One star off because, to put it bluntly, that epilogue was pointless. It didn’t give a much needed romantic conclusion, it just left me even more unsatisfied imo. Though, I don’t think these two are really fit for a romantic relationship seeing as Lane just views Hale as his biggest wet dream come true.

I’m trying anything to get out of this reading slump. I will say to me this was very much a psychological deep dive into why people enjoy this type of degradation. Not my thing personally for various reasons, but I see why some people enjoy it.

An authority kink was a new trope for me, and I was immediately invested. For such a short story, it delivered plenty of tension and anticipation. Honestly, I was stressed on their behalf. I can't imagine being put through drills while trying to keep my focus elsewhere.

Some of the kinks aren't my thing in particular, I sometimes have a difficult time especially with humiliation and degradation, but the author did an excellent job in writing the MC as someone who is completely into them and that made all the difference for me. June 28, 2026I love me a spicy book, but some of this was a bit too intense for me. Way more pain than I'd like. And the whole foot scenes threw me out of it pretty hard because it's definitely not my interest. Im not the target audience for this specific book so I'm gonna hold back a rating. Highly recommend if you are looking for intense degradation and pain (basically an abused sex toy but he's happy with it) 😅
