A BRAND-NEW romantic, Spring getaway read from bestseller Jennifer Bohnet ❤️✨ Perfect for the fans of Jill Mansell and Fern Britton.☀️🏝️ Can a grieving chef and a group of writers find their own happy endings?

Eight months after his wife Jacqueline died in a tragic car accident, Michelin stared chef and proprietor of Villa Celestia, Guy Lyon’s life has been in freefall. Consumed by grief and plagued by questions as to why she was in a taxi that fateful day, the doors to Villa Celestia have remained closed.

When a good friend, Sandy Thoreau, asks to rent the villa on the French Riviera for a fortnight to hold a women’s writers retreat after being let down, Guy reluctantly agrees.

All the women at the retreat are looking forward to being inspired. Helena and her friend Mandy are writing debut novels, Isobel is editing a cosy crime story, Liz is desperate to kickstart a new book, self-published author Lorraine is looking for advice and Becky, well Becky is a law unto herself.

Over the course of the next fortnight, two of these women will change the course of Guy’s life forever and new chapters - hopefully with happy endings - will begin for all of them.

The perfect tonic and escapist read to the South of France full of warmth and second chances.

Sixteen years ago Richard and I, with our then dog, 14 year old Holly in a trailer attached to Richard's bike, cycled down through western France via the canal paths, arriving in Antibes in July. With the exception of two fleeting visits back to the UK we have lived in France ever since.

For the past five years we have lived in a small cottage in central Brittany with one large collie dog called Viking, one fat cat known as Little’un and a young tortoiseshell cat called Missy. Oh, and there are various ducks and chickens in the garden, and a large pond with about a hundred fish in!

I have contributed short stories and serials to many of the UK women's magazines including, The People's Friend, Candis, My Weekly, Best, Yours and my stories have been published in Australia, Sweden, South Africa and Ireland.

I also write magazine features and my work has been published in national magazines and newspapers like, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Home and Country, Devon Life. For over three years I had my own newspaper column in the South Hams Group of Newspapers, that took a wry look at family life.

One Liner: A cozy read

Michelin-starred chef and proprietor of Villa Celestia, Guy Lyon, finds his life spiraling after his wife’s death. Sandy Thoreau, a good friend, asks him to rent the villa to host a women’s writing retreat for a fortnight, and he agrees reluctantly.

The women who attend the retreat are looking for inspiration and come with their own stories to tell. Maybe they can all help each other and hope for new beginnings or happy endings.

The story comes in the third-person POVs of different characters.

My Thoughts

Now, I’m always ready for some virtual tours in books, and after enjoying a few such trips to South France (by another author), I was curious to read this one. The book is set in Antibes, which has an old-world charm and some new pubs, etc. Needless to say, I loved the mention of the old cafes tucked into alleys, the busy dock, and the freezing sea.

The villa is just as beautiful, and I really liked the descriptions. It was easy to visualize the setting. It does play an important role!

The book has a few threads that run in parallel. Not all of them are connected, but they do fit together. After all, it’s a story about writers attending a writing retreat.

I like that we also see the realistic side of running a retreat, the financial pressure, the real estate in the region, and such stuff. It is not easy in today’s economy!

The story is heartwarming and low-stakes. While there is some conflict, it is resolved easily and without drama. That would make it a really cozy read, one you can enjoy with assurance that everything will be fine without annoying you. That said, it still deals with some serious issues.

The writers who attend the retreat are interesting, but not everyone gets the same importance. Because of that, I couldn’t connect with a couple of them. However, the discussions about writing (use of AI), publishing, etc., are interesting. It doesn’t go into too many details, but also doesn’t skim over what’s important.

This isn’t a deep story, but it is warm and hopeful. I like the ending too!

To summarize, New Chapters on the French Riviera is a low-stakes and cozy book about writing, second chances, moving on, finding love, and family.

Thank you, Rachel’s Random Resources, NetGalley, and Boldwood Books, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

New Chapters on the French Riviera
by Jennifer Bohnet

Jennifer Bohnet’s "New Chapters on the French Riviera" is a delightful first-time read for me that captivated my interest from the very first page and kept me engaged until the last. This charming novel is filled with richly developed characters and vivid descriptions of the stunning coastal town of Antibes on the French Riviera, evoking a strong desire to visit this picturesque location.

The story centres around Villa Celestia, owned by Guy Lyon, a man whose life has been spiralling since the tragic death of his beloved wife, Jacqueline, in a car accident. Deeply consumed by his grief, he wrestles with unanswered questions, particularly regarding why Jacqueline was in a taxi that fateful day. As a result, he has shut himself off from the world, metaphorically and literally, with the doors to his exquisite Villa Celestia and restaurant remaining closed. However, this all changes when his friend Sandy, who was Jacqueline’s best friend, approaches him with a heartfelt request. Sandy is seeking a new venue to host her writing retreat after their usual location suffers significant damage. Although Guy’s initial instinct is to refuse her request, the strength of their friendship prompts him to reconsider, leading him to agree to the plan.

Among the attendees of the writing retreat is Liz, a newly divorced and highly successful author struggling to find inspiration for her next book. Her friend Isobel, who is currently editing a cozy crime story, joins her in pursuit of creativity. Two other friends, Mandy and Helene, are eager to embark on their writing journeys and are looking to pen their first novels. Additionally, Becky, a local influencer, aspires to write her first nonfiction book, while indie author Lorraine seeks guidance and advice. Each woman arrives at the retreat carrying her own dreams and challenges, creating a rich tapestry of interconnected stories.

The book skillfully intertwines multiple storylines, providing insight into the hopes, fears, and aspirations of each character. It paints a vivid picture of friendships blossoming, the joy of shared meals, and the warmth of community, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the French Riviera. As the participants navigate their writing endeavours, they also explore personal growth, support one another, and even confront their pasts. The parallel threads, while not all directly connected, come together to create a cohesive and engaging story, showcasing the power of creativity and connection among writers at a retreat, emphasising that some events are simply destined to occur.

Jennifer Bohnet never fails to deliver virtual sunshine with each chapter, and I loved this trip to the French Riviera. Having read so many of her books, I feel like I would easily adapt to a visit and recognise the places from their descriptions alone. An Art Deco hotel and a secret garden would definitely be high on my list, along with a stroll along the Bord de Mer.

As I have come to expect, this is an ensemble piece made up of a rich selection of characters; each one perfectly imagined. In main focus is Guy Lyon, a celebrated and Michelin award-winning chef, whose restaurant with rooms, Villa Celestia, stands idle as Guy battles through the grief of losing his wife in a tragic car accident. The Villa sounded simply gorgeous with its views across the Mediterranean and rooftop patio, where I would have loved to relax with a glass of something cool. Guy sounded broken, and it felt natural to wonder what the story was that led to his loss. Seeing his return to form through his love of cooking was a real treat.

I adored Liz, a successful but blocked romance writer, who had seen her own personal heartbreak leave her doubting the existence of love. I simply loved her character and pictured a collection of my favourite authors who shall remain nameless. I was drawn to her gentle nature and kindness. I would love to see what her future brings.

Incorporating the other characters, Sandy, Helena, Mandy, and Isobel, the main story centres on a writing retreat that sounds idyllic. It was a treat to learn a little more about the writing process and what goes into bringing a book to life. There is a mixture of genres, along with a split of new and established authors, as well as those working in the indie arena.

This is a terrific story that left me feeling uplifted and eager to return to this location, which Jennifer Bohnet has made her own.

New Chapters On The French Riviera is a perfect summer holiday feel-good read, Set mostly in Antibes, on the Mediterranean coast, this story brings together a cast of interesting characters, most of them writers of one sort or another. Sandy and Romain organise regular writers’ retreats in the area he doing the marketing, while she manages the hands-on work. When their normal venue becomes unavailable, they prevail on chef Guy Lyon to let them use his beautiful Villa Celestia for the two-week event. Guy has been in the doldrums for eight months following the death of his wife and he’s not that keen on sharing his home with anybody. however they are good friends, so he relents. Of the six women at the retreat, three are succesful published authors, each with their own reasons for being there, two are novice writers keen to learn the craft and the sixth is a social media influencer who has decided to write a novel. While all the characters feature to some degree, romance is in the air for Liz and Guy, while Helena, whose birthday occurs during the retreat, is in for quite the surprise during her stay. The setting is idyllic. The villa has beautiful tranquil grounds, and is just across the Bord de Mer from the Mediterranean. There are plenty of cafés, wine bars and touristy shops for the characters to explore, while the nearby Port de Vauban plays host to the yachts of the rich and famous. The tone of this story is light, inviting and definitely creates a relaxing holiday vibe. I really enjoyed it.

This was a charming summer read full of lovely characters. Set in the coastal town of Antibes, it is impossible not to picture yourself reading this story surrounded by the beautiful scenery.

Following the death of his wife Jacqueline, Guy has shut himself off from the world for the past 8 months. Now the sole owner of Villa Celestia, he consents to renting the villa to his friend Sandy so she may host her writers retreat. His one condition is that he does not want to interact with the guests—he will only be the chef behind the scenes.

The story alternates POVs between Guy, Sandy, and other members of the retreat. I loved watching the friendships and relationships develop between the characters, but the main romance felt rushed and fell a little flat for me.

I thought the descriptions of the setting were incredible and could picture everything vividly in my head. I also enjoyed how the little mysteries unfolded towards the end. Overall this was a beautifully written quick read and I plan to read more by this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Guy was heartbroken when his wife died in an accident and couldn't bear to keep the small boutique hotel with a Michelin starred restaurant that he ran with her open. When his friend Sandy was desperate to find somewhere to run her writers retreat he begrudgingly agreed to let her use the hotel and cater for them behind the scenes. Enter a disparate group of writers keen to learn on the retreat plus take advantage of visiting the area.
The only time I've visited the south of France was on a trip ashore to San Tropez from a Mediterranean cruise and my memory is of a dirty, crowded hideously expensive place. Fortunately the area described in this book couldn't be any more different and a place I would love to visit. It also gives an insight into the life of an author and what they go through when trying to write a book. Budding romances occur, great food is consumed and long-forgotten secrets come to light. A book that I really enjoyed, 4.5*rounded up to 5*.

New Chapters on the French Riviera is another delightful novel by Jennifer Bohnet. I was hooked from the opening chapter and I read this in one sitting. A lovely read for summer with a beautiful setting. New Chapters on the French Riviera has some great characters. This is a novel that I would highly recommend.

This multicast book might have the title that makes it sound like it’s part of a series, but it is a standalone that still manages to give a gentle feel of being part of all the characters’ continuing lives.

In the French Riviera, transplant Guy has had a tough couple of months. Drowning in house sorrows he initially refuses to host an upcoming writer’s retreat. Finally to help out his friends, Guy opens his Villa doors again and leads in a lot of changes.

Some of the changes that come with the different people gathering in a spot are a little cliché but overall it was a sweet collection of happily-ever-afters ( in one form or another).

There are several narrative voices, they manage to stay distinct even as they all find small changes in their lives they did not anticipate.

The writers retreat is serious business and the few aspects discussed made me think it was very realistically portrayed.

I would recommend this book to fans of more gentler romance plus found families.

I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

Guy Leon is a hotshot chef who recently lost his wife and shut down his award-winning restaurant. Sandy is the wife of his closest friend and his late wife's best friend. She needs a location for her upcoming writer's retreat. He reluctantly agrees since he's still mourning his late wife and trying to figure out his next steps.

I enjoyed this story, which takes place in a villa in Antibes in the South of France. Liz is newly divorced and trying to write her next book, her friend Isobel is also looking for inspiration, friends Mandy and Helene are looking to write their first book; and Becky is an influencer in town and wants to write her first book. It was told from the perspective of the different women as well as Guy, and set in the glorious setting of Antibes. The locations were brought to life, and I loved the friendships that developed between the women. The writer's retreat sounded wonderful, great, good, a time to write, exploring Antibes, some romance, and wild swimming in the mornings. I've read quite a few of Jennifer Bohnet's books and enjoyed them all. I'm looking forward to this one.

Thanks @boldwoodbooks, @netgalley and the author for this arc.

There are plenty of story threads in this novel with each of the participants in the writing retreat coming with their own reasons for attending and their distinct characters. Guy, the owner of the villa has agreed to help out his friends who have been let down by a venue and in doing so takes the first steps to move out of the grief he has felt over the loss of his wife. He is at a crossroads in his life and unsure as to what his next move will be. He is also aware that he maight not like everything he finds out about his wife and why she was in a car the day she died.

It becomes clear that some of the new friends' lives are linked in ways they are unaware of. There are secrets which are uncovered and new friendships and relationships formed. The setting in Antibes is just right for a Summer escapist read as the French Riviera shimmers in the sun.

In short: new beginnings and answers from the past

Award winning chef, Guy, has not opened his restaurant with rooms in Antibes since his wife's tragic death. When his friend, Sandy, asks to use it after the venue for her writing retreat. his immediate reaction is to refuse, but he ultimately agrees in view of their friendship. Initially he intends to stay strictly in the background, but gradually becomes more involved. Little does he know that meeting one of the women may change his life going forward.

I really want to visit this writing retreat! The relationships between the women, the sunshine, divine food and the Mediterranean just across the road; what more could you want? Jennifer Bohnet has created a really evocative novel, which draws you in and has you reaching for your own suitcase! I loved the characters and I really enjoyed the unexpected development that really added to the overall story. Lovely.

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC of New Chapters on the French Riviera by Jennifer Bohnet. This is a romance novel set on the French Riviera about a group of women who attend a writing retreat and learn a lot about themselves in the process.

The book is told from multiple perspectives and it makes the book flow very well and keeps the storyline moving quickly (as there are a few mysteries involved as well).

This was a novel I finished in 24 hours - I literally stayed up past midnight as I wanted to know what happened! I loved the characters and the kindness of everyone shone through the whole book. It was a refreshing read and really joyful. I have never read a book from Jennifer Bohnet previously but will be picking her books up from now on.

In Antibes, on the French Riviera, Sandy is desperate when the villa she usually rents to host her writing retreats suffers damage. She approaches Guy, who has become a recluse following the death of his wife, hoping to convince him to reopen his hotel and restaurant. Although he needs substantial convincing, the decision to ease his way back into normal life will have long-term positive effects for him and Sandy.

A group of strangers descends on the villa to embark on their writing retreat. But in addition to upping their word count, this diverse group of women create friendships, come to grips with long-held secrets and experience blossoming love, all accompanied by warm Mediterranean waves.

This was an enjoyable, escapist novel about found friendships and embracing second chances. Ideal for summer & beach reads.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy - all thoughts are my own.

Reading this author's books is a lovely way to escape for a few hours, and this story is emotional and heartwarming. Guy is coming to terms with the loss of his wife a few months earlier in an accident. Their shared boutique hotel has remained closed. In response to a desperate plea from a good friend, he agrees to host a writer's retreat. The reader gets to know the participants and their stories, and the developing relationship dynamics are believable. The evocative setting provides a vibrant background to an interesting narrative of friendship, new beginnings and secrets. It's an uplifting story, perfect to read when you need a little sunshine.

What a gorgeous book this was. Full of friendships, food and warmth. Guy was recently widowed and his boutique hotel and restaurant was empty. His friends Sandy and Roman needed a venue to host their literary retreat and when he realised how much they needed his villa he granted them use. Agreeing to cook if they hosted he stated he needed to stay in the background. Once the guests started to arrive he met Liz one of the writers.
What happens next is a slow burn with a meet cute.
It’s a gentle story and I loved it.

I really enjoyed this sunshine filled story set in a stunning location.
It was wonderful to have so many characters sharing their stories - a group of writers coming together to hone their craft and to share their experiences and to support each other. This provided an excellent opportunity to see behind the scenes in the writing world!
Also a gorgeous gentle love story blossoms too, it was so charming to see it develop.
This is a perfect holiday read and I highly recommend dipping into this beautiful book! It will make you want to join the characters at the villa in Antibes!

This is my first book by this author and I am pleasantly surprised.

The story takes place in a villa in Antibes, where a group of, some of them aspiring, authors gets together for a writers' retreat. The characters are well rounded and even the one that, at first, appears to be rather flat and uninteresting develops to a likeable person with interests that inspire the others. The various storylines all lead up to a certain point, which is a surprising and emotional twist.

A well-deserved four stars and I will certainly read more of her books.

I liked several aspects if this book, the setting was great, descriptive and a place I have never read about before. Guy's grief was also very real, although, reasons for his remorse is not found until later. The more realistic aspects of running a business, finding affordable realty and the use of AI for publishing were nicely incorporated into the book pages.

I liked the romance too, it was low key, but enjoyable. The MC's really did get to know each other over the span of a few days.

Overall a nice easy read.

The best for interesting characters & detailed locations

Jennifer is one of the few authors that I preorder as soon as her books are listed. I love her details on the locations and for conveying a real experience of the places she writes about. The characters are always interesting too, all of them, not just the two lovers and not only their present day. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Perfect spring romance in the south of France.

Set in sunny Antibes the writers retreat is almost doomed until Sandy convinces the still grieving Guy to open up is villa so they can use it for the writers retreat.

So many interesting characters and sub plots you easily get lost in the book and devour it quickly. Lovely read with interesting and surprising stories to follow.

This was such a good read, I loved it & I couldn’t put it down! It’s really put me in the holiday mood with Jennifer’s gorgeous descriptions of Antibes in the spring evoking the sights, sounds & aromas of this Mediterranean coastal town.

The story focuses on a writers retreat which takes place at Villa Celestia, owned by Michelin starred chef Guy Lyon, and situated on the beach front in Antibes. Guy & his late wife Jacqueline ran it as a restaurant with rooms, but it has been closed since Jacqueline’s untimely death in a road accident. Now their friends Sandy & Romain are using Villa Celestia for the forthcoming writers retreat they are organising after the venue they’d booked has fallen through. Reclusive Guy finally agreed to let them use the villa & to cook for the event - as long as he doesn’t have to meet their guests. The guests include Liz James, recently divorced women’s fiction writer, who has come with her friend crime writer Isobel, both looking for inspiration along with 4 other writers.

I really liked the setting of the story in the book retreat, which helped me to understand a little about the process of writing a book & getting it published. There was an interesting discussion one evening about the use of AI in writing - very topical!! By the time I’d finished this book I found myself wanting to go on one of Sandy’s writers retreats!

I loved the camaraderie that developed amongst the women on the retreat as they shared experiences of writing & publishing & learnt from each other, talking about these as they shared daily activities such as mealtimes, early evening walks & aperitifs, working on their books & even early morning swims for some. I found the main characters were relatable, dealing with real life issues around relationships, change & grief alongside the issues with their writing. I enjoyed how the experience of the retreat helped some of them with what was happening in their lives when not writing. It’s a lovely story, which I really enjoyed & recommend as a good holiday read.

This is a lovely summer read set in Antibes on the French Riviera. It tells a few different stories that are all interwoven through a 'Writers Retreat'. It's not a taxing read, is easy to absorb and the characters are likeable. It lacks somewhat the depth of Bohnet's other books set in France but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

The stories are well interwoven and easy to differentiate between; the ending is satisfying and, overall, it's a good sun lounger read!
