The Last Petal

Rate this book
Reclusive botanist Regan Crocus never planned to stay in the small town of Spray, Montana. She was supposed to escape—until grief, duty, and the ghost of a violent past rooted her in place. When the man who once destroyed her life returns, something else comes with him: a figure in a dark suit offering her a perfect, blood-red rose.

Every petal holds a promise. Pluck one, say a name, and death will follow.

Drawn to the rose’s impossible power and dangerous intimacy with the god who offers it, Regan must decide how far she’s willing to go—before the last petal falls.

Darkly atmospheric and charged with moral tension, The Last Petal is a supernatural thriller about trauma, justice, and the dangerous beauty of temptation.

Penelope lives on the east coast of North Carolina, where beach life meets spreadsheets. By day, she works as a tax accountant with a fondness for math and the order of operations. By night she is a dreamer, writer, and storyteller. She has dabbled in countless hobbies, cheerfully admitting to being “mediocre at best,” but writing is where she has truly found her passion.

At home, she shares life with her loving husband, two children, and their dog. While creating characters who live extraordinary lives on the page, she is glad to live an exceptionally ordinary one with her family. In her own words, she embraces the extraordinary through her stories, and The Last Petal marks the first step of that journey.

I received this book as an ARC, please see my honest review below.

I'm sorry, but what the hell was this book? First, it's labeled as a thriller and fantasy (though it appears that a dark romance label has been added since I downloaded the eARC). While there are fantasy elements, yes, it's more of a romance with a little bit of fantasy sprinkled in to make things a bit more intense - that's cool, I love a good romance, but market it accurately. I'd say at least 25% of this book takes place in a bedroom. I can see how this would be marketed as a thriller - lots of death, a police investigation, vigilante justice, but that still wouldn't be my initial thought.

Now all that aside, I read a variety of genres, so the marketing alone isn't really a thing that would impact my review. I'll admit that the writing of this book never really hooked me, I felt like there were a lot of things glossed over or rash decisions made and that generally speaking the book could have benefitted from another 50-100 pages to fully flesh things out. But, the big problem I have with this book is the absolutely insane ending.
Okay cool, this actually sets up some solid tension that I can vibe with. . BUT THE INSANITY OF THE ENDING AND THE CHOICES THAT BOTH REGAN AND EYDR MAKE DON'T MAKE ANY SENSE AT ALL!!! ALL INSANE. Anywhoo, this probably would have been a 3-3.5 star book for me with a better ending. I did like that Regan .

I would like to thank Crooked Circle Press and Penelope Knayme for inviting me to read an advance copy of The Last Petal.

Well, the ending was unexpected, that's for sure. I loved the whole premise of the story. It felt foreboding and I wanted to see where the story would end. A unique situation that could lead to dire consequences.

We have the classic unnatural being. Always described as the same type of character: tall, tailored, dark, and beautiful. What I did find surprising was the twist of the rose’s significance. It was poetic how the god of death was tethered to his loved one by her decisions to kill others. That's unstable footing for affection to flourish. Death is not usually associated with love. It's the complete opposite. Love should breathe life. So for the two main characters to fall in love in such a way was flawed from the start.

When Eydr explains how he was watching Regan for years, I was a bit confused on why he first saved her. What made her different than the others who befell similar circumstances? The way I read it, Eydr would only appear when a soul was ready to be collected. Following that logic, then he would have only met Regan during her first ordeal with Jack. Why did he intervene? Eydr didn't fall in love with her until afterwards, when years passed by with him following her. And the way he calls her ‘blossom’ didn’t shout romantic. It reminds me of the way you would speak to a child. Flower would have been a better term of endearment, or even thorn. Anything apart from blossom.

Then there's Regan. I couldn't find myself rooting for her. When she made the first move to be intimate with him, I found it quite odd. I didn’t get any sort of allurement from the beginning. As the relationship continued, I only got sexual attraction between the two, not love. It’s true, whenever Eydr left to recuperate, she did find herself in the company of Hunter. If I truly loved another person, I would be mindful how being with another man might make him feel, especially if I knew deep inside that it was anything but platonic.

Then enter Eydr’s wife. A side character that was brought in to create some friction. I would have liked to seen more of her. I believe she could have been a strong personality in the story.

The ending seemed rushed. To be honest, it did shock me. I thought I knew what was going to happen. I was so wrong. Everyone’s actions were out of the blue. Regan’s particularly. It felt like a decision made in the moment of anger, as in a spat. She doomed her love so easily. Even for Eydr, he knew that that was going to be their last day together and he decided to spend it away from her? If the story was able to continue a few more chapters, it can be a great story. Right now, it leaves me wanting.

ARC received from: Booksprout— Thank you for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Summary: Regan is haunted by her past. When she is offered a rose that has the power to wipe bad people off the face of this earth, will she take the chance to bring justice down on those who deserve it?

Overall Thoughts: Oh, boy. I try to find something to enjoy about every book, but this one made it so, so hard. I say the following things as someone who has been through similar traumas to the main character, so please bear with me. The main character has endured assault and abuse at the hands of the men in her life, and the book almost feels like it is capitalizing on this abuse. She spends 90% of the story in a "relationship" with an abusive figure, only to fall into the arms of someone else who is seemingly manipulating her. The relationship ends within the last five pages and everything, supposedly, is wrapped up in a neat little bow. It feels disjointed.

Writing: The writing itself, while clunky in some areas, was fine overall. I feel Knayme would've benefitted from perhaps putting this story in the first person, as Regan's emotions are a major driving force in the story.

Characters: I struggled a lot with Regan as a main character, as both her choices and her story felt tough to swallow. I don't feel she had the growth, nor the closure, she truly deserved.

This was such a cool and unique concept, truly like… I’ve never seen anything like it and that alone brings me joy.

I for sure do not think this is a thriller so the publisher definitely was wrong in categorization - it’s more like… I guess dark-ish romance…/maybe Romantasy. I’d call it a genre-bender for sure.

I definitely had to keep flipping pages wanting to know what was next, but a couple things didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I wish we got a bigger glimpse into each petal that was used - like I feel like those could have really built up the story more especially because the reason for each petal felt so deep rooted in her trauma.

All that said, it’s a solid 3 ⭐️ for me. I think as a debut it’s, a really good opener but would benefit from some length. It’s short - so there’s room to expand on some pieces. But all in all, a worthwhile read and again, such a cool and unique concept. I am glad I read it! And the author is absolutely wonderful so I’ll definitely read her future work because again, this is a debut and shit, she wrote a whole book, while I… did not.

The plot of this story is really unique, and it’s a quick read. Regan is a botanist who had dreams and aspirations away from her small town in Montana, but life got in the way, so she is currently stuck there working for a local nursery. She is still trying to heal from a past trauma and the death of her mother.
Eydr appears in her life and leaves her a magical rose with 25 petals. All she has to do is pluck a petal and say a name, and that persons’ life will end. In some ways, I feel like Regan’s relationship with Eydr is symbolic of her journey towards healing and finding justice for what happened to her.
I actually really liked Hunter the FBI agent. I thought that Regan’s relationship with him was much healthier than her relationship with Eydr. To me he symbolized her conscience at odds with power the rose gave her.
I was devastated by the ending (no spoilers), but there is some hope at the end too. I would have liked the ending to be a little more drawn out.
Overall this was a really intriguing story that made me think about the complexities of morality and justice. This one is definitely worth a read!

I enjoyed reading The Last Petal but I definitely think it could have been better. The concept is interesting and I liked that the main character is a botanist and gets to utilize her knowledge during the story. There are elements for a good story -- high stakes, crime/thriller backdrop with vigilante justice, romantic tension. Unfortunately at the same time there were some aspects which were lacking. Some scenes and character decisions seem to come out of nowhere, as does one reveal of a secret/twist that seemed unnecessary. I love short books, but in this case I think more pages would have been preferable. Much of the story needs to be more fleshed out. The characters of Regan and Hunter are inconsistent and there just isn't enough character development.

There are several open door spicy scenes, which don't affect my rating. It's not my thing, but I know many love open door and this may enhance the book for those readers.

I can't wholeheartedly recommend The Last Petal but it could be a good choice for fans of dark romance, dark fantasy, and spice.

A dark, atmospheric concept that left me wanting more

The Last Petal has such a compelling premise—a reclusive botanist gifted a deadly magical rose by a Death God, trauma-tinged justice, forbidden temptation, and an FBI investigation threading through it all. Penelope Knayme creates a moody, atmospheric world that hooked me from the start, and the blend of paranormal romance and supernatural thriller elements kept the pages turning.
That said, the story felt a bit rushed to me. There were moments and emotional beats that I wished had more time to bloom, especially given how rich the themes of trauma, morality, and power could have been with a little more depth. I enjoyed the plot and the characters, but I was left wanting more detail and space for the story to fully unfold.
Overall, it’s a good, fast read with a unique premise—one I think could have hit even harder with a bit more development. Still, if you enjoy dark paranormal romance with a twist, The Last Petal is worth a try.

Regan thought she was going to leave her small town in Montana, but she gets stuck. The FMC has been through alot of loss, grief, and abuse over her life. When her abuser returned, a dark shadow daddy god appears with a red magic rose. The rose is tempting, but is she has huge decisions to make. Will she make the right choice? give in to others desires? Will the people she loves survive?

This supernatural thriller gave me dark beauty and the beast vibes. It was more dark romance than thriller or fantasy. It was spicier than what I usually read (5🌶), and at times I felt like that left more questions or a few plot holes. Is temptation always as it seems? is justice always right? Will she ever get out of the small town?

This was a wild ride for me. It started at four stars, then jumped to five...and then dropped to like, two. Maybe three. I get why it ended the way it did, and I appreciate a reclamation moment, but it just felt so out of left field. For me, it just didn't feel like the right ending for the build-up of the story. It was too abrupt and felt too...chaotic? Like, I had to scroll back and reread a couple of chapters because I was so confused by the turn it took. Also, there was a clear allusion to a fifth rule that seemed like it could have saved everything, and that was just skipped over.

Idk, it felt like a lot of strong character development that kind of imploded. I really enjoyed the story, the mystery, and the characters, I just didn't like where it ended.

3.75 starts adjusted to 4
Thank you to the author and Crooked Circle Press for the advance reader copy of this book.
The Last Petal was a deliciously sinful read.
Regan Is visited by a Death God and given the power to dispatch vile men with just a pluck of a petal and a name whispered on her lips.
There's 2 problems: she's falling for a God of Death with whom there is no future and an FBI agent is poking around about all of the deaths.
This was a great, quick, low-stakes read. I really liked the premise and was engaged with the choices that Regan had to make. I was pleasantly surprised that this book did not have the happy ending that you thought it would.

Romance fantasy

This story is a fantasy romance not about the story stated in the write up. The ending was not an ending, the story just stopped leaving many threads hanging. I tired of the intimate scenes quickly waiting for the story of the rose and petals to develops but it never did, seeming like the story about the rose as an afterthought developed only to highlight the romance which itself didn't really develop. Almost felt to me like two stories smushed together to make one. Characters needed more development not just physical descriptions. The story idea sounded interesting too bad it got lost in the romance.

I struggled with what to rate this.
Landed on 3.5 rounded up to 4

Let me start by saying, I WOULD recommend this book to fans of supernatural thriller-esque romance (?) It has a lot of good stuff going on.

I didn’t love how the love story played out between Regan and Edyr. He seemed to come around, get weird and jealous, there was spice, then he was gone again. Because of that, I struggled with a large portion of the story. I wanted more from him.

One of my notes was, “Edyr is annoying, I’m cheering for the cop” and I will stand by that thought. If there’s a Team Hunter, I’m on it.

With all of that being said, I couldn’t put this book down and enjoyed it from start to finish. I remain confused about how both things are true, but, yes, go get this book.

Thank you to the author and Crooked Circle Press for and ARC of this book.

A friend recommended this ARC to me and I devoured it in a day!
It honestly had a bit of everything in it: a touch of dark romance, some fantasy and a bit of thriller too. It was fast paced and such an original storyline that I was keen to see what would happen next and how it would end.
At around 200 pages it's that fun read where it's not a tough slog to get through but the author can also be forgiven for some aspects being glossed over.
And there were things that I liked and disliked about all the characters.
Congratulations on a great debut!

The Last Petal was an enjoyable read. Immersive and engaging. I found it to be poetic which sometimes felt unnecessary but always helped made the story more vivid and engaging by connecting me to the emotional twists and turns that Regan experienced in this supernatural tale.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect but I couldn’t stop reading. One I love plants and she worked in a plant shop. But who would have thought having a rose granted wishes?! I mean I couldn’t and then people start dying. It’s a must read!

I enjoyed this book this winter over a bottle of wine and loved it. A tragedy written with a very poetic prose. The book could have been longer because I loved reading about Regan and Eydr's journey.

The spicier written scenes were wonderful and left me wanting more. This was a page turner for me and I cannot wait to see what other books this author releases.

The Last Petal by Penelope Knayme tells the story of Regan, a botanist in Montana. Edyr is a god who appears with a magical rose. Regan’s story is one of trauma and her healing. Her journey throughout the novel is one of trying to heal from her trauma.

This book is a quick read, and I thought the story was well paced, building anticipation about Regan’s journey, learning more about Edyr and Hunter. This was the first book I’ve read by Penelope Knayme and I look forward to reading more.
