This is a short, accessible read on the creeds and confessions that helps you understand their purpose and offers a brief history of their origins. Enjoyed it!
It's hard to rate such a short book more than 4 stars, even when the succinctness brings great value, as is the case with this book.
I'm quite familiar with the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed, but I knew little about why or how they formed until reading this book. Reeves makes the (strong) case that these ancient creeds have great value today. They keep believers walking closely to the true gospel, and rejoicing and worshipping God as he has revealed himself to be, rather than a God of our own making.
This short book is packed with wisdom and significance. We have forgotten so quickly the beauty and theological truths that have been put together for the response of the church to God. Out of the word that God has revealed to us there is conviction within creeds and confessions as our response to God in absolute truth of who He is! This book dives into the Nicene creed and the Apostles creed. It has been a a great refreshment to my heart, and a rejuvenator in my spirit to rightly respond to the Lord with the truth of his nature. As well as to respond to the world that whole heartedly rejects God with statements of faith that bring confidence to say “I believe”.
In Guard the Gospel, Michael Reeves writes on the value and treasure of creeds. This brief book excellently explains why the creeds are important and how they still help Christians today.
Hold Fast
I enjoyed reading about the historical background of the Nicene Creed and Apostles’ Creed. Reeves calls Christians to hold fast to our confession, and to declare with confidence what we believe about the God of the Bible.
I received a media copy of Guard the Gospel and this is my honest review. @diveindigdeep
Solid (though too short) introduction to creeds and their importance to the Church. Reeves is a skilled writer, historian, and theologian, and his work continues to be a great resource for all wise enough to read it.
Very helpful overview of two confessions, their historical background and the heresies they were written to combat for a lay person. Definitely a worthwhile read.
