From #1 New York Times bestseller Kresley Cole comes a darkly seductive new series where immortal passion collides with ruthless power.

Beyond the mortal world lies the Skein, a realm of mythic beauty and savage desire ruled by creatures of legend. Here, vampires, witches, demons, and wolves wage war―and hunt their pleasures just as fiercely.

Now, the Accession has begun, an ancient cycle of chaos and destiny that reignites old hostilities and forges fated bonds too hot to resist.

A witch queen on the rise defies the brutal wolf king who stands in her way. But when fate twists their battlefield into a bed of temptation, sworn enemies become something far more perilous. Lovers.

A vampire princess trades her crown for freedom, only to be bound to a scarred Berserker, a man whose possessive touch both terrifies and tempts her.

An incubus spy and a cunning vampiress strike a dangerous bargain for survival, and profit, but lust becomes the one gamble neither expected.

And when a wolf and an enchantress from opposing clans dare to make peace, their forbidden attraction could doom the Skein…or spark a love that defies the gods.

Brimming with intrigue, bloody mayhem, and scorching heat, Ravenous plunges readers into the world of Immortals Untold―where magic kills, surrender triumphs, and immortal hungers can never be sated…

This is VERY different from the usual KC fare, in ways I both liked and didn't.

Bear with me, I have a lot of thoughts so this might get long... also, do NOT open the spoiler tags if you're not prepared to see spoilers, I am being so serious!!! Mild spoilers in the rest of the review too.

So: what we have here in this series is essentially a parallel world to 'Gaia' (i.e. the real world) where the main IAD series is set. It's called the Skein, and it's a bloodthirsty, violent hellhole world made up of all the immortal mythical species we encountered in the IAD series - vampires, berserkers, werewolves, Valkyries and more - with one glaring exception, no humans. The Skein also experiences an Accession every 500 years, when all the various species factions start warring with each other, and those events are just starting as the book begins.

It's immediately apparent as you begin reading that this is a multi-POV book. Each chapter is written in a different perspective, and while most of them are from the main 'recurring' characters (on which more later), some are from peripheral characters. I'm not generally a fan of multi-POV books, but I was able to tolerate it here because at least it's third person; had it been first person I probably would have been out by chapter 3.

Even in third person, there's some initial whiplash, as the reader has to deal simultaneously with getting accustomed to brand-new characters as well as brand-new worldbuilding (although of course, a lot is reprised from IAD). This gets better as the book progresses and you learn who everyone is.

At a very high level, the plot revolves around the following characters/pairings who are POV characters (but more on the romance aspect later too):

Lia: a 22-year-old vampire princess, the only innocent born to the depraved vampire royal family. I initially thought I'd dislike her, and my hopes were certainly not high when I discovered that she's essentially a vampire in name only: she doesn't drink blood AT ALL and doesn't even really have fangs. She ends up in an arranged marriage with...

Arctos: a 40-year-old berserker who hates vampires because they killed his family. To my surprise, the budding friendship between Lia and Arctos, as they move from distrust to respect, became unexpectedly a highlight of the book. One of Arctos's trusted friends and sources is...

Inkletter: an ancient incubus who seduces his targets for information. One of his marks is...

Nadje: a vampire handmaiden and Lia's former servant, who has made a name for herself bartering and smuggling goods throughout the Skein. One ultimate customer of her services is...

Thane: king of the werewolves. 1500 years old, jaded, and devoted to his people's safety, he's both horrified and grateful when he discovers his mate is...

Ditch: half demon, half witch, and the new high priestess of the witches, determined to destroy the werewolves and crush them under her heel. She's plagued by a shy, lovelorn second-in-command who is...

Meera: nerdy and with negligible magical powers, compared to the showy and dramatic Ditch, Meera has stayed a virgin for almost a century - but her resolve is tested by...

Lowell: a charming werewolf and Thane's second-in-command, Lowell hasn't previously felt drawn to the plump witch, but now he's under Meera's spell. Too bad she's not his fated mate, but surely he'll never meet his mate so is free to pursue the pretty witch?

And that doesn't even cover all the POV characters, those are just the central ones!

Some of the characters are much better drawn than others; Ditch for instance shines through, I suspect because KC has form writing characters like her - honestly, she's basically Sabine, who is one of my all-time favourite characters so that's no bad thing. Someone like Inkletter frankly pales in comparison. Which leads me to the observation that, if what you want is good character development, not just a convenient media to convey plot events to the reader, you'd do better to have way fewer main characters and lavish more attention on them. Mathematically speaking, each character/relationship consists of just a fraction of the book, while a standard KC novel devotes all 400 pages to just one couple!

This means that some of the romances were unrealistically turbocharged while others dragged or lacked chemistry because they hadn't had enough attention. The blurb is INCREDIBLY misleading: Arctos does not have a 'possessive touch' for Lia, it's mildly protective at most; 'lust' does not feature as a 'gamble' for Inkletter and Nadje in any meaningful sense; and Meera and Lowell do not by any stretch of the imagination have a 'love that defies the gods.' I'm actually so baffled by these exaggerations (if not outright mistruths) that I've circled round to amused.

Speaking of the romance...

Right, if you're a veteran KC reader, I'm going to cut to the chase now and say something a bit shocking: I enjoyed the plot in this novel MUCH more than I did the romances, and that is also because KC has completely subverted some of the romance here in ways I honestly didn't like. If I am reading what I believe to be a romance novel, I HATE not knowing which character will end up with who; I was the sort of person who rejoiced when reverse harem novels became popular about a decade ago because it meant escape from the torment of the love triangle. I still won't read novels with love triangles, I just can't stand not knowing who the hero will be. And it honestly feels a bit cheap to me when authors play bait and switch with their heroes.

Okay, I've listed the negatives, so what did I like? First of all, the last 20% is GREAT from a purely plot perspective. It's fast-paced, dramatic, and full of twists and action. This definitely felt like the vintage KC which kept me hooked, compared to the weak watered-down versions of her I DNFed (like Mina's book). She absolutely hasn't shied away from portraying blood and gore.

Secondly, the book is genuinely funny in places. There are some good one-liners of the sort it feels KC hasn't written in years. It helps that the writing standard overall is high,

There's also a touch more diversity; the main IAD MCs, from what I recall, are all white, but here we have one Indian main character, a peripheral Japanese one, and even a budding lesbian romance.

Overall

If you go into this one without expecting to love the romance and while prepared for the cliffhanger - basically, read it as a fantasy novel really IMO - you should be good. It's certainly closer to Old KC than her most recent works.
___

Pre-review: Okay. So. This is obviously going straight onto my TBR list, but I'm also like... KC has now been writing the same Immortals After Dark series for almost 20 years, and it's nowhere NEAR completion. The latest books have either (i) taken ages to be released, (ii) featured characters we don't care about, (iii) not been as good as her earlier works, or (iv) all of the above. And now you tell me there's an entirely new spinoff series, when as far as we know there's not even been a title / couple reveal for the next IAD book yet, let alone a release date???

I don’t even know where to start with this book because it honestly had me spiralling in the best possible way. The moment I read that opening line “you’ll have 100 babes in 100 years” I was done for. Like, WHAT DO YOU MEAN??? I knew right then and there that Kresley Cole had me in a chokehold, and unsurprisingly, she did not let up for a single second.

At this point, I will forever and always read anything Kresley Cole puts out into the world, and I can guarantee I’m going to love every second of it. There’s just something about the way she writes that feels effortless but also wildly intricate. This book especially leans into that because the web she’s woven here is honestly maddening in the most compelling, can’t look away kind of way. I wasn’t expecting so many of the characters to be linked together like this, but it made everything feel richer, messier, and way more addictive.

I’ll admit, the multiple POVs took me a minute to adjust to since we usually stick to two in her books, but I can already tell it’s going to pay off in a huge way. It makes the story feel bigger, more chaotic, and honestly a little confusing, but not to the point that it was unenjoyable. I have no idea where this series is going, and that uncertainty is making me enjoy every single second even more. I’m especially curious to see how all of this ties into Immortals After Dark and what threads are being laid here that will shape both the past and the future of that world.

What really stood out to me is how much more deliberate and slower paced this one feels. We’re getting so much backstory, so much context, and so many layers before things fully explode into relationships and overarching plot. And yet, somehow, it’s still ridiculously easy to read. I flew through it without even realising.

The Ascension itself is something I'm already used to as a concept because it is apparent in all of the Immortals After Dark books, but it was already bringing absolute chaos right from the start in this one, and I am loving every second of it. The way it’s throwing characters together, ripping them apart, and completely scrambling the idea of fated mates? Insane. I’m sitting here trying to figure out who is going to end up with who (especially when they are literal mortal enemies), and it’s giving me life. I don't want to give any of the insane plot points away, but it seriously had me rethinking everything I thought I knew about the characters by the time we were done.

Everything goes so wildly, catastrophically wrong. Bonds I thought were being carefully built just snap apart with the arrival of mystery mates, characters are dropping left and right, and Emilia ending up trapped in the crypt with her brother?? I was genuinely sitting there like… are we okay?? I have never known Kresley to do something this maddening, and yet I am eating it up while also screaming because now I have to wait to find out what happens next.

Also, Baylor the Unraveller??? We barely meet him, but the fear surrounding him is so intense that I’m already obsessed. And the lava river being sentient this entire time???? Like it literally becomes a whole sentient character with the very last chapter of the book. The fact that they become an actual character who wants everyone to suffer because a piece of her was taken?? The layers, the chaos, the sheer audacity of it all.

This book feels like a massive setup, and I mean that in the best way possible. You can tell the future books in this series are going to be absolutely unhinged because of how much groundwork is being laid here. It might feel slower in places, but it’s so clearly building toward something huge that I didn’t mind for a second.

Honestly, I finished this both thrilled and slightly feral. I’m obsessed, I’m confused, I’m emotionally compromised and I cannot wait to see where this goes next.

Okay. Here we go, and I hope you stay with me. This will be a bit long.

I have been a Kresley Cole fan for ages and have been reading IAD for almost two decades now. I am saying that not as a flex, but because it absolutely shapes how I read this book. I would really love to hear what newer readers think too, either in the comments or in your own reviews, because I am so curious how this lands if you are not coming in with years of baggage, affection, and opinions like the rest of us.

Like a lot of longtime fans, I was sceptical when Ravenous was announced. Mostly because IAD already feels a little never-ending at this point, even though I will obviously keep reading every single book Kresley puts out. But I am also at the stage where I want older characters to get their stories finished and their arcs tied up, not necessarily yet another whole new set of people to get attached to.

That said... I ended up really liking this.

First, this is a multi-POV book, and that changes the reading experience a lot. Think Throne of Glass in terms of POV structure only. Imagine if Lachlain and Emma, Kaderin and Sebastian, Bowen and Mariketa, and Cade and Holly were all unfolding in the same book at the same time. That is the kind of setup we have here. Which means this feels very different from the usual IAD format, where you more or less know who the couple is, watch them get there, and by the end you get the HEA. That is NOT what this book is doing.

And that took some adjusting.

Because while the world is still very much IAD, the storytelling is different. We are following multiple arcs at once, and by the end we get a cliffhanger instead of a neatly wrapped romance. Since this is meant to be a four book series, that makes sense, but it definitely changes the vibe. By the end, a lot is still up in the air.

This book was also very fast-paced. Things were constantly happening, which honestly helped a lot with such a big cast and so much setup. And the last 20%? Fully unhinged in the best way. So much was happening!!!!

I was also a little worried I would not connect with the characters, because there are already so many people in this universe and, if I am honest, some of the later books have not been the most memorable for me. But I loved this cast.. I have favourites, obviously, but overall I ended up caring about all of them, and I absolutely want to know what happens next!!

And the writing? Excellent. Kresley is a strong writer anyway, but this really reminded me of her older work in terms of quality. I honestly think the traditional publishing side showed here, in a good way. It felt polished, sharp, and very confident. But more than that, it felt extra witty and smart (Valkyrie style;)).

Also, older fans might catch a few little Easter eggs. Nothing too obvious, but enough to make me start forming theories immediately. If you have any, message me, because I would love to compare notes!!!

The worldbuilding and storytelling were both really strong. There is a lot of lore here, and I am very curious how newer readers will process it. I thought the book explained things well without feeling overly repetitive for longtime readers, but it is still A LOT. Almost like getting several IAD books’ worth of lore at once.

So... dare I say it?

I think we might be back!!!!

I am genuinely excited for book 2, and I have not felt this way about an IAD book in a long time. Honestly, the last time I remember feeling this invested was MacRieve.

Which, for me, says a lot.

👁️👄👁️ wtf wtf wtf!!

i got a eARC of this book!! my review is my own.

Part way through reading "Ravenous," I decided that I needed to re-read some of my favorite Immortals After Dark books. So it took me a while to finish Ravenous! I also really didn’t want to finish it!! I kept putting it off because I wanted it to last.

I ended up reading the first thirteen books of IAD and read "A Hunger Like No Other," "Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night," and "Pleasure of a Dark Prince" three times over... I'm currently reading through them again. The hyper-fixation is strong.

~~~
"Ravenous" is an alternate universe to the Immortals After Dark series. It’s grittier, messier, and darker. It’s set in a high fantasy world whereas most of the IAD series is an urban fantasy. I wouldn’t categorize it as a romance, happy ever afters are more complicated for our characters, but it switches between the point of view of four different pairings (mostly. there are occassionally POVs from other characters). I will also say that the marketing I've seen for this book so far is an INJUSTICE. Please do not go into this book thinking it's a romantasy, it feels closer to gothic fantasy?
If you're an IAD fan, I would say that this book is tonally very different. Like I mentioned, I wouldn't call it a romance or romantasy. There are romances, there are many pairs, but most of the relationships are not romantic and there is no guaranteed HEA. Each character is at odds with their counterpoint, there are so many clashing circumstances and personalities. It's interesting to see how the characters work their way through it! Or whether or not they actually can.
I loved this book! I love that Kresley Cole is breathing a new life into the fantastical world that she built over 20 years ago. I love being able to return to something that is completely new! As someone who loves the Lykae stories, having two in one was so perfect for me.
My favorite storyline was Thane and Ditch, the Demon-Witch queen and the Lykae king, but I enjoyed every single POV!
There isn’t much I can say without spoiling the story... but the end of the book had my jaw dropped. I was in shock. I started crying (genuinely) and foaming at the mouth because WHAT DO YOU MEANNNN!!???!?!?!? HUH???? And now I have to wait for the sequel... I’m going to lose my sanity.
I'm fascinated. I'm intrigued. I really don'y know how Kresley Cole plans to continue everyone's story after 6 back-to-back cliffhangers 👁️👄👁️
I was absolutely breathless by the end.
Kresley Cole really looked at her usual “one couple per book” structure and said: what if I gave you a dozen POVs, existential stress, emotional damage, and cliffhangers so violent you’ll stare at the wall afterward?
Because WHAT was this.
This book felt less like one story and more like six books stitched together into one giant supernatural fever dream. We jump between so many perspectives that at some point I genuinely lost count. I swear we even got the POV of a river. A RI.VER.
And yet.
The biggest shift here is that Cole moves away from her classic fated-mates formula and starts exploring unfated pairings too. That was genuinely refreshing and also worked beautifully to reinforce her original mate concept. Ironically, seeing relationships outside the bond made the true fated dynamics feel even more powerful.
And returning to the Immortals lore melted my heart. The Valkyries remain my absolute favorites.
That said, the sheer amount of POV switches came with a cost. Some characters barely had room to breathe, and because the focus was split so widely, I missed the intense tension and spice Kresley usually delivers so effortlessly. The emotional build-up just couldn’t hit the same way when the narrative constantly moved elsewhere.
I also have complicated feelings about Ditch. I almost hate-liked her. She reminded me of Sabine in some ways, but where Sabine had softness hidden beneath the sharp edges, Ditch felt all blade and no warmth. She fascinated me, but I never fully connected with her. It's a shame, she's such a power woman.
Meanwhile, Arctos completely stole my attention and I desperately need an entire book dedicated to him immediately.
Despite the chaos, I devoured this in around 12 hours because once the plot hooks sink in, you cannot escape them. And those cliffhangers are evil. Pure evil. I’ll be worrying about at least two characters until the sequel releases.
Kresley Cole really said “suffering builds character” and handed that suffering directly to the reader. Fortunately I have still some unread books from IAD to sweeten up the waiting time.
Thank you to Kresley Cole, Aria & Aries | Aria, and NetGalley for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Ravenous is the first instalment in a new paranormal romance series, Immortals Untold, from Kresley Cole, a veteran paranormal romance writer (we’re talking Twilight era).
The novel is set in Skein, which is a pocket dimension attached to Gaia (essentially Earth) and contains all manner of different paranormal creatures: vampires, werewolves, berserkers, valkyries, strigoi, ghouls, various types of demons include incubi, etc. The creatures were exiled from Gaia 3000 years ago during the Exile and have lived in Skein ever since.
The book picks up just before the Accession happens, a special event every 500 years in which the creatures fight to win total world domination. Every 3rd Accession, the portal back to Gaia opens for a small window of time.
We follow the main characters in a multiple POV third person perspective. Princess Lia is a vampire princess who is determined to remain as human as possible and escape her brother Costin, who is mad and evil. Inkletter, an incubus, is tricked by Lia’s friend and smuggler Nadja, and delivers Lia to the berserkers, where Lia is then arrange-married to Arctos, a powerful second-in-command. Thane is king of the werewolves and is supported by his second command Lowell. Upon meeting the new High Priestess of the witches, Ditch, a half-witch-half-demon, Thane realises he’s her mate. Lowell is also enamoured with Ditch’s assistant, frumpy, nerdy Meera. Other POVs from Valkyries also surface throughout the book.
PARANORMAL ROMANCE IS SO BACK! I loved this. I did cringe at some points and there were a few plot holes but I also laughed out loud and was squealing at the romance - I really appreciated not making every single pair fated mates. Also loved the overarching plot and the worldbuilding. I’m going to have to devour her backlist now to
As KC mentioned, “the format is different in this series, following several protagonists,” and that’s definitely true. It took a bit of getting used to at first, but once I settled in, it worked.
There’s a lot going on in this book. It’s very much laying the groundwork for a new world and introducing multiple protagonists, so it can feel a bit overwhelming at times. Going in, I’d recommend being prepared to keep track of quite a bit.
The premise itself is really intriguing:
“This new world is what happened when Nïx the Ever Knowing, a Valkyrie soothsayer and one of the most popular characters in the Immortals After Dark series, chose a different path thousands of years ago—one small change that reshaped distant immortal worlds.”
Also:
Welcome to the Skein: a brutal realm where scarce resources spark deadly rivalries between vampires, werewolves, witches, and other mythical creatures, delivering a storm of forbidden love, violent twists, and supernatural shocks. Discover the immortals whose songs have gone unsung as destiny awakens fated bonds and they all must fight for survival.
IMMORTALS UNTOLD is the perfect series for fans of gritty paranormal lore, seasoned with scorching love scenes and jaw-dropping surprises.
I was completely drawn into the story and invested in the characters, even with everything happening. It’s just one of those reads where you have to stay focused.
And that ending—WOW!!!!🤯
Also, it is a cliffhanger, so definitely be ready for that.
I’ll have a more detailed review later, though it might be tricky to go deeper without giving too much away. Overall, very well written.
Kresley Cole is one of my all time fav authors of paranormal/supernatural books. She decided to jump on the Romantasy train and it was a collosal mistake. Huge. This book is an absolute trainwreck. Spoiler free review.
It is told from i think 14/16 different points of view, far too many, like 14 too many. It is based in The Skein an alternative dimension where no humans exist. We have Demons, Witches, demon witches, Beserkers, Valkyries, Werewolves, Vampires and inccubus all living in one dimension and getting along? Every 500 years there is an ascension where they lterally kill each other free and clear and a portal to Gaia aka earth appears every 1500 years.
My main problem is that i didnt like any of the characters at all. We have a whiny vampire princess, a bossy demon witch, a few beserkers, some traiterous queen, a whole bunch of side charcters i didnt give a stuff about, there is no romance here, what i loved about Kreleys writing is that she had one Alpha Male who found their mate and it was i will destroy the whole world for you type vibe, nothing like that in here, you have forced marriage, abuse, incest leanings, and just god awful writing. I honestly have no idea what the editors were thinking letting this be published.
Also, an inccubus with a foot long appendage who moans that his lovers cry, err its a foot long mate, and a demon witch who uses her tail on the rear entrance of her male lover? No thank you.
Sorry Kresley, but i wont be reading the rest of the series. It was tragically bad.
🐺 Enemies to lovers
🩸 Fated mates
🖤 Morally grey characters
💀 Emotional damage
Werewolves. Witches. Valkyries. Vampires. Absolute supernatural carnage. Ravenous is packed with magical creatures and chaotic interwoven plotlines, yet somehow it never feels bloated or overwhelming. Every character, every faction, every POV mattered.
The multi-POV setup definitely had me scrambling at first because I kept asking myself, “okay but WHO is the main character?” Answer: all of them. And honestly, it works really well.
Every time we switched perspectives I was internally screaming “NOOOO TAKE ME BACK” not because the next storyline was boring, but because every single one had me completely hooked. There are genuinely no filler plotlines here. Everyone brought main character energy and every POV had me stressed, invested, or emotionally spiralling at some point.
This book repeatedly lulled me into a false sense of security before absolutely wrecking me with plot twists. Every time I thought I knew where things were heading, Kresley Cole pulled the chair out from under me… then proceeded to beat me over the head with it for good measure.
And cliff hanger? No, that ending was less of a cliff hanger and more of a full shove off the cliff. I’ll be impatiently waiting for the next instalment.
(ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley; opinions are my own.)
Well that was unexpected - in a good way! I'm a long time KC fan so I was thrilled to get this ARC.
This book was very different yet similar at the same time to earlier IAD books. The Lore beings are all there with their various factions. This is an alternate realm and there are no humans. Its a rugged land with fire rivers and evil creatures and food is scarce. The Lore beings were exiled to this realm and that's not explained too much, but not needed to enjoy the story. The Accession is actually starting for these characters and all kinds of chaos is afoot.
There are multiple potential pairings and multiple POV characters. I wouldn't even call it a romance, more like a darker fantasy with romantic elements that also has some spice, humor, shenanigans, and gore.
It took me awhile to get used to the different POVs and the events going on, but once I settled in and got my bearings things really started to develop. The last third of the book had me hooked. This is not a self contained story. You will not find any HEAs at the end of this book. Instead, each character is left in their own cliff hanger moment. Think of it like a season finale for a TV show and know you can't wait for the next season.
I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of this series!
Ravenous by Kresley Cole
Immortals Untold Book One
Initial thoughts when seeing all those different names on the chapters title on the contents page, I knew there was going to be a lot going on.
It took me awhile to keep track of everyone, but we got there. Long term Kresley Cole fan and this did not disappoint.
I absolutely loved this ‘darker’ Immortals After Dark adjacent world. I enjoyed all the characters we met and as we get closer to the end of this instalment, I was way too invested and the story took turns that I wasn’t ready for.
The last 25% of this book had me on the edge of seat; brought on so much emotion and I can’t wait for the rest of this series.
Preordered the audiobook can’t wait for Robert Petkoff to put this in my ears.
Thanks to NetGalley, Aria & Aries, and Kresley Cole for the ARC, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
I devoured this book.... savored it. And then when I finished, all I craved was another taste! I still couldn't tell you what faction I loved more. Every faction was a simmering pot of delight. This story is epic and delicious. It will leave readers craving more. Kresley Cole delivered some tempting writing. This felt like a whole meal with all your favorite dishes. I am still reeling from this story and all I can think now is......WHEN CAN I GET THE NEXT ONE!!
Okey so l'm confused does this mean IAD is cancelled/on hold indefinitely. I wish we would have gotten one last book at least just to close the series. It's been frustrating to wait so long for alot of the characters that the books were building towards. To now get a spin off of random characters in a whole different timeliness.
Ooof Kresley Cole has done it again. I’m utterly sucked into her magical, devastating world of witches, demons, vampires, werewolves and more there are many many POVs in this one but stick with it and the pay off is worth it in my opinion. High stakes, compelling, and spicy, I’m already desperate to return to this series. I highly recommend for fans of her Immortals After Dark series, Nalini Singh & Jeaniene Frost.
