Dark Sky #2

Wings of Fate

Rate this book
After months in exile, Zaydah is back in Vulcanis. Though, as far as punishments go, uninterrupted time travelling with her best friends wasn’t so hard to bear. But returning to Vulcanis carries its own problems. Her association with Brev will easily brand her as a traitor. Her closeness with him is well known, as is his betrayal.

She’ll need to earn back her captain’s trust, but even more important will be the prince’s. Zaydah has no desire to be near Prince Aris, but she can’t deny the continual draw of him. The pull to become his Shield is strong but impossible, all at the same time. The tie between them would become irrevocable. She’ll do anything to maintain her freedom and not be bound to him for life. So why does it bother her that he’s as against the bond as she is?

Far more dangerous and threatening are the messages that arrive from Brev. She’s supposed to be on a straight and narrow path, never toeing the line of deceiving her captain, but she’s in a better position than anyone to discover what Brev is doing with the Tiberians.

Fate can’t be denied, but if Zaydah keeps too many secrets, she could lose everything.

3.5/5.0

This second installment of a series seemed written for more of a YA audience, with the reactions and attitudes of the characters firmly on the teenage side. That’s not a complaint, just an observation for those deciding to read. For me, it kind of went around in circles a bit and spent most of the story without a whole lot of forward movement, with most of the focus on Zaydah and Aris continuing to circle each other while denying their attraction. In fact, this story sat firmly in the three star column, until the last 20% of the book. That’s when everything really picked up, raced forward and kept me biting my nails and turning the pages.

SOPE… the last part of the book made the book absolutely worth reading. Just wished a bit more forward movement in both plot and relationships had happened before that.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 to be be fully accurate, but I rounded up. Wings of Fate continued to developed the characters relationships and the plot. Just when I think I have something figured out, Ella throws me for a loop (in the best way!) The slow burn tension between Zay and Aris had me on the edge of my seat. I loved getting more glimpses of Group 14 and the initiate group. I love the found family in this series!!! I am obsessed with the inclusion of Prince Lucca and his storyline. I can’t wait to know more about the “powers” and the Shield Bond. So many good things have been hinted at for book three.

The cliffhanger, I mean I have no words! What are you doing to us Ella…

I received an ARC copy and am leaving my honest review.

Zaydah is on her way back to Vulcanis after her year of monitored assignments after what happened with Brev and the revelations he brought. She is ready to be home, be with her initiate group, and to move forward. Battles are coming and Zaydah knows that her and Valentius will be needed. What she didn't expect was to be placed in a precarious situation immediately once she returned. Captain Felix knows that Brev is obsessed with Zaydah and wants to use her to try and get information from him. There is little to no information about what Brev and Rainer are planning or even where they are. They know this is a dangerous game of using her to bait him after rumors of her being a traitor were just quieted. This mission has been sanctioned by Princess Aurelia and the reports will be going to Prince Aris as well, someone she rather avoid at all costs due to the Shield bond they are trying to deny. But as she integrates herself back to life in Vulcanis and working for her sponsor she becomes more intertwined with the royal family and starts to uncover dark secrets.

From the start we see that Zaydah learned her lesson but also didn't. When she almost immediately did a dumb thing I just wanted to yell at her. But then she did redeem herself slightly including others, using the support system she has, and recognizing the dumb actions. We get some clues to the past that are affecting the now and future. I have theories about what really happened between Zaydah, Aris, and Brev's fathers. There is still too much that needs to be uncovered from the past before I can start really having solid theories about the present. We start to see what is locked behind Aris’ ice and why that is. The royal family is an interesting bunch and you know there will be a lot to uncover with them. Lucca definitely seems like the opposite of Aris in personality but he has seen his share of ugly as well. There is development between Zaydah and Aris with both needing to understand each other before any true progress can be made. This installation of the series adds depth and mystery to what is truly going on and ends on a cliffhanger ending that made me stare into the void needing answers immediately.

Book 2 was everything I hoped for and more! Zaydah's draw with Aris is deliciously powerful still in this book...a true slow burn that hooks me. I would love to see a novella of Aris' POV one day. 😉

In this book, we see the little prince Lucca join the character mix quite boldly. Zaydah's mentor like relationship with the youngest prince is so sweet! He is so different from his brother that I can't help but adore his little brother character.

Valentinus and Claudius were both ever present again in this book and had me chuckling quite a few times. I'm glad the author kept the humor intertwined in this story. I'm also glad we got to see more of Val's personality and connection growth with Zaydah in this book.

Car was an unexpected character addition but is extremely interesting and adds a layer of mystery and curiosity to the whole story. I can't decide still if I like or dislike him, but his interactions always have me on edge.

I thought the ending in Book 1 left me reeling, but oh no, this cliffhanger had me gasping for air! I cannot wait for Book 3!

Thank you to the author for the ARC opportunity! I am honored to have been chosen for an honest review. This series has stolen my heart and I am trying my best to anxiously wait the release of each sequel.

The yearning, the tension, the interactions… they were exactly what I needed from book two. This series has become the slowest of slow burns and the chemistry between Zaydah and Aris is absolutely perfection.

This book is chock full of character development, dynamic development, plot development, and overall character strength. Zaydah is building in her confidence and healing, honing her skills and proving herself. She knows where her loyalties lie and now… so does everyone else.

From the first page to the last line I was on deep. I couldn’t stop turning the page to know where it would go next. We have character additions, and characters that play bigger roles, that complement the overall plot building perfectly.

Wings of Night had my interest peaked but Wings of Fate left me with my jaw on the floor begging for the next book NOW!!!!! That plot twist/cliffhanger is pure torcher!!!

LUCCA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you to the author for the ARC and the continued opportunity to read her work!!

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This was another installment in an amazing series that absolutely did not disappoint. While this book was mildly less action packed than the first, it doesn’t mean it is any less important.

As Zaydah returns from her time away, she finds herself even more embroiled in court politics with little understanding of how it works and navigating sticky relationships within the royal family. Her friends do their best to support her through her time, but even with their support missteps are bound to happen. Learning more about Aris and Zaydahs complex dynamics, the strategy behind Brev’s betrayal, and even more insight into Zaydah’s found family, this book will have your mind constantly trying to figure out where it is headed next. Not everyone should be trusted, and Zaydah is going to find out why.

As per usual, this book ends on a cliffhanger that begs so many questions they’ll be rolling around my mind until I can get my hands on the next installment!

Fate, Freedom, and the Bonds That Bind

Wings of Fate delivers everything I wanted in a sequel and more. Zaydah's return to Vulcanis after her exile is fraught with tension, suspicion, and the kind of emotional complexity that makes for an unputdownable read. Her association with Brev, the traitor who betrayed them all, hangs over her like a dark cloud, and earning back trust becomes her most pressing challenge.

The relationship between Zaydah and Prince Aris is the beating heart of this story 💗. Their connection is magnetic, yet both fight against the Shield bond that would tie them together permanently. Zaydah treasures her independence and refuses to be bound to anyone, even as destiny pulls her inexorably toward him. What makes their dynamic so fascinating is that Aris resists just as strongly, creating a delicious tension that crackles through every scene they share. The question isn't whether they'll give in, but when and at what cost.

Brev's continued presence, conveyed through cryptic messages, adds a layer of danger and moral ambiguity that elevates the story. 📨 Zaydah knows she should remain loyal and transparent, but she's in the perfect position to uncover what he's plotting with the Tiberians. This puts her in an impossible situation, where every choice feels like a betrayal of someone she cares about. The internal conflict she experiences rings true and makes her character easy to connect with.

The world of Vulcanis is vividly realized 🏔️. Henderson has created a setting that feels alive, with secret dealings, ancient mysteries, and a culture that values strength and loyalty above all else. The friendships Zaydah shares with her companions provide warmth and humor, balancing the darker elements of the plot. The tight-knit group she relies on is one of my favorite aspects of this series.

What impressed me most is how Henderson explores the theme of chosen path versus predetermined destiny without making it feel preachy or heavy-handed ⚖️. Zaydah's struggle to hold onto her independence while forces beyond her control close in creates real tension. The pacing is excellent, with moments of quiet introspection balanced by action, clever maneuvering, and romantic tension.

The emotional depth of this book surprised me. Zaydah's fear of losing herself to the bond is palpable, and her determination to forge her own path makes her a protagonist worth rooting for. The chemistry between her and Aris builds slowly, which makes every moment they share feel earned and significant.

Henderson's writing is sharp and engaging, with dialogue that feels natural and characters who leap off the page. The secrets Zaydah keeps threaten to destroy everything she's working to rebuild, and watching her navigate this treacherous path is both thrilling and heartbreaking. The ending will leave you desperate for the next book 🔥.

This is the second book in the Dark Sky series, and it builds on the foundation established in Wings of Night. If you love fantasy with strong character development, complex relationships, and heroines who refuse to be defined by destiny alone, this book is for you. Fans of Fourth Wing and Fear the Flames will find much to love in Zaydah's story.

Henderson continues to prove herself as a master of character-driven epic fantasy. Wings of Fate is a triumph of emotional storytelling, scheming and secrets, and slow-burning romance. The next book can't come soon enough ✨.

Thank you to Ella Walker Henderson (As always) for the gifted copy of this incredible book. I was happy to leave my honest opinion.

Book 2 was such a fun, addictive read, but WOW this slow burn is still slooooowly burning. Ella Walker Henderson, why must you hurt me like this?! 😩🔥

If you have not heard of this character driven dragon rider fantasy yet, let me put it on your radar immediately. Yes, it has dragons and dragon riders 🐉🔥 but what really sold me is the FMC. Zaydah is not noble born, and that made me love her even more. Her grit, heart, and unshakable determination to fight for what she believes in are genuinely inspiring. 💪🖤 The world building is immersive without being overwhelming, making this one of those just one more chapter books that keeps you up way too late. 🌙📖

The core conflict in this installment hits hard. Zaydah’s oldest friend is now on the opposite side, forcing her into recon missions that stir up old wounds, unresolved feelings, and impossible choices. 😭 Add in a king who may or may not be worthy of loyalty, and suddenly the question becomes where does Zaydah truly belong? 👑❓

As for the romance, it is a whole lot of will they or will not they agony. 😮‍💨 They are still not together, which hurts, but they are bonded in a very special way and that is all I am saying. ✨ I absolutely kicked my feet when it happened.

One of my absolute favorite elements continues to be the found family. 🖤 I adored every side character, especially Group Fourteen and you will understand the obsession once you read. 💕 I also loved seeing Prince Lucca, Aris’s younger brother, step into a bigger role. And that cliffhanger was absolutely rude. 😤

🙌 The good news is that Book 3 releases next month and this is a planned five book series all coming out this year so the wait will not be brutal. 🎉

If Ella Walker Henderson is not already on your TBR, consider this your official sign to add her immediately 📚✨🐉.

Wings of Fate
By Ella Walker Henderson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tropes:
* Enemies to Lovers
* Found Family
* Slow Burn
* Heroine's Journey
* Chosen Duo's Quest
* Dragon Riders
Wings of Fate is an exhilarating and emotional follow-up in the Dark Sky series, and it completely solidifies Ella Walker Henderson as a powerhouse in the romantasy genre! Picking up after the high-stakes introduction of book one, this sequel takes us deeper into the heart of the sky-bound kingdom. The atmospheric world-building remains top-notch, with the bond between riders and their dragons feeling more visceral and essential than ever before. Henderson has a magical way of balancing intense, dragon-riding action with deeply personal character growth that kept me glued to the pages.
The character dynamics in this installment are truly where the story shines, especially with the further development of Zaydah. Her grit and determination to fight for what she loves are inspiring, and seeing her navigate the complex web of secrets and betrayal in this book was heart-wrenching. We also get more of the "Group Fourteen" squad—the found family element is executed to perfection, making every secondary character feel essential and lived-in. The banter is sharp, and the budding romantic tension is a masterclass in the slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers trope that will have fans of the first book cheering.
This book perfectly executes the "middle book" of a series by raising the stakes and leaving us with plot twists that make it impossible to know who to trust. If you love immersive epic fantasy with a strong female lead and a touch of "burn down the world" energy, this is an absolute must-read. Henderson has set the stage for an incredible finale, and I am already counting down the days until the release of Wings of Darkness in March!

10/10 Would recommend this book to all family and friends.

What you will find in this book:
* Enemies to Lovers with the slowest of slow burns
* Found Family
* FMC finding her own strength
* Dragons

I feel like a lot of times in series the second book doesn’t measure up to the first, however in this book was just as good as the first. The amount of unprecedented twists and turns that are leading into the next book have me in the edge of my seat.

From the start of this book to the end, the action and development was non-stop. It immediately takes you right back into story where book one ended.

This book follows Zayduh in her second year of being an Aeros after her banishment to the north and a secret assignment.

The depth of development with the characters ,specifically of Zayduh, from the first book and relationships continuing to evolve was astounding and is truly magnified in this book. Zayduh is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite FMCs with her wit and ability to morph and adjust to every challenge thrown at her. I enjoyed introduction Car and look forward to see what further roles and twists he will bring into play.
There is the right amount of banter, humor and seriousness. Group 14 and Valentius are still some of my favorite characters.

The slowest and slow burns and what little bit the author gave us when it finishes simmering, it is going to ghost pepper hot. I honestly don’t know if I want to strangle or kiss Aris half the time

At this time I don’t know who I dislike more: Brev and his delusions and mind games or the Crown Prince with his political manipulations, threats and secrets

And the piece de resistance for me was the epic one sentence ending that has me reeling and needing the next book now. Seriously. That plot twist was diabolical.

Thank you for the privilege of being an ARC reader

Palace Politics has nothing on Training-ground Troubles
We pick up with Zaydah’s continuing to steer clear of her prince whilst still being enticed under the spell of his magnetism. I wanna say that I’m feelin’ some frost from Aris, but the distraction caused by their growing mutual enthrallment heats up the camp more than any bonfire could ever do. Tempers flare as they combat their conflicting feelings and struggle to define just what this unmistakable intensity means for them, their divisions, and for the kingdom they both serve.

For me, this sequel really depicts an assortment of relationships:
*Zaydah receives some sage advice: ‘Regardless of your past with Brev, you can work against him, and regardless of your conflict with Aris, you can work with him.’ That simple, eh?
*That Bastius does have some skills…he is quite the talented mediator. Maybe I could bribe him to be present anytime I had a conflict with Aris.
*As the younger son and youngest child, Lucca has a lot more freedom than do his two siblings. He carries less weight on his shoulders, so seems most eager to join his fellow Aeros in all aspects of soldiering. He’s a welcome addition to Zaydah’s circle of friends as well as to her professional network.
*Variety is not merely the spice of life, but rather a key survival strategy. Have friends and connections among diverse groups as each person will have something special to offer, including yourself. Our Zaydah benefits from members of the royal family all the way down to the common foot soldiers and at almost every rank in between. By belonging to none, she has the freedom to navigate them all. And by association, she can provide for her close-knit crew. Alas, this can end up being a double-edged sword…

‘May we all serve [our families, our communities, and our nations] better together than apart.’

I’m literally chomping at the bit to continue with this saga of struggles in ‘Wings of Darkness’ then ‘Wings of Ruin’.

What a book. What a story!

I've been binging it in every moment i could spare. Since the first one I wanted to know more about Zaydah's path and how her new role as an Aeros would lead her and Valentius into this future. And I'm glad to say that this sequel did not disapoint! I liked it even more!

We see Zaydah grow, with the help from her friends and we see her become more each day. She keeps proving herself and showing that she is special and deserves respect.
Although, in between her learning we see her struggling to avoid Aris and their bond. But no matter how much they fight... they keep getting closer. How will they manage it you ask? Ohh, it's good to find them battling their feelings and let me say....losing!
I absolutly loved seeing Zaydah and Valentius relationship grow closer. He honestly behaved like her protective big brother and I've loved it!
I also enjoyed returning to Group fourteen and to her inniciate Attilan group. Claudius was a very good surprise in this group. His sense of humor had me laughing several times. I also loved how close the whole group was towards one another. This found family vibe grew even stronger in this second book. I hope it stays this way in the next ones.

There are some plot twists, mainly in the end. The last third of the book is much more fast paced, and so much happens. I did not see any of them comming. Yeahh. I can say I was buldozed at the end!
I'm still a little speachless (and heartbroken) by that cliffhanger. How was that possible? I thought that that character had more story to be told, but this?? Really? I can't help to say I'm a little sad (I liked this character..)

I need to know more!!

Wings of Fate by Ella Walker Henderson

5/5 stars

Want to be gripped into a ‘I don’t want to put this down because I need to know what will happen next’ ? Then this is a book series for you! Wings of Fate is book 2, following on from Wings of Night by Ella Walker Henderson.

After spending months of being exiled to the north, Zaydah is on her way back to Vulcanis where she will face a whole new set of problems. Her close relationship with Brev marks her a possible traitor after his betrayal in book 1. So not only is she trying to show everyone she’s her own person and doesn’t support the decision Brev made, she also has to earn back the trust of two important people in her life, Captain Felix and Prince Aris. The later of whom she cannot deny she shares a connection with and the pull to get closer and closer to him and become his Shield has become.

Throughout this book we get to dive deeper and see even more interaction with Group 14. As well as the growth of Zaydah with her friend group and how they take Prince Lucca in when his decision ruffles feathers with his royal family.

I squealed, celebrated, shouted and laughed all throughout this book as it took me on a rollercoaster of emotions annnnd then I was left on the BIGGEST cliffhanger again. Having to stare off into the abyss after to try process what I had just read was a struggle and as soon as book three is released I’m gonna have to cancel everything just to read it asap! I need answers!!

I am quickly becoming an Ella Walker Henderson fan! Thank you for the opportunity to read these books.

(Received a complimentary early copy, but this has no influence on my enjoyment and review)

A splendid sequel to Wings of Night!

I think one of my favorite parts of the Dark Sky series are the personalities and relationships. The camaraderie and support of Group Fourteen warm my heart! Valentinus still is both sassy and genius, of course. And Claudius, well, he’s still Claudius *facepalm* 😀

Once again, Henderson reminds us that all the royal family members have different personalities, leading to different interactions with Zaydah. Lucca (I mean who doesn’t love Lucca!) looks up to her, Aris appears to hate her (although everyone knows he doesn’t), and the sister supports Zaydah while letting her make her own path.

One note: I thought the characters called Aris the crown prince in book 1, which is why when they call his father the crown prince in this novel, I grew confused. But that’s probably just me not having a good memory, haha! 😀 Aris is the future Crown Prince, whenever his father becomes king. 🙂 A quick reminder on who is who can be found at the end of the book, though.

I found the book started off a little slow as the main characters spent a couple chapters rehashing the destined bond between Zaydah and Aris, but then it really picks up once again to the drama and excitement that we have come to expect from Henderson. The manipulation by Brev and Aris are top notch, and we really see Zaydah’s emotional growth. And then the ending!!!!

I am stoked to read book 3. It can’t come soon enough!!

This book picked off with Zaydah’s punishment for her rendezvous with Brev. It then continued on with her journey throughout her second year as an Aero (dragon riders) all while attempting to regain the trust she lost. It was exciting and kept me at the edge of my seat throughout the whole story. I absolutely loved seeing the brotherly vibes coming from Claudius. In this book you get to see Zaydah develop her relationships more and I personally found this to be some of my favorite moments (Claudius, Valentius, Group 14, and some of the others as well). Ella (the author) makes you feel like you know what is coming next but then throws something else at you. For me, chapter 36 was one of those moments.

Pros:
There is more Claudius top tier humor throughout the book. The tension…the slow burn…it is agonizingly good. You get to see the relationships with the other characters build more.

Cons:
There is a cliffhanger at the end and it is not a completed series yet (as of December 2025) so if you don’t like waiting then I would recommend waiting until it’s fully published. However, once it is I highly recommend a read!
There is no MMC pov but that is probably for the best. That being said, I would not argue against some MMC pov bonus chapters.

Thank you to the author and her team for letting me be an arc reader. This is my honest review after reading book 1 and the arc copy of book 2.

I would like to thank Ella and her team for including me in the ARC read for this book. It was fantastic! I couldn't stop reading it and yet I kept taking breaks because I didn't want it to end!

The story picks up with Zaydah returning from her disciplinary assignment in the north. She is ready to help fight against the Tiberians and to try to figure out what Brev and his father are trying to do. She spends time with her initiate group researching the history of the country and trying to find out what her father may have known concerning Brev's father and his experimentation with the dragons. She becomes friends with the younger prince, Lucca, and he starts training with her and Group 14. I really enjoyed when Zaydah is told she will be training with Aris. They decide that training together may help them get over their issue of getting caught in each other's gaze. He does not go easy on her, and I loved that she was able to learn and grow in her training with him. Unfortunately, all this attention from him gets her noticed by the Crown Prince and he is not happy. I like how this seemed to bring out a protective side of Aris, even though Zaydah didn't seem to notice. There is a lot of slow burn and yearning in this book. It was fantastic! The cliffhanger was a gut punch and it's going to KILL me waiting for book 3!

Ella has done it again! Another one that I just could not put down and threw my hands up when I got to the end. Zaydah is back from a yearlong assignment, her punishment for her meet up with Brev in the first book. She gets back to training with Group 14, the group that took on her training when she first arrived and are now more like a bunch of brothers to her along with Claudius who is also a fellow Aeros. She meets Prince Aris’s brother Prince Lucca who is also folded in with Group 14 and who sees a little more into how her and Prince Aris are drawn together. This is a slow burn romance that you know will eventually burn hot when it comes to Zaydah and Prince Aris as they try to work the puzzle of their growing bond against what either of them wishes. Zaydah is still dealing with the betrayal of Brev and now has to covertly get information from him without everyone know what is really going on while learning more of what he and his father are building, Then the unthinkable happens that both she and Prince Aris has tried to avoid, he claims her to be his shield and she excepts due to the alternative – the first female shield. We then left with a cliffhanger that I can’t wait to see what happens when Zaydah wakes up.

I’m giving this book 3.8 stars, but I do think this second installment was weaker than the first. Overall, it felt a bit rushed. The slow-burn romance finally pays off, which I enjoyed, but at the same time the book introduces several complex topics that aren’t fully explored. For example, the war is still a big part of the story, yet it remains oddly vague, and Zaydah’s meetings with Brevain felt slightly forced to me. Also, some emotional moments felt a little too teenager (like, as if the characters don’t really sit with or process their feelings).
Although we follow Zaydah closely, I really missed having other points of view. Many side characters are introduced quickly but then don’t get enough “screen time,” which made them feel a bit forgotten. There’s clearly a lot happening in the background, and understanding other characters’ motivations would have added much more depth. Plus, I wanted to know more about Aurelia and would have loved a POV from Aris (hope to see it in book 3).
That said, I flew through this book and am definitely on the edge of my seat for the next one. Ending the story on such a cliffhanger was cruel in the best way (I always knew Lucca was shady). Despite its flaws, I’m invested and curious to see where the story goes next.

This is hands down one of my top five reads of the year! Zaydah is back from her northern assignment and is finally reunited with her friends and group 14. She unfortunately hasn't outrun her strange pull to the future prince nor has his anger at her subsided. Zaydah is determined to do what's necessary, with Valentius as her mount and her friends at her back to finally take some control and fight for her country.

I really love Zaydah and her strong spirit. She took some control of her actions, which was great to see. Group 14 is still the fantastic found family brothers that I loved from book one and support her no matter what. Her initiate friends had big moments in this book too and the author did a fabulous job weaving in additional stories. The author does a fantastic job with her bread crumbs throughout the story yet I was still shocked. She also brought me to tears in a few spots with the strong emotions that the characters went through, just amazing writing. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.

As an ARC reader, I loved Wings of Fate, especially how much deeper the bond grows between the main character and her dragon. Their relationship feels more intimate, more trusting, and more emotionally grounded in this book. Watching them learn from each other, rely on each other, and truly become a team was one of my favorite parts of the story and made the dragons feel even more meaningful.

The dragons continue to be a central force, not just background fantasy elements. They, along with all the other riders, actively shape the plot, and the stakes— which, as a dragon lover, is exactly what I want in a fantasy series.

The story builds beautifully on the first book with higher tension, deeper emotions, and a growing sense that everything is moving toward something massive. The pacing kept pulling me forward, and I constantly found myself saying, “Just one more chapter.”

And then… that ending.

I genuinely turned the page expecting more — expecting the rest of the story — only to realize the book was over. The cliffhanger is huge and absolutely ruthless. Ella Walker Henderson clearly knows how to leave her readers hanging in the best (and most frustrating) way possible.

If you love dragons that actually matter, fantasy worlds with escalating stakes, and endings that make you desperate for the next book, Wings of Fate delivers. I need book three immediately.

ARC Reader Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ella has done it again, did I know when I started this journey that Ella was going to quickly become my favorite Author? No.
Am I mad about it? Also, No.

The beginning of book 2 has a slower start than book 1 but honestly it was perfect. We needed to see how that year away made Zaydah grow and mature. I also loved the slow build to the chaos that was about to unfold on her life. I constantly had butterflies waiting to find out what more would be discovered.

As always I love the banter between characters and that friendship between Z and Claud had me giggling more than I care to admit ☺️

Then there’s the tension between Prince Aris and Zaydah 🔥 are you kidding me?! *chef’s kiss*

I cannot say enough good things about this book and I’m not sure I can even put into words how much I enjoy this series so far.

However, I’m still mad about that plot twist cliffhanger. I flipped the page back and forth at least 7 times exclaiming “NO! You can’t end it like that!!!” 😅

Ella and Team, thank you for including me in the ARC Reader team, forever grateful for the opportunity❤️

I was lucky enough to be chosen as an ARC reader for this book. I devoured the first and I think I read this second book even quicker. You don't always love the second in a series as much as the first, but in this case I absolutely did. There is continued character growth, in multiple characters and in their relationships. I love Zaydah's relationship with Valentius, and how her bond with him is unique. The story flowed really well and here were no Grammer or spelling issues. I felt emotionally invested in this book, it made me smile, laugh and cry. I even got angry/frustrated a few times with the MC. I love Zaydah, she's a BA- but there were times where I was like girl, just why? I love that the author gives you enough information to get you thinking, but still is able to drop bombshells you aren't expecting. There is a cliff hanger, but the next book comes out in a few months I believe- so worth the read since the wait won't be to long. Themes: found family, fantasy, slow burn romance. This is not a romance with some fantasy, it's a fantasy with some romance- at least in my opinion.

That cliffhanger though… 😱

I absolutely loved the slow burn between Zaydah and Aris. I knew he had feelings for her, and watching that tension build was so satisfying. Group 14 continues to be a highlight for me, especially with Lucca joining in. Their constant teasing of Zaydah about Aris and his very obvious reactions to her had me laughing every time 😂

Lucca had me intrigued from the start. He seems genuinely kind and open, but he is a royal. Even if he is distant from his family, I cannot help but think he is more cunning than he lets on.

And now I have questions. Who is feeding Brev insider information? Are all the Chrystha aligned with him and Rainer? How much further will Aris and Zaydah’s relationship develop? What role will Zaydah’s deal with Car play now, especially with her new position? Will we finally learn how her father fits into Rainer’s plans? And what was Flavius about to reveal after the battle?

I am left with even more questions than answers and am impatiently counting down until March!

Huge thank you to Ella for the ARC of both books. I cannot wait to see where this story goes next!

I was lucky enough to read an ARC of book two in this series and let me just say, it understood the assignment and then chose violence at the end.

This book did not disappoint. The chemistry between Zaydah and Aris is absolutely unhinged in the best way and somehow manages to be the slowest slow burn known to mankind. Every glance, every almost moment had me screaming internally, pacing my house and questioning my patience as a reader.

The world building is just as rich and immersive as book one and I loved that Zaydah continues to keep her friendships intact because saving the world is great but emotional support besties are essential.

And that ending? The cliffhanger came out of nowhere and hit me like a truck. I genuinely sat there asking myself how I did not see that coming. I am personally offended, emotionally compromised and now stuck waiting for book three.

If you loved book one, buckle up. This one will have you laughing, yelling and side-eyeing the final page. Book three cannot come soon enough.

Zaydah is back after completing her disciplinary field assignments in exile. She must earn the trust of her captain and the prince, but she gets entangled in intrigues. The slow-burn romance between Zaydah and the prince starts to grow, as does her relationship with her creature, Valentius, but so do the secrets that Zaydah is keeping. Will she be labeled a traitor if the secrets are found out? It ends on a nail-biting cliffhanger!

Ella Walker Henderson writes compelling characters, clever plots, vivid worlds, and intense action scenes. The romance is slow-burn with low spice. I love all of EWH’s stories, but the Dark Sky series is my favorite!

Here's my favorite quote from Wings of Fate:
Lucca was a warm, gentle breeze on a summer afternoon. Aris was the freezing howl of a winter night. How could two brothers be so opposite? Why did I miss the presence of the one who would make me so cold?
So cold, and yet he burned so bright.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

Book two of the Dark Sky series, Wings of Fate, continues on its thrilling journey.

Returning from her year long exile, Zaydah is ready to return to the Aeros camp and prove her trust and her worth to the rest of the riders and captains. The only complication is with Prince Arias and the hypnotic connection they have.

Prince Arias, on the other hand, is doing everything he can to avoid this connection, convinced she is untrustworthy just as her childhood friend Brev is.

The connection and slow burn between the two is entirely worth the wait.

I absolutely love the found family Zay has with her initiate group and group 14. The teasing and commentary and jokes brings such a light to the book that i wholeheartedly enjoy. Her bond with Valentius is everything, his grumpy but protective nature completes the whole dynamic.

I cannot wait for the next book, especially after the cliffhanger the author left us on!

“I’m sorry, Zaydah” The whisperer of an apology that leads to an unforgivable betrayal.

Wings of Fate picks up from where Wings of Night ended with Zaydah returning from her mission being welcomed home by her friends and brothers of group 14. The excitement to know what happens when Aris and Zaydah meet again after months of separation is soon revealed when they are once again brought together at a dinner party.

Tensions flare, jealousy is potent, new information comes with more questions that have yet to be answered, an attraction that is forbidden yet can’t be extinguished that only grows and intensifies, a special unique bond with a creature that has a thirst for glory that will willingly give it all up for his rider and her safety, an old love that has cost her so much and is far from over, and a strong united family that doesn’t need blood to be stronger then ever.

The Shield bond will be tested. How far does her unique bond with her creature really go to locate her? Will those that care about her truly stop at nothing to find her? New twist, turns, and information about the past, present, and future awaits raising suspicion of those in line for the throne. Will love burn bright or be extinguished?

I can’t say enough how much I loved this book. It has everything packed in between the pages. Excitement, laughter, a slow burn, unity, unanswered questions, possibilities, suspense, betrayal, and makes you eager for more. One of my favorite reads of 2025. Pick up your copy today, trust that you will not be able to put it down. Better start on your weekend or you will be calling in “sick” to work as Ella does a fantastic job pulling her readers in leaving them only wanting more.

A masterclass in slow burn, power, and consequence

This book excels at layered tension. The connection between Zaydah and Aris is immediate yet restrained, charged without being rushed, and woven into the story’s political and magical structures rather than standing apart from them. The Shield dynamic adds depth instead of convenience, especially as Zaydah navigates a role never meant for her, in a system that wasn’t built with women in mind.

The political intrigue is sharp and increasingly suffocating, with alliances, betrayals, and quiet manipulations that make every interaction feel loaded. Characters from earlier threads cast long shadows, and even when they aren’t on the page, their presence is felt. Nothing is forgotten. Nothing is easy.

Ella balances action, worldbuilding, and emotional tension with precision, delivering a slow burn that actually moves, and a cliffhanger that is both devastating and earned.

March feels cruelly far away 😭

Ella did a great job in the continuation of the Dark Sky series!
While this sequel started off a little slower than the previous book in this series we got to explore Zaydah’s growth after her first year as an aero and get a better look at the relationships she has made through here journey as well of how she is dealing with the fall out of her and Bree. We also get to experience this strange bond shared between Zaydah and Prince Aris and see a little bit more of how it affects them as well as all of the romantic tension that surrounds it.
After reading this book I almost feel like Ella is using this book as a set up for so much more to come. I really didn’t see it coming but it ended on a huge plot twist cliffhanger that now has me holding my breath waiting to see what will happen next.
Well done Ella, I cannot wait for book 3 to come out!
