The Light Between Us

Rate this book
Lila "The Siren" sings in Nightspire's most upscale brothel, where her voice doesn't just entice, it enchants—enrapturing the city's most powerful nobles into the depths of her song.

When her brother's best friend, Arthur Brandwynne, walks through the door, Lila's courageous twin sister, Lana, pushes her to reveal the feelings she's hidden from him for years. Confident on stage but anxious at heart, Lila blushes into oblivion for a man who has always been kind to her. But her highest-paying client, Lord Kaelthor Virelock, lurks in the shadows, and the moment Lila's attention shifts, so does his temper.

When Kaelthor's obsession spirals into jealous rage, Lila and Lana are pulled into something far more dangerous than they realize. Lila would do anything to keep Arthur out of the line of fire, but Arthur is determined to withstand the heat. As these life-long friends become more entangled in Kaelthor's dark web, the whispers around the brothel begin to feel less like rumors and more like a warning. Kaelthor is a man who always gets what he wants. And in his mind, Lila is not just a performer; she is his songbird.

And songbirds, after all, are meant to be kept in cages.

Jolene Tyler

Born more right-brained than left, Jolene Tyler has always had an eye for all things creative. In her younger years, she loved both theater and art, which lead her to chasing an art degree in college. But academics were never her strong suit, and the social aspects of college were just a little too fun. The first year slipped through her hands, and she turned her creative passion toward hair. Years later, she became a salon owner.

From a young age, Jolene was drawn to poetry, though her verses never quite found their way into music. Instead, that love of language evolved into storytelling. At nineteen, she began writing a personal project—a story she’s been building for fourteen years with no end in sight.

In her early thirties, Jolene discovered Dungeons & Dragons, a game that reignited her passion for storytelling. Through it, she found a way to weave magic, wonder, and emotion into stories her friends could actually live out at the table. That creative spark gave life to her debut novel, The Light Between Us.

When she’s not writing, Jolene is usually camping with her husband and two kids, cheering them on at sports, or running family-friendly D&D games around the kitchen table. Life is busy, loud, and full of love.

Beautifully written debut novel! Great world building, characters that brought you right into their story, and an amazing brother's best friend trope that made my little heart happy. I am excited about book two.

This book completely stole my heart. The characters feel so real, funny, flawed, and full of love in all the best and messiest ways. Every page pulled me in deeper, making me laugh, tear up, and see little pieces of myself in their stories. It’s one of those rare reads that feels like a friend, comforting and honest, reminding you that being human or fey or quarter orc is beautifully complicated. 10 out of 10 read for me ❤️❤️

This book was so fun! This was such a light and easy read - Dungeons and Dragons romantasy that just screams to be read on a rainy day, curl up with this Green Man! Forced proximity with a brother's best friend. This is so cozy, a cinnaom roll MMC RANGER DADDY (coining that term) I also love that everyone is in their mid-to-late thirties which means a fully formed frontal lobe so no miscommunication, immature rants or forgiveness issues and it just makes you want to DIE for book two! This is a standalone but will be interconnected so I can't wait to see Lana's story next! Some of my favorite quotes below:

“Artie’s built for sunshine, Lila. He’s just caught in the rain.”

Forced proximity, Lila. It’s a thing. Trust me.”

I even clipped some lavender from the garden outside and tucked a sprig into his pillowcase.

“Don’t look at me,” I scoffed. “I was perfectly entertained. I found a certain well-worn novel in your collection. Quite a tale, really. Lots of stolen kisses behind castle walls…” Artie drummed his fingers against his knee, amusement tugging at his lips. “I’ll have you know that’s an epic adventure.” I smirked. “Epically romantic.”

“Quarter, half, a third—it’s the tusks that matter. I hear their size is a clear indication of other... important extremities.”

“Hips are... a weakness.”

Stop letting the moonlight fall on you like it knows how badly I want you. Like the green of your skin isn’t unfairly perfect, and your arms weren’t built to undo me.

I’m guessing the lavender in my pillow was your doing. I’m not sure if it helped me sleep or just made me miss you more. Also… for what it’s worth, your breakdown? Weirdly sexy. Easily the hottest thing that’s happened to me all week. Briar never stood a chance. The book’s on the nightstand. Let me know when you get to Chapter Twenty-Three.

The hand still wrapped around my ring slid lower, threading his fingers through mine. My fingers curled around his like a lifeline. If I could have, I would have fused every part of me to him, matched my heartbeat to his, if only to draw in some of that unshakable certainty.

But I always woke to him tucking a blanket around me and pulling his bedroll beside the couch, moving through the dark like a man guarding something he wasn’t sure he was allowed to touch.

“I feel like I’m standing in a burning room without permission to use water.”

“Maybe you didn’t know what you were signing up for—the lengths I’d go for you once I realized it was more.” He swallowed. “And I’ve tried to be the version of me you liked—the one who kept a little distance. But I don’t know how to do this halfway. And maybe that’s why you keep pulling back. Because it’s too much. Because I’m too much. But if that song meant anything, if even part of you still feels what I do—then, dammit, Lila... I don’t understand why you won’t let me in.”

He would burn the whole damn city down for me. But that fire? It hadn’t been snuffed out. No, he’d held it. And when I’d drawn a line between us, he didn’t walk away. He paced the edges, standing in the heat of it until it blistered and ached. Artie wasn’t just a man willing to walk through the flames for me. He was a man willing to wait inside it if I asked him to.

“Always drawn to one another, no matter how often they burned.”

“When I kiss Lila, it won’t be on a dare.”

Yes. Put me in a room with her. Close the door. Let her look at me like that again, without an audience this time.

“Overthinking?” he offered. “Into oblivion,” I admitted.

“That mouth—” he said, almost as breathless as I was. “Can call me whatever it wants, so long as it kisses me that sweetly afterward.”

“Five seconds," he whispered again, still catching his breath. “Four…” My impatient hips moved of their own accord. “Don’t,” he warned, kissing me between numbers. “Three. Two.” My nails dug into his back. “One. Look down.” I did. And stars.

“You don’t give a man a gift and then take it back. That’s rude, Lila.”

I LOVED this book!! It was easy to follow and had a very modern feel while being a fantasy. It was witty, and poetic in the perfect amount. The author does a great job showing you the details without telling you and giving it all away at once. I can’t wait for the next book! This is a must read and definitely an author to keep your eye on! 🤩🤩🤩

The Light Between Us pulled me in and did not let go. Lila and Artie’s love is powerful and comforting, the kind of love that holds strong even when she’s crashing out in a carriage. And there are moments where everything is on the line. I caught myself saying “no no NO” out loud more than once.

Absolutely adding this to my comfort read list!

For a debut novel, this was so well written — I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this story! I was lucky enough to receive an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Lila and Lana are twin sisters and talented performers: Lana the dancer and Lila the Siren. I’ve never read a fantasy that explored sirens in quite this way, but once I learned more about the concept, I was hooked. Lila’s story about escaping a very powerful warlock’s magic and finding romance along the way pulled me in even more. The more I read, the more I loved Lila’s story — and the banter between the sisters had me smiling and laughing throughout.

This fantasy captivated me from the very beginning. It made me laugh, it made me tear up, and it carried so much emotional depth. As someone who has experienced an abusive relationship, this story touched me on a personal level. I truly appreciated how deeply layered the characters were, and how the side characters looked out for one another — their loyalty and teamwork were inspiring. And let’s be honest, Lana is the real MVP of this story! She was an absolute hoot.

Add in childhood friend Artie (who also happens to be their brother’s best friend), and the romance starts to unfold from there. It was romancing, let’s just say that — and I loved the little bit of spice we got. I really enjoyed the dual POV in the second part. The magic, the romance, the suspense, the sisterhood…just 🤌

You know a book is good when you finish it and already wishing for a sequel!

Fantastic job, girl!! Thank you again for letting me be part of your ARC team. I’ll read anything you write next. 🫶

An incredible debut novel about love, sisterhood and unchecked power!

Lila is a siren, some say her voice is a true gift from the gods. Artie, is her brother’s best friend. He thinks Lila is off limits until he sees her sing, she sends him a vision wrapped in longing, love and desire. Could there be something more here? Or is this just a childhood crush? The two have no time to find out. A power hungry and controlling noble thinks he owns Lila and her beautiful voice. Kaelthor will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Artie will stop at nothing to protect Lila, but Lila is unwilling to put those she loves in danger for her own safety. A harrowing story about escaping abuse, healing and the bonds of friendship.

I loved this book SO MUCH!!! File Arthur Brandwynne under one of my new fav book boyfriends! He oozes subtle “touch her and die” vibes while also being insanely tender and loving.

If you love,

- Best friend’s little sister
- Touch her and die vibes
- Found family
- She falls first
- One bed
- Forced proximity

Then this book if for you! Do not, I REPEAT do not miss out on this incredible debut novel by Jolene Tyler. There better be a book two because I need more of these characters and their stories ASAP!

Thank you Jolene Tyler for this ARC it was a wonderful read.

The Light Between Us by Jolene Tyler was exactly the kind of book I needed. It was light, refreshing, and honestly just a total mood booster. What I thought was going to be an insta-love situation actually surprised me with a really well done slow burn, and the yearning? Top tier. Absolutely delicious.

And can we talk about the MMC for a second? Certified cinnamon roll behavior. A new book boyfriend has officially been added to the roster because this man had me giggling and kicking my feet the entire time.

Between the found family vibes, friends-to-lovers tension, and all the soft emotional moments, this book just hit perfectly. If you’re looking for something comforting, sweet, and impossible not to smile through, definitely check this one out. Plus it’s on Kindle Unlimited, which honestly feels like a public service.

Read it and let me know what you think because I need to scream about this with somebody.

I was not expecting to fall in love with a D&D inspired book, but here we are. And honestly, whats not to love?

Take a chance on this one and you will meet the green flag MMC you did not know you needed. He is steady and supportive in all the right ways, and completely no nonsense when it comes to backing up Lila, our Siren FMC. Watching her rebuild her confidence after surviving an abusive, power hungry villain was so satisfying. Lila’s growth feels earned and authentic, and I found myself rooting for her the entire time.

The banter genuinely made me smile. The found family dynamic added so much heart. The crime driven plot kept things moving at a pace that never dragged but still let the emotional moments breathe.

With smooth dialogue and strong relational dynamics, this was so easy to get lost in. I am already counting down to book two.

This book was absolutely amazing. From the very first chapter, the descriptions were so atmospheric that the city felt alive in the best way. Lila as a half-elf siren with a voice powerful enough to stir devotion or obsession? Obsessed.

The brother’s best friend trope was everything I needed and more. Artie showing up exactly when she needs him most had me kicking my feet. Also, the inclusion of orc characters was such a unique and refreshing touch in this fantasy world. It added a layer that made the setting feel distinct from other books.

Truly one of those reads that sweeps you away. I am literally stoked for book two because I need to know what happens next. @author.jolenetyler you really outdid yourself with this one! Thank you for gifting us a great read! 🖤

The Light Between Us by Jolene Tyler

This story delivered such a powerful and heartfelt journey. The characters navigate self-acceptance, healing from abuse, claiming autonomy, and learning to trust both love and support. Their growth felt authentic and deeply earned.

The relationships absolutely shine. The communication, the banter, the tension, and the moments of real vulnerability created such a compelling dynamic. The side characters were absolute fire and added so much heart and humor to the narrative.

The ending had me literally saying “No!” out loud because I was not ready to leave this world. A sequel is absolutely needed. Fingers crossed for Book 2 🤞🏻

Thank you to the author for the honor of being part of your ARC reading team. This one will stay with me for a long time.

This story stole my heart!
The characters are beautifully developed, the story is carefully crafted and you can tell the author put a lot of time and love into this story.
I love the split perspective between the two main characters. I always wish I knew what was happening in the other’s mind, so it is always refreshing to find a story told from both sides!
This book will have make you laugh, swoon, cry and scream both in terror and delight!
Strong supporting characters and theme.
I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next!

With masterfully crafted world building and characters you simply fall in love with; Jolene Tyler’s debut novel is an instant win for the romantasy genre. From Sirens, to magic based cults, cunning villains, and QUARTER orcs; It is mature, perfectly paced, and entertaining the entire way through. When I reached the end, I could only think “okay, when is the next one coming out?”

Truly a delightful read, I highly highly recommend it!

I finished the book and must say it's a masterpiece, like seriously a well-grafted book that combines fantasy that feels modern. Loved the relationships between the sisters and, of course, Artie, because who in their right mind won't fall for him?

The Light Between Us is your next 5 star read, just trust me.

Inspired by DnD, it follows Lila, her twin sister, their older brother's best friend Artie, and a merry band of idiots.

It flawlessly blends whimsy with stress written in language that is poetic and descriptive while getting to the damn point.

This was my last eyeball read of the year, and it wound up being one of my favorites.

Do yourself a favor and read this one as soon as you can.

The Light Between Us by Jolene Tyler
3.5☆

Peak cozy romantasy is the best way to describe the vibes of this book.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘜𝘴 is such an easy, comforting read in the best way. It has that soft cottage-core aesthetic where the magic feels whimsical, the found family vibes are immaculate, and the slow burn romance sneaks up on you until suddenly you’re giggling and kicking your feet at 2am.

Twin sisters, Lila and Lana, are performers with beautifully unique magic, especially Lila as a siren. I loved her journey, escaping a narcissistic & controlling warlock while slowly rediscovering herself. It felt emotional without becoming too heavy while darker themes were handled with such care. There’s depth to the story, but it still keeps that light, cozy energy throughout.

“𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙚,” 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙖 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙, “𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙚, 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙬𝙚’𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙖 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙚𝙙.”

And don’t even get me started on Arthur. Most of the highlights I made were the words coming out of that male’s mouth. He’s an orc Robin Hood with daddy energy, and a certified cinnamon roll MMC. He and Lila have a childhood connection (aka crush) so the yearning in this book was top-tier. The heat caught me completely off guard though, because what started off feeling sweet and easy, turned into this satisfying slow burn full of tension and devotion.

“𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝—“ 𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙, 𝙖𝙡𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙨 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙨 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙨. “𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙢𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨, 𝙖𝙨 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙠𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙.”

“𝙋𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚,” 𝙄 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙙, 𝙪𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙣.
𝙃𝙞𝙨 𝙚𝙮𝙚𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙙.
“𝘿𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙜 𝙢𝙚,” 𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙. “𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩, 𝙄’𝙢 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨. 𝘿𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙩.”
𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙣, 𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙠 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙨.

The banter was hilarious, the side characters felt warm and lovable, and the found family dynamic added so much heart to the story. It’s the kind of book that makes you smile while reading it.

✨ Cozy fantasy vibes
✨ Brother’s best friend romance
✨ Cinnamon roll ranger MMC
✨ Found family + sisterhood
✨ Slow burn yearning
✨ Easy, comforting binge read

This is technically a standalone, but it sets up perfectly for interconnected stories (aka Lana’s story and she’s SPUNKY).

Basically, if you want romantasy that feels soft, magical, low-stress, and emotionally comforting with just enough spice and yearning to keep you kicking your feet— this book is it.

Say hello to the book that grabbed me by the throat, winked, and refused to let go 😮‍💨✨I went in innocent. I came out emotionally altered. This story is a fantasy lover’s dream buffet; magical beings, deliciously flirty banter, a slow burn that simmers until you’re screaming, and that unhinged “touch her and you’re dead” energy I will NEVER get tired of.

Lila is a half-elf with a siren voice, a wild sparkle, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting, she just needed the RIGHT man to bring it all to the surface. Enter Artie: grumpy, sharp tongued, secretly tender, and layered like an emotional onion you absolutely will cry over. One moment he’s making you laugh, the next he’s cracking your heart wide open with soft, unexpected intimacy. Sir??? Rude.

“He drew a blanket over me, smoothing the edge beneath my chin before I heard his footsteps retreat. I thought he’d gone. But the rustle of his bedroll pulled closer, right to the edge of the couch, where I could feel the warmth of his body just beyond reach.”

The world building? Exquisite. The food, the settings, the tiny details…I could taste it, see it, live in it. Major Holly Black vibes and I devoured every second. And the fact that this is a debut novel is honestly mind blowing. The world is rich, the characters are deep and tangled together in all the right ways and everything feels intentional and alive.

The spice is spicing 🌶️ (he literally carries her underwear into battle—iconic)

The angst hurts in all the right places 🖤

And the emotional lessons sneak up on you and linger like an old friend.

This book is a cozy, traumatic, heart melting, brain tingling fantasy roller coaster…and that ending?? I PANICKED. But don’t worry, YES, there is a book two (I checked immediately), because I am not done with this world or these characters.

New author. Instant obsession. Read it… but make sure you clear your schedule first because you will not be able to put it down 😍

🌶️ 🌶️🌶️.5/5

P.S. Extra kudos to this author as I’m usually an audiobook only, hyper scheduled December girlie… but this book had me ditching my to-do list, ignoring responsibilities, and sneaking one more chapter. Zero regrets. 🔥📖

The Light Between Us

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Stoked I was given the chance to ARC read this book for a friend who is now a published author!!! Happy pub day 😍

In her debut novel Jolene Tyler serves us some delicious fantasy escapism while gently shining a light on real life experiences through extremely relatable relationship conflicts and emotions. Of all the FMCs I adore, Lila is one I can truly relate to— having also experienced an emotionally abusive relationship as a young adult. But Artie… oh Arthur Brandywynne how I melted over this chef’s kiss of an MMC. I fell in love with him the second he met eyes with Lila and gave her all his focus. This book had me at ‘she falls for her brother’s best friend’ but I was SAT for how well Artie saw and understood Lila and how Jolene brought their love to life on the page in such a natural way (this girl can write y’all!). He is equal parts gentle ‘I’ll take care of it’ energy and ‘touch her and die’ perfection! The world building and magic system were unique and fun- Lila is a siren and her ability to weave magic into her songs was such a fresh idea I absolutely loved it!! I was laughing at the banter throughout, at one point I was tearing up lol, found family, forced proximity, ONE BED you guys need I say more?!? Ok yes I do! Lol. The side characters were fabulous, both male and female but let me just say this author can write some HOT emotionally mature men that I hope we get to see more of. And the horses?!? I freaking loved the horses 🥹 You know I’m already hoping for a sequel! You do not want to sleep on this cozy romantasy adventure 💜

I’ll end by saying that after reading this book I want to play Dungeons and Dragons lol! The fact that this book came from a game the author plays in her real life is just so cool to me.

✨A siren's song. A hunter's heart. A dark city.✨

A cozy romantic fantasy with a soft but sassy fmc and a cinnamon roll mmc that's sprinkled with forced proximity, anxiety rep, found family and unique magic? Jolene Tyler wrote a story that I quite literally couldn't put down, stayed up way too late reading and even woke up early as hell to continue.

I am a sucker for some older MCs with a touch her and die vibes and the delicious forming of a relationship with immaculate spice 🤌 The dedication the mmc has for protecting her while also trying to respect her wishes, the way he lets her take control, the fmc's anxious tendencies. I was there fornite all!! I'm also a sucker for a sister who is her total opposite but cares for her so much while also being absolutely hilarious which means I am already sat ready and waiting for book two!!!

Wow, I absolutely loved The Light Between Us! Artie and Lila’s childhood-crush-to-lovers story was so sweet and heartfelt—I couldn’t get enough of them. The bond between the twins, Lila and Lana, was one of my favorite parts; their friendship felt so real and close, it made me feel connected to them too.

Tyler’s writing was incredible, so detailed and vivid that it felt like I was right there in the Gilded Bloom, at a Noble’s party, or just hanging out in the twins flat. She did such an amazing job bringing every scene to life.

The story was cozy, romantic, and exciting all at once, and I adored all the D&D Easter eggs sprinkled throughout. My only complaint? I wish it was longer! I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait for book two—what a beautiful and warm read this was.

✨️ When the Heart Blooms 🪷

Some stories feel like standing in a garden at dawn, when the air is cool, the dew is crisp, and everything fragile is ready to unfurl with the rising light. It's the feeling at the heart of "The Light Between Us" by Jolene Tyler and I've been so eager to share her story.

This is a friends-to-lovers romantasy rooted in patience, devotion, and the careful restoration of a wounded heart. Lila - a siren tempered by what she's endured - carries the lingering echo of the warlock who once claimed her song, his presence humming through her thoughts like a discordant refrain she cannot silence.

Against that darkness stands Artie: part-orc, steady as stone, and tender where it matters most. His love for Lila is not something he claims. It is something he tends. He honors her rhythm, listens to her fears, and becomes the firm ground beneath her feet. What grows between them is not consuming; it is sustaining, rooted in trust, gentleness, and the quiet courage of choosing one another again and again.

Their bond unfolds without spectacle or rush. They are just two souls leaning toward the same light at their own measured pace. Watching Lila return to herself beside Artie was like witnessing a long-dormant wildflower turn its face toward the sun.

The world of Nightspire in this story holds an intimate, intentional magic shaped by Jolene's love for Dungeons & Dragons and role-play storytelling. It reads like a campaign guided by heart, where the emotional journey matters just as much as the victory.

I haven’t read a romantasy book in a minute, but on a recommendation and whim, I tried it! So glad I did! The fantasy aspect of the book (Elves, Orcs, & magic) wasn’t complicated by the author’s need to over explain. It just was, and unfolded naturally as the story evolved. The two primary characters—each reluctant to assume preordained roles within their community —felt crafted vs written, as was the supporting cast who were brilliant. Love and tension artfully built upon the other as the story gained momentum and took off. Halfway in, I quit trying to put the book down! I finished utterly satisfied—as only a good story can do—but thrilled that there will be more! A ten out of ten!

If you were to take a contemporary romantic suspense, add in all the fantasy elements we love, and wrap it up in a pretty GREEN bow, you’d get The Light Between Us! And boy, oh boy, is it SO good! I went in blind, which is my favorite way to read, and just took the journey as it was intended. I came out the other side with a new favorite book recommendation to throw around!💚

Let’s give Jolene a round of applause for her debut!! 🙌🏻

This book is such a fun read! You get all the best tropes -
•Brothers best friend
•Protective cinnamon roll (stalker x protector)
•Childhood crush
•Siren x Quarter Orc
•Anxiety rep

And the best part?! We get a sequel coming soon!

Fantasy romance fun

absolutely loved this book. It was easy to follow, and the characters felt genuinely real. Lila’s journey—searching for love, discovering her strength, and growing through every challenge—was both believable and compelling. The fantasy setting, complete with unique species and magic, made the story even more immersive and enjoyable. A wonderful read from start to finish.

Fantasy world building with a criminal case plot line! The writing was beautiful & steadily engaging. I never felt like it dragged or ran on. The characters are raw & emotional. Artie is the ultimate green flag MMC 💚 the side characters are just as deep & interesting!
Twin sister sirens who made me laugh, smile, & CRY!! I have so much hope & need for Lana to dance again in book 2! 😩🖤

I think it says a lot about a storyteller when you end up learning something about yourself through their characters.

I had a hard time liking Lila at first. She’s emotional, anxious, quick-tempered, and such an overthinker. Then it hit me—it’s because I process things almost exactly like she does. That constant feeling of being too much yet not enough, the exhausting mental spiral that follows… it can really take a toll. Realizing that made me soften—not just toward Lila, but toward myself.

Jolene has a gift for writing deeply relatable characters. Yes, there’s magic. Yes, there are fey, warlocks, sirens, orcs, and elves. But every one of them feels real. They’re complex, flawed, and wonderfully human in their own ways.

Knowing this story was inspired by Jolene’s D&D campaign made it even more fun to read. I loved catching the subtle (and not-so-subtle) nods to D&D lore and gameplay throughout.

All in all, I adored this book and sincerely hope we won’t have to wait too long for the next one.
An incredible debut—rich, heartfelt, and full of magic.

I loved this book! You easily fall in love with the main charaxters, Lila, Lana and Artie! The slow burn is WORTH THE WAIT! I adored Lila and her mannerisms and how awkward she is but in the best most relatable way 🩷 there’s a twist in this book you won’t see coming, honestly it was super interesting how it plays into the story. I’m hoping for book 2?!? 👀👀👀

I enjoyed this so much! It is a little hard to describe because you may call it a cozy fantasy because there isn't any big war or tyrannical leader we have to overthrow but it also isn't super low stakes. This had a very emotional story dealing with emotional and physical abuse and all the gaslighting and guilt that comes with it. But we also have a lot of lighthearted moments. Lila and Arties relationship was very sweet and I loved the found family they had. The cast of characters is very diverse and while I don't play Dungeons and Dragons, I thought it was fun to have some different species (orcs, tieflings, etc.) I am very much looking forward to Lanas story next (I am team Orion btw).
