The Light Between Us

Rate this book
Her voice once stirred devotion. Now it stirs obsession, and he will kill to claim it.

Lila Thorne was once a prodigy, a half-elf born to a religious commune where her voice was said to be blessed by Surén, the goddess of love and beauty.

Now, in the dark city of Nightspire, she's made a name for herself as 'Lila the Siren'. Whispers among nobles say that her voice can charm saints, seduce sinners, and unravel anyone in between.

She performs alongside her twin sister at the Gilded Bloom, an upscale brothel where the city's elite come to indulge, to disappear, or to sit slack-jawed, forgetting their own names. Among them is Lord Kaelthor. He's wealthy, dangerous, and very bad at taking no for an answer.

But then Artie returns.

He is her brother's best friend; the one she was never supposed to want. He's older now, steadier, and somehow even harder to resist. And he has a very inconvenient habit of showing up exactly when she needs him most.

Desire becomes rebellion. Obsession turns to war. And in a city where secrets are a form of currency, love might be the most dangerous gamble of all.

Jolene Tyler

Born more right-brained than left, Jolene Tyler has always had an eye for all things creative. In her younger years, she loved both theater and art, which lead her to chasing an art degree in college. But academics were never her strong suit, and the social aspects of college were just a little too fun. The first year slipped through her hands, and she turned her creative passion toward hair. Years later, she became a salon owner.

From a young age, Jolene was drawn to poetry, though her verses never quite found their way into music. Instead, that love of language evolved into storytelling. At nineteen, she began writing a personal project—a story she’s been building for fourteen years with no end in sight.

In her early thirties, Jolene discovered Dungeons & Dragons, a game that reignited her passion for storytelling. Through it, she found a way to weave magic, wonder, and emotion into stories her friends could actually live out at the table. That creative spark gave life to her debut novel, The Light Between Us.

When she’s not writing, Jolene is usually camping with her husband and two kids, cheering them on at sports, or running family-friendly D&D games around the kitchen table. Life is busy, loud, and full of love.

This book completely stole my heart. The characters feel so real, funny, flawed, and full of love in all the best and messiest ways. Every page pulled me in deeper, making me laugh, tear up, and see little pieces of myself in their stories. It’s one of those rare reads that feels like a friend, comforting and honest, reminding you that being human or fey or quarter orc is beautifully complicated. 10 out of 10 read for me ❤️❤️

I LOVED this book!! It was easy to follow and had a very modern feel while being a fantasy. It was witty, and poetic in the perfect amount. The author does a great job showing you the details without telling you and giving it all away at once. I can’t wait for the next book! This is a must read and definitely an author to keep your eye on! 🤩🤩🤩

The Light Between Us pulled me in and did not let go. Lila and Artie’s love is powerful and comforting, the kind of love that holds strong even when she’s crashing out in a carriage. And there are moments where everything is on the line. I caught myself saying “no no NO” out loud more than once.

Absolutely adding this to my comfort read list!

For a debut novel, this was so well written — I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this story! I was lucky enough to receive an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Lila and Lana are twin sisters and talented performers: Lana the dancer and Lila the Siren. I’ve never read a fantasy that explored sirens in quite this way, but once I learned more about the concept, I was hooked. Lila’s story about escaping a very powerful warlock’s magic and finding romance along the way pulled me in even more. The more I read, the more I loved Lila’s story — and the banter between the sisters had me smiling and laughing throughout.

This fantasy captivated me from the very beginning. It made me laugh, it made me tear up, and it carried so much emotional depth. As someone who has experienced an abusive relationship, this story touched me on a personal level. I truly appreciated how deeply layered the characters were, and how the side characters looked out for one another — their loyalty and teamwork were inspiring. And let’s be honest, Lana is the real MVP of this story! She was an absolute hoot.

Add in childhood friend Artie (who also happens to be their brother’s best friend), and the romance starts to unfold from there. It was romancing, let’s just say that — and I loved the little bit of spice we got. I really enjoyed the dual POV in the second part. The magic, the romance, the suspense, the sisterhood…just 🤌

You know a book is good when you finish it and already wishing for a sequel!

Fantastic job, girl!! Thank you again for letting me be part of your ARC team. I’ll read anything you write next. 🫶

An incredible debut novel about love, sisterhood and unchecked power!

Lila is a siren, some say her voice is a true gift from the gods. Artie, is her brother’s best friend. He thinks Lila is off limits until he sees her sing, she sends him a vision wrapped in longing, love and desire. Could there be something more here? Or is this just a childhood crush? The two have no time to find out. A power hungry and controlling noble thinks he owns Lila and her beautiful voice. Kaelthor will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Artie will stop at nothing to protect Lila, but Lila is unwilling to put those she loves in danger for her own safety. A harrowing story about escaping abuse, healing and the bonds of friendship.

I loved this book SO MUCH!!! File Arthur Brandwynne under one of my new fav book boyfriends! He oozes subtle “touch her and die” vibes while also being insanely tender and loving.

If you love,

- Best friend’s little sister
- Touch her and die vibes
- Found family
- She falls first
- One bed
- Forced proximity

Then this book if for you! Do not, I REPEAT do not miss out on this incredible debut novel by Jolene Tyler. There better be a book two because I need more of these characters and their stories ASAP!

Thank you Jolene Tyler for this ARC it was a wonderful read.

The Light Between Us by Jolene Tyler

This story delivered such a powerful and heartfelt journey. The characters navigate self-acceptance, healing from abuse, claiming autonomy, and learning to trust both love and support. Their growth felt authentic and deeply earned.

The relationships absolutely shine. The communication, the banter, the tension, and the moments of real vulnerability created such a compelling dynamic. The side characters were absolute fire and added so much heart and humor to the narrative.

The ending had me literally saying “No!” out loud because I was not ready to leave this world. A sequel is absolutely needed. Fingers crossed for Book 2 🤞🏻

Thank you to the author for the honor of being part of your ARC reading team. This one will stay with me for a long time.

This story stole my heart!
The characters are beautifully developed, the story is carefully crafted and you can tell the author put a lot of time and love into this story.
I love the split perspective between the two main characters. I always wish I knew what was happening in the other’s mind, so it is always refreshing to find a story told from both sides!
This book will have make you laugh, swoon, cry and scream both in terror and delight!
Strong supporting characters and theme.
I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next!

The Light Between us was equal parts romance and adventure. With masterfully crafted world building and characters you simply fall in love with; Jolene Tyler’s debut novel is an instant win for the romantasy genre. From Sirens, to magic based cults, cunning villains, and QUARTER orcs; It is mature, perfectly paced, and entertaining the entire way through. When I reached the end, I could only think “okay, when is the next one coming out?”

Truly a delightful read, I highly highly recommend it!

Say hello to the book that grabbed me by the throat, winked, and refused to let go 😮‍💨✨I went in innocent. I came out emotionally altered. This story is a fantasy lover’s dream buffet; magical beings, deliciously flirty banter, a slow burn that simmers until you’re screaming, and that unhinged “touch her and you’re dead” energy I will NEVER get tired of.

Lila is a half-elf with a siren voice, a wild sparkle, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting, she just needed the RIGHT man to bring it all to the surface. Enter Artie: grumpy, sharp tongued, secretly tender, and layered like an emotional onion you absolutely will cry over. One moment he’s making you laugh, the next he’s cracking your heart wide open with soft, unexpected intimacy. Sir??? Rude.

“He drew a blanket over me, smoothing the edge beneath my chin before I heard his footsteps retreat. I thought he’d gone. But the rustle of his bedroll pulled closer, right to the edge of the couch, where I could feel the warmth of his body just beyond reach.”

The world building? Exquisite. The food, the settings, the tiny details…I could taste it, see it, live in it. Major Holly Black vibes and I devoured every second. And the fact that this is a debut novel is honestly mind blowing. The world is rich, the characters are deep and tangled together in all the right ways and everything feels intentional and alive.

The spice is spicing 🌶️ (he literally carries her underwear into battle—iconic)

The angst hurts in all the right places 🖤

And the emotional lessons sneak up on you and linger like an old friend.

This book is a cozy, traumatic, heart melting, brain tingling fantasy roller coaster…and that ending?? I PANICKED. But don’t worry, YES, there is a book two (I checked immediately), because I am not done with this world or these characters.

New author. Instant obsession. Read it… but make sure you clear your schedule first because you will not be able to put it down 😍

🌶️ 🌶️🌶️.5/5

P.S. Extra kudos to this author as I’m usually an audiobook only, hyper scheduled December girlie… but this book had me ditching my to-do list, ignoring responsibilities, and sneaking one more chapter. Zero regrets. 🔥📖

The Light Between Us

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Stoked I was given the chance to ARC read this book for a friend who is now a published author!!! Happy pub day 😍

In her debut novel Jolene Tyler serves us some delicious fantasy escapism while gently shining a light on real life experiences through extremely relatable relationship conflicts and emotions. Of all the FMCs I adore, Lila is one I can truly relate to— having also experienced an emotionally abusive relationship as a young adult. But Artie… oh Arthur Brandywynne how I melted over this chef’s kiss of an MMC. I fell in love with him the second he met eyes with Lila and gave her all his focus. This book had me at ‘she falls for her brother’s best friend’ but I was SAT for how well Artie saw and understood Lila and how Jolene brought their love to life on the page in such a natural way (this girl can write y’all!). He is equal parts gentle ‘I’ll take care of it’ energy and ‘touch her and die’ perfection! The world building and magic system were unique and fun- Lila is a siren and her ability to weave magic into her songs was such a fresh idea I absolutely loved it!! I was laughing at the banter throughout, at one point I was tearing up lol, found family, forced proximity, ONE BED you guys need I say more?!? Ok yes I do! Lol. The side characters were fabulous, both male and female but let me just say this author can write some HOT emotionally mature men that I hope we get to see more of. And the horses?!? I freaking loved the horses 🥹 You know I’m already hoping for a sequel! You do not want to sleep on this cozy romantasy adventure 💜

I’ll end by saying that after reading this book I want to play Dungeons and Dragons lol! The fact that this book came from a game the author plays in her real life is just so cool to me.

Wow, I absolutely loved The Light Between Us! Artie and Lila’s childhood-crush-to-lovers story was so sweet and heartfelt—I couldn’t get enough of them. The bond between the twins, Lila and Lana, was one of my favorite parts; their friendship felt so real and close, it made me feel connected to them too.

Tyler’s writing was incredible, so detailed and vivid that it felt like I was right there in the Gilded Bloom, at a Noble’s party, or just hanging out in the twins flat. She did such an amazing job bringing every scene to life.

The story was cozy, romantic, and exciting all at once, and I adored all the D&D Easter eggs sprinkled throughout. My only complaint? I wish it was longer! I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait for book two—what a beautiful and warm read this was.

✨️ When the Heart Blooms 🪷

Some stories feel like standing in a garden at dawn, when the air is cool, the dew is crisp, and everything fragile is ready to unfurl with the rising light. It's the feeling at the heart of "The Light Between Us" by Jolene Tyler and I've been so eager to share her story.

This is a friends-to-lovers romantasy rooted in patience, devotion, and the careful restoration of a wounded heart. Lila - a siren tempered by what she's endured - carries the lingering echo of the warlock who once claimed her song, his presence humming through her thoughts like a discordant refrain she cannot silence.

Against that darkness stands Artie: part-orc, steady as stone, and tender where it matters most. His love for Lila is not something he claims. It is something he tends. He honors her rhythm, listens to her fears, and becomes the firm ground beneath her feet. What grows between them is not consuming; it is sustaining, rooted in trust, gentleness, and the quiet courage of choosing one another again and again.

Their bond unfolds without spectacle or rush. They are just two souls leaning toward the same light at their own measured pace. Watching Lila return to herself beside Artie was like witnessing a long-dormant wildflower turn its face toward the sun.

The world of Nightspire in this story holds an intimate, intentional magic shaped by Jolene's love for Dungeons & Dragons and role-play storytelling. It reads like a campaign guided by heart, where the emotional journey matters just as much as the victory.

Fantasy romance fun

absolutely loved this book. It was easy to follow, and the characters felt genuinely real. Lila’s journey—searching for love, discovering her strength, and growing through every challenge—was both believable and compelling. The fantasy setting, complete with unique species and magic, made the story even more immersive and enjoyable. A wonderful read from start to finish.

I think it says a lot about a storyteller when you end up learning something about yourself through their characters.

I had a hard time liking Lila at first. She’s emotional, anxious, quick-tempered, and such an overthinker. Then it hit me—it’s because I process things almost exactly like she does. That constant feeling of being too much yet not enough, the exhausting mental spiral that follows… it can really take a toll. Realizing that made me soften—not just toward Lila, but toward myself.

Jolene has a gift for writing deeply relatable characters. Yes, there’s magic. Yes, there are fey, warlocks, sirens, orcs, and elves. But every one of them feels real. They’re complex, flawed, and wonderfully human in their own ways.

Knowing this story was inspired by Jolene’s D&D campaign made it even more fun to read. I loved catching the subtle (and not-so-subtle) nods to D&D lore and gameplay throughout.

All in all, I adored this book and sincerely hope we won’t have to wait too long for the next one.
An incredible debut—rich, heartfelt, and full of magic.

I loved this book! I learned some new creature types that kept me intrigued. The characters are relatable with the real life struggles and all the little moments that most authors would skip over were detailed, it really drew me into the story and captured my heart! I’m definitely dying to know more about the feywild portrait so I’m hoping for more to this great story!

This book is in a fun fantasy world of other beings than just fae, which I loved. This adventure and love story is gripping and fast-paced. The author uses our senses to bring us right into the story. There is just enough spice to make us pant while still having plenty of plot! Finally, I'm here for the comedy, fun banter, and the author's prose is very relatable!

I really enjoyed The Light Between Us! A jewel of a romantasy story! Highly Recommend!

The world-building is masterfully handled, dropping the reader directly into the action and trusting them to learn the rules of Nightspire through character interactions and vivid descriptions. It feels immersive from the very first page.

The easy banter and shared history between Lila, a siren with a powerful gift, and Artie, her protective childhood crush, quickly blossoms into a romance with sizzling tension. Their relationship felt lived it. Immediately! You could feel they had a history, even without words, just by their mannerisms around each other. Sure, classic 'friends-to-lovers,' but done sooo well. And their romance evolves.

Their happy moments especially early on aren't just happy… they're fragile. I regularly felt an undercurrent of dread, waiting for the other shoe to drop. The tenderness and normalcy are made all the more intense and fleeting by the constant, chilling threat of the villain. I found myself reading with my heart in my throat, completely invested in the tentative peace and truly terrified for the characters when it gets shattered.

The author creates a “forge of character” for Lila, stripping her of her protector (Artie) and her main support system (Lana), leaving her with nothing but her own fear, guilt, and a choice: wait for someone else to take care of the problem, or does she become the person who confronts it herself. Her decision to seek out Riven is the single most important turning point for her character in the entire novel.

By the end, we're not watching a superhero. We're watching an ordinary person (well, with extraordinary abilities) CHOOSE to become a hero.

And through that choice, Lila isn’t just a witness, she is the catalyst for the high-stakes climax. Her decision to take matters into her own hands is a true 'point of no return' moment that is both thrilling and deeply earned. So much more powerful than if she were to be rescued. What a character arc!

The decision to keep Lila away from the final confrontation, showing it entirely from Artie's POV was, for me, the perfect choice. It felt unique and incredibly true to the story. It kept the focus squarely on Lila's trust, terror, and agonizing wait, and was FAR more emotionally impactful for me than putting her in a straightforward action scene ever could have been. We were there with Lila, full of suspense, going through it with her.

This book was a ride down the rapids of clever writing, classy romance, sassy women, beautiful magic, striking men, charismatic characters, stunning hilarity, and a terrifying antagonist.

Jolene Tyler slams an epic touchdown after so much mastery over the art of storytelling and what it means to design characters who can break goose bumps on you. If you read this book, you’d tell me I was insane if I told you this is her debut. Yes, people, debut authors can write like that.

Living in a magical realm filled with ethereal and mystical beings like orcs and elves, Lila is a hypnotizing siren singer who can put you flat on your ass with just one song if that was what she literally intends to do to you. Her voice is an alluring trap and this is what the vile menace, Kaelthor, gets addicted to and he will stop at nothing to make Lila his. Mentally abusing her and scaring not just her but all of us, Kaelthor was a horrifying antagonist who repeatedly made me want to slay him with an axe. He knew exactly how to be terrifying and I loved Jolene’s talent so much for it.

Lila was equally terrified and once her older brother’s best friend is established to protect her side at all times from a military stand point, everything slowly started to burn. Lila and Artie set hurricanes ablaze every time they were in the same space together. I dissolved myself into their love story, loving every single moment of every arc they went through. Artie establishes one of the most hottest equations to get an attractive MMC – his steadfastness, his calm mysteriousness and his unpredictable actions that can sweep any woman off her feet.

In between all these flames, I burst into laughter whenever Lana (Lila’s twin) opened her mouth or did something hilarious. Lana was such a sassy creature whose victims have to be protected at all costs. I loved the hell out of this character, I really did. She was so unapologetically herself and so open and honest that she shone effortlessly through the pages even with Artie and Lila shining together. Dare I mention Fenton fully capable of snatching a reader’s attention the same way?

I am so looking forward to the sequel to this and I’m so much honoured to have met Jolene and receive a free copy of the e-book from her. Thank you so much for trusting me to review your work, Jolene, it’s been a great ride and I hope you reach more summits with your writing. Many congratulations on the release of this book!

This book completely swept me off my feet!

From the very first chapter, I was hooked by the depth of the characters and the chemistry that practically leapt off the page. I need a book that grabs my attention immediately or I'm out and The author did a phenomenal job doing so.

Characters who feel real—flawed, vulnerable, and endlessly lovable, watching them grow both individually and together made it extremely hard to put this book down (I have kids 😅 so I didn't have a choice)

The pacing was spot-on—never rushed, but never dragging. It gave the emotional beats room to breathe while keeping the story irresistibly engaging. And let’s talk about the spice level… 🔥 Medium-paced, yes, but the tension and payoff were chef’s kiss. Every intimate moment felt earned, natural, and downright electric.

What I loved most was how the plot balanced passion with meaning. The conflict wasn’t just a misunderstanding or convenient drama—it was believable, heartfelt, and rooted in who these characters are. The dialogue sparkled with humor and warmth, filled with clever and sarcastic banter that made me laugh out loud more than once.

I was drawn into a story that felt alive—the world was so richly described that I could see, feel, and almost taste every scene. The author’s writing is gorgeously descriptive without ever slowing the pace, painting vivid settings that make you feel like you’re right there alongside the characters. The world feels dynamic and immersive, full of little details that make it pulse with life.

And that ending? Totally unpredictable, yet so satisfying. I closed the book grinning, a little teary, and already wanting to re-read it, eager for book two!

If you’re looking for a romance that delivers emotional depth, genuine connection, and the perfect amount of heat—this is the one.

Very cliche, to the point it almost felt like satire, but not? Could be lack of creativity, could be laziness. However, I'm sick of the duality of sun and moon gods, and the last names of these characters are so dang cheesy.
My biggest issue with this book is that the main character is 36, but is consistently described like a 19 year old. It's just not at all believable to me that someone in their mid-thirties would act the way Lila does. She is hard for me to relate to throughout the book. She's insecure, in a way that's annoying in a main character, and barely uses her seemingly awesome magic. There's other times she acts with bravery or humor, and that's when she's most likable, but it wasn't constant enough.
While the bones of this story were interesting, I didn't love the writing style. I don't know how to describe it other than it felt immature to me. It is not a surprise to me that this is Jolene Tyler's debut novel.
Funny enough, the few smut scenes were the parts of the book that felt the most fleshed out and mature. The sequence of events actually made sense, and I felt captivated by the characters.
Overall, this isn't a bad book, but I think it would have benefited from more editing and simply calling the main characters 22 rather than 36.

For a debut novel, this story absolutely blew me away. The writing, the emotion, the world-building, the characters — it all felt so polished and powerful that I kept forgetting this was Jolene Tyler’s first book. You can feel the heart she poured into every chapter.

This book completely swept me away. From the very first chapter, I knew I was in trouble — the good kind of trouble — the “I’m not moving from this spot until I finish” kind of trouble.

And listen… the second I saw the FMC was a siren? It was OVER for me. I had to read it. Sirens are my entire personality at this point, and Lila instantly became one of my new favorite siren heroines. She’s tender, fierce, flawed, resilient, and written with so much heart that I kept cheering for her like she was family.

The character work in this book shines. Everyone feels real — messy, loving, hurting, healing.
The relationships? THE FOUND FAMILY VIBES?? The loyalty, the banter, the tension, the quiet moments of vulnerability… all of it hit so deep. And don’t even get me started on Artie. The man radiates “touch her and die” energy in the softest, sweetest way.

And because I didn’t want this world to end, I actually slowed myself down. I could have devoured this in a day or two, but instead I stretched it out over a full week because I wasn’t ready to leave Lila, Artie, Lana, Fenton, or Orion behind. That’s how magical this story is — you don’t just read it, you live in it.

The magic, the danger, the emotional depth, the humor, the healing, the heartbreak — everything came together so beautifully. This book made me laugh, tear up, swoon, and cling to my Kindle like it was my emotional support device.

And honestly? Getting to message and chat with Jolene during my read made the whole experience unforgettable. Jolene, thank you for letting me absolutely blow up your DMs with my reactions — you made reading this even more special. 💜🖤

If you love sirens, childhood-friends-to-lovers, protective MMCs, beautifully complicated heroines, emotional depth, and fantasy worlds that feel alive… you need this book in your life.

An easy, glowing ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ from me. ✨🧜‍♀️💖

This debut absolutely wrecked me in the best way (how is this her first book? Way to set the bar impossibly high!) Jolene Tyler gives us a siren who performs in a brothel, a brother's best friend who sees her like no one else ever has, and a villain so obsessive you'll want to throw your Kindle.

But what really got me was how raw and real the emotional journey felt. Watching Lila learn she deserves love that doesn't ask her to be smaller, that doesn't chip away at who she is.

Arthur Brandwynne (Artie) is now officially on my list of book boyfriends who ruined me for real men, and Lana (the twin sister) had me cackling out loud more than once.

If you want a romantasy that makes you laugh, swoon, and ugly-cry while also giving you hope that healing is possible, this is it. I'm already desperate for book two.

This delicious book should be paired with a complex, spicy wine with medieval notes—perhaps René Rostaing's Côte-Rôtie La Viallière. Pour yourself a glass, toss a log on the fire, and sit back under a quilt with this beautifully written fantasy. You’ll never have a more delightful, enchanting evening. In this fantastical world, where magic is harvested within forests and a painting contains a portal to the abyss, prepare to be whisked away to experience the tale of Lila, a gorgeous siren who captures a man’s soul with her intoxicating song, but unfortunately, this particular man's soul is pure evil. When Artie, her brother's best friend, comes to her rescue, sparks fly…in all directions. You’ll be turning those pages faster and faster as the sexual tension builds right along with the peril.

The Light Between Us pulled me in from the very first chapter. Lila and Lana feel like real people I’d genuinely want as friends—their sisterhood is warm, sharp, and beautifully written. The chemistry between Lila and Artie is effortless and magnetic, building in a way that feels both natural and deeply satisfying.

Kaelthor… his arc is chilling. The book handles abuse with honesty and clarity, never romanticizing it, and it makes Lila’s strength all the more impactful.

The world feels alive, the supporting cast is distinct, and the emotional range is incredible. I closed the book already eager for the next one—and especially to see what chaos Lana is about to unleash.

Soft DNF now for. —— I sadly think this is one of those “it’s me, I’m the problem” cases. Technically there’s nothing wrong with this book, it’s just not for me. I was going into this thinking I was diving into a more “angst induced” read, which clearly this is not. Which is totally fine, if you’re more into cozy reads with a romcom-ish undertone. Something I’m clearly not, I’d really have to be in a specific mood if I want read books belonging to that specific category and enjoy them.

Overall, a good book (from what I’ve read so far) but not for me. At least not at this specific moment.

The Light Between Us is your next 5 star read, just trust me.

Inspired by D&D, it follows Lila, her twin sister, their older brother's best friend Artie, and a merry band of idiots.

It flawlessly blends whimsy with stress written in language that is poetic and descriptive while getting to the damn point.

This was my last eyeball read of the year, and it wound up being one of my favorites.

Do yourself a favor and read this one as soon as you can.
