Bound by Hearts & Wings: Tales from the Crystal Heart Caverns

Rate this book
A hundred years ago, Talero burned.

The human king’s Purge nearly wiped out every non-human race, leaving the survivors scattered, broken, and forgotten. The gargoyles fled into the mountains, while the rest were driven underground to fade from memory. To those left below, the only thing worse than humans were the gargoyles who abandoned them.

Gea, half-Fae and half-human, was born in that hollow darkness. Hardened by cruelty and survival, she risks everything to steal the magic-infused medicine her people need to live. But when one mission collides with a gargoyle raid, everything unravels.

Onyx never wanted to lead. Brash and reckless, he is more fists than finesse, until one impulsive choice puts him in Gea’s path. Gravely wounded, he is dragged into the secret caverns no outsider was ever meant to see. Forced to rely on those he once believed extinct, he begins to see more in Gea than her sharp her quiet strength, her hidden softness, and the scars she carries from both past and present.

As an unlikely bond grows between them, danger rises above. Humans are gathering power they were never meant to wield, and another raid may be the only chance to stop them. Gea and Onyx must fight side by side, torn between loyalty and longing, fate and freedom.

Because falling for each other was never part of the plan.
And one choice could destroy everything.

Bound by Hearts & Wings is a sweeping tale of reluctant allies, slow-burn romance, healing from scars, and the courage to defy destiny.

I am a sucker for gargoyle romances and this one blew me away . In a world where gargoyles and fae are fighting against an evil human tyrant king Lauren did such a phenomenal job building a hauntingly beautiful but realistic world. I also absolutely loved Onyx and Geas relationship they complement each other , together they’re stronger and better but in a way where they each still get to be their own people. There’s plot AND spice and it’s spicey 🔥

While we left Jet and Evolette bonding in the first volume, the situation is now different and darker. The human is afflicted by a strange illness that won't leave her alone, even in the Obsidian Mountains.
Luckily, a team of gargoyles led by Jet's friend, Onyx, is preparing to raid a shipment intended for King Quint. What the gargoyle does not know is that someone else has already set their sights on an even more valuable prize hidden among that cargo😶‍🌫️

The situation here is a matter of life and death, salvation and despair. There is the gang led by the last surviving troll and various goblins and other minor, forgotten creatures. Then there is her: the half-fae, broken by the hands of men and her lack of self-confidence after experiencing so much pain.
The small team assembled by the Cristal Heart Caverns is prepared to go to any lengths to retrieve a vital element that will provide relief for their people. The upper and lower worlds collide here due to a miscalculation by Onyx, necessitating the use of the ramshackle team's special abilities and techniques to retrieve the loot💪🏻

Compared to the other book, this story is more exciting and dynamic. It offers us a complete picture of the situation of those who escaped the tyrant during the Great Betrayal, as well as those who remained to hide and suffer in order to survive, both before and after the Purge.
I must say that I enjoyed the story of Gea and Onyx much more. They are two souls forged by war and the torment of the human race, and only one of them was able to live a decent life. The stories of the discrimination victims who lived with Gea were touching and enlightening, too! They provided a clearer picture of why they only reacted to violence, rather than initiating it as the old tales have led human people to believe👀

Now I want to read the story about Onyx's sister. Let's close the triangle, please🥺

Amazing world building, character growth, and storytelling!

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book, but it was SO easy to become hooked. First, the world building was honestly so good! I adored the way each character felt like a distinct person with their own feelings/background.

I also really enjoyed the way characters developed. Personally, the character growth of Onyx, Gea, and Kaine struck me the most. I felt like their characters were the most fleshed out, and I appreciated how each of them had realistic arcs!

Last, of course, Gea and Onyx! I think their story pulled me in so quickly because although they felt destined from the start, they both earned each other in such a beautiful and realistic way! I loved their relationship from start to end, witty banter and all.

The plot was entertaining for me until about 80% through, where I found myself skipping through large segments just to see what happened next. Overall, super impressive writing, and I loved it!

Thank you so much for choosing me as an ARC Reader!

Book two of the Tales of Talero series is here and I was beyond excited to dive in and get reacquainted with Gea and Onyx all over again.
This story captures the essence of book 1 and keeps the story well alive and I couldn’t be more pleased! Meanwhile, Geo and Onxy have got more baggage than a luggage carousel, and you're dying to see them sort it out - highlighting a thick soup plot of war time, doses of mistrust, passion, and broken loyalties.
It’s exceptional writing brings a blast from the past! Most of the main crew from book one are back, intermingling new faces, new places, and a whole new spin on the King's demented ideals to rid the land of magic and non-humans. This sequel will have your heart pounding like a drum. Next one, please!

This is the second book in a planned series of books by Lauren S but, don’t get down if you haven’t read the first book, Bound by Hearts & Stone, you can read this as a standalone or as part of the book series!

I love Lauren’s writing! She keeps a fast pace, interesting and ever changing plot, and her spice… excuse me, ma’am.

This book! The characters - all mythical, but sadly living away from magic and becoming sick due to a horrid King - are so likable (well most of them… Ahem Cador).

Our FMC can fight, she’s strong and fierce! She’s had loss and trauma but, she shows growth and awareness throughout the development of the book, as do several side characters.

I recommend this book. It’s easy to read, enjoyable, and I can’t wait to find out who the next book will focus on!!

Bound by Hearts & Wings will release November 11, 2025.

Vibes: sat back and said “heart pounding… my heart is pounding.”
Nodded to myself and patted myself on the back (literally) for guessing the turn of events. Took bow.

I received this book as an ARC and I devoured it. I loved the first book, Bound by Hearts and Stone so I wasn't sure if this would live up to it. I was wrong. Book 2 surpassed Book 1 and exceeded my wildest expectations. Onyx and Gea may be my new favorite romantasy couple. I'll take an emotionally deep MMC who knows the strength of his woman over a shadow daddy any day. There's also something incredibly beautiful about the juxtaposition of a man essentially made of stone that is emotionally mature and present.

Long story short, don't miss out on this book. At this point, if Lauren Sanatra writes it I will read it without question.

First of all thank you so much Lauren for sending me an E-ARC copy of this novel! I was able to be part of her review team for Book 1 so I am so thrilled to continue this story, return to Talero, and meet our new FMC and cast of new additions!

As always despite being sent a novel that will never alter or influence my true honest feelings on the novel.

**𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝟐 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐬 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝟏 𝐬𝐨 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐮𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭!**

I genuinely enjoyed this novel! Onyx was a character that I loved since reading Bound By Hearts & Stones (Book 1). He uses his charm, his appeal, and his humor in many ways, sometimes to hide his feelings, sometimes to fit the role he feels he was meant to be. But he is quite smart and I really loved the way Gea not only challenged him but supported him in his wit.

I feel like this pairing was one quite literally crafted for each other. Written in the stars before they even knew it. Seeing so much mutual trauma from the same situations and some that mirror each other and finding a love within the darkness and pain of the past is a beautiful thing.

I loved all of our new additional characters. They all held their own and just like all of Lauren’s characters thus far from the Tales of Talero series, they all stood out in their own ways.

This novel is a far bit spicier in my opinion than the first book. But I am not complaining, I feel like Onyx is just a bit more forward in that aspect. So I loved every bit of the passion, tension, and spice between these two. Underneath all the heat was genuine love as well, not just attraction or lust.

Lauren’s world is one filled with so much love and hope, found family, finding your heart and soul. I am so happy to be able to return to Talero again, I cannot wait to keep returning to this magical whimsical world of hers. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your team once more, I cannot wait for Book 3 and every other story within this universe.

Happy Release Day!

𝙒𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙄 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙙: Yes. This novel is a bit spicier than Book 1 and a touch longer. But it has been so lovely to read. I loved Onyx when I met him in Book 1 so being able to see his story unfold with Gea was a treat. This novel would be best for someone who enjoys spice, a really good story, and loveable characters.

𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙄 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨: Absolutely. I have been able to be part of Lauren’s team for both of her Talero novels now, so I definitely would love to continue reading this series and continue exploring Talero. I feel like this world is so vast and can have so many amazing stories hidden within it.

Arc Review
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

I was lucky enough to message the author while reading, and let me just say, Lauren is awesome. This is the second book in the Tales of Talero series. They can be read as standalones, but now that I’ve finished this one, I’ll definitely be going back to read the first!

I don’t usually read romantasy, and fantasy books can sometimes lose me in the beginning with all the worldbuilding, but Lauren did a great job keeping the pace interesting. Yes, it starts a bit slow (as most fantasy does), but she mixes in enough action and tension that I was hooked before I knew it. The build-up between Gea (half fae, half human) and Onyx (a gargoyle!) was next-level. Almost kisses, lingering eye contact, tension so thick you could feel it, perfection.

And that chemistry?? Whew. I didn’t think a fight scene could have that much romantic tension, but apparently it can. The spice scenes aren’t constant, but the ones we do get are top-notch 🥵. The romance could technically be called enemies-to-lovers, though they don’t stay enemies long. It’s also a fated mates story, which gives their connection this deep, emotional pull that completely sucked me in. I’d call it a slow burn, but that might just be my impatience talking, I was dying for them to finally get together!

The side characters were fantastic, too. Jet and Evolette (from book one), Torren (who frustrated me but I need to know more about), Drex and Asha (adorable!), Kaine (dark, twisty, possible redemption arc, yes, please), and Iris (who came out of nowhere and totally stole scenes). Every one of them added something special to the story.

The worldbuilding was rich and consistent, full of unique magic, lore, and different species’ mating customs that felt so creative. The writing style is emotional and descriptive, with longer paragraphs and chapters than I’m used to, but it was completely worth it.

By the end, I was feeling all the emotions, satisfied, but also desperate for more. I’m already counting down until the next book!

I’d recommend Bound by Hearts & Wings to anyone who loves:
✨ Fated mates
✨ Emotional tension, magic, and action
✨ A bit of spice done right

O. M. G. This book had me in a chokehold the whole time! We first met Onyx in book 1, Bound by Hearts and Stone but if you haven’t read that one, don’t let that stop you from reading this one! It’s part of an interconnecting series but can totally be read as a standalone (although I highly recommend Book 1 as well)!!

The world building and attention to ALL details was so phenomenal! I felt like I was apart of this world the whole time I was reading it and kept finding myself in awe of Lauren’s writing.

All of the characters were so well written and described that you really feel like you know these people on a personal level! The “side” characters are amazing in their own right and I really look forward to the other books that are to come so I can get even more of them!

Gea and Onyx are such strong main characters… Gea: as the half human, half fae badass who fights for everyone even when she herself was so broken by others. Onyx: who isn’t just the brute gargoyle who’s only good for violence, but also has a mind whose depths no one really seems to understand… until Gea. While they seemed to be fated for one another, the fact that they took time to learn one another and CHOSE their path really struck me as beautiful. Their whole story is so full of strength, determination and love!

I have a theory that has yet to be answered so I’ll be eagerly awaiting book 3!

✨ARC Review✨

“A hundred years ago, Talero burned.”

Bound by Hearts & Wings is the kind of fantasy romance that aches. It’s brutal and tender all at once, filled with broken people, buried histories, and a love that blooms in the shadows of ruin.

Gea and Onyx stole my heart in completely different ways. Gea, fierce and guarded but still capable of quiet compassion. Onyx, all rough edges and regret, learning what it means to lead…and to feel. Their connection isn’t instant, it’s earned. A slow burn born of trust, survival, and that sharp, inevitable pull between two people who should be enemies.

The world building is lush and haunting. It’s a fractured realm of mountains, caverns, and forgotten magic. The tension between humans, fae, and gargoyles gives everything this heavy, lived-in realism that makes the stakes feel real. Every page hums with longing, danger, and the fragile hope of something better.

This book is for readers who love reluctant allies to lovers, gritty fantasy worlds, and romance that hurts in all the best ways. It’s a story about healing, defiance, and finding light in the dark.

Because sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is choose love when the world tells you not to.

Lauren Sanatra’s Bound by Hearts and Wings sweeps back into the Tales from the Crystal Heart Caverns with a tenderness and fire that outshines even its predecessor. This installment focuses on a new pairing that captures every ounce of the grumpy x sunshine magic I adore—balanced perfectly with delicious tension, reluctant partnership, and emotional vulnerability.Sanatra excels at writing complex, beautifully broken characters. The exploration of trauma and healing never feels shallow; it’s raw and layered, especially with the plus-size and PTSD representation woven naturally into the story’s heart. The emotional beats between moments of betrayal and trust hit hard, while the slow-burn romantic buildup left me simultaneously wrecked and swooning. The pacing is smoother than book one, and the worldbuilding continues to deepen, revealing more magic, creatures, and secrets within the Crystal Heart Caverns. The “found family” theme ties everything together, giving warmth amid the darker undertones. In short: this book is emotional, spicy, and deeply human—even when its characters have wings. Fans of monster romantasy, forced alliances, and slow-burn mate bonds will absolutely devour it.

A tale of found family and the struggle to protect those they love from evil. Bound by Hearts and Wings was different than most fantasy stories I usually read. In most fantasy series all races band together to save the world. In this book though it is humans who are the villains led by a tyrant king who seeks to punish and kill the others who share this world with them. Then you have the group of fae, goblins, orcs, and a troll that work to fight against this king and the humans who follow him. The two main characters for this book are Gea and Onyx. Gea is a half-human, half-fae and with all her strength and courage she was an incredible FMC. From her beginning in a dungeon to her meeting Onyx you could tell how strong she had to stay to survive. Onyx is a gargoyle and while he is not my favorite MMC (not a fan of of guy who thinks they are so handsome it makes them arrogant and believe they are a gift to women) his love for Gea does feel true and pure. I’m trying not spoil too much, but if you love a good fantasy mission to save the world with a HEA then this book is for you.

Overall a fun continuation of this romantasy series continuing to color the works of Talero and the various magical creatures living there.

I really do like the world and the story in this series but I find the romances to consistently feel rushed and insta love. I imagine some of that is necessary since each story follows different characters but I have read other series with a similar structure that don’t feel quite as quick, which is why I’m sticking with 3.5⭐️

The reason I rounded up is because I also like how this story set us up for a bunch of different directions for the next book with multiple characters I would love to explore more

However, the story and over arching plot are definitely there so if you are looking for something romance forward and a bit more spicy heavy (🌶️🌶️🌶️) this is definitely worth checking out!

Includes skme of my favorite tropes being: found family and touch her and die

Also had some good PTSD, disability, and anxiety/panic representation! I did really like how these were discussed and woven throughout this story

I haven't even read book one yet and bookd two has certainly exceeded my expectations.
onxy and gea are my new favourite lover characters. I think onxy is my 5th new book boyfriend oh dear.
The love of onxy and gea gave me all the feels for there love story. I love the realistic way they fell in love with each other.
I just couldn't wait to get to the end of the book to see them grow. Gea half fea and human was in darkness her character is far cruelty and survival mode.
Until Gai meet with onxy and there bond grows and danger rises above. Gea and onxy fight side by side torn between loyalty and longing, fate and freedom.
For them falling in love wasn't part of the plan apparently well it was.
Grab your copy of the book it one for your tbr certainly didn't disappoint that why I gave boom 5/ 5.

This is the second book in Lauren S’s series, but don’t stress if you haven’t read the first one, you can enjoy this as a standalone too! I adore Lauren’s writing style. The pacing is quick, the plot keeps you on your toes, and the spice… excuse me! 🥵The story pulls you right in. The characters are all mythical beings cut off from their magic and suffering under a terrible king. The FMC is such a badass. So strong, fierce, and can absolutely handle herself. She’s been through a lot, but you really see her grow and heal throughout the book and some of the side characters do too. Overall, I totally recommend this one. It’s easy to read, super engaging, and I already can’t wait to see who the next book is about!

I loved this book so much! After reading the first one, I have been dying for another one and it was definitely worth the wait. It took me a long time to read this book only because I didn’t want it to end. I don’t see many gargoyle love stories out there and this author definitely makes up for that. I was so curious how this story would lay out and I definitely think it could continue with the trials and life after the fact! It might even be fun to get a point of view from a merfolk! I saw so much character development with onyx and I loved who he has become! This book was very good and I would definitely recommend reading the first book and then this book after!!

Great read! Just when you get comfortable there’s a twist to throw you. I’m excited to read more in this series.
“I’ll take care of our people. You take care of your person.”
Onyx leads his own raid for the first time, but he doesn’t expect the other species he thought were dead to show up. When he saves one of them and nearly dies he ends up in a dungeon being questioned for his species. When he finally gains there trust and shows he’s more than just a wall of muscle Gea drops her guard and lets him in. Will they grow to love each other? Will the past come back to haunt them? Will plots and betrayals be their end? Can they save each other?

I’m so invested in this story and these characters. I’m super curious how the next book is going to play out. I love Onyx and Gea so much. I wasn’t sure if I’d love them as much as Jet and Evolette from the first book but I absolutely did! They both have such complicated histories and secrets. It’s very entertaining watching the characters mesh together.

The world is captivating and all the different Fae species are so fun to read about. The last quarter of the book had me turning (swiping) the pages so fast. The ending definitely has me ready for the next book!

The Tales of Talero journey continues!

I met Author Lauren Sanatra at a book signing earlier this year and this Author is quickly becoming one of my favorites! I was blown away by the story telling and world building as we continue our journey into the world of Talero. And I am just thrilled there are Gargoyles! 🤭 But not only Gargoyles, other non-humans! (You'll just have to read to find out which ones!! 😉) This book has missions and fights of survival, AND Onyx and Gea! 🥰 I could not read the pages fast enough, just wanting to see what would happen next.

Be Still My Heart

This is easily one of my favorite romantasy books I have read in the past few years and has rightfully earned its spot in my personal collection. The fantasy plot is excellent and really sucks you in. The characters are incredibly well developed and diverse and so easy to love. The bits of spice thrown in are delectable but not overkill. It truly does balance perfectly into a genuine 5 star read. I couldn't recommend it more. For anyone who was in love with Goliath from Gargoyles as a kid, this is what your heart has been missing.

4.75 Stars Bound by Hearts and Wings by Lauren Sanatra

If you love a spicy slow-burn, found family, who can you trust type romantasy, this book needs to be top on your list! This book entices all the emotions and further expands the world I came to love in Sanatra’s first book of this series; Bound by Hearts and Stone. While most of the main characters from book one are present, this story envelops you with new characters and a different perspective of what happened when the King tried to completely rid the land of magic and non-humans. Geo and Onxy both have their own hardened histories to overcome and you yearn for them to do so together. Add in betrayal, war, love, and continual issues with trust and this book literally will have your heart racing. I can’t wait for the next one!

This book could have been so much shorter. The first 20% or so could have been condensed much more than it was.

I enjoyed the world and the characters, but I just couldn’t get over the incredibly drawn-out start. If this hadn’t been an ARC read for me, I probably would have DNF’d. Again, it was a solid book, but it could have been 500 pages instead of nearly 700.

It was one of those books where you could kinda tell what was going to happen a mile away, but it always happened in a slightly different way than you thought.

I found the FMC to be slightly unbearable, but she did redeem herself in the end.

I am not sure I will continue this series.

Huge thanks to the Author for the ARC!

Bound by Hearts & Wings is such a solid second book in the Tales of Talero series. Honestly, it lived up to every bit of the hype from the first one. Lauren Sanatra has done an incredible job expanding the world here—it felt so natural, and I was honestly just sucked in from the very first page.

The world-building is easily one of my favorite parts. Sanatra really makes the setting feel alive, especially when exploring the fallout of the Purge and how it’s messed things up for the gargoyles and everyone else in hiding. It really builds on what we learned in book one but cranks the stakes up to a point where I was genuinely worried about everyone.

And can we talk about Gea and Onyx? I loved both of them. They have such distinct personalities, and that slow-burn romance? Perfection. It didn’t feel rushed or forced at all—it was built on a foundation of mistrust and old loyalties that had to be broken down first, which made it feel so much more real. Watching them figure out how to trust each other while the world was basically falling apart around them was so rewarding.

At its heart, this is a story about forced alliances and trying to heal old wounds, and that connection between Gea and Onyx is what really kept me turning the pages.

If you’re into fantasy romance with world-building you can actually get lost in and chemistry that feels 100% genuine, you need to grab this. It’s got so much heart and is just a great example of character-driven storytelling.
