Claims and Curses

Rate this book
She’s the Alpha no one expected. He’s the Alpha who can’t resist.

Genesis Neo Highwater is the seventh daughter of the Alpha of Crystal Moon, a legacy pack with a centuries-long seat on the Prime 10 Council. But behind its legacy lies a looming two generations without male heirs, whispers of a curse, and a rising wave of rejected mate bonds threatening to bring the proud pack to its knees.

Determined to save her pack, her father names her heir, and Genesis presents an anti-rejection bill at the Annual Wolf Summit—where fate strikes with a mate bond she’s fought to avoid, and upends all her well-laid plans.

Genesis finds herself claimed by Sebastian Stone—a powerful Alpha who sits on the very Prime 10 Council that will decide her fate. And when the Council decides she and Sebastian will be the test subjects for her own anti-rejection bill, Genesis is thrown into a Mating Trial with a dangerously devoted mate who is as determined to claim his Luna as she is to claim her inheritance as the Alpha of Crystal Moon.

Bound by a fated bond unlike any before, Genesis and Sebastian must battle desire and duty—and decide if the struggle is worth the cost.

Claims and Curses is the first book in the A Scent of Moon and Madness series, a sweeping paranormal romantasy where Council politics collide with fated mate bonds, and where passion is as dangerous as power.

Set in a richly layered modern world ruled by ancient traditions, sacred bloodlines, two species of wolves, and a Lycan King who governs them all, this saga blends primal heat, heart-wrenching devotion, and political intrigue into one.

With over 140,000 words of immersive world-building and emotional depth, this story offers fast-burning spice that ignites instantly, paired with slow-burn emotional unraveling that will leave you aching for more.

Join Genesis, her sisters, and their daughters in a six-book saga that redefines what it means to love, lead, and survive in a world ruled by fate and shadowed by the Crystal Moon Curse.

I really liked the world this author has created!!
If you know me, you know how much I love a werewolf story and this one was pretty good, but I didn't always enjoy the love story, it was so frustrating at times...

Genesis 'Neo' is to be the Alpha of her pack, but there has never been a female Alpha before.. Her pack has been through some hard times, there hasn't been a male born into her pack for forty years and after her two sisters were rejected by their mates, there's has been a surge of rejections.. Neo wants be accepted by the council as the rightful Alpha of her pack and is determined to pass a bill to stop all the rejections.. But, she meets her mate, who's also an Alpha and they are to be the first to test the bill, a three month trial that is about to put a wrench into all her carefully laid plans.. They both want to lead their packs, but how can they both be the Alpha and the Luna.. She's fighting the bond, he's all in, but will they found the way to be together and get what they both want..

Neo was independent and fierce and so determined and she didn't let anyone tell her she couldn't do something. She was an amazing leader, she did so much for her pack, but she really was too stubborn.. I really loved her drive, but she wasn't always a great partner.. I was so frustrated at her and the way she kept running instead of having an honest conversation at the beginning. I understand her apprehension, I really do, but she went too far at times..
Sebastian was supportive and always so sure of the bond and he really did try do get close to Neo, but sometimes he didn't really understand her. He did deserve better than the hurt she sometimes inflicted, but he wasn't perfect either.. He had some questionable reactions too, but I do think he was trying much harder than she did..

Look, I really understand what the author was trying to do, but for me, personally, it didn't land well. They were constantly doing the same exact dance. They would be in a good place then something would happen that would undo all the progress they achieved and then they would fix it, just to have another thing happen and so on.. It felt like an never ending cycle and I got tired of it.. I really wanted to love them, but they both started to get on my nerves.. They had some really amazing moments and the marking was so special, but it would always be ruined by what came next.. I never had enough time to enjoy them being great together because the next fight was right around the corner and I hated it.. It really wasn't necessary.. They did have amazing chemistry and the spicy scenes were really good, but it took them a long time to learn how to communicate properly. I loved the ending, it was perfectly executed, they finally found the middle ground that worked for them, I just wish they communicated better sooner.

I really liked Neo's pack, they adapted amazingly to a situation that wasn't easy and I especially loved her parents and sisters. That one storyline made me cry... I hope we'll learn more about her sisters, their packs and their dynamic.
I'm excited for Eva's and Freya's story, but I'm not the biggest fan of Dante.. I'm a little nervous for the next book..
Also, Trent was hilarious, I really loved his friendship with Sebastian.

The world and the way it was created was the best part. I really have a soft spot for any world that has a female Alpha, but I feel like an Alpha should always treat his or hers partner as an equal and that wasn't always the case here and that was the main problem I had with it..
I'm very excited for the rest of the series though, I really want to learn more about this world and can't wait to see what the author has in store for us.

*Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC.*

Wow I loved this wolfshifter romantasy💜 Fast paced, good world building, great writing style. Loved the characters and the banter made me laugh out loud multiple times. The MMC is great and he truly is crazy for her. The FMC is my favorite character. Talking about fierce and badass. She knows what she wants and goes after it. Despise being a girl and fated to an Alpha. Absolutely loved her!! Can't wait for the second book in the series. Highly recommend this book!!

A really fun return to werewolf shifter romance. I haven’t picked up a shifter book in a while, but this one reminded me exactly why the trope is so addictive.

The banter and spice were excellent, and I loved the dynamic between a strong, capable FMC and an MMC who wasn’t intimidated by her power—instead, he genuinely admired and supported it. Their relationship was surprisingly sweet alongside all the tension, and the yearning between them was especially well done.

The political elements and pack dynamics added depth and kept things interesting, and I’m definitely excited to continue the series.

Overall though, this was an engaging, spicy, and enjoyable read that makes me keen to see where the rest of the series goes.

A big thank you to the author and The Berry Agency for an eARC!

MINOR SPOILERS!
That said, the ending left me a little conflicted—spoilers—I wasn’t a huge fan of it concluding with a pregnancy when the FMC herself was still uncertain about when/wanting children, and I also wish the MMC had been more confident and openly proud about wearing her mark rather than insecure about it.

Whew.. I did not realise how spicy this was going to be, or how addictive! I sat down and read this over the weekend, and could not stop reading.
Neo and Sebastian's romance was so well written, and the way both characters matured and learnt to communicate throughout the book was so refreshing. They went from being on two incredibly different levels to being one united team. The way Neo learned to open up and share her burden, and Sebastian opened his mind to more modern ideas. Their chemistry in the spicy scenes was top-tier.
I thoroughly enjoyed the concept of the Wolves being a separate "being" from their human. Still, the two can communicate and act as one being. The world-building explains the pack structure, the hierarchy of this world and the different packs, which was very helpful.

The feminism in this book also spoke volumes, and all the work Neo and her pack did was so interesting to delve into. I didn't need the attack that happens about 80% into the book; I would have been more than happy continuing to focus the story on Neo and her journey to becoming an Alpha, but I understand the reasoning behind including it.

Overall, this was a very quick read but one that kept you interested the whole way through, and I would highly recommend it. I cannot wait to start book 2, and then saw there is going to be a book for each Highwater sister, I was so excited.

This book was an amazing read and captivated me from the get go.
The world building is done very well, the writing is beautiful, strong and full of emotion.
Neo, is such a tough, bad-ass female lead - which we all love! And Sebastian is the perfect mix of strong yet supportive and completely obsessed male lead - again, which we love :)
The side characters are so likeable and bring so much depth to the story. It just wouldn‘t be the same without them.
The spice is on fire, and the actual storyline is so interesting and full of suspense. It kept me on my toes guessing the while time.
This book follows one couple and is a standalone in a series of interconnected stories following different couples we meet in the first book.
I can‘t wait to continue the series!

Absolutely loved Genesis and Sebastian's story! Grabs you from page one! I love the action, drama and spice! Genesis sure doesn't make it easy for Sebastian. Genesis doesn't have it easy either being the first alpha female and to be running her pack. The council is very traditional though and not ready for the changes Genesis starts! A pack that becomes a majority of females wolves due to their mates rejecting them for no good reasons! I love the trial mating that Sebastian and Genesis get to trial run! I can't wait for book 2!

I've read my fair share of shifter romance and I enjoy it. This one is probably the best one I've read in recent years.

Fated mates, rejected mates (side characters), challenges, wolf calling to wolf, wolf fights, tortured souls - it's got it all. On top of that, it has a female Alpha - which I loved. The way the politics work was so well described. I enjoyed the world they inhabited, while similar to some I have read, it was different enough to pull me in & get me invested target than being another filler book like a lot of shifter books are for me.

Neo Genesis and her sisters are my new favourite werewolves and I can't wait to read their stories!

I enjoyed this so much. It was fast paced and pretty spicy. I loved the character development with both main characters, even though the story hooked me from the beginning I wasn’t crazy about either main character at first but the way they grew and evolved was beautiful. The plot to spice ratio was surprisingly good for an insta-lust wolf shifter fated mates book, and the feminine rage was so well done. I can’t wait to read book 2.
Thank you to the Berry Agency and Bree Rosebury for the opportunity to arc read this! All opinions in this are my own

Summary:
FMC has been named Alpha of her pack. MMC is to be named an alpha as soon as he finds his luna. He knows that he scent matched with the FMC years ago. However, it is known that the FMC does not want a mate. This is a story of what happens when you get what you didn't think you wanted. Add in some political games and it is an awesome shifter romance.

Review:
Finally, a strong female alpha I can love. I am so tired of books being promoting a strong woman only to be disappointed. Not the case in this book. The author takes you on a journey in which you fully understand both the FMC and MMC. You will cheer for the FMC and really want the MMC to get it together and recognize the gift that he has been given. You will also see and hear about the FMCs sister and others.

It is a journey worth taking and one you will want to reread over and over again. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Arc review out 1st December

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

She’s the Alpha no one expected. He’s the Alpha who can’t resist.

Ahhh I loved this book so much! Genesis Neo is the 7th daughter of the Alpha of Crystal Moon, a pack with a seat on the Prime 10 Council. For 40 years Crystal Moon has only produced daughters and now everyone thinks they are cursed. When she is drawn to her mate Sebastian, an Alpha of Blood Stone she is torn between desire and her duty.

I was instantly hooked with this book, the first chapter reeled me in and I did not want to stop reading. This book is all about girl power, feminine rage and fighting for what you deserve, especially when you are a woman. Neo is such a badass and honestly one of my favourite FMCs, she will do anything for her pack and carries all of their hurt with herself.

But don’t get me started on Sebastian 🥰 he is a male obsessed and I am here for it. He is instantly captivated by Neo and although he can be a bit of a golden retriever he also knows what he wants and how to get it. He also isn’t afraid to admit when he is wrong.

Also the spice in this book is 🥵 it will not disappoint.

I am so excited that I also have book 2 which releases on the same day as book 1 so am able to dive straight in. This will be a 6 book series that each focuses on a different Highwater sister, book 2 is Ava and Dante and at this point I have no idea how he is going to redeem himself after book 1.

2 stars may seem bad however since this was my first ever werewolf read, and I’ve come to the conclusion that this genre might not be for me! However I wanted to continue reading this because I thought the plot line was genuinely very interesting. The world building of the Crystal Moon pack was well thought out and I liked the addition of rights for she-wolves during heat. I think conversations such as those are so important in books and I liked how it showed reactions from both sides of the argument. This book is pure girl power which was so lovely to read!

Sebastian is the definition of a male wife (as he should be). His character development throughout was good and necessary. Neo was the strong powerful woman lead who didn’t back down from her opinions despite the ridicule of the male alphas. This queen!

There was a crazy amount of smut which is good if you like that. the romance progressed fast with many necessary hurdles and push and pull, which I thought was valid since they didn’t really know each other until they mated.

All in all I thought the plot line was great and definitely an interesting read if the werewolf genre is your kinda thing!

I really loved this book. It’s a strong, confident start to the series and immediately stands out with its focus on power, politics, and choice alongside the fated mate trope. Genesis is a refreshing lead—determined, intelligent, and unapologetic about wanting both her inheritance and her independence. Watching her step into a role no one expected felt earned and compelling.

The Council politics and anti-rejection bill add real weight to the story, giving it stakes beyond the romance. I especially enjoyed how the Mating Trial is used not just as a romantic device, but as a test of leadership, belief, and resolve. Sebastian is intense and devoted without overshadowing Genesis, and their dynamic balances tension, desire, and mutual respect.

The world-building is rich but easy to follow, blending ancient traditions with a modern setting in a way that feels natural. With its mix of political intrigue, fated bonds, and emotional depth, Claims and Curses is an engaging and well-paced introduction that left me eager to continue the series.

I was captured from the start, the story (plot) had a great flow, and love the werewolves!
Neo’s strong fierce character bound to the powerful Alpha Sebastian, and how they try to still the wolves inside.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, unfortunately, I did not feel the closeness of the werewolf pack families, relationships with Neo’s older sisters especially their feelings towards her being chosen Alpha. It’s a pity the author didn’t explore the wolf pack’s way of life more, maybe that with human interactions... why they don’t have litters, is this their human side? what does the human side think of the hunting?
I missed Neo’s father’s involvement seeing as he coached her for 21years to become Alpha, such as when she had to fight Dante, Quill could have given some pointers & reassurances.

Overall, a really good read!

Claims and Curses is the kind of debut that makes you instantly sit up and think, "Oh, this series is about to own me." Bree Rosebury builds a world that’s rich, immersive, and buzzing with tension, you know the kind that pulls you in before you even realise you’ve fallen headfirst into the story.

The characters are magnetic, the magic system feels fresh, and the pacing hits that addictive rhythm where every chapter demands just one more. And as someone who lives for the fated‑mates trope, let me tell you: this book does. not. disappoint. The chemistry is electric, the pull between the characters is irresistible, and the emotional stakes land exactly where they should.

For a first installment, it’s confident, clever, and full of promise. If this is how the journey begins, I’m already desperate for book two, and so very glad I have my hands on it already...

ARC READ - 3.5 stars

I quite enjoyed this book and the romance between the characters! I think the bond that Genesis and Sebastian was so sweet!! The underlying message about women being capable of anything they set their mind too was also woven in there really well

Ultimately i rate it a 3.5 stars because I do feel it lacked in some parts, I did not feel such a connection to the wolf packs and the way they work and the ins and the outs of the world! I am hoping as the series continues we learn more about the world because there is some really good potential there

Overall it was a fun read and i’m so thankful to have the opportunity to review it!! Can’t wait to see how the second book pans out!!!

I fell in love with Sebastian and Genesis from the very first chapter. I couldn’t put this book down and quickly became invested in every character and the storyline as a whole. Genesis is strong-willed and stubborn, refusing to back down in a male-dominated world of Alphas. Sebastian is powerful and commanding, yet endlessly supportive of her in every way.

It takes Genesis some time to realize that Sebastian is the one who completes her. She goes from running from him to running toward him, and together they become inseparable—a united team who provides unwavering support for one another. The chemistry and spice between them was fantastic, and I absolutely cannot wait to dive into the next book in the series.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! Hooked from page one all the way until the end.
Loved the push and pull between Genesis and Sebastian. No slow burn while still having the yearning which I love to see (I have no patience for a slow burn 😂)
Great themes of women in power which isn’t too “in your face” or forced. The issues surrounding women being forced to abide by what men deem as “the right way” seen in the Lunex trial situation was very well incorporated into the story. Loved seeing Genesis grow into who she was meant to be and not letting anyone stand in her way. She’s a girl who knows what she wants !!

You cannot outrun fate when it runs for you. If Alpha Genesis didn’t stand a chance against fate neither will you. I was entranced with this story and the characters from page 1. The way that Bree wrote about the upending of well laid plans and the beauty that lies within chaos. These characters battle their hearts for their duty in the most enchanting way. The world building was enticing and made me lose myself in the pages. I was squealing at the witty seductive banter and spicy scenes that unfurled seemingly before my eyes.

This is smut with a somewhat sweet story to follow. I enjoyed reading it even with all the religious undertones. What I hate is that it ends with pregnancy. The whole book has a subplot about giving women a pill so that it’s their choice only to end with a baby? Not cool. Also I want Eves book now. She deserves a happy ending.

Claims and Curses by Bree Rosebury is a heart fluttering, spicy start to the Scent of Moon and Madness series.

Genesis (Neo) and Sebastian’s love story really hit me in all the right places. Watching Genesis step into herself by acknowledging her strength as an Alpha while also learning how she fits into her role as Sebastian's Luna, was empowering. Her personal growth sits beautifully alongside the romance, and Sebastian complements her journey in a way that made their relationship feel emotionally grounded.

The spice level is high 🌶️, sometimes bordering on over the top for my personal taste, but it’s undeniably well written and very much part of the book’s identity. Even when it felt a little excessive, I still found myself fully invested because the story and world-building were strong enough to carry it.

Overall, I really enjoyed it: immersive world-building, strong romantic tension, and boiling-hot spice wrapped around a heroine finding her power. A solid 4-star read, and I’m definitely curious to see where the rest of the series goes.

The writing flowed well, the pacing kept me turning pages, and I loved the way the world and pack dynamics were built out. It’s definitely one I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys werewolf or fated-mates romances.
