This was a nice, enjoyable, easy read. The focus is on Poppy and her interest in the Scarlet Highwayman, and also her involvement with Mason, who is a historian doing research on the Scarlet Highwayman. They’re both attracted to each other, while at the same time not wanting to have a new relationship, both having a bit of an internal conflict. They work together in finding out more about the Scarlet Highwayman and also encounter a bit of opposition. As we read, we are intrigued to find out more about who this Scarlet Highwayman could be, and wonder how Poppy and Mason’s relationship will turn out.

I read this mainly for the mystery aspect of the story rather than the romance side. I enjoyed the way the mystery developed with insights being gradually revealed. The romance side of things did seem a bit cheesy at times and I could have done with less of it, but it was okay, and to be expected in a book that is in the romance genre, so can’t really fault it for that. I enjoyed the little details involved in setting the scene, including what people ate for their meals, for some reason I found that interesting!

This book would be best for people who enjoy both romance and mild mysteries. It is a nice story and an easy read with everything tying up nicely at the end.

This is another automatic read author for me. With her books feeling so warm and welcoming with such friendly characters I can't miss out.
Set in the Scottish Highlands I always look forward to these books.
Poppy has her life planned out and it doesn't involve returning to the Scottish Highlands. With her parent's vacation cottages losing money she has to step in and help out with the family business though and she has a plan for turning around the cottages.
Mason is a historian and he's in the Scottish Highlands for research. As he and Poppy work together, she's drawn to his good looks and the interesting historical information he provides.
I really enjoyed the tale of the highwayman and the history of the castle, forbidden love and the roses. There is a lot of fascinating old history to uncover and I was there for all of it.
History, mystery and romance. You really can't go wrong. with this intriguing story.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

Poppy is a struggling artist with an unhealthy obsession with the 'Scarlet Highwayman'. When she returns home to visit her family she inadvertently volunteers herself to rejuvenate the family holiday cottages.

When historian Mason comes looking for more information about the Scarlet Highwayman, Poppy is instantly drawn to him.

I really loved this story. It's very escapist and I longed to be there in one of the highland cottages. I enjoyed the mystery aspect of the story and liked the romance aspect of it too.

I thought Poppy was a great character, I love how she threw herself into renovating the cottages to try to get over her past heartbreak. I liked the historical elements about the highwayman.

The Secret Castle in the Highlands took me on a fascinating escape. The mixture of second chances, change of direction, reconnecting with family, and buried secrets grabbed me from the opening pages.

Poppy was a delight. I could feel her energy vibrating throughout the book and rooted for her the whole time. We are not alike, as I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, but Julie Shackman’s descriptions of the cottage makeovers and her paintings created a clear image in my mind. What I really loved was seeing Poppy’s family ties strengthen. They weren’t weak, but time away from home had shifted her focus. Her self-doubt was relatable, while her determination was inspiring.

Mason was an interesting character. I wasn't sure whether to trust him at first, but he soon proved himself reliable, if not necessarily romance material. Like most people, he had a history, which was gently revealed. It didn’t take long for me to warm to him and change my thoughts.

As ever with Julie’s books, there is a strong sense of community woven into the pages, and the supporting cast is terrific. I felt at home with the holiday cottages and would happily visit, if only they existed outside of Julie’s imagination.

There’s an intriguing mystery to follow, but as I don’t include spoilers, you’ll need to grab a copy to learn more.

Highly recommended.

My thoughts:
Poppy has her heart set on carrying her family legacy. The family business was holiday cottages which have fallen into array.
She meets Mason who is a historian. His interest lies in finding information about a local villain.
The mystery aspect was interesting as there was so much historical information shared.
The romance aspect was there but not very prominent. I wanted a bit more going on between Poppy and Mason.
Overall, a fun Scottish mystery with a bit of romance.

The Secret Castle in the Highlands is the latest wonderfully escapist romance from Julie Shackman.

Poppy Summers had a plan for her future – one which didn’t involve returning to the Scottish Highlands. However, when she discovers that her parents’ beloved holiday cottages are losing money, she knows that she has no other choice but to temporarily leave behind her new life to do everything in her power to save the business from going under and fight for her parents’ legacy. Romance is the very last thing on Poppy’s mind. She intends to give the cottages a new lease of life and is dedicating all her time and energy into revamping them. A distraction is the very last thing she wants or needs – until she crosses paths with Mason Cooper…

Mason is a historian with a passion for the past who has been drawn to the highlands for research. Feeling as if he has found a kindred spirit in Poppy, the two soon develop a friendship that could lead to something deeper. Poppy was meant to the in the highlands for the summer. But will Mason give her a reason to stick around for the foreseeable future? Or will the lure of her old life end up costing Poppy a chance to be truly happy with him?

An uplifting contemporary romance from Julie Shackman guaranteed to melt every readers’ heart, The Secret Castle in the Highlands is a dreamy, compelling and feel-good charmer about second chances, going back home and falling in love that kept me entertained and enthralled until the very last page.

A gorgeous romantic read that is impossible to resist, The Secret Castle in the Highlands is another winner by Julie Shackman.

Poppy Summers moves back home to Port Star in Scotland to manage six old cottages set on a clifftop overlooking the seaside and the distant McKerron Castle. Poppy’s father had owned the cottages for 40 years and rented them out to families wanting a seaside holiday.

Poppy had been living in London and worked at an art gallery. When she wasn’t working Poppy spent time painting and researching the history of the Scarlet Highwayman who was reported to have committed crimes near Port Star. Poppy is painting his portrait and trying to find out who he really was.

Poppy and her sister-in-law Kattie are working together to update the cottage interiors.

Not long after Poppy returns home things get complicated. Mason Cooper is researching the Scarlet Highwayman to make a documentary and contacts Poppy for information and Alex Lapley is interested in what Poppy is telling Mason.

I loved the way Poppy and Mason delve into the history of the Scarlet Highwayman and the mysterious helper who sends secret messages to help them. A romance about families, artists and the secret identity of the Scalet Highwayman.

Lots of twists and turns as the secrets between the Summers and Lapley families are revealed.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. This is set to publish Aug 30.

The Secret Castle in the Highlands was a charming, quick summer read that kept me turning the pages. I really enjoyed the premise, and the Scottish Highlands made for a beautiful, atmospheric setting that was easy to get lost in.

One of my favorite aspects of the story was how it blended history with the present day. The historical elements, combined with a touch of mystery and a sweet romance, kept the story engaging and gave it more depth than a straightforward romance.

That said, I did feel the pacing occasionally slowed because of the lengthy descriptions of the décor, food, and surroundings. While they certainly helped paint a picture, I found myself wishing some of that space had been used to develop the main characters a little more. I never felt quite as emotionally connected to them as I would have liked.

Overall, this was an enjoyable escape with a gorgeous setting, an intriguing historical thread, and just enough mystery to keep things interesting. If you're looking for a light, feel-good read set in the Scottish Highlands, this is a solid choice.

The Secret Castle in the Highlands is the latest book by Julie Shackman, and if you love gentle romance with a little mystery, set in a gorgeous location in the Highlands, this is the perfect read for you.

I thought that Poppy was a fantastic character. Recovering from a break up, she went back home for a visit and ended up staying. Determined and intrepid, she swiftly ended up joining forces with Australian historian Mason, who was researching a local historical figure, the ‘Scarlet Highwayman’.

In between searching for information about the highwayman, she also renovated and revamped her parents holiday cottage business in order to prevent them from selling the business, which had previously been failing. I loved the descriptions of the cottages and the way in which Poppy and her sister in law used their art within the cottages.

At first I was unsure about Mason, but he definitely grew on me as the story progressed. I adored his dog, Darwin. I’m a complete sucker for a dog in a story, and he really was such a good boy!

In addition to the mystery of the highwayman, there were mysterious happenings in the present day, with the couple being helped and threatened by two parties, one who wanted the truth to come out and the other was keen to prevent the truth coming out.

This story felt different to Julie Shackman’s previous novels because it felt almost like a dual timeline historical fiction as we found out more information from the 18th Century. As a lover of dual timeline historical fiction I really loved that about the story, and felt that the author really captured the present and the past beautifully.

The Secret Castle in the Highlands was a sweet slow-burn of a romance immersed in a cosy mystery, with secrets and lies, betrayals and community at its’ core.

Prepare to escape to Scotland with a gorgeous feel-good romance this summer…Returning to the Scottish Highlands was never part of Poppy Summers’ plan. But life had other ideas.

My Opinion

The Secret Castle in the Highlands was an enjoyable read. The Secret Castle in the Highlands is the 11th book in the Scottish Escapes series but it can easily be read as a standalone. With a lovely setting and some charming characters this was a quick and easy read. A highly recommended read.

This is a real escape to the Scottish Highlands, full of community, family and secrets from the past. Poppy finds herself back in her childhood home, with a quest to relaunch and revamp the holiday cottages which have been in her family for years. This seems to be going along smoothly until an unwelcome visitor appears from the past, who seems to be threatening the future of the project. With her parents on an extended holiday, Poppy and her brother have been left to get on with it and she feels conscious that if they cannot succeed, the cottages may be lost to the family.

When Mason appears, Poppy feels a connection and a friendship developing despite her misgivings. Poppy is determined to avoid any relationships after a disastrous marriage but she is ready for a new start. The nearby castle adds interest to the setting and a reason for Mason's presence and research. The setting is gorgeous and underpins this uplifting and warm story.
In short: secrets and romance

My second book in this series, and once again Julie Shackman made the Scottish Highlands sound like somewhere I should immediately be booking a holiday.

I really liked Poppy, especially the creative side of her personality. Watching her use her painting and decorating skills while helping with her family's holiday cottages was fun, but I enjoyed the quieter family story just as much. Coming home gives her a chance to reconnect with people she loves and think about what she actually wants from her life.

Mason took a little longer to win me over. I wasn't sure I trusted him at first or even wanted him as Poppy's romantic interest, but learning more about his history changed my mind.

There's also a castle mystery to unravel, plenty of community around Poppy, and holiday cottages I desperately wish were real because I would absolutely stay there.

As usual in my reviews, I will not rehash the plot or publisher's blurb.

This is an enjoyable light read, mainly set in the delightful-sounding "Port Starr" in Scotland.

Our heroine (Poppy), a talented artist, returns home to Scotland and persuades her parents to let her try and turn around their moribund holiday lettings business. Forming an alliance with an historian (Mason) who is researching into the background of "The Scarlet Highwayman" (Poppy's history "crush") leads to interesting discoveries...

The author writes believable characters with authentic dialogue - as usual there is more than a hint of romance...

This book is the latest book in an ongoing series of "Scottish Escapes", so if you haven't read those already, you might enjoy them!

This would make an ideal holiday read.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC. All opinions my own.

Sweet, cozy, and full of Scottish charm, The Secret Castle in the Highlands follows Poppy Summers as she returns home to save her family's struggling holiday cottage business. Along the way she teams up with Mason, a historian chasing the story of a local legendary villain, and their partnership brings a fun little mystery into the mix alongside the romance. The Highlands setting is gorgeous and really pulls you in, and the historical thread adds a nice bit of intrigue. The romance itself is fairly gentle, more slow simmer than swoony, so if you're hoping for a lot of heat between Poppy and Mason, there's not a ton here, though their chemistry is sweet. Part of an ongoing Scottish Escapes series, this is a lovely, easy holiday read with likable characters and a real sense of place. Perfect for a relaxing summer afternoon!

When Poppy finds out that her parents have decided to sell their struggling holiday cottages in her home town in Scotland she offers to run them for a year to see if she can turn them around. There she meets Mason, a historian who is investigating a highwayman linked to the town, a subject that Poppy is also obsessed with.
This is an interesting mix of a potential romance between Poppy and Mason, which does blow hot and cold, against a historical mystery going back to the 18th century. Poppy is a struggling artist, a talent that unfortunately don't possess, but it was good to have an insight into that art form, I'm more aligned with the logical thinking of Mason. Yet again the setting is brought to life and is a place that I'd love to visit.

A cosy mix of mystery, romance, and family drama, and I really enjoyed the Scottish setting. Poppy was creative, determined, and trying to rebuild her life after setbacks. Her return home to Port Starr and her involvement in renovating the cottages gave the story a warm, community feel. I especially liked how her art tied into the narrative and made her journey feel personal.

The mystery of the Scarlet Highwayman added intrigue, and teaming up with Mason to uncover the truth gave the book a nice dual focus: history and present‑day secrets.
Watching Poppy team up with Mason to uncover the truth was fun, and I liked how their partnership slowly grew.

The atmosphere was lovely. The cottages, the castle looming in the distance, and the small‑town community gave the book a comforting vibe. The blend of romance and mystery worked well.

The book is centered around Poppy, a girl who has returned to her home town to save the family business, and historian Mason.

Mason approaches Poppy for assistance with his research for a TV production, as he understands Poppy holds a great interest in The Scarlet Highwayman.

Both main characters were well written and very relatable. There was definite chemistry between them but Poppy, in particular, was trying not to get caught up in this due to past hurt.

I loved the mystery in the book. It had so many twists and turns along the way that I wasn't sure how it was going to end up.

There is a great range of supporting characters adding to the story.

The book was so easy to read and the stories interwoven so well between the relaunch of the cottages, the mystery and the romance.

I look forward to reading more in the Scottish Highland series.

I’ve enjoyed every Julie Shackman book I’ve read and this is no exception.

The book follows the story of Poppy and Mason who are interested in uncovering the secrets about a local ‘legend’, the Scarlet Highwayman.

The Highlands setting was one of the major highlights of the book and uncovering the history of the legend was the next one.

I love the storytelling, dialogue and how the past and present were weaved together. The characters were spectacular and delivered.

I would have liked for the romantic connection between Poppy and Mason to be explored further as their relationship in the epilogue appears too hasty.

Nevertheless, this would make a perfect end of summer read.

This was not the other reads in this series. Poppy has returned to Scotland to help run the holiday cottages as they might lose the business if she doesn’t. When historian Mason comes along they are on the hunt to find out who was the highland highway man. I liked Poppy’s life and the way she was told in the story, I want keen on the historic part. It did bring the whole story together, but felt it was more of a historical fiction rather than a easy going romance, I didn’t dislike it though, the words did flow easily, but less of a history lesson in the next book please. 3.5 stars. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for a copy.

When Poppy's parents' summer cottages start losing money and they decide to sell, she returns home to Scotland to run them. There, she runs into Mason, an Australian historian investigating the mystery of the Scarlett Highwayman.

I enjoyed the story as well as the main characters Poppy and Mason, and I loved his sidekick Darwin. There was a mystery, romance, and some twists and turns along the way as they discover more about the Scarlett Highwayman.

I loved returning to the Highlands again for another engaging story.

Not at all what I expected but a very interesting read.

Filled with history and art you’ll keep turning pages into the wee hours.

Poppy is an artist who has come home to Scotland to make her parents cottage rental business work so they don’t have to sell while Mason is a historian from Australia who has come to try and uncover the identity of a local villain.
The two realise they can use their skills to help each other. Often both characters are moody and need to get over themselves.

Surprising but full of mystery and romance.

Poppy returns to the Scottish Highlands for a holiday but soon finds her life plan has changed. Mason is an Australian historian researching something close to Poppy's heart. Neither is looking for a relationship, but attraction and proximity soon have them wondering why not? With its connections to the past and present-day drama, this is an interesting story with a gentle, conflicted romance and an emotional, soul-searching journey for Poppy. I like the characters, the romance and the storytelling.

The Secret Castle in the Highlands took me on a feel-good mystery with a cute romance mixed in, which is exactly what I was looking for when I decided to give this one a go. This is my first read by Julie Shackman, and it won't be my last!

I really liked the mystery aspect of this story. The buried secrets and the discovery of just what was going on kept me hooked from the start.

The characters were very well-written. I especially loved Poppy. Her energy gave me energy!

Overall, this was a really great read. Don't miss this one!

Whilst I have really enjoyed some of the other books in this series, I did not enjoy this one. I kept telling myself that it would improve but sadly it didn’t. It is an easy read but one that I just found a bit dull. I didn’t really connect to the characters and found myself not really caring about the outcome. This book will really suit some people, but I found myself wishing I was reading something better.

Shackman's Scottish Escapes are always a joy to read. I am yet to read them all, but the ones I have I've enjoyed, and they are brilliant escapisms.

The Secret Castle was a slow burning romance cloaked in the mystery of the Scarlet Highwayman.

Scenes were set with the splendor of the Scottish Highlands as a backdrop, and the welcoming warmth of the Port Starr community.

And a cast of charming characters completed the story perfectly.

The Secret Castle in the Highlands is a brilliant mix of mystery with romance. We’ve a mystery from the 1780’s rippling through the lives of our current characters and it was fascinating seeing how the fate of characters from so long ago had such an effect on Poppy and Mason.
Poppy’s decision to revitalise the holiday cottages on her parents’ behalf was a brave one and I loved the sound of these places with the added bonus of Poppy and Kate’s creative skills. The detective work of both Poppy and Mason was great to watch and the chemistry between them was fun to see.
