I love Rachel Grants books they never disappoint. They are always thoroughly enjoyable and I always learn very interesting things. This book touches on a few,different areas. We have real Archaeology against Pseudo Archaeology and the podcast by Gerald Campbell of disinformation. His podcast has become so popular that its becoming a very big problem. Especially for archaeologists who are actually getting attacked by a group of people called The Truthers. They are attacking archaeologists because they believe Gerald Campbell and all the disinformation he's putting out. He is spouting rhetoric that they are lying about the history of all archeology.
Anastasia or Staci Allen is an intelligent, sassy and gorgeous archaeologist. If you have read the series she is with the Friday Morning Valykyries or FMV they work to stop the looting and sale of artifacts. She was one of them that was attacked by the Truthers. I enjoyed her character very much. Rachel Grant portrayed her as a woman who was a knockout but she has just as much intelligence with a few insecurities which made her very real to me! She was hired by Gerald Campbell as lead investigator for his expedition. He thinks it will legitimize his skewed results.
Jake Burns the red hot navy seal is very sweet and he meets Staci at the big dinner she must attend to get the job. She immediately is drawn to him but he's at the dinner so that means he believes in all the rhetoric Campbell is spreading. She considers him a disciple of the devil. He definitely gets shot down! Then the next day she sees him again at a party for the team of Seals who were in town for a bachelor and bachelorette party for two team members and their fiancees. This time the pull between them is so strong that she doesn't resist. Afterwards she runs she cannot understand why she's still attracted to him knowing his beliefs! Jake turns out to be more than just a hot Navy Seal, you get to see the relationship between him and his brother and she shows us his emotions and his vulnerability. I think these two are among my favorite characters. The romance between Staci and Jake is very spicy and sweet but you can feel the emotion underneath. As usual Rachel Grant goes into great detail with her characters, the setting and archaeology. I have learned a great deal reading this whole series plus it was thoroughly enjoyable. I also enjoyed the way she incorporates her earlier characters in her most recent books. I must give this book 5 stars!! I want thank Rachel Grant for this early copy of False Flag. The opinions and reviews are all my own.

I really enjoyed this latest instalment of the Evidence Under Fire series. We met Staci briefly in Kira's book, but she was little more than a plot device at that point, and Staci's insecurities when it comes to how Kira and Vicky regard her as a friend, and also how Freya and Brie see her as an operator, reflect that. But Ms Grant writes the kind of world I wish I lived in, so Staci's fears are unfounded, and all of the women whose regard she wants see her the way she longs for them to: as smart, competent and capable - all of which she absolutely is.
Meanwhile, I can't remember if we've met Jake before or not. I have to confess that a lot of the MMCs in military/ex-military/private security romantic suspense stories tend to blur for me. I'm more than happy to hang out with them for the duration of a novel, but beyond their names, who they end up paired with at the end of the book, and race/ethnicity/culture if it's mentioned, I often find it hard to differentiate the guys from each other. That's probably a me thing though.
And when it comes to the actual story, there's a lot going on. Ms Grant has never shied away from politics in her books (something I love about her writing), so we have a very topical plot featuring a disinformation-peddling podcaster sowing dissension and division for views, a Nazi-identifying tech billionaire attempting to manipulate politicians at the highest level of government, and of course the banality of everyday sexism. While the disinformation relates to archaeology - and pseudoarchaeology - it could just as easy be health or nutrition in today's headlines. But of course it is archaeology - because, as the Orwell quote that appears more than once in the book states, "Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past."
So we have Staci - an archaeologist and hopeful Friday Morning Valkyrie - going undercover as a way to fight the pseudoarchaeology disinformation, and Jake - a seal who's been drawn into the the disinformation peddling world by his brother. And we have a bunch of appearances from, or references to, characters in both the Evidence and the Tinderbox series, which always makes me happy. In particular, I now find myself wanting to go back and read Freya's, Brie's and Morgan's stories - the books that started me out in Ms Grant's writing.
All of which means that False Flag was a wild ride, and one I enjoyed immensely ( even with what felt like a couple of questionable choices on Staci's part). And now I'm looking forward to Book 5 in the series - whenever it makes its appearance :-)

Deep in enemy territory
Whew. This story grabbed me by throat from the very first word and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. It has so many twists and turns it was unputdownable. With the perfect balance of history, culture, current events, and archeology, all woven together with suspense, danger, secrets, humor, love, and spice, I was equally desperate to read it all at once but also to make it last. I am always a fan of uber protective capable men being paired with smart brave capable women who need loving more than they need rescuing. This story does that beautifully. Staci is working on her PhD in archeology and her thesis topic is disinformation, violence, and pseudoarcheology. Her plan is to sign up as an archeologist on a Pacific Northwest expedition to debunk the dangerous podcaster Campbell. Campbell espouses the theory that historians and archeologists are hiding the truth of a genocide perpetrated thousands of years ago against a civilization that was present before the indigenous tribes. Jake is a Navy SEAL who is estranged from his older brother and in hopes to reconnect, he joins him at a fundraiser for the Lost Civilizations podcast run by Campbell. Jake meets Staci at the fundraiser but she is uninterested because of his presence there. They meet a second time at a social event with FMV right before the expedition is to start and the chemistry between them is undeniable. But Staci is sure she cannot trust Jake as he’s a believer of Campbell’s propaganda. Once she’s on an isolated island for the expedition with no access to the outside world surrounded by potential enemies she’s on her own. Now she just has to do what she came to do and hope she’s not destroyed in the process. I loved how the tension and suspense continued to slowly crank up as the story progressed. That’s the best part of romantic suspense for me, when the story demand low key yelling at the characters to be careful because something bad is going to happen. The book has a little bit of everything including sweet moments, strong friendships, spice, real life issues, imperfect characters, dangerous moments, mystery, uber protective men, secrets, plot twists, painful pasts, and evil actors. I love this series.

I received False Flag as an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and truly, Rachel Grant never disappoints. Every time I read one of her books, I’m not just entertained — I walk away having learned something. This one dives deep into pseudoarchaeology and the frightening power of deliberate disinformation. It’s wild (and terrifying) how a few clicks, a sketchy website, and a celebrity endorsement can turn misinformation into “truth” that spreads like wildfire.
Anastasia is such a breath of fresh air. She’s a woman with big boobs and an even bigger brain, and Rachel Grant never turns her into a stereotype. Instead, she gives us a heroine who knows her strengths, owns them, and uses her intelligence to think strategically and get results. It’s so satisfying to see a female lead written with that kind of respect and complexity. A reminder that women can be brilliant, capable, and unapologetically themselves all at once.
And then there’s Jake. On the surface, he’s the confident, tough-as-nails SEAL team member you expect — but Rachel Grant lets us see so much more. As the story unfolds, his emotions, vulnerabilities, and honest reactions come through, making him feel real rather than just another action hero.
If I’m being completely honest, the ending didn’t feel fully tied up for me. Not every character’s outcome is revealed, and I was left wanting just a bit more closure. It doesn’t ruin the story, but it did leave me wishing for a few extra pages.

Staci Allen is smart with a side of sassy that I got a kick out of! She has a lot of bottled up insecurities and I think that helped portray her character more evenly. She doesn’t hesitate to stick her neck out, even knowing the danger she’s placed herself in. Gracious knows, she definitely puts herself in boiling water with the Valkyrie’s latest case!
Jake Burns is just super sweet. Yes, he’s a tough SEAL, but he reminded me of the cinnamon roll hero. Staci gets the focus and he’s her physical and emotional support backup. The thread about reconnecting with his sibling sort of explained why he was invested in the outcome of the situation Staci was involved in. And while he was not planning to meet the woman of his dreams, he’s 100% down to help Staci do what needs to be done to bring down the bad guy.
As usual, Rachel does a great job on detail. False Flag has a lot happening! You’ve got the politics, the First Nation and colonialism issues rearing up, and the worst?! The ogliarch to top the worst of the worst with his extremely skewered, white supremacist beliefs that he is trying to forcefully say is the correct history of the land. Definitely reminiscent of WW II era beliefs. The blossoming romance between Jake and Staci is spicy and sweet, with a growing emotional undertone I really enjoyed. I also have to mention the cameos of previous characters! Some of my favorites got page time and I was a very happy reader to see them network across the various groups!

Gerald Campbell, a podcaster, has a cult following that believes his claim that archeologists have hidden the truth about human history to protect their Indigenous agenda.
Archeologist PhD candidate, Staci Allen, is invited to add legitimacy to his expedition and his theory. Staci meets the necessary Secretary of Interior Professional Standards qualifications which allows Campbell to apply for National Science Foundation grant. Aware of Staci’s reputation and stance, Campbell believes her findings will add credibility to his beliefs.
An agreement is reached that Staci will be able to interview with local oral history experts, validate all of the expedition research findings and will be allowed to publish the information.
The team is secured on Letora Island owned by tech millionaire Casper Oliver which is located in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. Staci learns that the internet is controlled and she is blocked from researching previous local historical and scientific studies. She is restricted to on-line pseudo-archeology sties. The only difficult issue with this book is that I had pages of notes to keep track of all the characters and the extremely involved plot.

I really enjoy Rachel Grant's books so it's a little disappointing when one doesn't quite work for me.
I did actually like the premise of this book, but it's the execution that fell flat. It's also very clear how much research was put into the book. My major issue though was that the political side of the story takes up so much space that it leaves little room for romance. And speaking of the romance, I didn't feel enough tension between Jake and Staci. Things usually move pretty fast in romantic suspense but I wanted more of a buildup before they actually got together. I felt like their relationship moved forward too fast before I was emotionally invested enough in it.
I didn't dislike the book but I just never became fully invested in either the romance or the larger pseudoarchaeology plot, which made it a struggle to get through.
Still as a long time fan of this author's work, it's always lovely to revisit old characters from the Evidence series.

This is a very interesting book with many facts, but also suspense and mystery. Staci Allen was working on her Ph.D in anthropology. I was amazed at how many people think anthropologists have hidden truths about our past. Gerard Campbell was one of the biggest podcasters that spread false information. He was very good at urging his followers to commit crimes against the anthropologists subtly. Gerard had a very rich backer who owned an island by Victoria Canada who was helping him fund his lies. I was glad Staci had a reputable group of people who were helping to get to the truth especially after signing on to Gerard’s group to show anthropologists had been lying. But she was supposedly hired to show his information they would dig up was true. I was so glad she had met Jake Burns, a Seal, at one of her backers parties. She had thought he was one of the followers of Gerard, but finally found out he was on her side. Jake’s brother was one of Gerard’s followers and Jake wanted him to open his eyes to the lies Gerard was spreading. Luckily through Jake’s Seal team he was sent to be undercover to find information. There Jake and Stacie worked together. The two were put through so much on the island where they went through so many trials and tribulations. This book was exciting and suspenseful at times. I loved the book and strongly encourage you to read it.

This was an excellent and intelligent thriller. Both of the main characters- Jake and Staci- were extremely likeable and funny, much more than some of her recent love interests in other books. The romance was interesting, quirky, sexy and believable amidst a backdrop of some brutal events. The main topic of how disinformation is channelled through social media platforms is very relevant to problems happening in the world today. I learned a lot about how these awful people disseminate their views to the public -with billionaire funding-and how we now end up with false flag narratives about horrific real life events such as school shootings or assassination attempts to their gullible audiences (though these are not the specific focus of this novel). I have not heard much about pseudo-archeology before and was shocked by some of their bizarre fantasy ideas, concepts that I thought only a child would believe. This is the most political of Grant’s novels so far and though I had no problems with the liberal views presented I imagine some readers might not be as happy. It was full of shocks and twists in the narrative with some convincing villains and I look forward to the story of the next couple highlighted towards the end.

Once again I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Rachel Grant’s latest book, False Flag, and as with all the books in this series, Ms. Grant had me on the edge of my seat throughout. The excitement is non-stop with each page turned and the compelling characters had me needing to see what would happen next. I don’t usually have favorite scenes in books as I enjoy how every thing fits to move a plot forward, but I absolutely loved the intellectual “take-down” scene. (Trust me, you’ll know it when you read it and you will be cheering our protagonist just as hard as I was!)
I have to confess that it had been awhile since I visited in this world and I loved seeing all the characters from Grant’s other books come together, but I knew I wasn’t recalling all the relationships and interactions from the prior books in both of the Evidence series, so I went looking for a quick way to catch up on them and found a Chirp sale on audio books that made it easy to refresh my memory before delving too deeply into False Flag. Don’t get me wrong, False Flag is a compelling read in its own, but it was nice to be able to put all the background in place again.
No doubt fans of suspense will enjoy this offering from Grant, with or without the context.

This is a wonderful read, but it is not the kind of book that you should read when you are very tired and just want to read a chapter or two to help you fall asleep. It's worth paying full attention cause otherwise you might miss details that are really important, not only for this story but in real life.
Other than Ms. Grant I have no background in archeology, though I've always found the subject interesting, and I don't live in the US. Anastacia/Staci Allen is an archaeologist who is trying to stop a podcaster from spreading misinformation about archaeology. She agrees to be work for the podcaster, Gerard, and it will help her finish her dissertation. Jacob Burns is a Navy SEAL and attends the same fancy dinner as Staci. Jake and Staci have a one night stand at a mutual friend’s wedding. She leaves the next morning for her new job. Staci believes Jake is one of the Truthers that believes everything that Gerard airs. But he really isn’t, he’s just trying to reconnect with his brother. She’s stuck on an island with a hostile team that follows the podcaster. Jake shows up and Staci is trying to get over him but now they are both stranded on the island and trying to disprove Gerard. But it becomes dangerous and they might not make it off the island.

This is a story that will stay with you for a long time as well as have you questioning what is real and what is false. It is intense and a book to be read when you have time to devote to it in order to do it justice. Staci is working on her PhD and agrees to go undercover for the Friday Morning Valkyries to expose a podcaster and his pseudoarcheology. Stacie uses her assets at times so that people underestimate her as a way to gain information. She often used that information against them. She meets Jake while she is undercover and thinks he is a fan of the podcaster, Gerald. She does not have a high opinion of him despite being attracted to him. His brother Lloyd is part of the group on the island and who Staci works with. Eventually, Jake goes undercover for the Navy and gives Staci some backup. Trusting anyone is dangerous as it seems like everyone has something they are hiding and there is more going on than anyone realizes. It is intense and complicated. The author adds references at the end to explain how this is something that is not that far fetched. That is the scariest part of the book.

I'm a fan of Ms. Grant and this series and was definitely looking forward to reading this book! I did, however, find that I was putting this book down a lot. The story is excellent and well written (of course!), but the story itself is far to similar to current events, which I find disturbing. Dealing with disinformation of history and scientific method and the threats and harassment that goes along with that, is important to cover and call out, which Ms. Grant did very well. I found this story did a lot of name dropping from other books and series, which was distracting for me; I was trying to remember what stories went with what characters. I didn't find the relationship between Staci and Jake really believable, but the secondary story of Teague and Vicki was set-up nicely for their book. Overall, I did enjoy the book and was very happy to be given the opportunity to read it early!

Wow!!! This book is fantastic! I was hooked from the very first page. The subject is fascinating and I feel like I learned about a subject that I should have already known about. The whole concept of pseudoarchaeology disturbing (and true), but made for an interesting premise for the novel. The afterward was interesting and contains many references that I'll use to learn more about the subject.
I was immediately drawn into the story and found myself flipping pages just as quickly as possible to see what happened next. The characters felt real as they came to life on the page. I felt invested in their story and wanted them to get their HEA ending.

The Evidence Under Fire books really make me proud to be a woman. Staci is on her way to joining an elite group of women who take unimaginable risks to protect art, history, and culture. The Friday Morning Valkyries are all smart brave women. Most of them have had their own story play out in another of Ms. Grant’s tantalizing books. I always learn something about archaeology or history or both. And then there is Jake Burns, navy seal and a fan of the enemy? I love how Staci puts Jake in his place at their first meeting. And though Staci tries to dislike and ignore Jake in her heart of hearts she wants him. Can she beat overwhelming odds and prove the podcaster a fraud? Can she survive the expedition with her life? Can she trust Jake? This tale kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the pages as fast as I could. Don’t miss this suspense thriller.

I admire and really enjoy this authors books. You never know what unique aspect of archeology and exploration you’ll encounter within her books. But you always know that the characters she brings us will engage us and keep us hooked throughout the whole story. She brings the books alive and I find I’m so invested I don’t realise just how long I’ve been reading. That said it’s not just her heroines that she seems to nail but the MMC’s are all different. Jake is no exception. I found myself half in love with him and I loved their dynamic. The emotional connection was compelling and I loved watching them evolve and grow together without getting lost in each other. Staci was bold and I loved the way she does what she does and the confidence she has. Once again Ms Grant delivers another great book that kept me hooked all the way through. Now I can’t wait for the next book now.

Rachel Grant’s books are full of intense situations that leave me so sucked in it’s hard to put them down. She writes in a way that doesn’t insult your intelligence when discussing the military or archaeological context while also making sure everything is understandable.
Jake and Staci meeting again and again show what a connection they have. Even while thinking he’s the enemy she doesn’t trust it completely. They have such great chemistry and seeing Jake especially fall in love is beautiful.
Aside from being a love story, the political and cultural messages in this book stress the real life implications of pseudoarchaeology and the harm it causes. In the author’s note at the end Rachel does an excellent job of emphasizing the points made throughout the story as well as giving sources for more research.

I really enjoyed False Flag by Rachel Grant. The book maintained a tense atmosphere throughout, which kept me engaged and wanting to see what would happen next. I also thought the story was very well researched, and I especially appreciated the author’s note at the end. Rachel Grant explained her personal connection to the subject matter and gave some insight into why and how she conducted her research, which added an interesting and meaningful perspective to the book.

False Flag is the 4th book in the Evidence Under Fire series. It can easily be read as a standalone, even though we get to reconnect with - or get introduced to - all the characters from the previous books. In times of rogue AI, alternative facts and an increasing pressure on journalists as well as scientists, Staci and Jake's story cannot be classified as an easy read - it's way too realistic and therefore scary for that. Instead, it's a gripping romantic suspense novel with a great cast of characters, non-stop action, steamy sexy times and a hard-earned, well-deserved HEA. Once started, I couldn't put in down! I was fortunate to have received an early copy and am leaving this review voluntarily and honestly. Can't wait to find out what's in store for the teams next!

Ms Grant creates yet again another tense, gripping story, with appealing characters, and a fast moving plot, all that draws the reader along for the entire rocky ride. Gripping, edge-of-your-seat suspense and action, and believable characters, are all tossed together to bring this story to life. The book is incredibly well written, fits perfectly in the series, kept me involved. Ms Grant shares her knowledge, expertise and talent in archaeology and with her writing talent, is able to clearly define that world for the novices reading the book to understand. Wow, this book takes you to the edge of a cliff and doesn't let you jump. I loved the setting in the Northwest US and BC, Canada. A very entertaining book, and I absolutely loved, loved the paintball game at the very beginning of the book. Classic! Disinformation is real, even in today's world, and what it takes to stand up to someone with all the power, truly amazing and brave. Loads of previous characters in this chapter of this series, and it's always nice to see those characters after you meet them in earlier chapters. It was a who done it read with all kinds of possibilities for the reader to try and figure out who is complicit. "Foundational" and definitely "ever ready".

This book was a crazy ride of suspense, danger, action, and drama from beginning to end. It was a good addition to the series but it felt more politics heavy than a true romantic suspense. Jake and Staci had a good connection and the feeling and steam were there; it all just felt a little rushed and muted by the political aspects. That aside, it did not deter my overall enjoyment of the book. It has you thinking and keeps you guessing until the end. Looking forward to what comes next.

False Flag throws you into the world of pseudoarchaeology & archaeology. It was a lot to absorb, & I found myself getting lost in the political & informative side of the book.
The MMCs of the book, Jack & Staci, on the other hand, brought a few laughs, raised eyebrows & an emotional twist. Their attraction & flirting were a bit of a whiplash, but when it got real, it got deep, quick.
Their goals were a meshed mess of personal & righteous need. I kinda knew who the bad guys were & was expecting more action. Staci definitely got a workout at the end when she saved herself.

Their goals were a meshed mess of personal & righteous need. I kinda knew who the bad guys were & was expecting more action. Staci definitely got a workout at the end when she saved herself.
