Christmas Falls #2

Finché neve non ci separi

Rate this book

succedendo tra me e Arlo?

Another cute hallmarky sweet Christmas story

When I read books Im usually just all about the vibes. If it has good romantic sweet vibes, I am willing to overlook a lot. I can overlook spelling errors and minor plot holes and let a lot go to just go with the good vibes of this story. And this story did have that, I liked Arlo & Emerson & how they met, like in the first book I absolutely love the town of Christmas Falls & this one took place in a b&b and was about a b&b owner which I really loved to read about. Just going by the story itself and all the sweet fluff I would probably give this a 4 star rating

but even while I'm able to overlook a lot - this book had a couple things I just couldn't overlook that brought it down to a 3

At one point, it changes from first person POV to third POV just for one sentence out of no where. We are in Arlo's POV and after he asks something it is finished with -Arlo asked- so I'm thinking why does it say Arlo asked and not I asked, did it change back to Emerson's POV and I didnt notice, so now I'm flipping back and rereading and turns out it did not change POVS, the author just forgot it was a first person POV book for a second there. If I'm flipping back pages and having to reread, then its just too much for me to overlook.

Another thing is, on page 71 Arlo was 35 and then on page 125 he was 38. Poor guy aged three years in the span of 2 days and 50 pages. Again, I'm flipping back and rereading and again its just too much to overlook.

Shame this wasnt edited better because like I said the story itself was very sweet and enjoyable.

This is a super low angst read, so low angst it's almost a snooze fest. The MCs are very one dimensional, boring, white bread, you name it.

One weird thing about this books is that it's billed as an age gap story, and in the beginning we get introduced to the younger of the men, Emerson, a popular "cozy mystery" writer who has written twenty-six books. Emerson is the sad sack who never stays with anyone long enough to determine if they're relationship-worthy.

The other main characters is Arlo, the B&B owner introduced in the first book in this series. He's described as being older, and in fact he's even called "middle-aged". Having come back to the town of Christmas Falls to take over the B&B after his grandmother died, he thinks he'll never find the right man to build a life with in this small town, especially because he'd been so unsuccessful in the huge metropolis of Cincinnati.

I won't spoil how they meet, but we end up with a close-proximity trope in addition to the age gap trope, but it's all kind of *yawn* to be perfectly honest.

And that age gap? Well, in one chapter, "middle-aged" Arlo says, "You would think at some point in my thirty-five years, I would have learned better, but apparently not. Wait, what? This "middle-aged" guy, who is made out to be soooo old in the first part of the book, is only 35??? Well, no, actually, he's "'Thirty-eight," [he] grumbled, correcting [Emerson]. "I'm thirty-eight years old.'" So, apparently over the course of a couple of days, Arlo aged from thirty-five to thirty-eight. If so, no way in hell I'm going to Christmas Falls, holiday magic or no holiday magic.

And it turns out that Emerson, author of twenty-six books, is only twenty-six himself! Wow, what a prolific author! I wonder how many books he's churning out in a year? Three? Four? Four-point-five? Amazing!!

I guess twelve years is a decent enough age gap but the author makes it out to be much larger when Arlo and Emerson meet, and portrays both MCs as being a lot older than the ages she eventually settles upon.

Anyway, inconsistencies and ridiculousness aside, this wasn't all that great. It's not a hard book to read, but I was on auto-pilot most of the time. The sex scenes were also snoozers, lacking any real heat. The dialog is also very clunky, and there's not much differentiation between any of the characters to give them an individual voice.

I hope the rest of this series isn't as bad as the first two books, but it's not looking promising.

I don't think this author is for me unfortunately.

I didn't like the writing style, the plot or the characters. There were also so many spelling errors it got distracting. So much of the content was also just repeated in a slightly different way that never expanded on the initial instance, just rearranged the words so you're not actually finding out anything new.

Also I am not a fan of the 'big romantic gesture' plot device, it makes me cringe every time, and combined with my dislike of public proposals this book just had nothing I really liked!

Absolutely adored this book

Sometimes you just want a swoony, no nonsense romance in which two people meet, are attracted to each other, and fall in love over a period of time.

Throw in the lovely small town Christmas Falls vibe and a small age gap and you get this delightful story.

I loved the B&B setting, I loved Arlo and his kindness and care for the regulars at his cottage and I loved author Emmerson, who found himself stranded in the festive town with clothes suitable for the beach, not snow.

Great secondary characters, a catch up with some of the others who are getting their own books, and a HEA, made this a winner.

I've been a fan of Jacki James since I fell in love with Ripley in Finding Ripley. She's one of those authors whose books I know I'll enjoy, regardless of what the blurb says. When I saw she was part of this series, I was eager to jump into it.

I really liked Arlo and Emerson together, though there were a couple of things about Emerson that gave me pause. Not Emerson with Arlo, just the way he handled his decision on whether or not he was going to leave Christmas Falls and return to his old life.

There was also a thing with Arlo's age. At 32% of the book, Arlo was 35. At 59%, he was 38. No big deal, I suppose, as I know those types of mistakes are often easily overlooked in the editing process. What bugged me the most about Arlo's age is that until 35 was thrown out earlier in the book, I'd already convinced myself that Arlo was MUCH older, as in the fifties, maybe?

Even so, the epilogue more than made up for the 'will Emerson leave or not?' and the other stuff. It was very sweet.

I’m loving Christmas Falls. I’m loving the cutesy names of businesses and streets. I’m loving the people and how Christmas is basically celebrated every day of the year, though in a much smaller scale after the actual holiday has come and gone. I’m loving watching these couples come together. I'm really eager to read the rest of the books in the series.

This is a nice addition to the series by Jacki James.

This Christmas theme romance could be a Hallmark movie. It’s an easy read and angst free, in that there are questions of the two MCs being together, but with no big impediments to that happening. Writers can write anywhere and the Gingerbread House B&B was a nice story setting. There were more descriptions of the house than of the MCs. I was wondering while reading what they looked like. ‘Older’ is not an adequate description for innkeeper Arlo and I don’t remember any description of writer Emerson. During the first sex scene when Arlo says he is thirty-eight years old I was very surprised. I thought older man meant fifties. Thirty-eight is older?? There went a review star.
A nice read, but nothing special.

This is the second book in the Christmas Falls series and I've enjoyed it very much. The Christmass vibes go on in this book with new MCs that made me want to get even more into the festive mood.
Emerson is a writer of mystery books that decides at the last minute to go to the Bahamas with the woman he was dating. He gets to the airport to find she had already found a replacement when he first told her he wouldn't be going. Then he uses the ticket he's bought and flies to Christmas Falls.
Arlo is the owner of one of the B&Bs in the little town, he overhears Emerson trying to find a place to stay and he offers the only room his place has available. That's how they meet and from them on they become joined at the hip the rest of Emerson's stay.
This was such a sweet and easy to read story. Emerson was a great character, willing to enjoy his time in Christmas Falls and brought happiness to Arlo, who had spent his last years just taking care of his business. I loved how their friends pushed them towards the other, encouraging both men to try and have a relationship.
It was kind of insta-love between them, then a storm hit the town and they had to share the room causing Emerson and Arlo to take another step into sharing the bed. It was nice to see them both falling for each other, athough I would've liked more romantic scenes between them, or just more moments of them alone talking about their feelings. At times it felt like the author was just taking the reader for a tour around the town to show us all the places, shops and events going on.
This book is a low angst story full of Christmas spirit and a lovely relationship that forms between two men when they were not looking for love. They were adorable together and made a perfect couple, it was like watching a Hallmark movie with all the feels of a beautiful love story.

I liked the characters but the writing didn’t work for me, the dialogue felt stiff, too polite? and the descriptions used to explain what a character was feeling could’ve been a lot better.

I watched as he walked up to the counter where Cammy was working. He seemed…stressed in some way. I couldn’t hear what they were saying at first, but the longer they talked, the louder he got. Not in an aggressive way but in more of a panicked way.

This author didn’t do it for me but I’ll definitely be continuing this multi-author series. 😊

Please excuse my spelling and grammar mistakes, I never claimed to be good at writing reviews, they are just my stream of thoughts after reading a story. My ratings always reflect my enjoyment of the story. Just because it aligns or doesn’t align with my tastes does not mean it’ll be the same for you. Try reading it for yourself !

STRANA FAMILY BOOK BLOG

Sweet Christmas Romance.

Read this, it's guaranteed to bring some festive sparkle into your life. Filled with warmth, and lashings of romance, it has all the ingredients needed to put a smile on your face and is the perfect read in the run-up to Christmas. Emerson and Arlo are both alone, and make for a perfect match. No angst, the term 'heartwarming' is often used to describe a book, and not always with justification. The Christmas Falls Festival is truly heartwarming and melted my heart. A sweet Christmas romance.

The first 65% of this book was a solid ⭐⭐⭐. But after the dreaded "all too soon" sentence and saying shit like "ordered but a few" instead of "only ordered a few" or something more modern like that, shit went ⭐⭐ real quick.

Consigliato! Per me sono 4 stelle!

(4.5)

I am fairly new to Jacki's writing but when I saw she had a book coming out in the Christmas Falls series I knew I had to sign up to read a copy!

Emerson spends his days writing his mystery novels, and spending most of his free time with the characters that live in his head. He's lonely, and while he did have a girlfriend, he knows it's not going anywhere. On a last minute whim he decides to go to Christmas Falls, after learning his now ex girlfriend replaced him before they ever broke up. He was not prepared for the weather, or for the nice, good looking B&B owner to help him out.

Arlo runs one of the local B&B's that are in Christmas Falls, when he overheard Emerson's situation he offered one of the available rooms to the man. He didn't know that offer would bring these two men closer than they thought possible.

I LOVE Christmas romance stories, I really love them. They just make me so happy! I love love, and I also love Christmas. The scenery that's described in this book is so vivid, and very detailed. It makes me wish there Christmas Falls actually existed, I would love to visit the town if it were real.

The two main characters were fantastic, they developed a friendship that slowly developed into more. Although it took both men almost losing each other for them to realize exactly how much they mean to one another. I thought this book was written in a beautiful way, this story definitely embodies what the holiday season is about. In fact, Arlo and Emerson are very good examples of holiday goodness/kindness. They both helped people when they were in a lurch, and always tried to do what was best for the people around them. Overall a really fantastic holiday story filled with amazing characters making sweet memories.

This book gave me cavities.

The dialogue is clunky, the sugary Christmas trappings leave a chemical aftertaste, and why does this "out of shape" older man have abs? There are a number of inconsistencies, no understandable chemistry, and paper thin characters, leaving me to wonder why I even finished it.

This was my first Jacki James novel and it will probably be my last.

Okay, so since done with the Amy Aislin books, so I was kind of intrigued by the concept of this series. They are all gay romance Christmas stories that take place in the town of Christmas Falls Illinois, but they are written by different authors. Characters appear in each others books, and the locale (and all of the stores and events) are all the same.

This one, by Jacki James, was about Emerson (writer) and Arlo (B&B Proprietor).

Oh goodness. Arlo was described by Emerson as being "an older gentleman", and then Emerson says that it "took time" to make a living as an author, indicating he's been at this for awhile.

With Arlo being older, plus the way he spoke about himself, I was imagining Arlo to be in his late 40's, early 50's, maybe.

To my surprise he turns out to be 35. (Or is it 38? Both ages are given.)

Either way, as a 44-year-old this was both annoying and amusing.

Cute story though!

Thanks to Neon Rainbow ARC Review, I received an advanced reviewer copy (ARC) for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This relatively short novel is set a few weeks before the Holidays, in a place called Christmas Falls. Emerson Maxwell, a writer of cozy mystery, decides on a whim to go on vacation. Instead of the Bahamas, he flies to Christmas Falls where he becomes stranded. Luckily, he is rescued by Arlo Harper, the owner of The Gingerbread Cottage, the local B&B.

Emerson and Arlo’s relationship developed quite easily and without unnecessary drama (internal or external). It’s a really sweet Christmas story that can be read in a few hours. Since it’s part of a multi-author MM romance series, you can revisit Christmas Falls through the other books in the series.

I wanted to like this book, and I did like the characters and the low-angst storyline, but there were so many typos, it was distracting. Like teh instead of the? Really? Surely at some point the author or someone read over it and saw the little squiggly line under the misspelling? And Jolly Java was spelled Jova -- twice. It was also missing closing quotations, changed from 1st to 3rd person, and had a LOT of phrase/line repletions.

Reading romance I'm willing to suspend my disbelief and embrace some outlandish things, but I couldn't look past the "age gap" being a 26 and 38 (or 35, depending on where it was in the book!) year olds. And the 26 year old had published 26 books! (I hope he at least spell-checked them.) But to consider 38 an old man is just rude.
