He’s trapped between life and death—and she’s the only one who can guide him home.
When young nurse Jasmine walked into the hospital on a cold winter morning, she thought it would be just another routine shift. But everything changes when she’s assigned what seems like a simple case—only to discover that her newest patient, hockey star Alex Sokolov, is in a coma… and his spirit is standing right in front of her.
Thrust into a world where the veil between life and death grows thinner by the day, Jasmine must navigate the surreal connection forming between them. As she struggles to help Alex return to his body—and the life he’s desperate to reclaim—she also begins to question the boundaries of fate, faith, and what it truly means to be alive.
Torn between reason and something far greater, Jasmine must confront not only her fears of the paranormal—but the undeniable pull of a love that defies logic.
J. E. Romm's Flat Line is an absolutely mesmerizing and profoundly moving novel that I devoured in a single sitting. From the moment I was introduced to Nurse Jasmine's seemingly ordinary winter shift, my breath was utterly stolen away. The premise alone – a young nurse tasked with caring for a hockey star in a coma, only to find his spirit standing before her – is a stroke of genius, and Romm executes it with such skill and grace that it feels not just plausible, but deeply resonant.
What truly sets Flat Line apart is the exquisite rendering of the connection between Jasmine and Alex. Romm masterfully weaves a narrative where the veil between life and death isn't just thin, it's a swirling, tangible entity that Jasmine must navigate. The surreal nature of Alex's spectral presence is handled with remarkable sensitivity. It's not a cheap gimmick; it's the heart of the story, the source of both conflict and an improbable, yet utterly captivating, romance.
Jasmine's journey is a compelling one. She's a relatable protagonist, initially grounded in logic and the scientific realities of her profession. Watching her grapple with the impossible, with the undeniable evidence of something far beyond her understanding, is a testament to Romm's deep insight into human nature. Her internal struggle between reason and the undeniable pull she feels towards Alex is palpable, and her evolving faith in the extraordinary is truly inspiring.
And then there’s Alex. Even in his comatose state, his spirit is vibrant, desperate, and achingly real. The growing bond between him and Jasmine is the undeniable engine of this novel. Their interactions, though otherworldly, are filled with genuine emotion, vulnerability, and a blossoming affection that defies all conventional boundaries. The "undeniable pull of a love that defies logic" is not an understatement; it's a beautifully crafted, deeply felt reality within the pages of this book.
J. E. Romm's prose is simply stunning. It’s lyrical, evocative, and capable of painting vivid pictures of both the stark hospital environment and the ethereal realm Alex inhabits. The pacing is impeccable, keeping you on the edge of your seat as Jasmine battles not only to help Alex return home, but also to understand her own place in this increasingly strange and wondrous reality. The themes of fate, faith, and the very definition of being alive are explored with a thoughtful and profound touch, leaving you with much to ponder long after you've turned the final page.
Flat Line is more than just a supernatural romance; it's a story that will touch your soul. It’s a reminder that life, in all its forms, is precious, and that love can indeed transcend the most insurmountable of obstacles. Prepare to be captivated, to be moved, and to fall head over heels for this truly unforgettable novel. A resounding 5 stars absolutely brilliant!
ARC review of Flat Line Release date: 03 October 2025
3/5 ⭐️ 0.5🌶️
This book had a unique concept and the storyline had good potential. However, it felt choppy at some places. There were a couple of filler-chapters and I’d skimmed through those. Towards the end I thought it was a little rush but still glad for the HEA. The characters were likeable and their relationship did progress fast but it didn’t feel forced. The writing was also easy to get into which is always a bonus!
Overall, enjoyable and a unique short read.
Thank you to the author, J.E Romm, for gifting me this eARC. All opinions in this review are my own.
I found this novel truly captivating, and I believe JERomm did an excellent job of hooking readers right from the start. Her descriptive writing is impressive—the way she brings actions to life and sets the scene is remarkable. The characters feel incredibly real, their inner conflicts and the compelling plot pulling me deeper into the story. She makes the characters’ journey even more intriguing and allows us to experience their emotions right alongside them. I highly recommend it to all paranormal romance readers out there.
Okay do you know those TV shows that are with your profession? You get the ick because it’s not correct. But still you are invested in the story in the drama? That was me with this book. I am a nurse and well let me say the medical things were not all very correct. But still I had an amazing time, I was invested in their story. It’s perfect for this time of year and a little haunted feeling. The paranormal aspects were amazingly done. I was rooting for them through out the whole book.
I’m newer to this author, saw this story and had to try it. I found it to be a truly entertaining tale; both heartwarming and thrilling. Blend that along with characters to really pull for and you have a wonderful and enjoyable read. Its intriguing storyline makes Flat Line a book that is easy to recommend. I definitely look forward to more from the author, as I am now a big fan of her writing.
WOW!!! This story was so interesting & so different from anything I’ve read before. I was hooked from page one.
🔮Jasmin our FMC is a nurse at the hospital. She’s very hard working & strong headed. She finds herself talking and befriending the spirit of a hockey player who’s been in a coma. While monitoring her patient she try’s to help him with waking up. Instead she falls for him & finds herself doing just about whatever it takes to bring him back.
🔮Alex is such a golden retriever. I thought he was super sweet, funny and all around such a great character. He allowed her to be herself & let her know how it feels to be seen. The ironic part to that is she’s the only once who can see him.
🔮The story is filled with emotion, love, connection, and healing. They face a lot together in such a short period of time & I thought the author did a great job of that. Their romance was so beautiful & raw, and then you made me cry for a min until we were back to the good stuff.
🔮All in all I thought the plot was super different and really interesting. Their chemistry & banter was so fun to read, you really felt their connection. I loved them so much and wanted so much more of them.
🔮Thank you for the early copy. I can’t wait to read more of your work.

This author ate and left no crumbs in her debut paranormal romance novel. I LOVED IT. I read it in like 3 hours and I could not get enough!!
It’s the perfect little forced proximity ghost human romance ever!
The fmc is a strong character with a kind heart and a passion to help others but has run herself ragged thru constant back to back shifts as a nurse. One morning shes placed on watch duty over a the mmc, a hot famous hockey player who has been in a coma for 2 months.
Will he survive or will she forever love his ghost?? Find out as soon as this book drops 10/3. I promise you won’t regret it!!
This one sucked me in from the first page! With Jasmine being a nurse, and how she tasked with taking care of a “Top Patient” a Hockey player that has been in a coma for months, when Jasmine being assigned as his care taker.
When surprise, the hockey player may be in a coma, but his sprit is lingering and she is the only one that can see him.
As they “spend time” together and get to know each other they form a bond that seems as tho these two were meant to meet each other!

If you’re looking for a book with a close proximity relationship that is a nurse/patient who are soulmates in which the FMC is selfless and the MMC is helpless than Flatline is for you! This is my first time reading author JE Romm and I was not disappointed! Flatline is a paranormal romance in which Jasmine (FMC) is a nurse who is taking care of a famous hockey player Alex. Alex is in a coma from a hockey injury but for some reason Jasmine can see and interact with him. If looking for a light read that pulls on your heart strings then read Flatline!
I still can’t believe that this is J’s first book. I devoured this book, this story will captivate you from start to finish.
Alex and Jasmine will steal your heart. This book is so much more than a paranormal romance. It has depth and life lessons, and it blew my mind.
Their story is not easy, filled with ups and downs, and they made me feel all the emotions. The characters are so relatable.
The plot, the characters, the mystery, and everything else are just amazing. You need to add this book to your TBR, it’s amazing! I can’t wait for the next book from this author.
Thank you author J.E. Romm for the gifted e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Jasmine and Sasha were a quick and strong force to steal your hearts, though under 200 pages and a short novella this story contained a depth of personality, plot and understanding for our characters. With the pain of death, love and heartbreak it was wonderful watching our MCs flow around each other in this very well written work!
Loved this book. I was lucky to get to beta read Flat Line and I enjoyed it so much that I read it in a single day. It was my first hockey romance (paranormal) read. The tension between Jasmine and Alex. The pure instinct for a nurse to save and hep her patient. Flatline is a quick read, which makes a great pallette cleanser. The protectiveness of Jasmine’s family - I FELT THAT in my soul. Definitely give this a read!
i am SCREAMING! CRYING! IN LOVE! this was just such an impactful story that fits in just a few amount of pages 🥹
i just really loved the touch of culture being incorporated with the story and weaved so seamlessly in the scenes between Alex and Jasmine in the hospital.
i literally have nothing else to say but that you MUST read this beautiful book!!! it's absolutely such a good read, especially if you just have a short downtime to relax and read. Flat Line is an amazing read for just that!
Flat Line is definitely a story line I have not yet encountered. nurse meets man who is essentially living outside of his body and has no idea how to get back. the two characters captured my attention and I definitely found their relationship sweet. was it a little like insta love? yes but for a short story, it definitely worked. very easy read and I definitely recommend, especially to those who are just picking up reading and need to ease themselves into books.
I'm a sucker for a paranormal romance and this one definitely checked the boxes. I loved the concept and I loved the delivery. The dynamic between the MCs felt so deep. I don't want to say too much because I feel like also going into this blind would also be an amazing experience. Definitely top 5 paranormal love stories and I would highly recommended.
Flat Line feels like being wrapped in a warm hug on a cold day. J.E. Romm manages to take something mystical—a love story that straddles life and death—and ground it so beautifully in the everyday. There’s this gentle rhythm to the writing that makes the supernatural elements feel both believable and tender.
At under 200 pages, this paranormal romance had me all up in my feels. I enjoyed the writing. The ending had me on the edge of my seat wondering what direction the author was going to finish it.
This was a delightful read to break up the heaviness of long novels I had been reading.
Alex is a detached spirit, caught between life and death. Jasmine is a nurse in the realm of the living. Love this book so much! Love the characters, the storyline! Had me hooked from the start!
This book is soo good!! Alex and Jasmine are great characters and their dynamic is amazing! The journey they went through together was so fun and emotional. That twist really threw me for a loop and I was itching to know how things were gana work out. I cant wait to see what's next! 🥰
I absolutely loved the concept of this book, a very original story that was unlike anything else I’ve read. I was deeply emotionally invested AND giggling and kicking my feet.
This is J.E.'s debut book, and she knocked it out of the park! I felt a range of emotions while reading this story. Both Alex and Jasmine had depth to their characters, and I could feel what they were feeling.
I loved how Jasmine began to become more understanding of her family history when she came face-to-face with Alex and his spirit. She truly wanted to help him and showed how deep her empathy goes for people. Alex was such a cutie pie that I wanted to squeeze him! He went through so much trauma within a small amount of time.
Not only did we see a relationship blossom between Alex and Jasmine, but we also saw Jasmine connect with her family, mostly her mother, on a whole new level. That may have been my favorite part because it was so real and raw between them.
I'm so excited to see what else J.E. will bring to the table, cause I know I will love it.
This was a super quick, uncomplicated in-between read.
Enjoyed the coma/ghost romance and I am always curious how and IF things transition to normal. There was just enough worry to keep me turning the pages!
