Julie Caplin is addicted to travel and good food. She’s on a constant hunt for the perfect gin and is obsessively picky about glasses, tonic and garnishes. Between regular gin tastings, she’s been writing her debut novel which is set in just one of the many cities she’s explored over the years.

Formerly a PR director, for many years she swanned around Europe taking top food and drink writers on press trips (junkets) sampling the gastronomic delights of various cities in Italy, France, Belgium, Spain, Copenhagen and Switzerland. It was a tough job but someone had to do it. These trips have provided the inspiration and settings for the trilogy, The Little Cafe in Copenhagen, The Little Brooklyn Bakery and the The Little Paris Patisserie.

Genauso gemütlich wie der erste Band der Country Escapes Reihe, wobei ich Ella für die sympathischere Protagonistin halte. Gerade am Anfang hat mich Bets genervt, weil sie gefühlt keine eigene Meinung hatte und ihr Verhalten immer von anderen Leuten in ihrem Umfeld abhängig gemacht hat. Anstatt etwas daran zu ändern, hat sie nur ständig die Tatsache wiederholt, dass andere Menschen ihr wahres Ich nicht sehen. Geht auch schlecht, so ohne eigene Persönlichkeit. Natürlich ging daraus die Charakterentwicklung hervor, die dringend nötig war, aber am Anfang hat mich Bets in den Wahnsinn getrieben. Ansonsten war es schön, bekannte Figuren aus dem ersten Teil wiederzusehen und ich bin gespannt, um wen es sich in der Fortsetzung drehen wird.

Well, that was a struggle. After the high of "The Hotel by the Sea" I was looking forward to another great holiday escape book. The title was misleading on this book - there is no "escape" - it is all based in the country town where the characters live. And it was so sloooow. Took me days and days to read cause I just didn't want to pick it up again. The characters were wishy washy and it felt like it was going nowhere, slowly.

Really disappointing, unfortunately. I normally relish Julie's books, especially the "travel" - however this one just felt like a filler. I feel dreadful for saying so as I really do love Julie's books usually, however, this one was tough.

Bets ist eine gute Seele, immer für andere da, immer hilfsbereit. Und alle sorgen sich um sie, ist nicht nur Teil der Gemeinschaft, die Gemeinschaft in Wilsgrave fühlt sich auch für sie verantwortlich. Als Jack, ihr langjähriger Freund, sie verlässt, tun sie alles um sie von ihrem Liebeskummer abzulenken und sie wieder glücklich zu sehen. Doch Bets weiß mittlerweile gar nicht wer sie ist und was sie will und die Beschäftigungstherapie hilft ihr damit auch nicht weiter. Doch nach und nach findet sie heraus, was ihr gefällt und was sie will.

Dieser zweite Teil der Reihe um Wilsgrave dreht sich nun um Bets, die wir im ersten Band bereits kennengelernt haben. Auch ihre etwas seltsame Beziehung zu Jack war da bereits Thema. Nun hat sich Jack also getrennt und Bets weiß nicht so recht weiter. Arbeitet sie doch für Jacks Vater und wohnt in einer Scheune, die seinen Eltern gehört. Und dann kommt Jack auch noch nach Hause und es stellt sich heraus, dass es auch ihm nicht gut geht und bei ihm einiges schief gelaufen ist. So begleiten wir dann abwechselnd ihn und Bets durch die Geschichte.

Ich mochte das Buch sehr gerne, Die Atmosphäre in Wilsgrave ist einfach schön und wir begegnen Ella und Devon wieder, die im ersten Band die Hauptrolle gespielt haben. Und auch Audrey und ihre Mitstreiterinnen sind wieder mit dabei. Die Geschichte liest sich flüssig und mir hat es gefallen, dass sich Bets wirklich weiterentwickelt und zwar ganz ohne die Hilfe der Dorfbewohner. So wird sie unabhängiger und kann am Ende bewusst entscheiden, wie sie ihr Leben weiter gestalten möchte.

Ich mag diese Reihe sehr gerne und freue mich schon auf den nächsten Band, von daher von mir eine Leseempfehlung!
