To Win a Dark Heart

Falling for the Wolf: A Villainous Twist on Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella

Rate this book
A woman who betrayed her family

A rogue hiding a hairy secret

And a blackmail arrangement with unexpected consequences

After her stepsister marries the crown prince, Tasia is shipped out of the country to live with relatives she’s never heard of before. Blamed and scorned for her role in that debacle, Tasia struggles to make a new life for herself amongst a community that doesn’t care for outsiders. But even that is less nerve wracking than her weekly trips through the woods to deliver a basket of “goodies” to the sinister old woman known only as Grandmother.

Mitch helped a naive girl travel through the woods once before. After having his heart viciously yanked out and stomped on, he’s not doing that ever again. When Tasia comes along, all innocent smiles and no sense of self-preservation, he vows to stay far away. But she stumbles upon his furry little secret and he reluctantly agrees to play protector in exchange for her silence.

What seems like a simple arrangement soon becomes complicated as enemies from the past begin cropping up in unexpected places. When Mitch and Tasia stumble onto a villainous plot with far-reaching consequences they must choose between looking out for themselves or risking everything for faceless strangers. With lives–and possibly their hearts–on the line, how will two recovering villains decide what to do? And will their choices be compatible? Or just another betrayal?

Falling for the Wolf is a retelling that combines elements of Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. Set after the events of each of these stories, this no spice romantasy is the 8th book in the To Win a Dark Heart series which retells fairy tales as old as time, but this time it’s the villain’s turn to get a happy ending.

This was so cute and a lot of fun—I enjoyed this story far more than I thought I would! (And the cover is so fun and adorable, it fits our leads perfectly!)

Tasia is a ray of sunshine despite everyone and everything trying to bring her down and her lack of directional knowledge without obvious landmarks was honestly so relatable, lol. Mitch is the perfect grump with a heart of gold and their interactions were the best parts of the story, they are so entertaining and cute together.

The Cinderella aspects were definitely only in Tasia’s backstory and while some parts of Little Red Riding Hood are Mitch’s the majority of that tale reside in the current timeline, and I really love the clever twists the author put on the grandmother character and what was really going on with her, as I only started becoming suspicious with her at the midpoint.

And this village drove me BATTY, my gosh! They reminded me of the tiny town I grew up in and trust me that’s NOT a compliment, lol. Also if they don’t like outsiders and only marry “village”, well, let’s just say there’s probably a lot of inbreeding by now, cough.

A super fun and quick read with a healthy mix of romance, danger, and laughs that I had a really good time with!

‼️Content‼️

Violence: evil people plan to enslave people and burn a town down; a wolf takes down some men (not shown or detailed); a character hits a girl with a frying pan (not shown)

Sexual: a sleazy man looks at and makes vague comments towards a girl (nothing happens beyond that); kissing (not detailed)

Alcohol/Drugs: a drug inducing plant causes compliance in its victims; people are drugged

Other: magic; magical creatures/abilities; a character was cursed as a child to shape shift into a wolf

****Note: I received a free copy of the book from the author/publisher. All thoughts and opinions are most assuredly my own and I wasn’t required to write a positive review. If I was I wouldn’t have read it. 😜****

ARC Review - Falling for the Wolf by Megan Charlie.

This was a cute story with Little Red Riding hood and Cinderella vibes. It was filled with adventure and mystery and some interesting secrets and twists.

I liked our FMC, Tasia, she was not the general soft and whiny girl, but always hopeful and happy despite her situation. If it was me (I’d be the black heart of the story for sure) I would have taken Mitch, maybe Chara and my stash and skipped town. They were not worthy.

Mitch was a bit of a Debby downer at the beginning, but he was understood and I forgive him.

I liked the little sarcasm and humorous parts here and there that made me smile and the fact that poor “Red Riding hood” had no sense of direction! Loved it.

I just feel the ending was a bit rushed and weird. Felt like there was no real feelings of love between them and it’s kind of laughed off.
But all in all, I still enjoyed the story and will recommend to readers who enjoy a fast paced clean fairytale retelling.

This was an interesting take on Little Red Riding Hood. I enjoyed seeing elements from the original and I liked the characters. It does feel slow but overall I enjoyed it.

This was a cute fairytale retelling! I really like how it was told, and the changes the author had made. I wish she had made some different choices for the end, as it was a bit anti-climatic, but it was still cute. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4!

There is a kiss that while it is minimally described over three sentences includes an “involuntary” growl. I would normally not consider that clean, but I forgave it somewhat because it presumably comes from the man being a wolf shifter, but so you know it’s there.

Genre: Fantasy, fairy tale retelling [of Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella]
Tropes: Grumpy/sunshine, banished, forced proximity (on his side)
Setting: Village, woods
Writing style: Dual POV, 3rd person, past tense
Tone: Light with some seriousness
Character- or plot-driven: Character-driven

Other romantic elements:
• 1 hand kiss, with a blush
• Handholding where man wonders how soft woman’s fingers must be under her gloves, 2 sentences
• A woman admires how broad a man’s shoulders are, no lingering

Other sensitive aspect: A man “rakes his eyes over” a woman’s body and speaks in a leering way to her; it’s extremely tame as far as that goes and nothing happens

Favorite aspects of the book:
• The thoroughly unexpected twist
• Tasia’s sunny personality and eagerness to befriend people

Thoughts on main characters:
• Tasia is a sunbeam whose light is wasted in her unwelcoming surroundings until Mitch becomes her grudging escort and is softened by her undemanding persistence in initiating conversation on their walks through the woods. She is very easily distracted and that, more than a poor sense of direction, is what gets her lost so much.
• Mitch is gruff and standoffish due to both his secret and his past experience with the original Little Red Riding Hood. But Tasia’s effect on him proves that he’s much less so underneath it all. He becomes the level head on her shoulders, discretely guiding her when her own head is too much in the clouds to bother pointing her in the right direction.

This is an interesting retelling mashup because the female protagonist is three characters in one: a “wicked” stepsister, Cinderella, and Little Red Riding Hood. And the villains are switched around in both tales.

It’s slow going at certain points, but that gives time for building the connection between the protagonists. Things start out innocently enough, though in retrospect, the escort Grandmother sends Tasia back with the first time should tip you off to something being not quite as it should. I thought it a clever twist, certainly one I’d never think of myself. I might classify this as cozy fantasy because while the stakes are high, the overall tone is pretty light throughout. It’s nowhere near as dramatic as the summary suggests.
____________________________________

Taking money from his blackmailer would make the whole situation messier.

It’s not blackmail if you suggest it without any prompting.

Pagona pitched in without complaint. Tasia wondered if her presence brought out the worst in the younger gal. Perhaps Pagona was a sweet-tempered young woman who was having trouble adjusting to her new reality.

Yes, that’s why she picks on her supposed friend.

Though Bunny displayed contrition and remorse—with tears, even—that the other girls ate up, Tasia didn’t believe it. No one cried genuine tears without a stuffy nose and red eyes.

If you cry hard enough it will happen regardless.

Favorite Quotations:
• “She played me like a triangle.” “I thought the phrase was ‘like a fiddle,’” Tasia couldn’t help inserting. Mitch blew a self-mocking breath through his teeth. “Fiddles take skill and finesse. She didn’t need any subtlety.”
• her ability to get lost faster than rabbits reproduce

Falling for the Wolf by Megan Charlie is the next ARC I read from To Win a Dark Heart, which brings together villains from different fairy tales. This book combines "Cinderella" and "Little Red Riding Hood" with slightly more focus on the latter. The story involves a werewolf, but his transformations have little to no effect on the plot. The espionage and criminal activity make the book feel more like an urban fantasy than a fairy tale. Overall, I thought this book was okay in comparison to the other ones I've read so far in this series.

Tasia is exiled to a foreign land after revealing a secret to a prince and is forced to deliver goods for her extended family. Her poor sense of direction makes this a difficult task for her to follow without a guide, so she seeks the aid of Mitch, who she later learns is a werewolf. Mitch takes an instant dislike to Tasia's family, who are manipulative and abusive. He continues to aid Tasia until an even more dangerous secret is revealed. Now, they must work together to prevent an act of terrorism fueled by a magic obedience-inducing drug.

This book seemed a bit too realistic for my tastes, despite the fairy tale setting. The magical elements seemed to serve as more of a placeholder to make it fit into the series than true worldbuilding. It reads like a fantasy version of a drug ring scandal with a minor love story on the side. Taasia and Mitch get along well enough, but they were too busy trying to stop the over-the-top villains to focus much on their relationship. Like many other books in this series, the fairy tales they came from are used more as backstory for their characters than as a major element of this story.

The main story took a while to unravel. It wasn't until after Tasia met Mitch that the reader learns her role in the "Cinderella" fairy tale, which, in some ways, was more interesting than the experiences she has here. Mitch's wolf transformations don't play a very important role in the book either, aside from giving Tasia an opportunity to get to know him better. It isn't until practically the end of the book that the true wicked plot is revealed.

Compared to the other books in To Win a Dark Heart, Falling for the Wolf is middle-of-the-road. The book blends a few basic elements of "Cinderella" and "Little Red Riding Hood" into an urban fantasy tale of espionage and crime. While Tasia and Mitch's story is engaging, the fairy tale connections feel more like a backdrop than a driving force. I recommend looking into other books from this series before diving into this one.

I received a ARC copy of this book from the author and even though I wasn’t required to post a review, I wanted to offer my honest, voluntary impression after reading it.

This is a combination of elements from Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella combined together where the assumed villains in the story end up with their own happily ever afters!

Tasia is sent to stay with her distant relatives after she alerts a prince to what her stepsister and mother are planning and she ends up being a servant in their house. Later she finds they have been sending these relatives money monthly to keep her there even though she is forced to find work with a disreputable person and has to pay them her wages as well!

Being an outsider no one will hire her to work for them until a old woman employs her to deliver her medicine to her weekly. On her way through the woods she witnesses a transformation and promises to keep the man’s secret if he’ll protect her on her travel to and from the old woman’s cottage.

Over time each learn the secret both are hiding but they also discover a sinister plot against the town that shuns them both because they are outsiders but working together along with an unexpected ally that shows up they work to stop the plot that was to destroy this town of people who look down on those who aren’t from their town.

I enjoyed this take and twists to the beloved fairytales I enjoyed reading and listening to as a child and that I still love re reading ever since I heard them for the first time! I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend you not only read this book but all the other books in this series where the villains you loved to hate now have a fresh perspective and can have their own happily ever afters! After all maybe those villains weren’t really as bad as we thought when we heard these fairytales! It’s nice to contemplate that change as you read these books and see them in an entirely different light!

I have enjoyed this series and highly recommend it to one and all!

An interesting mashup of Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella (I loved the LRRH aspects, but felt the Cinderella parts could have been just a random backstory and been stronger for it, but it appears the creator of this anthology required a mashup of two stories for all the authors involved, so I don't fault this author for that). I didn't really get the Dark Heart part or the Villainous Twist part...a great story overall, but maybe better marketed without the constraints of this anthology? The villains with dark hearts couldn't in any way have been the main characters!

Fantastic chapter titles. A beautiful slow burn between reluctant friends to more. The MMC has a strong character arc/growth. I don't feel like the FMC changed much by the end of the book, as she seems to just be the catalyst for his growth. Still a great character--her anxiety is described well and her personality (while vastly different from my own) is totally relatable.

I did feel like the book started 20% of the way into the story...so much of the initial backstory isn't explained or just glossed over like the reader should already know things, so I was quite lost at the beginning. In the back matter, the author mentions that these characters appear in another series she wrote, and this book is 3.5 in that series, so I'm wondering if this book is better read after those others in that series.

A few mentions of magic and curses, but only in passing and not at all delved into in this book. Not sure how intense the magic is in her other books as this book was my introduction to this author.

All in all, I'm glad I decided to sign up for this arc. I'm definitely interested in checking the author's other books out.

Tasia made a mistake. One mistake which altered her life. For this, she was banished from her home and sent to live with distant relatives. These relatives were more than happy to receive her because she did their laundry, cooked their meals, watched the toddler, cleaned the house, and they even took some of her profits from her job. And the job is a whole other problem in itself ! Tasia couldn't catch a break. The village wouldn't even acknowledge her, so finding employment was very hard. She was approached by Grandmother about doing a weekly delivery to her home. Tasia immediately accepted. This 'easy' job proves to be a bit more difficult than Tasia expected. It was a two hour walk one way into the woods to Grandmother's house. Tasia's sense of direction leads her off the path continuously until one delivery day she unexpectedly runs into Mitch. Mitch has his own secrets and problems. To help her from getting lost, Tasia convinces him to assist her with the weekly delivery jaunts through the woods, and she would in turn keep his secrets. Reluctantly, Mitch agrees.
Throughout the pages of this cute, clean, there is a kiss, and fun story, there is a lot of fun banter, mystery, and intrigue. Let me say, I did not see it coming in who the instigator was behind the towns demise. I also liked the explanation behind the Little Red Riding Hood story and the version that was told. This was my first Red Riding Hood retelling. It also contained Cinderella vibes as well, which Tasia handled well. I really liked the characters Tasia and Mitch and their dedication and loyalty to each other. Over all, I enjoyed this read and it kept my interest throughout. I received an ARC copy, but all the comments are my own.

The FMC (whose name is Tasia, and believe me, you won't forget it) was likeable and sweet. Her horrible sense of direction was so relatable! She kept a great attitude and continued to try making friends in a village that shuns outsiders. The relationship growth between her and Mitch was great and I loved the mystery element.

So… if there was so much that was good about it why not 5 stars? Expectations. This is part of a series where the villains get a happy ending from two fairytales that are mashed together. If this had been pitched as a Little Red Riding Hood retelling, it probably would have been five stars. However there was also supposed to be one of the evil step sisters from Cinderella. Tasia was never evil. She wasn't the villain at all. There's a short section where Tasia recounts to Mitch what happened/why she was sent to an out of the way village, and it honestly sounds like it would have been a good Cinderella retelling. But it made for an unsatisfactory villain getting a happily ever after.

The reason you won't forget Tasia's name is because the first chapter felt like a game of ‘How many times can we say her name?’ The answer: 73. Yes, it bothered me so much that I went back and counted. It didn't seem so bad after the first chapter though.

In short: Read this for a pretty cool take on Red Riding Hood and just forget Tasia is supposed to be an evil step sister from Cinderella. (She kind of makes for a good Cinderella. I'm not sure why the author didn't do a straight up retelling, but went for a what happens after.)

🐺🌹🐇ARC Review: Falling for the Wolf by Megan Charlie
⭐ 5/5 Stars — a darkly romantic fairytale where danger, secrets, and hearts collide
Falling for the Wolf feels like walking through a forest painted with morning light, sharp twigs underfoot, and the scent of pine in the air where every glance hides a secret and every step could be the start of love or disaster.
🌹 Tasia is bright, brave, and endlessly compassionate. A woman blamed for betrayal, she navigates new lands, sinister “grandmothers,” and a forest full of secrets with courage, charm, and red-haired determination.
🐺 Mitch is the mysterious wolf-shifter mercenary with a scarred past and a heart guarded like armor. Gruff, stoic, and secretive, he never meant to fall for anyone. But Tasia’s laughter and warmth slowly break through, and his protective instincts grow impossible to ignore. He falls first quietly, fiercely, inevitably.
✨ This story is rich with enchanted forests, moonlit walks, cursed pasts, secret alliances, poisoned punch, and a slow burn romance that balances danger and tenderness. Every moment hums with tension, humor, and the thrill of discovery.

This was a wonderful no-spice fairytale retelling that beautifully weaves together Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. I loved the slow-burn romance that formed between the grumpy Mitch and sunshine-y Tasia. The mystery surrounding their pasts kept me hooked, and watching them learn to trust each other with their secrets was rewarding. The revelation about Tasia's deliveries to "Grandmother" added an element of intrigue. The world-building was immersive and the stories blended well together. I would recommend this to any fantasy reader who likes a little mystery.

Tasia is forced to stay with relatives who treat her more like a servant than family. They expect her to do everything, including find a job (which isn't easy since she's an outsider). Thankfully, she stumbles upon "Grandmother", who needs someone to deliver medicine to her cottage once a week. It's easy money and gets her away from her "family" for a whole day, but the forest is a dangerous place for someone who gets lost easily. Stumbling around and frightened by all the unknowns of the forest, she comes across something astonishing, which leads the grumpy Mitch to become her reluctant guide for all of her trips. Slowly, he realizes that he truly cares for her well-being, and when they discover "Grandmother's" nefarious intentions, Mitch vows to protect Tasia at any cost. Will they stop the plan in time, and what happens to their bond once the job is over?

This was a cute story. I liked the 'mystery' aspect, with the main characters trying to figure out what the bad person was up to.

I have mixed feelings on Tassia. I liked her enough. I am not sure if she is supposed to be neurodivergent or not. Sometimes she was a little "too much."

I loved Mitch. I love a good grumpyxsunshine and protective MMC trope. I also love a wolf shifter MMC. It was cute watching him handle his feelings.

I think there might be a book connected to to this one? I'm not sure? This is my first book by Megan Charlie. It felt like there might have been another Cinderella retelling before, but I can't be sure because I am not familiar with the authors work.

Overall
What I liked:
Mitch :)
Tassia is really sweet and caring
The plot to stop the bad guy
The cute romantic moments as they are falling for each other
The setting - the walks in the woods sound so peaceful
The overall writing style - the author has good prose.

What I didn't like:
Sometimes Tassia felt a bit too much, like leaning into the flighty/ditzy but sweet FMC trope too much.
being able to identify someone by their sneeze
literally every character around her being mean/rude/obnoxious. There wasn't a single decent person in town?

Those are just little things though.... and overall I really did enjoy the story. I looked forward to seeing how the problems would be resolved and the romance was really sweet.

I received an ARC from the author, all thoughts opinions are my own..

Falling for the Wolf is the eighth book in the To Win A Dark Heart multiauthor series where two characters we usually know as villains fall for each other and get their happy end. In some cases these villains are just misunderstood and there’s a good explanation for their crimes, in others they start as actually quite evil and have a real redemption arc.

This book brings together Tasia, one of Cinderella’s evil stepsisters and Mitch, the Wolf from Red Riding Hood in a completely new story full of mysteries, twists and turns.

I really liked Tasia and her sunshine personality with Mitch being the perfect grump at her side. Tasia herself is kind of a mashup of both fairy tales, since she represents the “evil” stepsister but with character traits you would usually associate with Cinderella while also taking the role of Red Riding Hood.

Mitch had really bad experiences with the “original” Red Riding Hood and is standoffish at first, but can’t really withstand Tasia’s sweet and innocent nature and I really enjoyed how she drew him in through their shared adventure.

This was a quick and fun read which was a bit confusing to me in some parts, but I really enjoyed this mashup with a sweet romance between reluctant allies (at least reluctant on Mitch’s side) and high stakes without being gory or too violent.

* Thank you to the author for letting me read an advanced copy of this book. I leave this review voluntarily and the expressed opinions are my own.

Absolutely adored this mashup of Cinderella and Red Riding Hood and absolutely did not see the twists and topsy-turvy coming!

After a mishap with her stepsister Cinderella, Tasia is exhiled to distant cousins. When she finally manages to find employment, it’s the third try at a bodyguard through a forest en route to Grandmother’s that sticks around and doesn’t scare the creep out of her.

The twists here were amazing - loved them! Why does everyone think old grannys are sweet and innocent? What if Red wasn’t as innocent as the original tale says? What if she was wolf’s first, unlucky love that scarred him for the rest? What if the next girl in a red cape triggers him so much that he is loathe to talk to her….until she displays remarkable - and sweet - feats of topographic cretinism. Yeah, the road to granny’s is a bit complicated. Loved Tasia’s and Mitch’s interactions and how she drew him out of his shell. And the loner redhead in a village of complete hostile strangers - awww, broke my heart. The interweaving of Cinderella with her own surprise twist was genius. Could not put this down.

Recommended for lovers of mashup clean mixed gen (YA/NA) retellings, especially of Cinderella and Red Riding Hood.

If one forgets that it has to be a fairytale mashup and reads it as a “Little Red Riding Hood” retelling, it reads really well with all of the original story reinvented in fun ways. The “Cinderella” aspect was weak as this effervescent, bullied girl does not come off as the villain of that piece (or ever).

The way the two got to know each other felt like a great friendship, not a romance, but perhaps it’s even more slow burn than the action in the plot allowed for (especially the end).

There was a lot of telling what happened instead of showing, especially in the middle of the book. And those irritating girls… Grr.

There were some inconsistencies: Mitch damaged their windpipes, but didn’t kill them. Uhm, a damaged windpipe, especially from trauma as these attacks were, is a medical emergency and needs immediate care or death from asphyxiation will happen. Many bar fights have ended in death because of a jab to the throat. Wouldn’t it have been more merciful of him to just snap their necks? And what was the point of Tasia walking all that way to deliver stuff at Grandmother’s house if it was all later needed in town?

Mostly a fun read with a great ending.

*I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Cinderella & Little Red Riding Hood Mash-up fairytale.
“Mother” Anthi & Stavros treat Tasia like a Cinderella. They expect her to do all the cooking and chores, while Anthi visits her friends all day and leaves Tasia to watch her 3 year old daughter Chara, and allows her older daughter Pagona to primp in front of her mirror or hang out with friends. Tasia meets a kindly old lady who hires her to bring medicine to her cottage, and who asks Tasia to call her Grandmother. But Grandmother is really a wicked younger lady who has put together a dastardly plan to enslave the villagers in the town where Tasia is living with her “supposed” family members. There are twists and turn in the story, and there are mysteries to be solved, but Tasia and her friend Mitch develop a strong friendship as they work together to frustrate Grandmother’s plans. I loved Tasia’s enthusiasm and excitement for learning new things about nature, and her willingness to be a good person and friend. And I loved Mitch’s loyalty to Tasia and his protectiveness towards her. Great story! Actually, I’m not really sure the wolf and stepsister in this story are villains; maybe they are just misunderstood, betrayed, or lack a sense of self-worth?

Falling for the Wolf is a cute and adventurous story with a little bit of suspicion and intrigue. The tale of Red Riding Hood was more distinct in this story but I enjoyed seeing bits and pieces of Cinderella shine through. I really liked how distinctly playful the story felt.

Tasia and Mitch are adorable together, even if they got off on the wrong foot. They are a couple of oddballs against the world. I found it to be really sweet how they looked out for each other and see each other for who they really are in a town of judgmental people. The main characters definitely did not feel villainous to me but that is alright! They felt more misunderstood.

The story was fun, with some characters that felt like old-timey villains and some that were selfish and apathetic. The whole mystery (and foiling plans) of the story was entertaining! I would have liked a little more at the ending: maybe an epilogue of something? Otherwise, it was a cute story!

Thank you to Megan Charlie for an ARC of Falling for the Wolf. All opinions are my own.

Falling for the Wolf by Megan Charlie is the mix up between Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella you didn't know you needed.

When the Big Bad Wolf isn't actually as bad as you think and society's enemy is judged just based on looks, this books starts you off on looks are everything. The fun thing about this series is that, that though you know where the books are going to go with the basic knowledge that you have with the fairy tales you are aware of, you never know how the twist are going to go. The conversations and the banter were cozy to read. It was cute that despite the seemingly big differences in personality the candid conversations, the openness, and the honesty from both of the main characters led to a strong relationship. The antics of both of them were amazing and I loved reading.

If you want a mixture of Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella I recommend this book to you.

Thank you Megan Charlie for the free book.

This is an arc review.

I loved this book! Normally Cinderella isn’t one of my favorite stories but I’m so glad authors give it new and unique retellings like this one! Also Red Riding Hood is one of my favorite stories so that just added to this one.

Tasia is a combination of what is supposed to by Cindy’s “wicked stepsister”, Cinderella herself, and Red Riding Hood. Normally I’ve seen two characters from different stories combined into one but not three. This one does it so well though. She’s very innocent and sweet to some she may seem like a bit of an airhead but she’s quite clever when it all comes down to it.

As for Mitch he is an amazing guy. At first he seems very grumpy and mean but if anyone can break through that gruff and secretive shell it’s Tasia.

This books is filled with so many plots and schemes it’s difficult to put down. My favorite part in this book was with the fanged bunny’s. (If you know, you know. If you don’t… what are you doing here? Go read the book!)

I really enjoyed reading this shorter book, which was a twist on the stories of the villains from Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. I was invested immediately in the plight of Tasia, who in this story is one of the misunderstood stepsisters of Cinderella who stays positive despite her circumstances, and Mitch, who is a man cursed to be a wolf with a heart that is well guarded (but not for long!)

Despite being a shorter novel, this book was filled with intrigue, action, and a slow burn romance built on friendship. I really enjoyed the charming grumpy/sunshine pairing of the two main characters, as well as the gentle bodyguard/“teach her to defend herself/believe in herself” storyline. And it’s always fun to see the outcasts/underdogs/misunderstood characters save the day and learn their true value!

This was overall a very sweet, fun, engaging, and well-written read that I recommend to those who enjoy a fairy tale reimagining or just a good little fantasy romance adventure.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and loved the twist of Mitch’s experience with Little Red Riding Hood being more devious. I enjoyed the banter between the main characters, but wished for more development in their relationship. It felt like it moved too fast, but it did not take away from my enjoyment of the story as a whole. I appreciated the chattiness of Taisa and how stoic Mitch came off. Honestly reminded me of my relationship with my husband.

I’d recommend reading the book if you enjoy playful banter and themes of loyalty, trust, and golden retriever male protagonists. This book does contain a scene where it describes limbs have been bitten off and also
involves the female protagonist working through a certain decree of emotional abuse which may be a trigger for some readers

I received an ARC for the To Win a Dark Heart series. This one was Falling for the Wolf. This is the perfect mix of Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. I wasn't sure what to expect but this was awesome. I haven't seen this twist on Cinderella.
This is Tasia and Mitch's story...
Tasia is the "Evil" step sister of Cindy. She is banished from home after "Betraying" Cindy. Now she is stuck with extended family being treated like a servant. She has a job once a week delivering medicine to an old lady that goes by Grandmather.
Mitch i a wearwolf he is basically a guy for hire. Tasha needs a guide to get to granny's so she asks Mitch he says no until she see him transform out of his wolf form he offers to help if she doesn't tell anyone.
I love these two I loved how their relationship developed. They became friends first. Hop for more in this series.

Falling for the Wolf is a remarkable mesh-up of Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. It's the story of Tasia, a naive, upbeat girl who is incredibly directionally-challenged and Mitch, a grumpy werewolf.

Tasia was banished to a small town to live with her extended family and forced to do all the household chores and get a job to pay for her living. Tasia recruits Mitch to be her guide through the forest on weekly trips to take medicine to "Grandmother" (an old lady in the forest) and slowly charms her way into Mitch's heart. When they discover a plot to enslave the town, they work together to save everyone, despite the mistreatment they received for being outsiders in the small town.

Falling for the Wolf was cute, well-written, and had me hooked throughout the book. The ending felt a bit rushed, but I still enjoyed the story.

Tasia and Mitch started working together because she found out his secret.

I liked the backstory of the characters and how they went from just walking in the woods together to trying to stop a bad guy.

I liked the little red riding hood part of this story but felt the Cinderella part wasn’t as prominent. I could see where it was but it felt like if you didn’t mention it you might not have realized. Tasia is supposed to be one of Cinderella’s evil stepsisters but she isn’t evil she’s misunderstood. I also feel like the romance between the characters didn’t really exist much until the very end.

Overall I liked this book and found their story interesting. I’d give it 3.5 stars but I rounded up to 4. I read this book as an arc.

This was a pretty entertaining story. Though I was a little disappointed that the wolf didn't really play a big part in it. The romance was very sweet. I liked that Tasia and Mitch slowly got to know each other by spending time together. All their hesitant little touches were adorable.
The blending of Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella was done very well. Tasia's "family" brought out the Cinderella parts with their selfishness and indifference. And the cottage core setting with a mysterious grandmother brought out the other fairytale.
Those who enjoy clean fairytale retellings, will be sure to like this one.

Thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Falling for the Wolf by Megan Charlie

Mitch helped a naive girl travel through the woods once before...

Such a cute retelling! This one is a mix of Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood, focusing on the "villains" although the villains certainly arent very villainous in this one. Loved the grumpy-sunshine vibe! Tasia is sweet and bubbly and doesn't even realize that Mitch considers their "arrangement" to be blackmail on her part! And loved the frying pan detail. The only thing I would have changed is that I wished we learned Tasia's background earlier. Would definitely recommend!

Genre: Fairytale retelling

Standalone in To Win a Dark Heart

Favorite character: Mitch (MMC)

Favorite scene: Prince Frank showing up

This was a fun book and again my five stars go to the man! Mitch is at first reclusive as he is a wolf shifter, misunderstood. There was no indication that he has a black heart, the opposite is true. He's quiet, but helpful and opened up to the overly chatty Tasia, who is a stepsister of Cinderella, not evil just a bit too trusting and self-sacrificing. Tasia gives of herself to her so called cousins, and gets involved in quite the plot that is discovered by Mitch. There were strong elements of Red Riding Hood, Granny really had the black heart, and of course, a red cape! No spoilers for the plot climax!

Part of an interconnected series written by multiple authors. Each book can be read as a standalone but some of the characters may overlap.
Twist on the fairy tale Red Riding Hood.
She's sent to stay with distant relatives and is treated like a servant. The only job she could find was to help the village "grandma". She's portrayed as being VERY naive and somewhat simple minded.
He finds himself helping her as she walks back and forth to Grandma's house.
It took me a while to connect with the characters and to get into the story, but once the full truth started to be exposed it helped explain certain behaviors and made all the difference.
