Caged by a neglectful master, Sierra dreams of the freedom she had in the wilds, far from the city-dwellers who use women with wild genes as hunting pets. When her inept owner tires of her biting him, he brings her to Master Kade, a specialist trainer. Upon seeing her pitiful state, Kade confiscates Sierra from the fool who mistreated her and takes her as his own.
From the moment Sierra lays eyes on Kade, she’s sure of two things: the muscular, scarred man carries the same wild gene she does, and just as importantly, he is used to getting his way. Sierra has no intention of being trained without a fight, but she soon learns that her new master is more than ready to make her obey, even if that means a hard spanking on her bare bottom. As much as she resists him, Kade quickly proves he can be gentle as well as firm. Being in his arms makes Sierra feel safe, and when he takes her to his bed she finds herself satisfied in a way she has never felt before.
Her training reaches a new level when Kade allows his best friend, a doctor, to thoroughly, intimately examine his pet, leaving her blushing with shame yet helplessly aroused. Doctor Charles is everything Kade is not—debonair, educated, and a model citizen—yet Sierra finds herself irresistibly drawn to his quiet dominance. Between Kade's wild appeal and Charles' calm allure, Sierra isn't sure where her future lies, until she discovers that while a pet cannot serve two masters, she can be shared by them.
Publisher’s Note: A Short Leash is a stand-alone erotic romance novel set in the same world as The Hunter’s Pet. It contains spankings, sexual scenes including a threesome, pet play, medical play, elements of BDSM, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.
Amazon Top 100, USA Today bestselling, and #1 bestselling author in multiple Amazon categories, Loki Renard writes sizzling hot, occasionally dark and twisted stories of dominance, submission and discipline.
The premise of the book had me hit the purchase button. It is about a girl (think human with cat-like qualities) who is sent to a trainer because her current owner could not control her unruly behavior. She actually repeatedly bites her current owner which is the reason he gives her away to the trainer. To have this all make sense (LOL), the story is set in a different time and place. Got that?
I don't enjoy reading books where the characters are animals or creatures with multiple sex organs. Yes those stories are out there, but this book falls short of that category. I liked the fact that our heroine was so feisty. This set up some wonderful spanking scenes and the banter between the H/h was often quite humorous. I don't think I give anything away when I say that the trainer and cat-like woman grow fond of each other and fall into lust. Can I get a big awe?
I enjoy reading books that allow you to feel the characters emotions. Let's face it, the sex is so much better when you are in the minds of the characters. For the most part, this book falls short in that emotional connection area. It felt like the narrator described things in a play by play fashion, almost like a TV reporter would describe a news event. You get all the facts, but you are not fully connected to the emotions of the people in the story. I guess what I am saying is this book was interesting, hot at times, but was missing that real emotional appeal to call it pantie-dropping hot. Am I asking too much out of my smutty books?
What this book showed me is there are somethings that I just don't get. I had a hard time believing the characters had any real feelings for each other. At times the heroine seemed more animal than humanoid. This probably a sign of good writing by the author but it made it hard to empathize with her. I really didn't like the heroes in this book. Keeping in mind this is complete fiction, I probably would have shot both of them since I would have to agree with the heroine that they seemed to enjoy punishing her with no real reason. Not my cup of tea but it was well written, if you like that flavour tea.
Sierra was wild caught and untrained. She growled, hissed, and bit her owners. When he took her to Master Kade, his poor treatments of her were revealed. She was like an animal half starved and filthy. Kade started treating her like a human pet. They went through several " lessons ", mostly painful for Sierra. Then they realized they loved each other. Kade asked her if she might want to share with Dr. Charles. She felt a pull towards him differently than with Kade. Charles and Kade were closer than brothers and it seemed natural for her to love both men. But Kade had to defend a village against a man-eating tigeress. Sierra felt something was wrong and that Kade was in trouble. She could sense him and see him in her mind. She jumped over the electric barrier and went straight to him. Charles followed her trail and brought help. Kade went to the hospital and surgery. And that is all I am going to say. You will have to read the book for more details. This is definitely a Loki Renard book with all her delicious style. This is an adult only romance book. You gotta love it!
Original story about a ‘pet’ that was mistreated and reformed. Sierra and Master Kade were a well matched couple and then Dr. Charles was added towards the end.
ok, ok, ok, just hear me out... How I started reading this? I have no idea. I think it came up as a suggestion and the hair color on cover sucked me in- my old hair color. Anyhow, pleasantly surprised even though this isn't really my thing. Atypical review for an atypical book:
1. This is book porn in the literal sense of the word. Spanking is not my thing, it's okay here and there but this book is completely surrounded by it. This book appears just to be one of those to get you off. However, there's something complex about it that I have a hard time describing. I've seen this labeled as pet play and while I've read some here and there (again, not my usual thang), there was no degradation, nor "put this tail plug in you and trot around like a pony" kind of deal. In this book, the Chick IS an animal but is a human too. There were many times I kept trying to figure out how this could be but in the end, I just accepted it. 2. So, this not being my usual thing, why did I keep reading? Well, it was really well written for what it is, I really liked the Chick, and I was kind of captivated by the whole world. For a shorter book, the world building was great and I want to read more of it if it was more mainstream. 3. Characters- The Chick was one of the best female characters I have ever read before. She was charming, entrancing and made me laugh out loud several times which I very rarely do. The "funny" wasn't contrived but just written extremely well if you pay attention. Even some slight physical movements by the Chick gave me a sense of who this Chick is. That shows me that this author is extremely capable and talented. I've never read this author before so I have nothing to compare it to but this Chick was so well written, consistently throughout the whole book that I imagine her other works are also well done. THere's not a whole lot about her past or a whole lot of drama about her place in this world, but she was just so charming! The dialogue was good, especially when the Chick was being brutally honest or coyly conniving. The characterization was less for the other characters but for the books length and its purpose, it was enough. 4. Sexy Times: Okay, clearly there is a lot of spanking. I ended up breezing through the last couple spanking scenes only because it's just not my thing. I will say that the spanking scenes aren't overly drawn out, there's just quite a few of them in contrast to other sexy times. There was also some hot steamy sex and even a MMF menage. There was also a lot of real emotions between these characters. Love was often present along with a bit of angst as the Dude's motivation and end goal was not clear to the Chick (nor the reader) until the end so there was some suspense there. 5. My only complaint was that more could have been made about the drama at the end of the book. This was resolved super quick and I think the book would have been better if it had been explored a little more.
Overall: If you like spanking and/or pet play then I highly recommend this book. If you are open minded about your sexual desires, then certainly give this book a shot as its the best of this genre that I've ever read and I read a lot of crazy shit. And I am guessing that its probably one of the most tame of this type of genre too so would be a good starter, I'd think. I probably won't read another by this author unless its within a different genre or if there's a longer, more full fledged book but not because it's unworthy, just because this genre isn't my thing.
This story was just OK. It was nothing more. The problem was that it had so much potential that was not fleshed out.
So she is a pet? The girl is railing against that term, railing against the second class status her lover seems to be content to let her live in despite her happiness. At times she is so confused that it wasn't healthy at all, yet he looks on in amusement and proclaim that he is doing everything for her own good.
The society is just begging to be fleshed out. Why must pets stay pets, even when you can marry them (or mate, whichever) and have children? Why are they still second class citizens when she can contribute perfectly to society, is confident, capable, intelligent and holds fascinating discussions? Her intelligent questioning is directed at her circumstances, directed at her master as to why must she remain subjugated when she is capable of so much more. He ignores those questions or gives answers that reek of excuses and 'because you are not safe in the wild'. Well excuse me! You and your 'citizens' are not safe in the wild either.
The author needs to come up with a better reason she is a pet, is kept as a pet, and her master wants her to be a pet, other than her instincts. He has those same instincts yet he isn't a pet. If it's down to gender, just say it. As it stands, it is unfulfilling and annoying to read.
To cap it off, when he is injured and in the hospital for what has to be days, she is kept from visiting him. I bet it was because pets aren't allowed in the hospital. Forget that she is practically his wife!
And Charles! - That came from left field and then the story was over. A thoroughly unsatisfying read that left both me and the female character confused. Why is she a pet again? Other than her instincts that is. Be plausible and flesh things out and you would have a better story. As it stands, the story's wasted potential and unfinished feel has me annoyed.
3.5 stars. The world building is creative, interesting, and carries the storyline well. Wild ones- those left unprotected from the elements and radiation for generations, run free and untamed. Hunted and sometimes captured, they become pets to the citizens: "citizens think they should be able to own us like animals. We’re not animals.” “No,” Kade agreed. “A wild one is just as much a person as a citizen." Half wild himself, Kade is a trainer, turning wild ones into tamed, domestic pets. Why he cannot free Sierra and allow her to live wild again, I'm not too sure. He says it's for her own protection after having been captured so long, but surely her family would take her back? Yet the fact that he does not lends to eroticism as Sierra is tamed. Through erotic punishments and much patience, Sierra becomes more civilized, although I think Kade was actually quite lenient with her. When Kade chooses to share Sierra, it's pretty surprising. Although I very much liked Charles, it was a struggle accepting this new dynamic which lends more towards female fantasy. Aside from being told how much the two men respect each other, I didn't really feel any connection. And with Kade's evident [controlled] wildness, I wouldn't have expected him to accept another. The addition of Charles increased the already delicious eroticism, and I very much enjoyed the additional kinks. This was my first read by the author, and I'm excited to have a whole new selection of books to devour.
I really enjoyed this story. I liked Sierra's combination of defiance, intelligence and empathy. Unlike so many heroines of capture fantasy books, Sierra was able to get her HEA while never giving up her belief that she is more than just a pet.
The male characters aren't quite as well drawn. Kade is a strong, likeable character, but it would have helped me if we had gotten his POV more. It was a little difficult to figure out what his attitude was to the world he lived in and I would have liked more of his background story.
Charles remains mysterious and isn't really fleshed out enough to understand his role in the story. He was a sympathetic character, clearly a good man, but, again, we just don't know where he's coming from and why he feels the way he does.
It is these shortcomings that bring the book down from 5 stars to 4, but I still heartily recommend the book as a fun, erotic sci/fi set in a very interesting world (I'd love to read more books set there!), with lots of spicy spankings.
Loved this story. I hope Loki Renard will write more stories about this world. It's well written with well developed characters.
It was very easy to be come invested in the relationship between Kade and Sierra. The menage with Doctor Charles didn't add much for me but it didn't detract either.
This is a stand alone story. It does have a prequel, The Hunter's Pet, which I haven't read yet.
Again this author likes to add slightly different concepts to entertain the reader but I really did not like the brattiness of the female lead. However one main character I thought was a really nice addition to play opposite the lead and made the story more fun.
I liked this book better than "The Hunter's Pet" (that is in the same setting). Kade's protectiveness and caring for the abused pet makes for a good read. As usual with these short novels, I finish them way too quickly and want more.
This book was very good! I couldn't put it down. I am curious about hunters and their pets having babies. Are the offspring both male and female citizens or pets? Do they get sold or trained?
