The delivery room decoded—by the internet’s favorite labor nurse.

Childbirth is one of life’s most powerful experiences—but it can also be overwhelming. Too often, expecting parents are prompted to create their perfect “birth plan,” only to feel disappointed or even traumatized if things go differently. That’s where Jen Hamilton comes in.

A labor and delivery nurse, ER veteran, and mom herself, Jen has been a steady presence at thousands of births (and on millions of screens). In Birth Vibes she uses both humor and heart, sharing her own stories to guide readers expectations about what happens in the delivery room. Instead of unyielding checklists, she encourages parents to learn their birth vibes—a blend of values and vision—which unlock the tools to advocate for the personalized care they need.

Birth Vibes is the ultimate companion for anyone preparing to give birth—or supporting someone who is. Warm, funny, and deeply grounded in real-life experience, this is the guide every parent allowing them adapt to whatever birth brings with confidence and calm.

“I highly recommend Birth Vibes for pregnant women who plan to have hospital births.” —Ina May Gaskin, CPM

“This book doesn’t just prepare you for birth; it changes how you think about it." —Hadley Vlahos, RN

“Compassionate, real, and reassuring.” –KC Davis, LPC

Jen is truly an angel. She gave me early access to her book ahead of my induction next week due to a cancer diagnosis, and I’m incredibly grateful.

This book left me feeling prepared, empowered, and confident to make the best decisions for me and my baby. Jen’s trauma-informed, evidence-based approach makes birth feel straightforward and digestible, especially for first-time parents who don’t know what they don’t know.

I’ve seen Jen come across my FYP a couple times in the last few years. The first time I saw her, she was swaddling a chicken, so I instantly fell in love with whatever weird energy she was putting out in to the world. But the more she came across my FYP, the more I realized she does so much more than swaddle chickens (or dogs… or professors…). Her kindness radiates through all of her videos and she’s funny to boot!
So when I was given the opportunity to read an advanced copy of her book in the countdown to my second delivery, I jumped at the opportunity.
Her experience as an L&D nurse means this book is geared towards folks who expect to give birth in a hospital setting. But even if you aren’t, she goes over many of the choices you may face in any birthing situation and advocates for you to make the empowered choice for your own delivery. Your body, your choice.
This book contains many more mentions of birth and pregnancy complications than the other books I’ve read (which focus on home or birthing centre births), but that’s the reality of being in a hospital setting. You’re just not going to have a cesarean at home. So, knowing if I end up at the hospital, like I did with my first, I feel more prepared for the what-ifs. And having an experienced L&D nurse explain a situation much like my own first experience, it gives me more confidence to ask questions before having things done to me rather than for me.
She also brings humour in to her writing, much like in her TikTok videos. And now I can’t wait for my “indoor cat” to become an “outdoor cat” 😆

I’m grateful that the author and publisher allowed for a set amount of early releases for this book! Reading this felt like a bestie sitting you down and giving you all the tea about what to expect (good and bad) in labor. The data cited throughout the book is up to date and has allowed for me to research certain topics even further if I wanted more data points.

This book was the perfect mix of lightheartedness and honesty about pregnancy and birthing. Jen Hamilton lays out facts on many topics without pushing readers one way or another. I love all the information she provides (with sources) without bias. Found this super helpful and informative as a ftm preparing to give birth!

Let me preface this by saying I am no longer the target audience for this book. I am 3 weeks postpartum with my (🤞) last baby. So when this book was offered as an ARC for currently pregnant people, I was just slightly outside of that window (sorry Jen! 🫣).

That being said, I think having JUST gone through birth in a hospital with complications (and delivery by my RN to boot!), I am in a special place to review this book, since everything is so fresh on my mind.

The information contained here is very thorough. Jen presents it all in a fun way that is easy to read and understand. She discusses how to own your birth story, how to communicate your wishes with medical staff, and goes over what you can expect to happen from routine vaginal births to emergency c-sections. She also discusses possible complications so that you can be more prepared for anything.

I really enjoyed the birth stories she shared. Her bubbly and caring personality certainly shone through the page.

I definitely recommend this book for anyone who will be delivering, especially for hospital births. As someone who is "semi-crunchy" (birthed in hospital but declined epidural/pain management), I think the information here would have been very helpful for me prior to birth, especially as a first time mom.

Thanks so much for allowing me to read this early copy!

I received an advanced copy of Jen’s book since I’m due before her official release date. A HUGE thank you to her publishers for allowing us to read her book in advance 🥹

I so very wish I had the information in this book as a first time mom - having a birth that didn’t go at all how I imagined, I would have understood some of the interventions offered to me better and most importantly WHY they were.
I feel so much more prepared this time around for a birth experience that I hope will be much smoother and more how I envisioned the first to go.

Review from an advanced copy received from NetGalley.

I am incredibly honored that I was able to read this book before my beautiful baby arrives. Ironically, my due date is when this book is set to publish. THANK YOU to Jen and her publishers for helping her pregnant besties out with advanced copies!!

This book is filled with stories and expertise that helped calm the anxiety I've felt about birth. It's such a great resource for what to reasonably expect with sprinkles of what can happen if things get dicey. I hope this book helps others as it's helped me.

I laughed, cried, sent many WAIT WTF THIS HAPPENS texts to my mom / friends, and overall just enjoyed the ride that is this book.

I received an ARC of this in advance of my due date! The first half is birth stories, including Jen's own personal birth story. I found her so relatable and funny. This book is written with each chapter having a "vibe" like "communication" - so you can think about your birth plan and the way you are best supported along the way. The second half is factual information about birth and what to expect. I have already given birth once but I still found it helpful. What I liked most were the very real and detailed descriptions of what a procedure would be like, what a medication might feel like, etc. Knowledge is power!

I would say this is definitely a must read for first time moms, particularly if you are planning a hospital birth.

Thank you to Jen Hamilton, Grand Central Publishing, and NetGalley for the advance review copy! I was one of the moms-to-be who signed up for the preorder in order to read a copy before my baby’s due date in February. I was so excited for this opportunity because I discovered Hamilton’s content years (?!) ago when she showed an example of a comment from her editor on a draft of the book. I wasn’t yet ready to start my family at that point, but I knew I’d want to read that book to prepare myself once it was published.

Fast forward to now, and I have a baby due fairly soon…and now, I’ve gotten to read this book!

She covers SO MUCH useful information, and by using anecdotes, clear explanations, and a breakdown of many of the procedures or protocols someone might encounter, she demystifies the potential experiences someone might have in labor. Her writing sounds just like her; I really appreciate the humor and perspective she brings to the topic! It really helped me feel more confident and prepared for what I might encounter myself in the near future.

If you or a friend have your own labor experience on the horizon, I really recommend snagging this book when it is released in May.

When I found out Jen’s book was coming out months after I was set to give birth, I was crushed. Imagine my joy when she announced she had convinced her publisher to release an early copy to people currently pregnant! Then another wrinkle, they were going to start making the list of people on February 22–my exact due date! 🥲

I signed up anyway. Then, by a stroke of (un)luck, I went way past my due date. I got the book, was able to breeze through it in two days (since I couldn’t get up off the couch) and still had to wait a few days for my induction. In other words, the book came to me at the perfect time, so here’s my review!

First, if you’re a fan of Jen, you know what you’re in for. Her cadence is hilarious, her compassion and honesty and drive for good outcomes all shine through. If you don’t know who she is, watch a few of her videos before you read the book so you can picture the cheeky grin as she says things. It improves the aesthetic.

The first half of the book is anecdotes about her work as a L&D nurse, through which she sets the tone. The second half is practical advice for how to get the vibes you want out of your birth experience. The main thesis is that a birth plan is great and all, but as they say ‘man plans, God laughs’. If you go into the experience focused on vibes, you’re much more likely to not only get what you want, but to come out of the experience with less trauma.

I did not end up writing anything down. When I got to the hospital, they asked and I told them as much. My birth plan has always been “survive”, which is achievable, but this being my second rodeo I had a better idea of the possibilities. So they went down the list of interventions to go over how I felt about them. But after that, I started to tell them what I really *wanted*. Music, movement, when to start pain meds, how the first time went and what I was worried about.

Jen emphasized that who you get as a nurse matters a lot. They’re all going to be good at what they do (most likely) but some personalities gel and some don’t. If you don’t have rapport with your nurse, ask for a new one. I didn’t have to ask, the hospital was super busy and the cast rotated until the first major shift change. But by the time I was on #4, they had refined their image of me and were intentionally handing me off to someone I would get along with. This was integral to how well my experience went, and I can thank Jen for giving me the idea to cultivate that.

I’d told my nurse I wanted to sleep as much as I could post epidural, and she told me she did have to fend people off to allow that because the monitors kept slipping but that she “will fight them” because I “was doing this how I wanted”. I did not end up needing pitocin, which I hadn’t even thought was possible, but it was for me and the nurse was my best ally in that. She knew where my head was at and told me it was an option, and then *fought* for me to have it. The book really helped me in understanding how to get to that level with her.

I had my baby at almost exactly shift change time, so my last nurse came in to participate. Everyone who came in and out commented on my playlist and how fun it was to have music on. And, to skip the not so gorey details, as the doctor was leaving the room he said to his med student “it almost never goes that well, so maybe that was a bad example of average”.

The thing I was worried about, hemorrhaging like I did with my first, didn’t happen. They got everything ready as if it would, and then it just.. didn’t. And I honestly think being prepared and relaxed and in the right headspace had a big part to play in that. Being ready for that possibility was a big part of cultivating my needed vibe, and everyone was on board with that from the jump.

Was Jen Hamilton responsible for me having the breeziest birth experience I could have hoped for? Not solely. But did she give me the inside scoop on how nurses think and operate, allowing me to guide the experience and cultivate the vibe that made everyone say “well damn”? Absolutely. If you’re getting ready to have a baby, this is a fantastic book that covers most of the possibilities and sets a beautiful tone. Can’t recommend enough. 😌

(And thank you so much, Jen and publisher, for the early release! 🙏)

When it was announced Jen Hamilton was writing a birthing book I knew I’d buy it. Regardless of my pregnancy status at the time she has always been a social media presence that feels like she would absolutely be your best friend. When it happened that I was pregnant but would deliver prior to the release date I was so bummed. In late January 2025 Jen announced she was doing a pre release and I was ecstatic.

I began reading the pre release after trying to start some other birthing books and being a little let down. They all feel just a little cold, sterile, and like they’re written from the perspective of someone you can’t relate to. Reading birth vibes is like hanging out with a knowledgeable best friend who you trust to give you the facts, no sugar coating, with a few funny stories sprinkled in. The way she handles every topic from how pregnancy will progress, to detailing labor options, to post birth choices and even discussing pregnancy loss with such grace. This book is truly a gem. Just like Jen. I know it’s silly and sounds so cliche to say but I truly feel not only more prepared for birth, but like I’ve gained a friend through reading this book. I feel better equipped to endure the last few weeks of pregnancy, go into labor with a birth vibe that’s now a little more comprehensive than “healthy baby, healthy mom,” as I had planned for before. And I can’t wait to buy this book for every friend in the future as soon as they’re pregnant.

Birth vibes will absolutely be the textbook for birth for the millennials generation and I’m so glad I got the honor or pre reading it. 5 stars, highly recommend, will read again and suggest to other friends.

At 30 weeks pregnant I realized I wasn’t prepared for birth and thankfully remembered Jen’s offer to allow soon to be moms to read this book before it was released to the public. I panic bought the book and sent in my receipt on the last day of the offer, and I am SO grateful. I don’t know of any other books out there that go into great detail about all things birth in a quick, digestible fashion. Jen starts the book out with her own birth story and why she went into labor and delivery. This chapter section had me laughing out loud and crying (pregnancy hormones). She then goes into a bunch of different birth stories and helps you tailor a unique birth plan based on these stories-more based on what you would like the vibes to be like in the labor and delivery room (ie communication style, birthing support system) rather than the nitty gritty, These stories were beautifully written and will stick with me. Then she goes into the details of birth and what you may be offered to help you make more informed decisions during birth all while sprinkling in the Jen Hamilton humor and sincerity we all know and love. After reading this book, I am less panicked about birth and feel way better prepared-before reading the book, I was scared of the epidural but now knowing the process, I am more open to the idea of one. This book also showed me that I will have a lot more autonomy than I originally thought and I feel prepared to speak up during labor and delivery. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have read this book before the release date and can’t wait until one of my friends becomes pregnant because I can’t wait to share this book!

I am extremely thankful to have received early access to this book and was able to read it prior to my due date.

I feel much more prepared for birth and to make an informed decision should my “birth plan” - (I hate that term) not go according to plan. As a nurse myself, I want to know as much as I can about something before going through it and nothing is more foreign to me than labor and delivery.

The first part of the book Jen shares a handful of stories from her career while working in labor & delivery. These stories provide the reader with other patients experiences of labor and the complications that may arise while one is in labor. One that stuck out to me was a patient that was very rigid about sticking her birth plan despite things going awry.

The second half of the book she breaks down the different stages of labor, pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management options, rupture of membranes, various methods of induction of labor, cesareans, vacuum and forceps, etc. all while remaining unbiased. She is simply providing pregnant women with a valuable resource to learn about each possible scenario so they can make an informed decision should their birth not go according to plan.

She also touches on decisions that parents will be responsible for after the child’s birth like erythromycin ointment, vitamin k, hepatitis b and circumcision.

References are provided should you wish to further research anything she mentioned.

I wish this book had existed before my first baby was born and I feel so fortunate I got to read it before #2 comes (any day now; I'm 38 weeks pregnant!)
I really appreciated Jen's candor, how seriously she takes the health and safety and comfort of who she calls "my pregnant friends" during their L&D journey, however it happens and however it turns out. My favorite part of the book was honestly where she broke down all the potential pain control methods (medicated and non-) and actually bothered to explain what an epidural might feel like and how that experience could be for someone receiving one. It seems crazy but I have never actually come across this information in all my research - because folks who want you to have a "natural" birth with no pain control just tell you about what they think are the pitfalls of getting an epidural, and everyone else assumes that of course you want one because they're a miracle of modern medicine and make the birth process less barbaric. As someone who did not have an epidural with my first, reading the descriptions in Jen's book made me realize why people love them and why I will probably make the same choice to avoid it with the birth of my second child, if possible. This just sounds like something that is not for me.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is pregnant or the birth partner of a pregnant person.

I have been following Jen on social media over the last 6 months and was excited to be given the opportunity to read her new book early!

I have read and listened to quite a few labor and delivery books. Jen’s perspective is unique because of her background in nursing specifically and her desire to really connect with her patients in a hospital setting. It was enlightening to hear experiences from her end in the labor and delivery room. It helped me understand better why interventions are suggested how nurses can be a very positive entity of your birth team. I smiled, I cried, and I laughed. Jen brings a comical relief to the topics discussed, which helps bring my personal anxiety down a notch.

One of my favorite parts is when she tells her own story about celebrating birthday buddies (those babies that end up sharing her own birthday). Very sweet. Wishing Jen was my labor and delivery nurse in a few months. Unfortunately, I live across the country from her. Sending positive vibes out into the universe that nurses like Jen will be by my side; advocating, supporting, believing, listening, enlightening, and empowering me to make the next best decision that will lead to meeting my new baby girl.

This is an incredibly informative and empowering guide to labor and delivery. It walks through the ins and outs of birth in a way that feels practical and realistic, including how to advocate for yourself and tailor your experience to fit your needs. I especially appreciated that it also addresses what to do when things do not go according to plan, which feels just as important as preparing for the ideal scenario.

Jen’s writing style is approachable, engaging, and easy to digest. It never felt overwhelming or clinical, which can sometimes happen with birth books. Instead, it felt supportive and encouraging. The information is clear, thorough, and presented in a way that builds confidence rather than anxiety.

The personal birth stories and anecdotes were a wonderful addition. They made the information feel grounded and relatable, not just instructional. This is a fantastic resource for expecting mothers, whether you purchase it yourself or receive it as a gift. Even if you are hesitant about reading traditional birthing books, this is one I would absolutely recommend having on hand.

Thank you to Jen Hamilton and NetGalley for the advance reader copy. I am due in a month, and I feel very fortunate to have read this when I did.

I have loved following Jen Hamilton on Instagram for a couple of years now so when I heard she had a book coming out this year, I was really excited. Not to mention, I am pregnant so her book would’ve very relevant to what I would’ve going through. The release date of the book however, was after my due date which deflated my excitement somewhat. When she announced that her publisher had agreed to release the book ahead of time to women who preordered the physical copy- I was ecstatic! I was going to be able to read the book before my baby arrived!!
And read it I did. It is such an informative book about pregnancy, labor, birth, and motherhood. I learned so much, was comforted by so much, am going into my own birth experience with so much more confidence and feeling more informed than I thought possible. I loved the practical advice, the anecdotes, and the infusion of Jen’s iconic humour an heart. This book felt like a hug. I imagined her reading this book to me (she does narrate the audio, though I have not listened to it) and was just so comforted.
Knowledge is power and Jen has truly set her readers up for success.

Thank you to Netgalley, Grand Central publishing, and Jen Hamilton for allowing me to read this book ahead of schedule. I am beyond grateful.

This book put me into labor!
(not really but the timing was hilarious)

The first half of the book is stories from her time as a labor and delivery nurse with takeaways for the reader when preparing for birth. The second half is information on different interventions and situations that may occur during L&D. Jen Hamilton brings her compassion and humor to this book to prepare you for the intense situation that is birth.
Throughout this book, I laughed, I cried, and I learned, which is really the point. And when I went into labor the week I got this book (I was about 70% through at that time but have now finished it #newbornLife), I already felt more equipped for the experience. When things went slightly off the rails, I could hear Jen's voice comforting me along with my actual nurse. I was able to better advocate for myself and make decisions that I had thought about instead of out of fear.

Thank you to Jen Hamilton and her publishers for making this advance copy available for pregnant friends who were due before the publish date. It was extremely helpful. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

As someone in their third trimester, this book was the best! It made me feel so prepared and confident for labor, I feel so informed and empowered, helped me understand my birth preferences or birth “vibes,” and honestly even excited for labor whereas previously I was terrified. I skipped a couple of the chapters with trigger warnings in order to maintain the positive “vibe,” but it is sooo helpful to know what the experience is like, how to feel safe, comfortable, confident, supported and make your voice heard. How to choose the proper doula, hospital and OB provider, how to lean on your support person, be actually present and not just let things randomly happen TO you. I have a fear of hospitals and mistrust of doctors and this helped demystify the entire experience in the L&D room. I know how to communicate, what questions to ask, what my options are, what I don’t like, what I don’t want to know, etc. the first half where she describes birth vibes is my favorite hands down. I laughed so many times she is soo funny and so comforting and so knowledgeable. Love you Jen!! I felt like we could be best friends hahaha

I was given an advance copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest feedback.

This book is like a loving hug from your supportive best friend during your pregnancy. Jen does a great job of drawing the reader in and instantly making them feel comfortable, in part because of how accepting and inclusive her stories as a L&D nurse are.

Even as a person who has given birth before, I found myself learning a lot about the why behind many decisions/situations which can come up during the labor process and feel better informed and more empowered for my next delivery.

All the anecdotes are incredibly heartfelt, and I found myself crying (the good kind of tears) multiple times throughout. She places such an emphasis on self-advocacy and opening up about the compassion your nursing team should be showing you without pulling punches about the reality of certain situations which can arise during labor or pregnancy.

I could tell how much she genuinely loves what she does, and I hope everyone has the pleasure of reading this book to help prepare themselves for giving birth.

I feel so lucky to have been able to read this early before my due date. It was also exactly the kind of book I was looking for. I know that labor involves a lot of unknowns and not everything can be planned for exactly, but it is nice to be able to go in as prepared as possible. I appreciate the tone of Birth Vibes, very encouraging, but also completely real. I trusted that I was getting information that I could then use and apply as felt best for me and my situation. I feel more prepared so that even if the unexpected comes up during my labor I will still be able to advocate for what I need to get through it in the best way possible. Jen Hamilton is also a natural storyteller which made it so much easier to get through what can sometimes be dense medical information. She was also able to illustrate the principles and how to apply them in a way that can lead to the best birth vibes for each reader.

This book was excellently written. I love Jen’s online presence and how silly she can be and this book is nothing short of that. Her personality shines through while giving you a look at different birth stories and experiences. As a nurse this also scratched a special part in my brain because even though she explains things in such a way for everyone to understand I can also relate to the medical knowledge showcased.

If you had no knowledge about birth after reading this you would have way more of an understanding. Part 1 discusses patients and their experiences and different ways to effectively communicate and make choices for you and your child. Part 2 goes into the nitty gritty about labour and delivery with interventions and possibilities that may occur. This book will leave you with tools and empowerment when it comes to labour and delivery

The epilogue is beautifully done written about a patient and her experience with still birth. It brought me to tears.

I love Jen Hamilton, so it’s no surprise that I loved her book! I would add this to your TBR no matter who you are — because even if you’re not having a baby, you know somebody who is, or has, or will be. And it’s nice to be informed about what they’re going through. If you are pregnant, I think this is a helpful guide to a variety of things you could expect to happen. Easy to follow, fun anecdotes, real research, detailed facts, etc.

A main theme of the book is empowerment. Nurse Jen does a great job at teaching the reader how to advocate for themself and that they can have an empowered birth story.
“You could have a birth that goes completely off the rails, but if you were given the emotional and physical care you deserved, you could leave that experience feeling empowered, in control, and respected—all because you were able to make your own informed and empowered decisions at every turn in the road, with the collaboration of a team that cared about you as a person.”

I’m so grateful to be able to read this book prior to its release! Jen has done a great job in balancing real information and facts with levity and humor to make the sometimes heavy content accessible to readers. I consider this a must read for any Pregnant Friends! Her recognizable humor that likely drew you to her social media is present in this book and makes for a very pleasant and enjoyable read. I did skip the epilogue as it contains a story about stillbirth and I’m sensitive to that topic right now as I’m pregnant, but the chapters that contain sensitive topics do have headers that warn readers to “choose their own adventure” and skip ahead if they aren’t ready to address that topic. Overall, I’m so thankful to be able to read this ahead of my due date within the next few weeks and will be utilizing many of the suggestions made within the pages!

Jen’s book had me laughing audibly (like…SO loud I was afraid I was going to wake up my husband if I read after he went to sleep!) I laughed. I cried. Her words have a way of bringing calm & peaceful feelings about decisions I will have to make. Because of reading her book, I am more informed and feel more empowered and ready to tackle my 2nd labor & delivery journey more than I ever have. Jen is a beautiful writer who does not hold back. There are so many moments of transparency and hard or scary truths within the book but sprinkled among them are so many moments of sweet compassion and humor. The only thing I hate is that this book made me appreciate and respect her so much more than I already did and I can’t have her in the delivery room with me. You better believe I will be bringing Birth Vibes, the next best thing, in my hospital bag right along with me though!

Review of advance copy received from Netgalley

Finished this book in one day with zero questions and minimal fears left about giving birth. I am scheduled for an induction at 41+5 in two days and I am so grateful I read this before going in! I have been waiting to try and have the most natural birth possible, but I feel so much more prepared for any interventions that happen now that my induction is approaching. I laughed, cried, and everything in between. It really felt like I was having a convo with a very educated close friend. Thank you, Jen, for the prerelease. You spared me, my nurses, my partner, and my doctors from a LOT of medical anxiety.

This is a MUST READ for anyone planning on a hospital birth. I will absolutely be passing on the physical copy to any new moms I meet. <3
