Rate this book
God's radical grace is unbelievable, unexplainable, and definitely undeserved. But it's the foundation of our faith. In this new 365-day devotional, Tullian Tchividjian reminds you every day that the gospel is good news. It's God's message that He loves us even when we don't deserve it. These short readings each contain a truth from God's Word that will set you on a solid foundation for the day—a foundation of God's grace, goodness, and unconditional love.

We live in a self help, works based culture. This mindset doesn't stop in the church either. This is a great book for those daily reminders that it isn't about us. We can't earn our salvation and we shouldn't try.

I thought I would be bored by the same message every day - but I was not. I think when we truly embrace Grace and what that means -- it makes us more grateful, less stressed, and more in love with God.

This isn't a Bible study. I've seen some reviews where people knock the book for not having discussion questions, longer verse passages, and that sort of thing. If you are looking for that kind of thing, you need to look for a Bible study not a devotional. Most devotionals are organized like this one. A Bible passage is referenced at the top and then he tells a story related in theme or message.

My favorite Christian writers take complicated or big concepts and make them easy to relate to and understand. He does this. He uses a lot of cultural references like movies and television characters. I think this is great because it shows how you can (and should) look at everything -- through the lens of your faith. Christian concepts aren't limited to what is labeled as such. The truth is always the truth.

I found myself nodding and thinking about how true his statements were.

One of my favorite concepts from the book was near the beginning. I'm paraphrasing, but he talked about how a stranger who just walked into our house without knocking and wanted to eat dinner would get thrown out -- and maybe we'd even threaten to call the police. If that same person walked in with our son - they'd be welcomed into the home and the dinner table. Jesus is our ticket to be welcomed to the dinner table.

The moment grace is spoken into our lives, we become alive. That is the gospel. Grace gives life where there is death. Grace does not give up. We are given in this devotional examples of what grace is. What it looks like and how we are to receive it so we too can give grace.

With the sin of others, do we separate ourselves from them with an us against them mentality? I love this quote To the extent that we ignore (or run from) our own sinfulness, we will be unable to care for other sinners. We will be unable to extend forgiveness to others until we are honest about the extent to which are forgiven . Ungracious people are those who haven’t come to grips with their own dire, daily need for grace. The most forgiving people are those who are coming to daily, deeper terms with their own need for forgiveness. . Along with grace, we can never learn enough about forgiveness. They are linked together.

How does faith and grace work…Love is faith worked out by us for our neighbor horizontally; faith is love worked into us from God vertically. The implication of course, is that love is absent to the degree that faith is missing. If I am not trusting that everything I need in Christ I already possess (lack of faith), then I will be looking to take from you rather than to give to you (lack of love). I’ll be concentrating on what I need, not on what you need. I will be looking out for me, not you. …we need the gospel 24/7. The proclamation of who God is…our faith is based on the character of God. Our trusting God comes to us as we know him as our Father.

The Problem is the extent to which we believe in our freedom is the extent to which we will never acknowledge our need for a Savior. Jesus came to set the captives free.

This is devotion is a treasure of the goodness of God. Tullian Tchividjian is the grandson of Franklin Graham and thru this devotion you get a glimpse of his own life. The good, the bad and the ugly more or less just like the rest of us. I will be getting a hard bound copy of this for myself and gifts for others that need encouragement in the faith.

Each day starts with a verse and about 5 minutes worth of reading that will last you all throughout the day. This is not a “treadmill” type of devotional with a list of do’s and don’ts but as the title suggests all that Christ has done for us. It is finished.

A Special Thank You to David C Cook and Netgalley for ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Let me put this out there...I've heard a lot about Tchividjian. He is the grandson of Billy Graham. My grandmother that Billy Graham hung the moon and had a direct line to God. After reading this devotional, I understand that Tchividjian is a genius. He has an amazing respect and knowledge of the Word of God. Why wouldn't he? He has been raised in a Christian family (so have I...but that's another story). To get on with the review of this book...

Tchividjian offers exactly what he states in the subtitle, "365 Days of Good News". There is one page dedicated to each day of the year. There is a scripture noted at the top of the page, along with a couple of paragraphs with his thoughts about that scripture. Some have compared this book with "My Daily Bread" that you can get free every month. This devotional is informative and insightful...just not hitting my learning style. I need more direct correlation to the Word of God. Which is why I believe the Bible is still the BEST devotional tool...

I’ve heard a lot about Tchividjian (pronounced chi-vid-jian) from friends of mine that adore his teaching. He is actually the Grandson of Billy Graham. He’s a pastor and I have listened to his sermons. Overall, he’s pretty solid.

This devotional surprised me because it’s basically any typical one you would grab off a shelf. It has a verse at the top and then a couple, or few paragraphs, on His thoughts about it. Basically “My Daily Bread” sort of thing.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with that. I have an app on my phone that does the same basic thing. I just expected a bit more from him. It’s a good tool to use alongside time spent in the Word. It is certainly not an “everyday devotion and that’s as deep as you go” kind of book.

Overall, it is clear. He’s a brilliant man, so he speaks as such. It’s got some good “meat” in it, but it is just less than I expected. He really has the ability to create a much more in depth devotion.

On a side note, I do feel that is something that is really lacking in devotion materials. They are all kind of the same little thing. Verse here, quip here, go on your way. Some even go as far as a little verse at the bottom. How about something with verses, questions with spaces for you to answer, depth, digging into the Hebrew, Greek, and context? I feel like it is quite patronizing that we are being fed such little devotionals, as if that’s going to sustain us. So, for me, I understand that means I need to supplement. But not everyone realizes that and uses it as their time with God between church every Sunday.

I do thank you, netgalley, for sending this book my way. I was curious about it and wanted to see what he was going to bring to the table. Here’s to many more!! (:

My friend who is a pastor really likes some of Tullian Tchividjian's other writings and posted when this book was on sale on Kindle/Nook. So I picked it up. It is a daily devotion book, with a devotion for each date. Each devotion has an associated Bible passage, but it is not always directly quoted, so I recommend having a Bible or YouVersion handy to look it up.

I enjoy the fact that these devotions are short. It is hard to find time in the day for a good devotion or Bible reading. I also like the fact that I have the digital copy of this, which means I always have access to it on my phone, tablet or laptop and I can read it quickly in the dark while I'm waiting for my children to fall asleep. Tchividjian has a good sense of the balance of law and gospel, something I find lacking in many churches today. Even though he is not of my exact denomination, I have not found any issues so far with his doctrine either. He tries to use a lot of concrete examples to illustrate his points.

2016: I decided to try this for my morning devotional and at one month in, decided it was not for me. Each day gives a verse (usually just one verse) as the verse for the day and then a reflection on it by the author. My process was to read the verse in its context (just used my Bible's subheadings to determine how much to read) and then I would reflect on it myself before reading the author's comments. It started off well enough, but by the middle of the month I found myself wondering what the comments had to do with the verse for the day and what the verse was saying in its context. I am a stickler, I know, but this was not hitting my devotional needs. So, I moved on. I am sure that the Jesus Calling fans would love this and, for what it's worth, I think this is far better than Jesus Calling.

"If we ever hope to love our neighbor as ourselves, which is precisely what God's law calls for, it will depend on faith. God stokes faith through the Gospel's proclamation, and since our faith needs constant stoking, proclamation of the gospel needs to be constant. As long as love is always needed, faith must be fueled and the only fuel for faith is the Gospel."

This devotional proclaims the Gospel each day for a year, using Scripture from all over the Bible. Tchividjian shows the Gospel's relevance to every single aspect of our lives over and over. A controversial figure who's lived a bit of a checkered life, Tchividjian is in a prime position to write about grace; he gets it. Jesus said that he who has been forgiven much, loves much. I can see this truth meted out in this devotional.

This is a joy-inducing, faith-producing book.

I have this problem wherein I don't actually read devotions in a year - I read them in a night. All in a row. With tears flowing down my face and scribbling notes as I go. I figure as long as the point is being made, it doesn't matter how I'm reading it.

Tullian Tchividjian is one of my very favorite authors, mainly because he not only talks about grace, he lives it. He has failed publicly, yet has made decisions to still live in the spotlight and choose to allow the grace he preaches to be shone upon him - I applaud the people offering him grace, and applaud his character that is walking in that grace to become new again.

This book is definitely a good read! I highly recommend it to anyone, new Christian and seasoned veteran of the faith.

Refreshing, inspiring, surprising, reflective devotional. The brief passages prompt me to stop, reflect, and Thank God for His Love & abundant daily graces. Good book

This is, in my opinion, the best devotional book period!!
I read portions of it from a print copy here and there in the past; but for 2019 I needed to hear God's clear grace and I'm read this daily and faithfully. Tullian Tchividjian understand the importance of God's grace and the clear Gospel ... and he delivers . every . day!!!
I'm reading other decoys for the new year, but I k ow I will return to this one again, and again!
These excerpts from his other books, articles, sermons, are the perfect size to read and reflect upon each morning to start the day yet powerful enough to ponder and apply throughout the day.
This is no "Atta boy", "you're fine", "just try a little harder" or "just pray a little moe" devotional like so many others. No! Here you will hear about the grace of Jesus Christ who is with you, and for you, in every circumstance; the One who loves you at your worst and forgives you like no other! This book delivers real Gospel for real sinners every day! For that, I am most thankful and give it my highest recommendation!!

Devotionals are hard to pull off. In my experience, it can seem like you are either saying the same thing every day or just having a glorified, short academic study. Tullian does a wonderful job of not navigating away from the simplicity of the gospel message, while bring unique starting parts each day.

I have read several of Tullians books, and always come away with a better understanding of what the gospel means, what Jesus love is all about. Highly recommend this book.

A good daily devotional, continuous reference to popular movies and television shows became a distraction at times, especially ones I have not viewed. Otherwise, good...SLT
