Susan never imagined herself an amateur sleuth, and she certainly never goes looking for trouble, preferring days spent walking her loyal dogs Libs and Rocco, and maybe even a dip in the sea to cool off after this interminable heatwave.
When she hears of a break-in at the vet’s where her new neighbour works, Susan’s curiosity is piqued.
And then, few days later, the lead vet, Peter, mysteriously disappears. They assume it's business related until his body is washed up on the beach close to his cliff-top home.
Susan is convinced he was murdered and slowly discovers that each of the small group of suspects have a motive. Is the killing linked to the break in… or is this a crime of passion?
Once again, Susan finds herself piecing together clues in her search for the truth. Can she untangle the lies before someone else dies?

Susan lives in a lovely setting where everything appears serene and calm on the surface. Only, it isn't. There are lots of twists and turns and I lost track of how many times I changed my mind about who was the most likely culprit. The prologue sets the mood as we're briefly in a killer's mind, leaving us uneasy as we wait to find out the details. As such, the fact life goes on as usual for awhile, dog walks and ocean swims included, prepares us but not for how many seem to have had a reason for wanting the victim dead. It reminds us that a killer can walk amongst us anytime, their life rarely allowing a glimpse into whatever drove them to kill.
We meet Susan early on (this was my first read of the series) and while tired of the overbearing heat of a seemingly never ending heat wave, she's going about her life. We even get to meet not just her friends but the eventual victim, a local vet whose clinic was just broken into. There are quite a few characters, too, so it took me a bit to sort them all out, occasionally getting confused about who was with who or married to who or whose dog was which. I did quickly suss out that Susan seems involved in a slowly budding romance with Robert, a retired cop, but he was in France with his daughter for much of the book, There always seemed to something hovering just beneath the surface, albeit you're not sure what it is about. Everyone seemed to have secrets. Heck, even Susan seems to have a secret of sorts that involves Steve, her ex-husband who shows up in town expecting to stay at her place briefly....for work, of course.
Bottom line, lots of secrets on the Isle of Wright. Who'd have wanted to kill the local vet and why? He was a keeper of secrets, too, of course, from the past and present. Let's say his wife didn't seem enthused about his news of a big break. But, more than enough said. Once you sort out the characters, which may be more the fact this was my first read of the series than not, it's an intriguing mystery with a growing sense of unease always just below the surface. Lots of twists and turns and, as noted, misdirection that have you pointing to one suspect after another as whodunit, some more than once. Thanks #BoldwoodBooks for introducing me to this intriguing book and author. While it was maybe a bit out of my usual cozy mystery niche, I found it an interesting read and will definitely be back. It was a plus to me that the story was centered around a small town vet practice, too, animal person that I am. Loved the teaser at the end regarding Susan's future.
A Summertime Murder is exactly the kind of cosy mystery I love to curl up with — charming setting, gentle humour, and just enough suspense to keep the pages turning. Returning to the Isle of Wight with Susan and her two loyal dogs, Libs and Rocco, felt like slipping back into a familiar holiday spot.
Susan isn’t your typical sleuth, and that’s what makes her so endearing. She’d honestly rather be paddling in the sea than poking around a crime scene, but when her neighbour’s workplace is broken into — and then the lead vet, Peter, turns up dead — her curiosity (and kindness) naturally pulls her into the investigation.
The mystery itself is satisfyingly layered without ever feeling heavy. A small, close-knit group of suspects, each with their own believable motives, gives the story that classic cosy feel. I really enjoyed the mix of seaside charm and slightly darker undercurrents running through the heatwave setting — it adds just the right amount of tension without losing the warmth of the series.
Watching Susan quietly piece together clues, follow her instincts, and untangle all the little lies made this such an enjoyable read. The Isle of Wight atmosphere is lovely, the pacing is light and summery, and the twisty trail kept me guessing right up to the end.
A perfect escape for anyone who loves gentle mysteries with heart, community, and a determined amateur sleuth you can’t help rooting for.
with thanks to Mary Grand, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC
A Summertime Murder by Mary Grand is the fifth book in The Isle of Wight Killings series.
Susan, our familiar amateur sleuth, once again finds herself drawn into a murder mystery when the body of Peter, the lead veterinarian, washes up by the sea. The investigating officer asks Susan for her help, and true to form, she never backs down from a mystery. She gladly accepts and also seeks her friend's opinions as the case unfolds. With numerous suspects and plenty of believable motives, the mystery quickly becomes tangled. Can Susan uncover the truth before it’s too late?
This is a cozy small-town mystery with a steady, slow-building pace. There’s no rush, allowing the investigation to unfold thoughtfully and in detail. The story is filled with secrets and multiple suspects, all revealed gradually, which keeps the intrigue alive. Alongside the main mystery, there’s also a subplot involving some trouble in Susan’s love life, adding a personal touch to the story.
My favorite part was the final reveal of the murderer and their motive, which was both satisfying and well-executed. This book is perfect for readers who enjoy calm, slow-burn mysteries with plenty of atmosphere.
“A Summertime Murder” by Mary Grand the 5th instalment in the "The Isle of Wight Killings" series. I enjoyed this book it’s a slow burn, entertaining mystery. . Once again, Susan finds herself piecing together clues in her search for the truth. Can she untangle the lies before someone else dies?
The mystery is expertly crafted, with just the right number of suspects to keep you guessing. The twists and turns are plentiful, and I didn't see the culprit coming.
Susan is a relatable protagonist who's had to start over after her husband left her. She's built a new life, made friends, and discovered a talent for solving mysteries. Her character growth in this story is compelling, and I appreciate that she's not static – she's complex and multi-dimensional.
I am sad that there won’t be anymore in the series, but look forward to Mary’s next book.
4.5 star rating
I requested and received an advanced readers copy from Boldwood Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.
I absolutely love this series following Susan and her amateur sleuthing on the Isle of Wight. As a fellow Islander, visualising all the places mentioned makes it more interesting and due to the believable nature of the characters, I half expect to meet Susan and her dogs somewhere in the south or West Wight. This latest story follows first a break-in at the local vets, swiftly followed by the murder of the vet himself. As with all of Mary Grand’s mysteries there are so many possible culprits and explanations, it is virtually impossible to discover the truth before the end. A great story with many secrets being gradually revealed that finally uncover the perpetrator. Susan’s friend Robert and ex husband Steve also feature and I was quite exasperated by Susan’s tolerance at certain arrogant behaviour. I look forward to reading more from this talented author who brings the Island to life with beautiful images of the wonderful scenery and lifestyle. Thankfully the number of murders she writes about are purely fiction.
It was good to be back on the Isle of Wight with Susan - the amateur sleuth – and her family and friends. This is one of a series but can easily be read as a standalone.
Following her divorce from Steve a few years ago and an upsetting murder near her old home, Susan moved to the village of Bishopstone. Her daughter, Zoe, lives on the mainland with her wife and little girl.
Susan’s new next-door neighbour, Becca, works at the local vet surgery which is franchised by husband-and-wife team Peter and Eliza. The surgery is broken into one night and although Susan tries not to get involved, her nose for crime is on high alert. Soon after, Peter goes missing and everyone who knows him is concerned, but then his body is found. Every member of the friendship group that Susan belongs to is a potential suspect and she just can’t help getting involved in solving the crime.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
There is just something so comforting about this series. Yes, it revolves around murder… but somehow it remains one of the most wholesome, cozy reading experiences I’ve found. This installment was another delightful whodunit, clever enough to keep me guessing, but never dark or heavy. The mystery unfolds at a steady, satisfying pace, with just the right number of twists to make you second-guess everyone without feeling overwhelmed. What I love most, though, is the heart of these books. Susan feels like an old friend at this point. She's kind, layered, and easy to root for. I’m far more invested in her life than I ever expected to be in a series about murder. If you’re looking for a mystery without swearing, gore, graphic content, or anything gratuitous, just a genuinely fun, clean, cozy whodunit, this series is such a gem. Already looking forward to the next one.
Great book in the series but also great as a stand-alone too. This series is witty, fast paced, fun and has great strong females and friendships too. Susan is now an old hand at helping solve cases. This time she has been welcomed to help by the police as long as she stays out of the way! Her and her dogs sniff out facts that the police don’t see and she slips into events quite unnoticed. This time her and Roberts friendship has petered out due to her ex Stephen coming to stay which has strained the burgeoning relationship and makes Susan unhappier than she realised. This caper set on the Isle of Wight is set around a vet practice and the staff and owners. It’s a great book, very enjoyable and an easy read. Thank you NetGalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
I am so enjoying this series. This books as the others, takes place onthe Isle of Wight with Susan and her two dogs, Rocco and Libs. This series often has me screaming at Susan because she can, at times, be really daft. Yet we all know someone like this, and by the end of the book, Susan has usually got it all righted. It just adds to the charm of the series. In this book, we have Steven, Susan's ex, coming back into the picture. At first, this made me upset because I thought Susan had gotten him out of her system, so to speak. But as I said earlier, Susan sometimes is a little daft. I enjoyed trying to decide who the killer was, and Mary Grand did a good job of keeping me guessing. Can't wait for the next in this fun series. Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC.
I enjoyed reading about Susan and seeing her work her way through the information and facts she found out during her investigation. Lots of intrigue and mystery which kept me guessing right to the end.
A fab cosy crime book, and I'm looking forward to going back and reading the 4 books which came before this one.
I received a gifted ARC of this book. Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood This is my honest review
This was my first Mary Grand novel, and it definitely won't be my last. This is the perfect read when you're wanting a gentle country mystery with lots of clues and potential suspects to keep you guessing. It also doesn't hurt that the story is focused on and around a rural vet practice.
Lovely, slow unravelling of clues and motives, with a gentle touch of second chance romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
