Welcome to Faerûn, a land of amazing magic, terrifying monsters, ancient ruins, and hidden wonders. The world has changed since the Spellplague, and from this arcane crucible have emerged shining kingdoms, tyrannical empires, mighty heroes, and monster-infested dungeons. The Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide presents a world of untold adventure; a land of a thousand stories shaped by the deeds of adventurers the likes of which Faerûn has never seen before.
This book includes everything a Dungeon Master needs to run a D&D campaign in the Forgotten Realms setting, as well as elements that DMs can incorporate into their own D&D campaigns. The book provides background information on the lands of Faerûn, a fully detailed town in which to start a campaign, adventure seeds, new monsters, ready-to-play non-player characters, and a full-color poster map of Faerûn.
Wizards of the Coast LLC (often referred to as WotC /ˈwɒtˌsiː/ or simply Wizards) is an American publisher of games, primarily based on fantasy and science fiction themes, and formerly an operator of retail stores for games. Originally a basement-run role-playing game publisher, the company popularized the collectible card game genre with Magic: The Gathering in the mid-1990s, acquired the popular Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game by purchasing the failing company TSR, and experienced tremendous success by publishing the licensed Pokémon Trading Card Game. The company's corporate headquarters are located in Renton, Washington in the United States.[1]
Wizards of the Coast publishes role-playing games, board games, and collectible card games. They have received numerous awards, including several Origins Awards. The company has been a subsidiary of Hasbro since 1999. All Wizards of the Coast stores were closed in 2004.
Not a bad book with some creative ideas. It updates the Forgotten Realms to fit in with the 4th edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and it succeeds admirably. My main problem with the book is twofold:
1) It seems to me that the purpose of 4th edition D&D is to bring in new players into the game, yet the Campaign Guide seems to simply be an update to the Forgotten Realms for people already familiar with the Realms rather than being a book for people who might not be familiar with them. I have read the past editions of the FR, but haven't run in them since 3ed edition came out, so I am not really familiar with them. So, through much of the book, i was let scratching my head at some of the narrative.
2) The maps of the individual countries are simply blown up portions of the big map in the book and the are not complete. The individual country sections talk about locations that are not shown on the map (and not just mysterious areas whose location is not exactly known - whole cities are missing from the maps. In the Dalelands, for example, the High Dale and Tarkhaldale are not on the map).
Overall, they did a good job updating the Realms to the new edition, but the writers were lazy on some key points.
