Carolyn Davidson

Carolyn Davidson began writing in 1986, knowing absolutely nothing about the craft. Her first three books were rejected by Harlequin.

She met Dixie Browning at a Harlequin dinner in Charleston, South Carolina, and told Dixie she was writing, but that she feared she was too old to begin such an undertaking. Dixie's response spurred Carolyn to pursue her dream. Dixie said, in her own inimitable fashion, "Well, honey, you can't start any younger!" And she was right.

Having spent her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, and working woman, she's privileged to have a career that makes her dreams possible. Writing historical romance gives her the opportunity to travel, to visit all those places where our forefathers staked their claim on this country of ours. And then she goes home and writes their stories, maybe not exactly as they lived them, but as her imagination portrays them.

Carolyn lives in the South, where romance thrives, and where the sun shines almost every day of the year. In fact, some days it is difficult to stay glued to her computer, especially when the birds are singing and the flowers are in full bloom.

She lives not far from the ocean, close to Charleston, South Carolina, one of the most romantic cities in the world. Moreover, time at the beach is easy to come by. Does she enjoy her life? You bet! Harlequin allows her to write the books she loves, and her editor is patient with her quirks and foibles. Her family, though scattered in various states, is supportive, and her husband is a constant source of inspiration.

1863 - Kent Corners, Oklahoma - Being pregnant and not by her fiancée Connor Webster but by his own brother James, Loris Peterson found herself put out by her parents on a cold January night. Finding the only shelter she could, Loris became a squatter in an abandoned home on the outskirts of town. Knowing the man that she loved would never forgive her for betraying him, she started to make plans for her and her child’s future. Feeling that he was to tough on Loris, Connor went to her home to check on her only to be told she had been thrown out the night before. Following the tracks with worry for the women that had betrayed him, Connor knew he would help her anyway he could especially since her own parents wouldn’t be there for her. Finding the love still grew between them, Connor made the decision to forgive without knowing the consequences that decision would cause. Making a life together, learning to love the child she carried and all sorts of calamities befall the couple threatening not only their happiness but their lives.

This Harlequin Historical - Western series fit’s the basic mold. I typically don’t like pre-existing relationships, but this is about redemption, forgiveness and learning to love each other again. I have read several of Carolyn Davidson books and basically like her stories, this one fits in with her style. I enjoyed the story and each of the characters but I had a difficult time connecting to some of them. Still, an enjoyable time spent with an easy read.

I enjoyed the book. It wasn’t great, but it was good. It was not as slow as the last book I read by the author, which I think was titled night song. This book was a little slow at the end too much detail not a fast enough wrap-up of the storyline. this book was shorter than the previous book I read I think that helped a lot because it cut down on the extra details that were not necessary. There were a lot of similarities between the books in the details of the lives, they lived in that time period. Which is to be expected but maybe too many similarities in the descriptions to read the books back to back.

Plenty of love, passion, and suspense in this historical romance! Sadness too, but it has a happy ending.

This book makes light of cheating. Loris has no shame, and Connor is seriously lacking in self-respect.
