My Book Escape: Chapters of a Chicana

My Book Chapters of a Chicana tells the powerful story of being a first-generation Latina in Houston, following the trials and tribulations of Betty Feregrino, a woman whose beginning is similar to many.

A memoir that pays homage to the migration of parents who fled El Salvador and Mexico before settling in Houston, Texas. An emotional and raw story of childhood trauma, from witnessing domestic violence to the loss of a parent to cancer during formative teenage years. Facing higher educational hardships, she still prevailed to become the successful woman she is today. Betty shared the reality of experiencing prejudice, on different levels, in one's community. Exploring the realistic complexities of parental relationships from childhood.

A story with an inspiring call for all those facing similar battles to reshape the stereotypes imposed by a harsh society. This tale invites readers to hold a mirror up to their own lives, offering glimpses of shared experiences while encouraging them to break generational cycles.

A true story of survival, coming of age, resilience and healing. This memoir was definitely tough to read and learn of all that Betty endured and witnessed throughout her childhood, but it was definitely worth it to finish. From in the womb (literally) to where she is today, was an emotional rollercoaster just to read about. I imagined being in those shoes and my heart broke and then healed along with her in the end. Reading someone’s personal traumas and stories of how they got to where they are truly makes you see life differently every time. To be able to lay all of this out in written form is so brave. I was truly honored to get a gifted copy from the author herself. I highly recommend to grab yourself a copy. Check trigger warnings.

My Book Escape: Chapters of a Chicana by Betty Feregrino immediately drew me in because of Betty’s bright, authentic personality. I wanted to understand how she grew up and the experiences that shaped her into who she is today. The memoir is raw and emotional, tackling difficult topics with honesty while still feeling accessible and inspiring rather than overwhelming.

This book is for readers who are drawn to stories about resilience and breaking generational curses. Although memoirs are outside of my usual reading genre, this book opened the door for me to explore more stories centered on strength, healing, and personal growth.

This book was so beautiful. I felt as though I could relate to certain moments that the author experienced in her overall life. Additionally, I believe this memoir would be perfect for individuals that want to one day work with low-income students, so that they are aware of the struggles our scholars deal with each day. The writing is beautiful and her story left me speechless. I enjoyed this novel! It was worth the money spent. I'll remember this story! It definitely left an impression on me.
