Darcy D’Angelo is an average girl. Men like Aaro don’t fall for girls like her. He’s heroic, gorgeous, intelligent, and she’s…not. Yet, after only a brief acquaintance, he reveals his intention to marry her. Aaro Highlander, like his “brothers,” is a special breed—not quite angel, not quite human—with spectacular gifts, deep running passions and strength of character that drives him to do the right thing. But something has been missing from his life, until now. He’s found his mate, but his commitment to Jett and Sebastian may put wedding plans on hold as they discover prophetic secrets and hunt for a serial killer.

I want to give this one six stars, not five. That’s how much I enjoyed reading it. Descended Aaro is book three in the series by Dana Pratola and I must say the entire series is growing on me more and more. In fact, after reading ‘Aaro’ I had to go back and re-read the first two books – ‘Jett’ and ‘Sebastian’. Having done so, I’d officially call myself a fan and can’t wait for the fourth (and presumably the last) book. Aaro is probably the most likeable ‘superhero’ in the series so far. He and the others are part of an angelic race (but they are NOT angels they are quick to point out) whose purpose is to help humans in need, especially victims of sexual abuse. The series has its premise in the paranormal, there is plenty of action and intrigue as the ‘brothers’ carry out their vigilantism, and there is a very strong evangelistic element, but make no mistake that romance rules. The ‘descended’ are destined to only one mate and in this book Aaro meets his while finding a serial killer on the loose and teaming up with the others to rid the world of yet another psycho. These are deliciously steamy stories, somewhat edgy for Christian fiction with a mild language warning, but still tasteful in my view. If you haven’t read the whole series I would recommend starting with Book one and so on.
The Descended series keeps getting better and better. Aaro's story was better than Jett and Sebastian's story. I just adored Darcy, I loved her innocence. Ms. Pratola, I can't wait to read book 4 to discover who the fourth brother is. I hope Jett, Sebastian nor Aaro will be ones whose loyalty is divided; I think that should fall to the fourth. I get the feeling that the fourth brother already knows about them and just hasn't revealed himself. I love all the main characters especially Haven and Darcy.
Book one, Jett, clearly five stars. What would you do if you were a young artist and a famous billionaire personally called you and invited you to his house for a proposition? Haven is more than flabbergasted, especially over the elusive man’s presumptuous nature. As a bold young woman, Haven is more than confident with her skills as an artist. But when Jett doesn’t give the curtesy of making an appearance, speaking to Haven through speakers and spying on her from cameras, Haven bristles and her personality clashes with the overly cocky man.
Sparks of contention fly. Every word they exchange is riddled with meaning and goading, emotion and intimacy. You could say Haven and Jett have effectively dug themselves under each other’s skin.
As the reader, I was so drawn in by how one character was so acutely aware of the other and how Haven had such an effect on Jett. Every time we dipped into Jett’s thoughts from his POV we saw deeper into his mind and soul. Right from the beginning, he couldn’t get Haven out of his mind. What it comes down to, he wants her, so much so, that he begins revealing glimpses of himself to her, against his better judgement. Haven learns more and more just how twisted Jett’s past really is.
But she can’t help herself either. She is drawn to him. And his supernatural abilities. But Jett believes they make him a monster. Here in lies the Beauty and the Beast vibe.
As seductive as the author paints the words to this novel, it’s a clean read. I’d rate it PG-13. Mild swear words. Jett makes several references to how much he desires and wants Haven. So much so that the average Christian reader will be hanging on to—I mean swooning—with every word. Jett is dark. Like Heathcliff or Mr. Rochester. Haven is pure and innocent. She believes in God. Jett does not. Rest assured, they delve into delicious kissing, but it doesn’t go beyond that.
The novel is intense, gripping. Devourable. I must say that I read this with ferocious hunger.
Readers who loved the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi will enjoy this read.
Book two, Sebastian, three stars. This novel almost made me put the series down, but because I purchased the box set, I endeavored to finish it. But book two took me weeks.
A vast amount of the novel talked about the characters coming to know God. It even included sermons and prayer. Those parts grew very lengthy and were hashed back and forth several times as the two main character’s lamented their faith. And while there was talk of faith in the first novel, it happened at the end and was part of the character’s growth, which made it believable. But in this second novel, the character’s debates about faith felt forced and not at all enjoyable to read.
The most confusing parts—these novels are sensuous. The characters aren’t afraid of passionate kisses and touches and expressing how they feel during such encounters. The reason this was confusing was because one second the novels are teetering on the edge of erotica and the next second the characters are vowing to be chaste and spouting scripture. I had whiplash.
It was a relief when I finished the second book. I didn’t like the characters either.
Book three, Aaro, five stars again! I tore through this book. I loved the characters. There wasn’t loads of faith talk. And the book was hot, and it brought in the other characters. The plot was solid as the characters hunted for a serial killer. I really enjoyed seeing the powers of the three Descended and how the characters all worked together.
Book four, Ulrich, four stars This feels too much like the other novels. All about finding his mate. While I enjoyed the characters in the other novels looking for their mates, much like the other novels, this one had too much talking and not enough action. And by this time the same storyline became old.
The concept of finding his girl in his dreams was fun, but the novel was spent trying to convince a girl to fall in love with him and not be scared of him.
And again, the main guy, Ulrich seemed so focused on sex. Sex seems to be the driving force in these novels. The novel is way too sensual, but the characters never have sex, actually, unless it’s in a dream, but even then, it’s not described. But there are plenty of sensual descriptions of how she makes him feel.
Mostly, I really wanted the characters to stop talking and do something. Anything, even if it was sex. But a bit of action could have been good too. The plot lines in these novels fall by the wayside. They are minor, but thankfully for them or else the novels wouldn’t have much grit.
Bottom line. This novel sends mixed signals, pushing the agenda of being saved, but it leads the reader to believe that fooling around and thinking sensuous thoughts is okay as long as you are saved. Not something I’d want a teenager reading and adopting as a mindset.
My absolute favorite character was Aaro, followed by Jett. But all the men had such different personalities. That made the novels fun. All the women felt too similar for my taste.
Reader Rated for ages 17+ for detailed fade out sensuality; also contains mild violence and language.
After Jett and Sebastian, I didn’t think Aaro’s special talents could surprise me – but I was wrong! Aaro is sensible and kind and of course, equally as handsome and hunky as the other two. His story gives us a little more insight into the reason why these men were born with such unusual gifts, and what they are meant to do with them. We are given a glimpse of what is to come once the fourth member of their team arrives in the next book. Darcy is a sweet young woman who is a little too trusting. Aaro arrives in her world just in time! It's obvious from the start that they are a perfect match! Can’t wait to read Ulrick, though I am sad that it is the final book in the series.
I've been anxiously awaiting this latest release in the Descended series by Dana Pratola and, as always with Ms. Pratola's books, I devoured it in almost one sitting. She gives us such an interesting take on romance with a supernatural edge that it feels like truth and reality but with such unpredictable and edgy characters. I appreciate that there is always an underlying mission of rescuing the broken along with great romantic tension. There were new revelations in this third book of the series and a slight shift in the storyline. I'll be anxious once again as I wait for the next "brother" to be revealed in the Descended series.
Love, love, love Jett (hero in book 1) and Sebastian (hero in book 2) and the way they bicker with each other. Jett and his straight forward, no nonsense attitude, as well as his love for Haven is my favorite part of the series.
Aaro, hero of this book, was a fun addition, but not as much fun as Jett and Sebastian.
Darcy was a little too --- something. I could not get a good feel for her. Her character - personality - changed throughout the book. She went from insecure to sex kitten.
Book 3 was more edgy Christian fiction - in my opinion - than prior books. To quote the book, "This isn't your mother's Christian fiction."
I hate to take off a star only because I didn't like how the author left the series, but in reality, it is quite unfinished. Throughout this final book, she speaks of finding the fourth member of the group, and how one of the members will have his loyalty tested severely. This is even repeated in the final page, but then the book ends, and there is no further book in the series. I loved this story line and the incredible depth of the characters and how they follow through so seamlessly from one book to the next. She just needs one more book to finalize all the foreshadowing she did in the third book. Ah well....
Real people...well, sort of...real struggles, real desires. Dana Pratola has done it again! Another book I could hardly put down. Another gripping, romantic, edge of your seat story. After reading this third book in the series, I want to do something! I don't want to sit idly by or ignore that this is real! Praying Papa God will show me how to help! I can't wait for the fourth book of the series! I highly recommend the first three!
Loved this book, enjoyed the story line with Aaro and his gifts and how he's different from Jett and Sebastian. Also liked the fact that like with Sebastian, some of the same characters from Jett continued in this book as well. Very suspenseful too - kept you on the edge of your seat at the end. Hoping there will be another book in this series! Great job Dana!
I've enjoyed each of the first three books in the Descended series. Dana Pratola adds humor and enough normalcy to the story to make even the extraordinary believable.
Aaro and Darcy are likable, and their whirlwind romance comes with a heavy dose of sensuality (but is not explicit).
I'm looking forward to the final book and the fulfillment of the prophecy alluded to Book 3.
