Possessive Enemy

Rate this book
From USA Today & Wall Street Journal bestselling author Michelle Heard comes a new STANDALONE, full-length MAFIA ROMANCE novel.
My father orders me to seduce a man most people are too afraid to even look at.
Georgi Torrisi.
Head of the Torrisi family and a Cosa Nostra Capo.
A brutal and powerful man who rules his world with violence and absolute control.

And I’m supposed to make him want me.

Turns out my father thinks he can use Georgi to get to Atanas Petkov, our family’s sworn enemy. If Atanas continues to grow in power with Georgi’s help, it will mean the end of my father’s reign of terror, and I’m the bait meant to make one of the most dangerous men in New York lower his guard.

Do I have a choice?
No.

Hours later, Georgi Torrisi is chained in my father’s basement while the man I helped betray is beaten and tortured.
My already messed-up life takes a turn for the worse because I didn’t expect the guilt.
I didn’t expect the way his eyes still burn when he looks at me.

And I definitely didn’t expect myself to unlock the chains and set him free.

The moment Georgi walks out of that basement, he turns into a violent monster that’s out for revenge. Once the hallways of my family home are painted red, he takes my daughter and me with him.

There’s no running.
No hiding.

And now all I can do is pray I survive being at the mercy of the man I betrayed.

OMG. Please check the trigger warnings before reading this. 💔

💔 Graphic rape scene
💔 Graphic violence
💔 Torture

I enjoyed the simplicity of Vicious Devil, so this was me going into the book thinking we were about to have a good little hehe-haha time.

And this was me by the time I reached that chapter.

It really had me like did I consent to this?

This book is dark and quite heavy. For me, it was a little difficult to read. The stark difference between how it starts and where the story eventually goes felt like whiplash.

It begins with Georgi visiting Bulgaria. The Bulgarian mafia learns of his presence on their territory and sets out to capture him. They send Nina as bait to tempt him into a trap. Georgi is captured and tortured, and Nina is tasked with caring for him.

At first, I thought it was karmic justice. Georgi is a notorious playboy, so there was something fitting about a woman being his downfall. But the more I read, the more somber the story became, and the faster my laughter died 💀

Nina is just as much a prisoner in her father's house as Georgi is. Her daughter is used as leverage to keep her obedient and doing her father’s bidding. She is used, abused, and Georgi witnesses it. They become each other's source of comfort, which leads to them forming a bond born from shared trauma. This isn’t enemy to lovers as it’s so strangely tagged. Georgi and Nina never actually hate each other. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Georgi quickly understands why she did what she did.

When he finally escapes, he takes Nina and her daughter, Simi, with him. And so begins their journey toward healing.

My heart broke for Nina, for everything she was forced to endure and everything she had to do to keep her daughter safe. I wanted so badly for her to find peace, happiness, and some version of herself that existed before those monsters took everything from her. Whoever that person was, because by the time we meet Nina, she is already so broken.

Georgi is everything. The way he immediately stepped up. The way he loved and cared for Simi as if she were his own. I was completely gone for this man. Even though Nina struggles to trust him, Georgi remains patient, kind, and supportive. This isn't a steamy or sexy romance. It's a story about healing through love, care, and safety. The slow burn felt exactly right for these characters. And I mean slow burn in the sense that they're not lusting after each other and jumping into bed with all their unresolved hurt. “The I love yous” felt like they came out of nowhere because the romance isn’t very emphatic. However, as far as stories like this go, it’s one of the better ones I’ve read.

I love the way they take care of each other and pour into one another. Sometimes it felt as though their acts of care mirrored each other. While Georgi was being held captive, Nina kneeled on the concrete floor for hours, holding him so he could get some sleep. Later, after their escape, whenever Nina is terrified and overwhelmed, Georgi soothes her by stroking her and reassuring her that she is safe.

I want more of this type of romance, where the love isn't just spoken but shown through patience, tenderness, and the choice to keep showing up for someone when they're at their lowest. I'm learning fast that found family is one of the things Heard does best and I'm here for it.

I still don’t know how I feel about the violence at the end. It was cathartic, but I’m still recoiling at the thought of it.

Fiona, I call dibs on Georgi, you can keep Ashland, please and thank you. Mwah 😘

❝ Who needs sleep when you’ve been kissed by the most beautiful woman in the world?’’

‘’Thank you for caring. It’s been so long, I have forgotten how good it feels.”

“You are not some woman to me,” he says, and taking hold of my chin, he forces my head back so I’ll look at him. “You are the woman. Simi isn’t some child I’ll get tired of. I know what I’m in for, Nina. I’ve been in Simi’s shoes, and I would never promise her the world only to rip it away from her.”

‘’You’re the angel, Georgi.”

‘’I want everything from you, Nina. When you’re ready.”

”What’s your favorite thing to do?”
“Spending time with Simi.”
“I love her.” His smile widens. “You have the most amazing daughter, angelche moe ❞

If Michelle Heard keeps writing caretaker mafia heroes, I'm going to become unbearably predictable.

I came for the revenge plot.

I stayed for Georgi Torrisi feeding people, adopting a tiny princess and making me emotional over basic acts of care.

What Worked For Me
(aka: why I spent most of this book clutching my chest)

The Georgi Torrisi Rehabilitation Program

I've read plenty of possessive mafia heroes, obsessive heroes and "you're mine" heroes but Georgi stands out because beneath all the possessiveness, violence and protective instincts is a genuinely nurturing man.

This is a hero who notices panic attacks, makes sure the heroine eats, offers constant reassurance and understands that Nina's healing is more important than his own desires. Time and time again, he chooses her comfort, safety, and recovery over immediate gratification.

The possessiveness was there. The obsession was there. But what really sold me was the care.

Nina, Simi and the Healing Journey

Nina's healing journey was the heart of this book. Watching her slowly learn what safety, kindness and stability look like after years of abuse was incredibly rewarding and I appreciated that her trauma wasn't treated as something that disappeared overnight.

Then there's Simi.

The moment she decided Georgi was her prince, I was completely sold. Watching him fall in love with both mother and daughter while Simi steadily adopted him was pure emotional catnip for me.

The Darkness Had A Purpose

This is not a light mafia romance.

Nina's backstory is brutal and there are scenes throughout the book that are genuinely difficult to read. Michelle Heard doesn't shy away from showing the lasting impact of abuse, trauma and control, and there were moments that left me heartbroken for Nina.

What worked for me was that the darkness never felt unnecessary. The story doesn't dwell in suffering for the sake of suffering. Instead, it uses those experiences to build Nina's healing journey, making every step toward safety, trust and happiness feel meaningful and earned.

The darker content won't be for everyone but for me, it made the emotional payoff hit even harder.

Found Family Supremacy

The romance gave me butterflies. The found family gave me feelings.

The Torrisi family immediately became one of my favourite parts of the story. Every interaction reinforced the feeling that Nina and Simi weren't just being protected - they were being welcomed.

By the time we reached the family barbecue, I was fully invested in seeing this family get their happily ever after.

The Find Out Phase: Serving Female Rage

After spending the first quarter of the book watching Nina survive, I was relieved she wasn't denied her anger.

The revenge felt earned and I appreciated that it happened on-page rather than being brushed aside or summarised after the fact. Nina was given the opportunity to reclaim her power in a way that felt meaningful to her character and I thoroughly enjoyed the creative psychological warfare she unleashed along the way.

What I appreciated most though, was that the revenge wasn't treated as the cure. Nina's healing had already begun long before she confronted her abusers. The revenge simply gave her the chance to close the door on that chapter of her life and finally move forward.

Where It Lost Me
(aka: logic briefly entered the chat)

The World Shrinks Around The Main Characters

Once Georgi, Nina and Simi settle into their new dynamic, the story becomes almost entirely about them.

I was emotionally invested enough that this wasn't a major issue but there were times when the supporting storylines felt more like a backdrop for the relationship than fully developed threads in their own right.

Fortunately, the central trio was strong enough to carry the book.

The Timeline Requires Blind Faith

The romance moves fast.

Very fast.

Objectively, there are moments where I looked at the timeline and thought: "...already?"

The relationship worked emotionally for me because the book spent so much time building trust, safety, caretaking and family bonds.

But if you're someone who struggles with accelerated emotional progression, your mileage may vary.

My Brain Had Questions

There were definitely moments where my logical side wanted to tap me on the shoulder and ask for clarification.

The timeline is accelerated, certain details feel a little hand-waved and some developments require a healthy amount of suspension of disbelief.

Ordinarily, those things would bother me more. But every time I started questioning something, Georgi would do something ridiculously thoughtful, Simi would say something adorable or Nina's healing journey would tug on my heartstrings and suddenly I didn't care nearly as much as I should have.

Final Thoughts

This book's greatest strength was knowing exactly what story it wanted to tell. Not mafia politics. Not revenge.

At its heart, it's about a broken woman, her daughter and the man who becomes their safe place.

The emotional payoff carried me from beginning to end. I laughed, swooned, melted repeatedly and became far too invested in domestic moments.

Was it flawless? Not even close.

Did I eat it up? No crunbs left.

Final Verdict

4.25 ⭐️ - The mafia boss kidnapped the heroine. Then he adopted her daughter, healed her trauma and hijacked the entire book with feelings. Consider me successfully manipulated.

Simi was right all along. The prince was real. He just answered to Georgi.

Tropes and Vibes:
• Possessive mafia hero
• Caretaker MMC supremacy
• Traumatised heroine healing arc
• Single mother FMC
• Protective hero x vulnerable heroine
• Found family
• Touch her and die / Possessive MMC
• "Did you eat?" as a love language
• Emotional support mafia boss
• Tiny princess steals the show
• Mutual caretaking
• Revenge & female rage payoff
• Safe place romance
• Family-building before forever
• Obsessive but nurturing hero
• Domestic moments that hit harder than action scenes
• He falls first / He falls harder
• Castle, prince, princess energy

**Thanks for the spontaneous buddy read, Minne 💕 After Frozen Heart, this was exactly what I needed. Georgi, Simi, found family, and feelings healed wounds I didn't know I had. 10/10 recovery plan pookie!

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Pre-read:
She betrayed him. He kidnapped her.
Goodreads says this counts as a meet cute.

**BR with Minne because apparently peace was never an option.

First time giving 1 star to Michelle. I get that he’s a playboy, but it didn’t add anything to the story. Was it really necessary to be reminded of it almost every chapter?

Every time he told someone he had settled down with the heroine, people were surprised and made comments like, “You won’t be able to fuck around like you used to.” And the H “Aren’t you happy. I’ll leave your strippers alone,” I joke” 🙄🙄

And every time they did something sexual, he thought about his past. At 92%: “I’ve had women deep-throat me before, but this… fuck, this is what truly does it for me.” We get it.

The story is very triggering. The heroine is raped on page, and the hero is forced to watch. She has never had consensual sex—only assault.

Manwhore H, usually I’m like whatever about this but holy shit the author did not want us to forget that he has been with a lot of women. I do appreciate that there was no on page scenes w OW or any OW showing up.(shared highlights of his past mentioned) first kiss was with h

h had 9 years of being raped by the same person, and never was with anyone with her consent before or during the 9 years.

Fmc sexual experience: never had consensual sex, r*ped by om on page

?????????????????

Who even is the target audience for this?
It's getting hard to find romance books where the authors don't seem to hate women.

Okay this one hit hard and was such a good read!!
Way better then the last book.

Nina is prisoner in her own home with a family (father) who doesn't love her and makes her a pawn in his plans he uses Nina Daughter Simi to punish her. Nina has been beaten, raped verbally abused. Girl just trying to live her next duty is to get Georgi and she does because he's a player it works and he's kidnapped. Tortured and Nina has to clean jim up, bandage him make sure he doesn't die and at first Geo is annoyed but curious about Nina. Until he learns more she's a victim in this to.

Worst thing he went through wasn't the torture was watching a man Rape Nina right infront of him and he couldn't do anything. (Its on page to) so yeah it was alot. And it sorta bonded them and made Nina set him free.

Now Geo takes them and she and her daughter are his. She doesn't trust him and she shouldn't all men in her life have lied and abused her. So i got it. The relationship is slowish I love geo and simi bond. She was so trusting and knew Geo would never hurt her. 😭😭😭

It wraps up the killing of the bad guys pretty fast and Nina does get a piece of it.

Angst, om drama/no ow, no cheating, secondary characters, Drama, sexy times, no virgins

Like most of Michelle Heard’s MMCs, I didn’t like Georgi.

The guy describes himself as a control freak, but clearly not when it comes to his 🍆. He controls his sister’s love life while sleeping his way through the entire female population… wonderful!

Equality between men and women is not his forte.

He also calls himself “the king of one-night stands.” Be still my heart in the face of such intensity 😒
I’m sorry, but this is the kind of cliché I just can’t deal with anymore. I’ve read it everywhere, in almost every mafia book.
At one point, I was actually glad he got kidnapped and tortured because he couldn’t keep his 🍆 in check.
But hey he never kissed his “conquests”!!

Nina, like many recent FMCs, has been through hell and back. I didn’t mind that, but definitely check the TWs beforehand.
The whole kidnapping and torture arc happens within the first 30% of the book, and the remaining 70% is just Nina and Georgi trying to tame each other. Or more Georgi trying to get into Nina’s pants.

Things I didn’t like:
As a rule, I don’t enjoy kids in books. They always speak in overly cute, oddly wise ways. The book is short, yet we still lose a fair amount of time on Simi doing very little.
Him calling Nina “little mouse”, is that supposed to be cute??
Nina being attracted to him when all she’s known from men is violence. It just didn’t make sense.
Nina being strong at first, then turning into a woman scared of her own shadow, hiding behind Georgi whenever someone raises their voice and having panic attacks over panic attacks.

Tropes:
✅ Single mum / mafia capo
✅ Manwhore / “only been 🍇”
✅ Age gap
✅ Size difference
🌶️

TW:
SA (on page)
Kidnapping & torture
Child abuse
Mention of miscarriage

I could have given it an extra point because the book did keep me entertained, but I have now standards, even for my fictional men.

She suffered a lot and is a strong woman and a loving mother. For me she was not that relatable sadly and sometimes she acted pretty childish.

Another manwhore who doesn‘t shut up about his other women in the past. I liked him but not that much to be honest. He treated Nina trauma not how I wish he had, the women needed therapy and not a boyfriend.

Normally I adore the books by Michelle Heard because she‘s one of my alltime fav mafia romance authors, but this one wasn‘t my cup of tea. First I was curious and had high hopes but the story couldn‘t hold up my attention for long. This felt like trauma dumping and was a very dark/triggering book. Nina suffered too much and I don‘t like this dynamic were the woman is traumatised and weak and the man is her hero she falls in love with. Girl, you need therapy and regain strength and not a relationship with a toxic mafia dude. Because that‘s what Georgi was: he didn‘t shut up about Nina being „his“ and starts controlling her because he wants to „protect“ her. Normally I like the morally dark men but when a women is deeply traumatised she doesn‘t need a man like this! The whole couple felt off for me and I didn‘t enjoyed it. It was cringe more often than not and I forced myself to push through.

This book landed on my kindle yesterday morning and I couldn’t put it down till I finished. This is the the third book in the second generation of the Kings of the Mafia series and this follows Georgi (son of Skyler and Renzo - Hunted by a shadow) and Nina.

Our FMC Nina has not lived an easy life under the thumb of her father and bless my heart all I wanted to do was jump between the pages and hug her myself😭. The things she experienced I would wish upon no one, Nina was only left have 2 hours a day with her daughter, and honestly I have no words to describe that household because this was a method of control. So her father must remain happy so that she gets to spend time with her little girl Simi and that she will be safe.

When Nina is tasked to lure in Georgi she follows orders with out question because she has to. While Georgi is in the Pavlov household Nina is tasked with taking care of him after each questioning session. It is these moments that Georgi and Nina start to connect, he understands that Nina has absolutely no choice and when he witnesses something very traumatic happening to Nina by another man (chapter 8 for reference) this is where he reaches his breaking point and vows when (not if) he gets free he will protect Nina and her daughter and take her away from this place.

Nina who has had enough decides to release Georgi and allows him to escape and when he takes down the household he takes Nina and Simi with him to give them a better life. Of course Nina is hesitant she is going from one mafia family to another and she doesn’t believe that she won’t be tricked and separated from her daughter again.

Even while he is injured Georgi does everything and I mean everything in his power to reassure Nina. He was patient, respectful and the moments with Nina’s daughter they were absolutely adorable. Nina’s daughter believed that a prince would come to save them and Georgi took on this role immediately and vowed to protect them in his castle. He wanted to spoil them and give his girls (yes his girls😭) a better life. His sister Raya also immediately embodied the role of being an aunt.

Was there chemistry there? Absolutely but before anything even romantic came into play trust and friendship was built. He stepped into the role as a doting father immediately which was adorable 😭Georgi knew that Nina had to heal and he wanted to be alongside her for that journey, he would wait as long as she was ready whether that be days, months or years there was no time limit.

Georgi also vows that he will get Nina her revenge on those who have wronged her in the past and I was so happy she got that because she was absolutely ruthless👏🏼

Overall I loved this book. This couples journey is not easy but they get their HEA in the end🧡

I cannot wait to dive back into this universe for the next couple very soon. Thank you to Candi PR who provided this e-arc for my honest thoughts 💭

I have read a lot of Michelle Heard’s books but I can honestly say, this was both heart wrenching and tragic.

𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞/𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬:
🔥Single Mother
🔥He kidnaps them both
🔥Enemies To Lovers
🔥He takes revenge for her
🔥He's held captive - She has to keep him alive
🔥He doesn't have to ask, '𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐓𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮,' because he was forced to witness it

Nina is a single mother who endures unimaginable suffering. My God! Everything she had to go through…all the suffering she had to endure. Reading her part of the story made me cry a time or two and I was wishing for her and daughter’s happiness. I found myself so protective of her and I am honestly so proud of her! Michelle Heard wrote this character so well that I know her story will linger in my memory for a long time.
Georgi… so patient and understanding. He strikes a perfect balance between kindness and a fierce protectiveness for those he loves.. I love him more for how utterly devoted, protective and obsessed he was with Nina and her daughter!
Nina and Georgi were the perfect match! I loved their chemistry! It just clicked.
Everything about 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐲 was addictive and a page turner. I loved every moment of it!

3/5 ⭐️

Nina x Georgi🤍

📚 Captive
📚 Single mom ( 4 year old daughter)
📚 Check TW !! On page rape !
📚 Manwhore
📚 Insta Love
🚩 no cheating or sharing, no OW

OM - the father of her daughter has been raping her for 9 years...

This book was so good but tbh the whole he is a manwhore but didn't kiss anybody pissed me off so badly 🤮 If it weren't for that trope I would have rated it higher

Review of advance copy received from Candi kane.

I really enjoyed this book it was such a quick and enjoyable read!

I felt so empathetic towards her especially considering everything she went through because of her dad he’s truly the worst. And what Anton did to her! She definitely went through a lot. It was kinda hard to read.

I wish the book was a bit longer because when I finished I found myself craving more.

The revenge scenes were incredibly satisfying to read they totally deserved everything that came their way and even more.

Thanks to Candi kane, The author for the ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

Aghhh wtf Michelle Heard was that really necessary?

I can handle a lot but not this grape shit and the heroine being tortured this way.
This scene ruined the story for me so I DNF it .

I am so pissed right now and if this is the way of future books by MH her other books I loved btw I am not reading her books without spoilers before anymore.

Why why doing this and ruining a good book with this only to shock us or what ?

I trusted MH and got totally blind into it!
I can handle all that’s happened to the h off page but this scene was totally unnecessary and stupid!!!!! Sorry

Then there is this kid as a result of cruelty and grape by an awful rotting man and h loves and adores this kid so much ?

Why because it reminds her how beautiful she was conceived by the love of her life?! 🤬😡

I am really pissed right now

So maybe I’ll come back sometime when I cool off because I still paid for the book …uhhhhh

I remember starting this at 1:00 am, knowing it’s a very bad idea and loosing half night of sleep. I was hooked!

Fast paced and action packed, Georgi and Nina’s book consumed me. From the initial meeting to bonding over pain and then healing I enjoyed their journey.

I loved Simi. She was amazing.
The mafia fam is so awesome. I loved seeing so many of my beloved characters again. Curious about Raya and Atanas’ book. I also can’t Wait for Rosie’s story- she’s a badass.

This book is safe but hero is a former playboy.
Also TW!!!!

-Capo x single mom.
-Forced proximity.
-Hurt/Comfort.
-Enemies to lovers.
-He falls first and hard.
-Trauma bonding.
-KU, TW and recommended.

I received an advance review copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

➴ my thoughts.
the mafia atmosphere in this one absolutely delivered and i was eating it up from the start. that's genuinely my comfort zone and this book knew exactly how to feed it. my one real hangup is how quickly these two tumbled into love. it happened so fast that i barely had time to settle into their dynamic before they were already all in, and i think a slower burn would've elevated the whole thing for me. give me a little resistance, a little denial, some agonizing over feelings before the surrender. that's where the good stuff lives.

that said, simi had my whole heart. she was such a sweetheart and honestly carried a lot of my enjoyment here. and the mafia family? incredible as always. getting to spend time with so many characters i've already grown attached to felt like walking back into a room full of people i missed. there's something so satisfying about a series that keeps its world populated and lets old favorites drift back in. that sense of continuity is genuinely one of the best things about reading these in order.

so yes, still very much worth picking up. the rushed romance is my only real gripe, and it wasn't enough to sour the experience.

ᢉ𐭩 .ᐟ all in all, a fun, atmospheric read with a heroine i adored and a returning cast that made it feel like a reunion. the love story moving at warp speed is what held it back from a higher rating for me, but everything surrounding it worked. easy recommend if you're already invested in this world
