Welcome to Hell's Gate, where you're encouraged to carry holy water, a stake, a taser, and a UV flashlight at all times. Oh, and due to the Demon Clowns, make sure you adhere to the scheduled curfew every Tuesday.
Veronica is an investigative reporter who digs up the dirt on paranormal happenings in the city she grew up in, proving time and time again that the government doesn't always tell the full truth about the monsters believed to be only myth. A workaholic to the core, she can't shut her brain off and processes things differently. After years of digging up and writing the stories for the show, she's getting tired of her boss's egotistical shortcomings and empty promises. Then he's killed on set during an interview, and life begins to spiral for Veronica.
For the last three years, Veronica and Finn, the cameraman for the show, have been skating around each other. Rumors have been floating around the workplace, where coworkers pin them as the "Will They or Won't They" couple.
And now, in a twist, she has a stalker following her who doesn't make any sense. He's acting more like some kind of a 1940s noir film parody that's making her shake her head in bewilderment as much as scratching it in incredulity.
And, just when things couldn't seem to get more strange, Veronica is abducted on her first date with Finn ... by an alien?
** The story made me snort-laugh a couple of times. And I honestly think the title is perfect for the story.
Veronica's being unable to shut her brain off, constantly trying to figure out what's currently happening, and digging for the truth was somewhat relatable to me. I don't think the author meant to write her with neurodivergent tendencies, but she reminded me a lot of my son, who is on the autism spectrum with ADHD. The character exhibits characteristics of both, and whether that was intentional or not, it made her even more interesting to me.
I felt bad for Finn, who clearly has feelings for Veronica, but the uncomfortable length of time where they danced around each other may very well have wrecked what could have been.
Lydia, Veronica's best friend and roommate, is a very interesting character to me. A huge bookaholic like myself, she's a firm believer in telling it like it is, whether you want to hear it or not. I hope the author really does write a future book with Lydia as the FMC. We get a bit of her background, but not nearly enough to satisfy me.
And then there's Luke. Veronica's ... otherworldly stalker? I swear, when we first meet him, he's a character that could have been pulled right from a Mel Brooks movie. The snort-laughs are real enough when it comes to him. Seriously, how can an alien look so human? How can he not recognize the feeling of jealousy for what it is? And his "oopsie" with his modified ray gun? I still can't stop snickering!
If you loved Rob Reiner's "Princess Bride" and Mel Brooks's "Spaceballs," you will absolutely enjoy this story!
