Kat Hanneman and Lee Waters always dreamed of riding off into the stars together. With their final term approaching at the Raider Academy and the shadow of their last raid hanging over their hearts, that dream has never felt more vital.
But when secrets resurface, with the eyes of both their Commander and General, and the future of their Raider Placement on their backs, they begin to question everything they stand for. As their world crumbles around them, with only a promise whispered behind closed doors to guide them, Kat and Lee must decide what is worth fighting for, and what is better left as ash in the ruins of the galaxy, and how far one can possibly ride on a dream.
Gamma Raids II is a flirty space academia and space opera romance, the second installment in the Adventures of Kat and Lee.
For fans of Firefly and Star Trek, Gamma Raids is a new adult, slow burn flirty space academia and space fantasy series full of heart, with epic friendships, romantic tension, and fun banter that will leave you kicking your feet and ready to enroll with the Raider Academy.
R. Lynn Hanks is a sci-fi romance author based in a little farm town in the states. When not plotting high stakes space adventures or dabbling around with poetry, you can find me at a local coffee shop or at home teaching my two little gentlemen about the stars.
I loved the first book, but this one took everything I enjoyed and expanded on it.
The world feels so much bigger this time around. We get more of the politics, more mystery, higher stakes, and a deeper look at the relationships between the characters. It never felt overwhelming though. Every new piece of the story added something meaningful, and I found myself even more invested in what was happening.
Kat and Lee continue to be the heart of the series for me. Their chemistry, banter, and romance are just so enjoyable to read. They feel like real people facing impossible situations together, and I was rooting for them the entire time.
As a huge Star Trek fan, this series really scratches that itch. It has the sense of exploration, camaraderie, and adventure that I love, while still feeling like its own unique story. The mix of space opera, academy life, mystery, romance, and found family is exactly what I want from character-driven science fiction.
If you enjoy sci-fi that’s just as focused on its characters as it is on the adventure, I highly recommend this series. I enjoyed this one even more than the first.
The second installment in the Gamma Raids series by R. Lynn Hanks. And I really enjoyed it!
Kat and Lee's adventures continue as they navigate their feelings for each other and for the AMG. The system they're loyal to isn't what they thought it was, at least the people in charge aren't. And because of that, certain mysteries start to reveal themselves and unravel.
All while Lee and Kat enter a new phase of their relationship. No longer just best friends, the two cadets have midnight makeout sessions, go on vacation together, and explore what's really between them.
And there's a lot between them.
I loved Kat and Lee from the first book. And this second book continued their relationship/friendship perfectly. Their friendship is solid, steady, but now, it's so much more. I loved seeing Kat and Lee finally be together as a couple.
I also really enjoyed how the two had their own individual, emotional storylines. They both have a lot to figure out and to understand about what happened to them on their last mission and what they want for their futures.
They always had a plan for their future. And now, that plan isn't set in stone.
And this story wouldn't be complete without Kat and Lee's squadron. Their friends have their back for sure.
One of my favorite friendships was Lee and Zane. It was really fun to see their brooding bromance blossom. And of course, Whistler. I like Whistler.
I'm hoping in the next book, Kat and Whistler will become a little closer.
I also would've loved to see a scene with Kat and her girlfriends. The twins.
The twins, as well as a few other members of the squadron didn't get much time to shine, but I hope that changes as the series continues. Maybe one or two of them will get their own POV. Maybe Whistler will get his own short, side story. That'd be cool.
I also hope to find out more about Nolan. He wasn't exactly a friend to Kat and Lee but he wasn't a foe either. He's an interesting piece of the story.
Gamma Raids 2 is a fantastic continuation of a fun, fascinating sci-fi romance. It has great characters. And it's got an intriguing mystery threaded through the adventure.
I received an advanced reader copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
If I thought the first book pleasantly surprised me, this sequel completely won me over.
Picking up right where the previous story left off, Kat and Lee’s journey becomes more emotionally charged, more complex, and infinitely more compelling. The sense of adventure is still there, but this time it’s accompanied by heavier questions, difficult choices, and consequences that give the story a whole new depth.
One of my favorite aspects of this series continues to be its characters. Kat and Lee feel wonderfully real—their friendship, loyalty, fears, and hopes all evolve naturally as they’re forced to confront truths that challenge everything they thought they knew. Watching them grow, both individually and together, remains the heart of the story.
R. Lynn Hanks strikes a wonderful balance between character-driven moments and an engaging sci-fi plot. The mysteries deepen, the stakes feel much higher, and the emotional beats land beautifully without losing the warmth and humor that made me fall in love with these characters in the first place.
By the final chapters, I was once again completely invested, turning pages far too quickly while desperately hoping things would somehow work out. And just like its predecessor, this book leaves you eager to jump straight into the next installment.
This series keeps proving it’s far more than a fun YA space adventure. Beneath the stars, thrilling missions, and galaxy-spanning mysteries lies a story about friendship, courage, hope, and daring to hold onto your dreams even when everything around you seems determined to tear them away.
And that ending?! Come on now! R. Lynn, my dear, release book 3 like yesterday, pretty please?😬🥰❤️
The saga continues as R. Lynn Hanks reunites us with Kat Hanneman and Lee Waters in “Gamma Raids II”. Picking up right where we left off, we are back on the Raider Academy ship engaging in debriefs about the events in book 1 with AMG leadership, following along as Kat and Lee reconnect and process with their fellow squad leads and cadets, and somehow be convinced that maybe drinking green juice regularly isn’t that bad.
What I truly appreciate about this series is that the setup of the books feels like you’re working your way through consecutive seasons of an incredible show. The actual timeline across the first two books isn’t that long - both take place during the same academic year - but Hanks does such a great job at keeping us engaged with the characters, the unfolding of the plot, and the details of the story that it feels just about perfect.
And can we just talk for a minute about how the characters have given me a bit of nostalgia for that feeling you have in your late teens/early 20s (the MCs are 19) that you can just make the world yours? Kat, Lee, and the full cast of characters have such a drive for justice and compassion for their fellow galaxy inhabitants that it is a reminder to keep that want to do what’s right and serve the greater good - no matter what curveballs life throws at us.
And the ending - my goodness!!! What a setup for book 3! I can’t wait to see where the story will lead, what will be uncovered, and how Hanks will lead us towards a conclusion.
If you’re looking for a new series to follow along with, you like a good academia read, you like space sci-fi, and a 90s WB prime time drama feels like the best serotonin rush - dive into the “Gamma Raids” series.
I got this ebook copy of Gamma Raids II from R. Lynn Hanks, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Sometimes the most dangerous raid is not fought among the stars. It is the one that forces you to choose between the home you built and a truth powerful people want buried.
Gamma Raids II picks up after the disaster aboard Segura, with Kat and Lee returning to the Academy carrying secrets, unanswered questions, and the weight of what they survived. What begins as the fallout from one mission grows into a galactic conspiracy involving dark radiation, hidden experiments, destroyed evidence, and General Narron’s plans.
This character driven science fiction romance blends academy intrigue, mystery, danger, and found family. Kat and Lee remain the heart of the story as they face hard choices involving trust, loyalty, sacrifice, and the future they want together. Whistler, Zane, Jed, and the rest of the crew add humor, tension, and friendship when it matters most.
The middle moves slower with training, research, planning, and romantic moments, but the mystery keeps building. Once the hidden pieces begin connecting, the story takes off and ends with a cliffhanger that left me ready for Gamma Raids III.
Gamma Raids II delivers space adventure, academy politics, galactic secrets, romance, danger, found family, and a conspiracy ready to break wide open.
This was a great follow up to the first book. It picks up right at the end of the first one with the team in emotional distress after their last mission. No one knows what's going to happen and everyone is upset about it.
This book focused a lot on character development while going deeper into some lore explanations. Some answers to the why and the how they got to where they are, but mostly just presenting more questions.
The sweetest, most wholesome couple got to be an actual couple in this one. That was lovely and pleasant to read about. They, however, aren't the only ones that got to develop their relationship further. There's some side character romancing, but mainly there are friendships that get stronger throughout.
The entire book was leading up to one big decision and mission. I sat in anticipation with some burning questions until it actually happened. I love when books build that suspense. However, once the decision was made and the Big Mission underway, I felt that it went just a bit too fast. Where it went seems like the perfect setup for book 3 but I was just hoping for a little bit more before they got there.
Overall, I really enjoyed the second Gamma Raids book. The setting is fun, the characters are perfect babies with good intentions, and the plot is thickening with lore and tensions. If you're looking for a cozier space opera, I'd highly recommend these books.
I have to start off by saying one of my favorite things about Gamma Raids II was how much bigger the world felt. I got a much better sense of the people and events shaping everything behind the scenes, and it made the galaxy feel just that much more alive. The underlying mystery surrounding the Commander and the General's true motives kept me hooked throughout the book, and I loved getting those little clues that hinted at a much larger puzzle waiting to be solved. Even with all that, the story never loses sight of Kat and Lee, who are still very much its heart.
Their relationship continues to be one of my absolute favorite parts. It just feels real in all the little ways that relationships do. I found myself smiling through so many of their small interactions and just loved the banter! The supporting cast also gets more time to shine, making the Academy feel like a place full of friends rather than just being a backdrop for the two heroes.
This book spends a little more time building toward what's coming next than the first one, but it never feels out of place. Instead, it slowly expands the mystery while raising the stakes, and by the end I was completely invested in seeing where the story goes next.
Some books leave you wondering what happens next. This one left me wishing I could spend just a little more time with Kat, Lee, and the rest of their crew.
Gamma Raids 2 begins exactly where book one ended. We see the aftermath of Lee, Kat, and the gang’s mission and the higher-ups’ involvement. I feel like there was a lot about them developing friendships that they didn’t expect. I appreciate that the relationship between Lee and Kat didn’t take too long to grow.
This book did feel more about the daily routines of the characters. There was a bit of stakes with their curiosity about what the General and other higher-ups’ intentions. It was kind of slow throughout Lee and Kat coming to a decision on what their futures would look like and what they were going to do. The ending, however, threw me for a loop. Now, I have questions and I’m the curious one trying to figure out everyone’s intentions and involvement. It is a cute sci-fi story and I’m curious where the story will end up going.
I did receive an ARC of this book. My opinions and thoughts are all my own.
I received this as an ARC, and I’m so thankful BECAUSE
You know how most series’s book 2 is usually a bit of a slog? Book 1 is action and the hook to the universe, 2 is usually just SO MUCH (necessary) exposition to set up the rest of the series and Books 3+ are either the setup or culmination of the Book Series Arc?
This Book 2 was anything but a slog. You jump right back into the story, in the events immediately following the conclusion of book 1. There’s deeper character development sure (especially with some of the supporting cast), but MAN the stakes got raised and the plot continued propelling at a steady clip. I loved this, possibly more than book 1 (though the wholesome yearning in GR1 is hard to beat). I am beside myself that I have to wait for the next installment because THAT ENDING!!!!
This one picks off right where gamma raids 1 leaves us. It was fun to see how things play out for our band of raiders after that last mission. I loved watching the team continue to get closer and their friendships solidify into a strong, unbreakable bond.
I also really enjoyed that the “will they, won’t they” that was Kat and Lee’s situation ship was settled and that they finally were able to figure out what they meant to one another.
I felt like the middle of this one was a little slow, it focuses mostly on the day to day of being on the ship and Lee and Kat trying to figure out nexts steps. But it picked up as the conspiracy starts to unfold more.
The continued mystery was interesting to watch play out, and I absolutely loved the ending and am excited to see what happens next.
All I can say is WOW!!! I loved book 2 even more than I loved book 1! The events in this story pick up right after the conclusion of the first book.
We get even more of Kat and Lee my favorite couple ever! They are just so cute together and their banter is definitely on point! I loved how this book delved more into Kat and Lee's everyday lives at the academy. Those were some of my most favorite scenes and I enjoyed reading them. This story is also very action packed at the same time!
And of course, that ending!!
As always, the Star Trek Romantasy vibes are high and on a side note, I think I've finally been convinced to try green juice for the first time lol
I'm super looking forward to the third installment of the series!
The premise of Gamma Raids II immediately caught my attention. A combination of space opera, academy life, slow-burn romance, and high-stakes adventure is exactly the kind of story I enjoy. Kat and Lee's journey sounds like it's going to deliver plenty of emotional tension, character growth, and exciting twists.
I'm especially looking forward to seeing how the secrets surrounding their future at the Raider Academy unfold, and the Firefly and Star Trek comparisons definitely have me intrigued. The blend of friendship, romance, and space adventure sounds like a fantastic combination.
Looking forward to diving into this one when it's released!
A stellar sequel! Kat and Lee are still the best, loved their tension, banter, and conflict in the aftermath of book 1.
Book 2 picks up after the mystery uncovered in book 1 and continues through the aftermath and repercussions. Kat and Lee get back into some Laser Rounds and wind surfing with their fellow Gammas/cadets as they make plans for their future as their final term is coming to an end.
Highly recommend, go pick up book 1 and get ready to blast off with Gamma Raids II on 7.30
The second installment of the series & we jump right back into the story from where we left off.
This second book was not as full of action, but the intrigue was definitely there as Kat and Lee try to figure out what happened and why. Both Kat and Lee go on their own emotional journeys during this book which adds a lot.
I enjoyed Zane & Lee getting to know one another. Hoping that Kat & Whistler's friendship gets explored a little more. Hoping that all the squad features in the next book.
This was a solid follow up to the first book and definitely sets up the next. I'm looking forward to it!
Received from Author. I was hooked right from the start of this book and was so glad to be back in this world. This book picks up right where Gamma Raids I left off. I loved seeing the turmoil that Lee and Kat go through after they are back at the academy after the ending of Raids I. The middle was a little slower paced but that sets up the ending of the book wonderfully. The twists at the end were so wonderfully written. I loved the first twist and was hoping for it but the last one was very unexpected and I cannot wait for Gamma Raids III!
R. Lynn Hanks outdid herself with this sequel! The lingering mystery threads through Gamma Raids II nicely, and it kept me hooked amid the sweet moments of Kat and Lee exploring their newfound relationship. The whole crew from Gamma I comes in at one point or another, which I loved, and Hanks didn't shy away from having her characters ask big questions and face the dramatic consequences of their discoveries. Without spoiling anything, I LOVED this ending (and please, please read the epilogue!). Overall I can't wait to see how Hanks continues this saga!
Kat and Lee are back, picking up right where they left off. Everything about them makes you fall in love with them even more their dynamic is everything. The stakes are so much higher this time around; so much is uncovered. Mystery, secrets, and humor, and the story balances all of that out perfectly. I can't get over the found family in this book; they are all so special. What truly sets this book apart, though, is its heart, and you can see it through the pages. What an adventure! I was so invested. I can't wait to see what happens next.
I loved returning to this world. There's a bit of a damper on things at the academy this book after the end of book 1, and the action is more internal than external (but we still get some fun raids and laser rounds and break-ins).
I really liked some of the prose and how great Kat and Lee are together. I also loved Zane this book. I warmed up to him by the end of the first, but I found myself enjoying Zane and Lee's interactions in this book.
I received an ARC and am leaving this review of my own volition.
What an exceptional sequel! Everything R Lynn says she wants her books to be and puts into her books and says inspires her books is exactly what she delivers plus a little more of her own special magic! Kat & Lee are the cutest and swooniest! The found family had me teary eyed! Tonya Waters was just an amazing side character that I just love so much! The last sentence in the epilogue blew my mind! I am so excited for more of Kat & Lee's adventures! Truly amazing sequel!
An amazing sequel! It picks up right where we left off in Gamma Raids I. Its time time to find out how Kat and Lee are doing, after everything they have discovered. The stakes are high and their futures are in the balance. While trying to find answers, we also see Kat and Lee finally accept their true feelings. Its so sweet.
In Gamma Raids 2 we continue to follow Kat and Lee as they find themselves in the middle of a life they never anticipated, having to make impossible decisions that will impact the course of their futures forever. Luckily for them, they aren’t alone. If you love intergalactic adventures with high stakes, friends turned found family, and romance level yearning, this is the book for you!
4.5⭐️ book 2 picks up exactly where book 1 ends which is one of my favorite things! I love the character development in this book between Kat and Lee! I absolutely just love them! This was definitely an emotional roller coaster for them! I absolutely loved all the banter! Banter always makes a book an engulfing easy read! I can’t wait to see where book 3 goes!
This one picks up right where book 1 leaves off. The story begins with some of the fallout from the events in book 1, and then they have to navigate the new changes. I loved watching Kat and Lee try to figure out what they are to each other now too. It was sweet and adventurous! This is great second part of Kat and Lee's
It's not often that a sequel is better than the first book!
What a fun ride and space adventure! Love the found family aspect, the growth of all the main characters, and the overall mission of improving the universe
It was so much fun to see Kat, Lee, and crew again in this sequel! New stakes, fresh connections, and even more flirting! I loved this one for the cozy complexities between the characters and the romance sparking between them!
I think I liked this one better than the first. Not that the first was any less fun of a read, but dealing with the aftermath of book 1 and having their faith in the Academy shaken, plus Kat and Lee resolving the situation around how they feel about each other, this was a great read. Most of this book is spent at the Academy and getting to see some of Kat and Lee’s day to day lives helped ground them better as MCs of this space saga. Plus I loved getting to see how things worked out post-mission with their teammates! I can’t wait for the next one to see where their adventures take them next!
I had the best time reading this ARC! The stakes and adventures are so much more intense this time around. The banter between Kat and Lee is the best. And can we talk about the sloooow burn??? I can't get enough. Who doesn't love a good slow burn that hurts in the best way? I'm ready for more.
