She was his sister’s dearest friend and his greatest regret.
For years, Julien Harcourt did what honor required. Certain there would be time, he stepped aside and allowed Caroline Ashworth the freedom of her Season—never imagining another man would seize the place he meant to claim.
He was wrong.
Six years of promises have ended in quiet humiliation. Cast aside for another woman—one who has long traded in whispers and carefully placed gossip—Caroline has become the subject of society’s amusement rather than its admiration. The future she once believed secure is now a cautionary tale told behind fans and over teacups.
Julien will not make the same mistake twice.
What begins as protection quickly becomes something far more dangerous—long-buried desire sharpened by regret, and a connection neither of them can deny. This time, he will not stand aside while others dictate her fate.
But the past does not release its hold so easily. Secrets, ambition, and the ruthless pursuit of advantage have set events in motion that cannot easily be undone, and the very scandal that destroyed one future may yet threaten another.
His honor and restraint once cost him everything. Now another man’s dishonor has given him a second chance— a chance at the happiness they both deserve.
USA Today Best Selling author and Winner of the 2019 Romance Through the Ages Award for Georgian/Regency Romance, Chasity Bowlin is the author multiple bestselling historical romance novels, both independently and with Dragonblade Publishing. She lives in central Kentucky with her husband and their menagerie of animals. She loves writing, loves traveling and enjoys incorporating tidbits of her actual vacations into her books. She is an avid Anglophile, loving all things British, but specifically all things Regency.
Growing up in Tennessee, spending as much time as possible with her doting grandparents, soap operas were a part of her daily existence, followed by back to back episodes of Scooby Doo. Her path to becoming a romance novelist was set when, rather than simply have her Barbie dolls cruise around in a pink convertible, they time traveled, hosted lavish dinner parties and one even had an evil twin locked in the attic.
This is my 56th book by Chasity. I have been reading her books since mid-2017. I know she isn't normally super steamy but I've been reading her for so long and she is such a good writer, I don’t care and she gives just enough. I know I'll get a good read from her either way. She is on my list of favorite authors. I'm happy to see she has a new series out and I really liked Book 1.
I liked this story and this couple, Caroline and Julian. A strange thing to me was there was a couple of places at the beginning writings and I don't know if this will make sense but there were two instances between characters when together in a room having a conversation, but they weren't actually written out like a back and forth conversation. It was just a few paragraphs of what they talked about although they were in the room together. It was a bit strange because it read like a conversation in a characters own head. It happened twice and I thought it was odd. Almost like they didn't want to be bothered with writing out their whole conversation. Just paraphrased it. Other than that, it was a good read and a good story.
I enjoyed this second book in the series as I was invested in the characters from the first book. However, it was a short novella so some things were repetitive from the epilogue of the previous book. The evolution of the relationship between Caroline and Julien was enjoyable and endearing. I appreciated that after having to wait so long for them to even have the chance to be together that they didn’t beat around the bush about sharing their feelings. The story did contain mean spirited people from their past that meant them harm, but they got their own comeuppance through a comical turn of events. This story was a second chance, friends to lovers, slow burn story with a tender seduction. There was family found, acceptance through love, romance, and a HEA. The story did have a lot of typos even a section that seemed to be repeated. I would have expected better proofreading after the issues in the first book in the series so I could only give 3 stars.
Though a bit of a different style for this author I really enjoyed getting to know the characters we were introduced to in the first book and was happy to see that Julian and Caroline realized what each other had. There were some villains in the story and was happy they got their comeuppance, though not as I expected. Even though much time had passed it was wonderful to see that Julian knew his heart and waited for Caro!INE to find hers. There were a few typos that could have been avoided but the story was a slow moving romance worth reading. This author is one of my favorites. Enjoy!
It did not feel like her writing. The sentences were somewhat unwieldy - very wordy with way too much introspection by the main characters. Not what I expected of a Chasity Bowlin book. Could it have been written by AI?
