I remember when the Rex Havoc and the Asskickers of the Fantastic stories ran in Warren Comics. I think this means I was alive during pre-human days.
Either that or the cold has me thinking I'm being frozen to be preserved for some unknown reason.
However, there is a good reason for Stenstrum to bring his creation back in novel form. Whether you consider this a satire or a pastiche, for the most part it works. I say for the most part. because for me the humor began to run a little thin after awhile. So, as in most case IMO, your humor mileage will likely vary.
The basic concept is a mashup of pulp conventions such as Doc Savage with old time monster movies. The update here, for anyone who has read the comics, is that Rex's team is dead, and yes you do find out what happened to them in this book.
The world is different as monsters of all types have come out of the closet. Rex, once formerly brilliant, is for unknown reasons a bit of a dunce now (same as in the comics). He has an irrational hatred of all types of monsters, with an update provided for slasher type of monsters.
Circumstances draw Rex, and others, into the circle of two aliens who have left their Earth colony to cause, well, havoc.
I wanted to read this book because the title pulled me in. Once I started reading it, I discovered that it had a 1950's pulp magazine feel to it. This wasn't a bad thing because the book was actually well written with clearly defined characters. The plot tended to flow exceptionally well, the action consistent with the pulp magazines, and the jokes were good. Overall it was such an interesting read that I had to purchased his second book with this character.
