This has been the only book I have read this year. I read it on a bus during an eighth grade field trip with my daughter's class. To say I was engrossed was an understatement; I was able to tune out a bus full of kids. :)
The book itself:
It's crucial to note: Alicia takes full responsibility for her part in the story she tells. I think that is super important for anyone going into this to know, especially if you're going into it from a perspective that isn't the "other woman". She doesn't make excuses for herself, or for him. It is simply the story and the aftermath.
The story is well-written for a first time author. There were a few spots where I had to re-read, think about the timeline, or had a question pop into my head about it. But overall, she and her editor(s) did a good job with this book, doing the story justice and giving it life. The subject matter is a tricky one and isn't something to be dealt with lightly, but there are moments where I laughed, which I think is a good thing with a book like this. It reflects the reality of it being life. I could feel a lot of the emotions coming through the pages and there were times I wanted to reach in and just hug her, or throttle her, depending on the situation. Which is a great thing, when reading a book, let's be honest.
The poems at the end were a wonderful addition and a great way to cap off the book.
On a personal note:
I only met Alicia a year or so ago, in passing. Then I've had the pleasure of talking to her more and seeing what an amazing person she is at present. To read her story, to see her exposing her vulnerabilities and raw wounds, knowing she is opening herself up to judgement along with the compassion she will receive, was beautiful.
I grew up in the same area as she did, in the same time she did. I understand completely the small town life and ideals of which she wrote. I also could viscerally relate to a church, as a whole, reacting to something with which they did not agree and therefore no longing feeling welcome, or as if you belong in church.
I opened the cover with trepidation, however. As I said, I had met Alicia fairly recently in life. I didn't know the Alicia in the book. I know present-day Alicia. Not on a deep level, of course, but as she presents herself to the world at large. I see her as a self-assured, confident, and strong individual. Someone who knows what she wants and knows what is right, and will do what needs to be done to make one or both of those things happen. I was half afraid to meet the Alicia in the book; would the story of the woman she once was change my perception of who she is now?
That answer is a resounding and emphatic no. It only reinforced my belief that she is stronger than she probably gives herself credit for. This could not have been an easy story to share with those closest to her, let alone the world. She never pretends to be innocent, never pretends that she isn't responsible for her own actions. Her goal seems to be helping others break free of their demons and return to a life that isn't bound by secrets and chains.

Unhealthy secrets are often kept in an attempt to save oneself from public shame. The truth is, the longer something is hidden, the more complicated the problem becomes, and the longer the healing journey that lies ahead. How I wish this book existed in 2011 when I too engaged in an extramarital affair. The transparency Alicia maintains in More Than A Secret exemplifies the emotional highs and lows, the complexity of both facing and healing from the mess, but most importantly provides hope, grace and the grit to scream NO MORE to the weight of the secret. If you are holding onto a secret and feeling drained by the damage it is causing, but ready for guidance to move forward, choose to invest in yourself—pick up a copy and begin the work of healing for your future self.

"More Than A Secret" held my attention from the first page. Alicia Barr shares her story with transparency. She doesn't shy away from the raw emotions and struggle, neither does she excuse her story. This is a powerful book that looks at restoration after an affair. No one ever said it would be easy, and Alecia Barr lays it on the line! The reader goes through every emotion with the writer, and in the end, you feel how close Jesus is to the brokenhearted, even if you haven't been there yourself. This book should be made available to every Christian counselor and every woman who has felt betrayed by broken promises from a man who is living the best of both worlds, in a manner of speaking. Must read!
